Senso-ji: A must visit when you’re in Tokyo!
If you’re spending the bulk or entirety of your time in Tokyo, it’s highly recommended, as there are few experiences quite like this there.
We nevertheless recommend it to anyone visiting Tokyo, as the experience is about more than just Sensoji Temple itself–everything from the approach to the shopping street to Asakusa as a whole leaves a lasting impression, and makes the Sensoji/Asakusa Kannon Temple area a top destination in Tokyo.
It's a temple in Tokyo that's worth the visit, But be advised VERY touristy and busy. It's further more impressive if you haven't seen any temples yet, and this is your first. MANY local shops and food options once you enter the area, and beautiful photo opportunities, especially at night when lit up. The temple also offers Goshuin if you're a collector and the line moves fairly quick here.
Admission to the temple is free. The grounds are always open while the main hall is open daily from morning to early evening.
Asakusa is known for its historic Senso-ji Temple, bustling Nakamise shopping street, and traditional atmosphere that transports you back in time.
Access:
Five-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Ginza Subway Line, Asakusa Subway Line, and Tobu Railways.

Visiting Tokyo for the first time, how to unlock both the tradition and modernity of Tokyo?
Visiting Tokyo for the first time, how to unlock both the tradition and modernity of Tokyo? Or, if you only have 1 day, how to make the most of Tokyo? You can start from Asakusa Temple, walk across the Sumida River along the "Tokyo Water Street" to the Sky Tree, get to know Tokyo with your "vision"; or start a gourmet journey on the tip of your tongue, go to Shibuya Miyashita Park to taste the special food from all over Japan with your "taste"; In the evening, you can climb high and look far, watch a light show at Shibuya SHIBUYA SKY; finally, end the day's journey and return to the Tokyo Royal Prince Hotel Garden Tower Hotel, look up at the night sky of Tokyo and the Tokyo Tower, and "feel" the super romantic Tokyo!
【Asakusa】
The Asakusa area of Tokyo still retains the bold and unrestrained characteristics of the common people in the Edo period of Japan. The streets, temples, and shrines here inject a strong sense of history into this area. Riding a rickshaw, you can get another unique perspective to visit Asakusa. The rickshaw driver is very enthusiastic, taking us deep into the streets, making us feel the retro style of the Asakusa area in the Edo period.
【Sky Tree Street】
The Sky Tree not only overlooks the extraordinary beauty of the whole Tokyo, but also has more than 300 shops at the bottom of the tower, "Tokyo Sky Tree Street (TOKYO Solamachi)", where you can buy and eat Japanese specialties and food. Many shops can correspond in multiple languages, which is very convenient.
【Shibuya Miyashita Park】
When it comes to Shibuya, it reminds people of the bustling and bustling iconic crossroads. The treasure in the center of Shibuya is hidden in the high-rise buildings of Shibuya. Miyashita Park has now been reborn and has become a new type of open space, like a secret garden in a steel and concrete forest. The Shibuya Alley on the first floor is a food alley, where you can taste a variety of local Japanese foods.
【Shibuya SHIBUYA SKY】
The Shibuya landmark Scramble Square is currently the tallest building in Shibuya. The rooftop has the largest rooftop viewing space in Japan, "SHIBUYA SKY", as if walking in the clouds. There is also a special light show at night, like entering the time and space gate of another parallel world, it is really cool!

The traditional city of Asakusa
Asakusa is the traditional downtown area of Tokyo and home to many internationally-known sightseeing places:
You can see "The Golden Poo" - a giant golden statue perched on top of Asahi Beer Hall. It looks comically like a shining dollop of poop, hence the nickname. It is believed that a golden poo brings luck in Japan.
You can see Senso-ji Temple as well. It is one of Tokyo's most historical temples and is an absolute must-see. Look out for the impressive Kaminarimon Gate that marks the entrance-way to the temple, and weave your way down the stall-lined Nakamise-dori shopping street (a great place to get rice crackers and all sorts of souvenirs) to the Hözömon Gate and the main hall. Many visitors also rent a kimono before making this trip. You can find more temples all around Asakusa, including Matsuchiyama Shöden Honryu-in.

The huge lantern at the outer gate is iconic for the site.
It’s also next to Nakamise Shopping Street where you can find tons of food and souvenirs.
A shopping street of over 200 meters leads from the outer gate to the temple's second gate.

Late-Night Delights in Asakusa
It was quite late when we arrived in Tokyo from Osaka; thus, when we went to the neighboring Asakusa, the stalls along Nakamise-dori were mostly closed. Nevertheless, the vibe surrounding Senso-ji was really charming, and there were so many food options nearby. Some of them were among the best in town; we had the best affordable charcoal grilled unagi at Unatoto and ramen at the famous Ichiran. We'll surely go there earlier when we visit Japan next year to explore more.

Sensoji Temple
Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Asakusa. It is one of Tokyo's most colorful and popular temples.
The legend says that in the year 628, two brothers fished a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, out of the Sumida River, and even though they put the statue back into the river, it always returned to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess of Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it Tokyo's oldest temple.

Tokyo Information | Easy Self-Guided Travel for Retirees (Part 2)
To embark on a self-guided trip to Japan, one can do some research beforehand in China or practice planning the trip on their own. For example, if one lives in Zhejiang, they can plan a self-guided trip to Hainan Province, arrange transportation by high-speed rail or flight, and plan one or two-day tours using public transportation upon arrival at the destination.
Heading to Tokyo for a self-guided tour? Here are a few one-day itinerary suggestions to share~
1. One-day tour to Ueno Park, Asakusa, and Tokyo Skytree.
This area is a typical Edo-style downtown area, and for the elderly, it is the place where they can immediately feel the "Japanese style"!
Breakfast can be arranged at the Starbucks in Ueno Onshi Park, then stroll along the trail to the National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo National Museum, and so on. For lunch, you can enjoy Western cuisine at "Ueno Seiyoken".
In the afternoon, take the Ginza Line from Ueno-hirokoji Station to Asakusa Station, take a walk to Senso-ji Temple in Asakusa, have some snacks at Nakamise-dori, and climb up to Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center to see the panoramic view of Asakusa.
After nightfall, take the Asakusa Line from Asakusa Station to Oshiage Station and then head to the Skytree. There are many famous foods in the shopping center, so take a stroll and buy souvenirs while enjoying the night view after dinner!
2. One-day tour of Meiji Shrine, Omotesando, and Roppongi.
This area combines the green jungle of the city with modern civilization. In the morning, you can enjoy a Western-style breakfast at an American restaurant in front of Harajuku. The "Meiji Shrine", surrounded by greenery and a quiet atmosphere, is a favorite spot for the elderly. In the afternoon, you can appreciate the beauty of urban architecture on "Omotesando" and have an afternoon tea date. In the evening, you can enjoy dinner in "Roppongi" and then climb the "Mori Tower" to admire the Tokyo night view. (If you are interested in art appreciation, the "Roppongi Art Triangle" includes the Midtown, Roppongi Hills, and National Art Center Tokyo in Roppongi.)
3. One-day trip to the Ghibli Museum, Inokashira Park, and Kichijoji.
The Ghibli Museum is an art museum suitable for all ages. After enjoying breakfast in Tokyo, head to the outskirts to visit the "Mitaka" Ghibli Museum, a great attraction. Lunch can be enjoyed at the "Red Cap Cafe" inside the museum. After lunch, take a leisurely stroll through the beautiful "Inokashira Park" in any season, and even take a swan boat ride. In the afternoon, visit the nearby "Kichijoji Shopping Street" to browse through various shops and taste local snacks. It will surely be a perfect day trip. (If you still have energy, you can return to Shinjuku City Hall at night to enjoy the night view.)
4. Yokohama day trip
A day trip near the suburbs, Yokohama is also a great place to plan. You can go a little further to arrange "Kamakura", or even go to "Shonan Coast" and "Enoshima". Otherwise, you can go to "Akarenga Warehouse" for Bill's breakfast early in the morning, and then stroll around Yamashita Park and the harbor. For lunch, you can go to Chinatown, and after the meal, visit the Western-style buildings in the "Motomachi" and "Yamate area". In the evening, return to the "Yokohama Landmark Tower" for dinner, and then climb to the 70th floor to enjoy the Yokohama night view. This is also a complete day trip.
In Japan, you can see many silver-haired people traveling around after retirement. They start their life at the age of seventy. In Japan, you can also see many silver-haired people who, although retired, return to the workplace to work hard or participate in photography and flower arrangement courses to cultivate new interests. They manage their colorful life even in their old age. With a young mentality, as long as they have energy and time, come and join the silver-haired Tokyo free tour. Whether it's a couple, or with three to five good friends or old classmates, traveling together can bring new joy to life!
At the age of approaching sixty, I have been traveling to Tokyo for more than thirty years. I hope to bring more joy and help to everyone's travels!

Been to Japan for a few days. It's really a great experience for me. I went to a lot of places in Tokyo (Akihabara, Asakusa, Shinjuku) + Kyoto. Nice people, nice view, and nice environment. Their hospitality is really good, they are really helping even though both of us have language barriers. Am planning to go again probably next year 😅 (or 2024). There are still a lot of places I wanna be.

Evening stroll around Asakusa
Asakusa is one of the must-visit locations in Tokyo. You can see the Sensoji temple, the oldest temple in eastern Japan. I recommend visiting the temple at night, then head towards Sumida park where you can have a great view of Tokyo Skytree, the tallest tower in Japan. During the day, Asakusa is bustling with people, so enjoy its charm at night to avoid the crowd, and have a walk to admire its romantic nightscape.

Asakusa & Surroundings
#fallingforfall
Asakusa - Most people who visit Asakusa will go to Tokyo's oldest temple, Sensoji Temple as well as Nakamise Dori in any season. During fall, there are no exceptions and the whole Nakamise Dori is packed with many visitors.
We went to one of the higher buildings in Asakusa to have an overall view of the area, and we can see the surrounding trees changing to autumn colours amidst all the concrete buildings and the human crowds. We can also see the autumn leaves around the nearby park at Asakusa. Overall, although it is not as breathtaking or beautiful as the parks/gardens we have visited, it's still quite nice. There are also a lot of visitors wearing colourful kimonos at Asakusa.

Asakusa Experience
Asakusa was one of the most vibrant and charming district I visited while in Tokyo. The shopping streets were filled with delicious snack and souvenir shops while the temples were simply stunning to admire.
Its a great place for photos no matter day or night!
Some snacks I tried
Monjayaki - A warm crispy fried snack, with different fillings of your choice. Loved the texture, a rather comforting snack.
Kobi Dango - A rice dumpling coated in soy bean powder, very chewy and soft suitable for all ages!
There were also various restaurants nearby, so you could easily spend an afternoon or evening exploring and shopping. Definitely don't want to miss this place while in Tokyo!

Asakusa is perhaps the most popular tourist spot in the heart of Tokyo. Both foreign and local tourists enjoy walking around as it has a lot of shops and restaurants that surround the famous Senso-ji Temple.
I’ve visited the place four times already but every time I go there, it still gives me that excitement and fresh perspective. Tokyo is such a big city but Asakusa makes you feel like you’re outside the metropolis.
In Asakusa, you can buy souvenirs such as sweets, ceramic bowls and teacups, kimono and yukata, and other traditional items.
