Anyone who has seen Petra in photographs remembers the Treasury. But emerging from the narrow Siq and arriving in front of that rose red façade does not mean you have seen Petra. It is only the gateway to an entire city, where more than 2,000 years of history were written into stone. Petra lies near Wadi Musa in southern Jordan. More than two millennia ago, it became the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and an important stop along trade routes linking Arabia, Egypt and the Mediterranean. The rock carvings are impressive, but Petra’s story goes much deeper. The Nabataeans managed to build a thriving city in a dry landscape by creating channels, dams and reservoirs to collect and control water. Look closely inside the Siq and you can still see parts of that ancient system. Petra is called the Rose City for good reason. Its sandstone changes throughout the day, moving between shades of pink, red, orange and even soft purple. The colours seen through a phone camera may not look quite the same as they do to the eye. It is also often called the Lost City, although Petra was never truly forgotten by the local Bedouin community. The archaeological site may belong to ancient history, but the people living around it are still part of Petra’s story today. Entering Petra through the Siq 🏜️ The journey begins at Petra Visitor Center. From there, the path passes through Bab Al Siq before entering the Siq, a natural gorge stretching for more than a kilometre. In some places, the passage becomes so narrow that the sandstone walls seem to close in from both sides. The light keeps changing as you walk, revealing different colours, textures and small details in the rock. The Siq is not simply a road leading to Petra’s main attraction. It is part of the experience. Ancient water channels run along its walls, quietly showing how the Nabataeans carried water into their city. Near the end, a thin opening between the rocks begins to reveal part of the Treasury. A few more steps and the full façade appears. This is Al Khazneh, better known as the Treasury. Despite its name, it was probably not used to store treasure. Its exact purpose remains uncertain, but many researchers believe it may have been a royal tomb or ceremonial monument. Take your photo, enjoy the moment, and then keep walking. Petra has only just started. Don’t stop at the Treasury Beyond the Treasury, the route continues towards the Street of Facades, where rows of tombs were carved directly into the cliffs. Not far away is Petra’s large theatre. It is often called the Roman Theatre, but the original structure was carved by the Nabataeans before being expanded during Roman rule. Thousands of people could once gather here, which gives a better sense of how active and populated Petra must have been. The Royal Tombs deserve time too. The Urn Tomb, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb and Palace Tomb each have their own shape, details and layers of colour. Walking up towards them also opens wider views across the ancient city. Continue along the main trail and you will reach the Colonnaded Street, the Great Temple and Qasr Al Bint, one of Petra’s most important temples. By this point, Petra no longer feels like a single monument. It begins to look like what it once was: a living city with streets, temples, markets and public spaces. Then comes the Monastery, known locally as Ad Deir. Reaching it requires climbing around 800 stone steps. The path can be steep, exposed and tiring, so this is not the place to use all your energy too quickly. Rest when you need to and keep some water with you. At the top, the Monastery appears across a wide open space. Its façade is even larger than the Treasury, and the surrounding viewpoints look out over Petra’s rugged mountains. By the time you reach it, your shoes may be dusty and your legs may have had enough. The view tends to make the effort feel worthwhile. One day or two? Petra can be explored in one full day, but it needs to be a genuinely full day. Arrive early and be prepared to walk. The main trail from the Visitor Center is approximately 3.9 kilometres in one direction. Once the Monastery, Royal Tombs and additional viewpoints are added, the total walking distance can easily pass 10 kilometres. With one day, focus on the Siq, Treasury, Street of Facades, Royal Tombs, Colonnaded Street and the Monastery. With two days, you can slow down, stop for photographs and explore some of the longer trails without constantly checking the time. Two day and three day tickets must be used on consecutive days. Petra normally opens early, around 6:00 or 6:30 AM depending on the season. Those first hours offer cooler air, softer light and fewer people around the Treasury. Opening and closing times can change, so check the official schedule before visiting. Getting to Petra from Amman 🚍 Petra is about 235 kilometres from Amman. Travelling by private car or transfer along the Desert Highway usually takes around three hours. JETT buses also operate between Amman and Petra. They generally leave early in the morning, but departure times can change during weekends, public holidays and Ramadan. Check the latest timetable and reserve ahead if travelling during a busy period. A day trip from Amman is possible, but it can turn Petra into a race against the return bus. Staying at least one night around Petra gives you a much easier start and enough time to enjoy the site without watching the clock all day. Petra tickets and the Jordan Pass 🎟️ For international visitors spending at least one night in Jordan, the current daytime entrance fees are: · One day: 50 JOD, approximately US$70.50 · Two consecutive days: 55 JOD, approximately US$77.55 · Three consecutive days: 60 JOD, approximately US$84.60 The USD estimates in this post use an exchange rate of 1 JOD to US$1.41. If Petra is part of a longer Jordan trip, the Jordan Pass may offer better value. It includes entry to more than 40 attractions around the country, including Petra, Wadi Rum, Jerash and several museums and archaeological sites. · Jordan Wanderer with one day at Petra: 70 JOD, approximately US$98.70 · Jordan Explorer with two days at Petra: 75 JOD, approximately US$105.75 · Jordan Expert with three days at Petra: 80 JOD, approximately US$112.80 Eligible travellers who purchase the Jordan Pass before arrival and remain in Jordan for at least two nights, or three days, may also have the tourist visa fee waived. Confirm the latest information on the official Visit Petra and Jordan Pass websites before travelling. Is Petra by Night worth it? 🕯️ Petra by Night offers a very different view of the site. Visitors walk through the Siq under candlelight before gathering in front of the illuminated Treasury. At the time of writing, the experience runs from Sunday to Thursday, starting at 8:30 PM and finishing at around 10:30 PM. A ticket costs 30 JOD, approximately US$42.30. Petra by Night is not included with the daytime ticket or Jordan Pass, so it must be purchased separately. If seeing the Treasury under candlelight is high on your list, it can add a special evening to the trip. If your budget is tight, it is not essential. Daytime Petra already offers the fuller experience, while the night programme follows only part of the site. Schedules and prices may change, so check again before choosing your date. Where to stay near Petra 🛏️ After spending the day walking through Petra, a quiet night among the surrounding rock formations sounds like a good way to rest. The Rock Camp Petra is worth considering for a one night stay. It is located in Al Baydha near Little Petra, around 14 kilometres from Petra Visitor Center. The drive usually takes 15 to 20 minutes. This is important to know before booking. The camp is not within walking distance of Petra’s main entrance, so arrange a taxi or hotel transfer in advance. When I checked Trip.com, rooms at The Rock Camp Petra started from US$63 per night. An optional buffet breakfast was available for US$11.31. It suits travellers who want more than a convenient bed in town and would rather spend the night in a quieter setting surrounded by Jordan’s rocky landscape. Room rates, breakfast prices and availability depend on the travel dates, so check the latest price on Trip.com before booking. A few things to know before you go · Wear comfortable shoes with good grip. Petra has sand, uneven stone paths and some steep climbs. Soft shoes without enough traction may feel fine at first but become difficult on the higher trails. · Carry water, sunscreen, a hat and a light extra layer. It can feel warm under direct sunlight and surprisingly cool inside the Siq or shaded areas. · Start early. It is better to enjoy the Treasury before the largest crowds arrive and cover the exposed sections before the afternoon heat. · Bedouin stalls along the route sell water, tea, snacks and souvenirs. Carrying some Jordanian dinars in cash can be useful. · Agree on the full price before accepting horse, donkey, camel, photography or guiding services. Consider your own safety and the condition of the animal before choosing to ride. · Ask permission before photographing local people. Petra is a historical site, but it is also connected to a living community. · Do not climb restricted structures or leave marked routes simply for a photograph. · Check the weather, especially during winter or after heavy rain. The narrow Siq can be temporarily closed when there is a risk of flash flooding. · Take breaks and drink regularly. Petra is not a place where you need to rush through every stop. Saving some energy for the Monastery will make the final climb much easier. You can travel to Petra for one photograph in front of the Treasury. But if you keep walking, the city gives you something larger. There are tombs, temples, streets, water channels and a long climb leading deeper into the mountains. Together, they tell the story of people who learned how to build and live in a place that does not make survival easy. When the time comes to walk back through the Siq, it probably will not be the Treasury alone that stays in your memory. #epictravelmoments Most people come to Petra for the famous Treasury, take the photo and think they’ve seen the highlight. But Petra is HUGE, and some of my favourite views were much deeper inside. The walk through the red-rock canyons, the quiet paths, the viewpoints and finally reaching the Monastery made the whole experience feel like an actual adventure rather than just sightseeing. A few tips if you’re planning Petra: wear proper walking shoes because you’ll easily spend hours on your feet, bring plenty of water and sun protection, and don’t rush your visit. If you want to reach the Monastery with less uphill climbing, you can also consider the backdoor route — there’s a shuttle connection followed by a local jeep ride, then you approach Petra from the Monastery side and walk mostly downhill through the site. The back route was also noticeably quieter when I went, which made the journey feel even more special. And most importantly — don’t plan Petra only around the Treasury. Keep walking. But Petra doesn’t end there. Keep walking and the city just keeps unfolding — paths carved between rose-coloured cliffs, ancient stairways disappearing into the mountains, little caves, viewpoints above the Treasury, and eventually the Monastery hidden much deeper inside. That was probably my favourite part about Petra. You think you’ve already seen the highlight… then you turn another corner and Petra gives you something else. #overratedspots Madaba is known as the “City of Mosaics,” so naturally I expected to be completely blown away. And yes — the mosaics are incredibly detailed. Some of them have survived for centuries, with tiny pieces forming animals, people, patterns and stories beneath your feet. Walking through the Burnt Palace and Martyrs Church area almost feels like discovering pieces of a giant ancient puzzle. But… would I say Madaba was one of the highlights of Jordan? Probably not. 😅 After Petra, Wadi Rum and the dramatic landscapes elsewhere in Jordan, Madaba felt much quieter and less memorable for me. Interesting? Definitely. Beautiful craftsmanship? Absolutely. But I probably wouldn’t travel here just for Madaba. If it’s already on your route between Amman, Mount Nebo or the Dead Sea, then it’s a lovely stop for a couple of hours. But as a destination on its own? A little overrated for me. 👀🇯🇴 Sometimes a place can be historically fascinating without becoming your favourite — and that’s exactly how Madaba felt to me.

#epictravelmoments If you’re visiting Petra, here’s one route I absolutely loved and would personally choose again: start from the back entrance. Instead of beginning from the usual main entrance, I took the free shuttle towards Little Petra, then transferred to a jeep. I paid 20 JOD for the jeep when I visited, and from there we continued towards the starting point of Petra’s back route. And honestly… I LOVED doing Petra this way. The biggest difference for me was the crowd. Starting from the back felt so much quieter and more peaceful. I didn’t feel like I had to rush anywhere, so I could actually stop, enjoy the landscape, take photos and appreciate how EPIC Petra really is. And then comes my favourite part… Instead of approaching The Monastery from inside Petra and climbing all those steps UP, I came in from the other direction. Which meant afterwards… I was going DOWN the long staircase instead. 😂 That made the journey so much more enjoyable for me! You slowly make your way through the mountains, arrive at the incredible Monastery, then continue downhill through Petra towards the rest of the ancient city. No rushing. Much fewer people at the beginning. Beautiful mountain scenery. And less of that “WHY AM I STILL CLIMBING?!” feeling. 😂 For me, seeing Petra this way made the whole experience feel like an actual journey rather than just visiting one famous landmark.
