#underratedspots 💦 Is Shifen Waterfall worth visiting? Before our Taiwan trip, we kept seeing people recommend Shifen Waterfall together with Shifen Old Street. Naturally, we wondered if it was actually worth the extra walk or if it was just another stop people added because it was nearby. After visiting, we'd say yes, it's worth it. What surprised us most was the size of the waterfall. Photos really don't do it justice. Often nicknamed Taiwan's "Little Niagara", it's much wider and more powerful in person than we expected. Getting there is part of the experience too. From Shifen Old Street, it took us around 20 to 30 minutes on foot each way, depending on your pace and photo stops. When we visited, it was drizzling for most of the walk, but we decided to brave the rain anyway and we're glad we did. By the time we reached the viewing platforms, the waterfall was roaring from the recent rain and looked even more impressive against the misty surroundings. The walk itself is easy and well-maintained, with several viewing areas along the way. We spent quite a while taking photos and enjoying the different angles before heading back. That said, we probably wouldn't travel all the way from Taipei just for the waterfall alone. For us, the best way is to combine it with Shifen Old Street, Jiufen or other northeast coast attractions as part of a day trip. Personally, I think Jingtong Old Street is the most beautiful spot along the line, even though it's quite short and tends to be the quietest. The Pingxi Branch Line spans 12.9 kilometers and was originally built as a transport railway for coal. Right next to Jingtong Station, you'll find the Jingtong Mining Industry Museum, which highlights the area's history—from its mining boom to its decline. This is such a great event to experience during Lunar New year in Taiwan. In the town of Pingxi or Shifen (the first weekend it is in Pingxi and the second time in Shifen) about ninety minutes from Taipei. This is a free event that the tourist board organizes and they do a fantastic job. I went to both but the Pingxi Lantern launch was less busy. I am not so sure if that is always the case. To participate you must get a ticket on the day of the festival, I recommend going early in the morning on the day of the event to get a time spot to release a lantern. Afterwards it is possible to visit Shifen Waterfall, a beautiful and magical place to spend before lunch. 🍚🥢Lunch spot - I recommend trying Stinky Tofu. This is the place! 226, Taiwan, New Taipei City, Pingxi District, 分 For the afternoon I would suggest hopping on the train and going to Pingxi Old Street or Houtong (cat village). In the late afternoon Shifen starts to get full with people so I would suggest coming back to wander the food stalls and get ready for the incredible evening. If you just want to watch the lanterns being released you do not need a ticket. It is important you get a good spot early because it is difficult to move through the crowds. There were ten different lantern launches. One every half an hour from about 6 pm till 10 pm. There are lots of people to help with the lanterns, many firemen around, lots of security, and of course Lanterns. Participating in the lantern release is really calm, there are lots of volunteers helping and explaining in both English and Mandarin. There is a lot of space between the lanterns and people in the launch area but when the lanterns are all released at the same time it is 'WOW'. It is said to have the oldest postbox in Taiwan, but in fact it is not very old (the British postboxes in Hong Kong should be older). Youkeng Historic Trail is located between Sandiaoling Station and Dahua Station on the Pingxi Line. It is a sparsely populated hiking trail with green paths, small bridges and flowing water. It has been the connecting road between Yuliaozai and Youkeng since the Qing Dynasty. After getting off at Sandiaoling Station, walk along the stream to the trailhead. The trail is a muddy path with unclear signs along the way. You will pass through tunnels along the way. You can choose to walk through one tunnel after another in the dark, or continue along the ancient trail. The tunnel is a faster way to reach Youkeng Waterfall. You need to go through at least 5 to 6 tunnels. The train passes through every 20 to 30 minutes. You often see sky lanterns in guidebooks. I tried it and it was more fun than I expected. When I arrived at Shifen Station, there were many shops selling sky lanterns around, so I bought one in my favorite color. Write your wish on a small balloon-like sky lantern, light a fire under the lantern, and just like a balloon, you send it up into the sky with the updrafts generated by the heat! The shop staff took lots of photos with their smartphones right before the lantern was launched, which was also fun. They spoke many languages, so they even gave me instructions on how to pose in simple Japanese. In addition to spectacular views, you can also enjoy a leisurely stroll around the city, lantern displays, and the cat village. ⸻ 🐾 Houtong Cat Village: A mountain village where cats play a central role First, get off at Houtong Station and you'll find a town filled with cats nestled between the mountains and the station. This mining village once thrived due to its coal mining industry. Since 2008, it has been reborn as a place of cat lovers, earning it international fame as "Cat Village." Cat-themed footbridges, cafes, and souvenir shops are scattered throughout the area. It's a particularly recommended spot for cat lovers to relax. Local volunteers provide cat litter boxes and rescue and neuter cats. The recommended stay is 2-3 hours. Go early in the morning to experience the most active cats. ⸻ 🏮 Shifen Old Street: The Town of Train Track Cafes and Lantern Experiences Next, we head to the shopping street directly connected to Shifen Station. This unique location, lined with food stalls and souvenir shops on the railroad tracks, offers a popular sky lantern experience. Writing your wishes on them and releasing them into the sky is a photogenic sight. From here, you can also walk to Shifen Waterfall. The 40-meter-high waterfall is known as "Taiwan's Niagara" and is definitely worth a visit. If you're planning a trip to Taipei, Taiwan, why not take a train to one of the smaller towns? Houtong, Pingxi, and Jingtong are all so beautiful and tranquil! If you don't like crowds, I highly recommend visiting them. Shifen and Jiufen are both beautiful, but they're so crowded that it's difficult to get around and explore every nook and cranny. However, there are very few tourists here, making it a great place to lose yourself in the beautiful scenery. You can also release sky lanterns in Jingtong and Pingxi, and both places have lots of cute souvenirs like keychains!
