2026 Phrao Travel Guide: must-see attractions, popular food, hotels, transport & travel experiences (updated in September)

We kicked off this trip from downtown Chiang Mai in the morning, heading toward Mae Taeng. We made a quick pit stop at Mae Taeng Market at 9:00 AM to grab some fried pork before riding on to enjoy our meal in the shady, relaxing vibes of the Bo Kaeo Pine Tree Garden. From there, we crossed into Chiang Dao District, stopping for a coffee break with stunning mountain views at Ma Doo Doi Coffee, and then fueled up with a delicious lunch at Sompor, a local fish restaurant in the Mueang Ngai area. In the afternoon, we hit the road to Wat Doi Mae Pang to pay our respects and soak in the serene atmosphere of this temple, famously associated with the revered monk Luang Pu Waen Sucinno. Next, we rode on to Phrao District to check out the Giant Rain Tree in the middle of the water. It’s a gorgeous natural rest stop featuring a scenic reservoir, mountain backdrops, traditional local boats, and plenty of picture-perfect spots to unwind before heading back. At 4:00 PM, we started our ride back to Chiang Mai via Route 1001. This stretch of the journey was absolutely breathtaking, with both sides of the road lined with lush rice paddies, majestic mountains, and shaded tree canopies. The ride took about an hour and a half, and we safely arrived back in downtown Chiang Mai at 5:30 PM. The atmosphere is amazing! I highly recommend going between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM when the lighting is perfect and the sun is just rising. We visited in early January, and the rain tree standing in the water looked absolutely stunning. The photos came out with such a great natural vibe. There was a cool breeze and the surroundings were blanketed in the morning mist. 💚🌿 After the boat ride, we stopped by to taste some tea. The tea was incredibly fragrant and delicious, with so many blends to choose from. Don't forget to shop for some local OTOP products at the pier before heading back!

Phrao is a small, remote town. Even now, travel is much easier; it takes no more than two hours by car from Chiang Mai city. Yet, many people in this town still feel that it is a small, remote town. But every town breathes at its own pace. Change is normal. Not long ago, another new entrepreneur opened in San Sai subdistrict. On the way to Huai Pa Plu Waterfall (known as Huai Pa Pu Waterfall in the local dialect), this old farmland at the foot of the mountains has changed hands to a new owner, who traveled all the way from Chonburi. They brought their whole family to start a business here, because they were "enchanted by Phrao." They named this place "#Aun Ai Phrao Homestay, Cafe & Camping." The name is incredibly cute and meaningful. Those who love Phrao will understand the meaning of "Aun Ai Phrao." Aun Ai Phrao is only a few kilometers from Siri Muang Phrao, a short 15-minute drive away. From Siri Muang Phrao, head north towards Huai Pa Plu Waterfall. The place will be on your left, with mountains surrounding you in the distance. From the cafe area, you can see the cool, clear Mae Ngat River flowing by like a private stream. Therefore, it offers a high degree of privacy for relaxing and unwinding. The shop is very charming, decorated with *handicrafts* made by the owner. Every little detail contributes to the charm. It's clear that it comes from skill, passion, and unique artistry. On the day we visited, the coffee was served in beautiful cups, the customer service was attentive, the staff were enthusiastic, and there was a touch of dreamy design throughout. This place offers affordable accommodation, a variety of drinks and snacks, and I understand it transforms into a bar in the evenings. If you're visiting Phrao and want to experience another natural wonder, with views of vast rice fields, the opportunity to swim in a stream, and a comfortable cafe with beautiful, thoughtfully designed furniture, then come visit! It's an open-air cafe with a charming atmosphere. We sat watching the community go by while enjoying delicious drinks and cakes. It was an incredibly relaxing feeling. The drinks here are delicious, strong, and aromatic – just the way we like them. The cakes are homemade; we even saw them being prepared in the kitchen, and we saw customers asking for different flavors (they must be quite popular in the community). After trying them, we're not surprised – the cakes are delicious and reasonably priced. I want to immerse myself more in the natural charm of Phrao community.
