If you've been to Japan a few times and feel like you know the country quite well, I think you should try going south. Kyushu gave me a very different feeling about Japan. The first time I saw pictures of Takachiho Gorge, I had a feeling: I absolutely had to go there. And when I actually set foot in Kyushu, I realized that the most attractive thing about this place wasn't just the scenery. It was the feeling of a more liberal, open Japan, less constrained by familiar rules. The pace of life was also more relaxed. And the nature… was truly breathtaking. Kyushu is a geological area with many active volcanoes, so it has mountain ranges, gorges, lakes, hot springs, and magnificent landscapes created by millions of years of Earth's movement. Mount Aso (Kumamoto Prefecture) and Sakurajima (Kagoshima Prefecture) are two of Japan's most active volcanoes. Thanks to its intense volcanic and geothermal activity, Kyushu also accounts for approximately 35% of Japan's total hot spring (onsen) sources, with famous hot spring towns like Beppu and Yufuin. Much of the island is covered by hills and giant caldera formations created after ancient eruptions. In particular, it's a land steeped in Japanese mythology. There are places where you can not only admire the scenery but also feel like you're stepping into an ancient tale. Initially, I planned to use the Seishun 18 Kippu pass to explore Kyushu by local trains, traveling through different regions. However, after researching, I discovered that the most beautiful places in Kyushu are often not located near train stations or with convenient public transportation. The Takachiho Gorge, mountainous areas, valleys, and volcanic landscapes are often located deep within nature, requiring additional local buses or taxis for transportation, making it quite complicated. Therefore, I chose a day tour with private transportation. If you're looking for a more unique Japan than Kyoto, Tokyo, or Osaka, try Kyushu. You might discover a Japan you've never known before.

Trust me, Kyushu’s vibes are unmatched, especially with those fall colors popping. Kikuchi (熊本県菊池市) Our first scenic pitstop! Kikuchi is famous for its hot springs and beautiful countryside. Kikuchi Valley is a must-see—think lush forests and rivers, especially dreamy in autumn. Address: Kikuchi Valley, 1073-1, Shisui-machi, Kikuchi, Kumamoto. Open year-round. Aso (阿蘇市) Next up: Aso! 🌋 The Aso caldera is an insane sight—massive, otherworldly, and absolutely iconic. Mount Aso is one of the world’s largest active volcanoes, and the viewpoints are pure jaw-drop material. Check out Kusasenri for horseback riding and selfie-worthy views! Takachiho (高千穂町) This place is straight-up mythical! Takachiho Gorge is like walking through a fantasy anime—towering cliffs and waterfalls. Row a boat under Manai Falls (so Insta-ready). Address: Takachiho Gorge, Mitai, Takachiho, Miyazaki. Open daily. Nichinan → Miyazaki (日南市/宮崎市) Cruised down the stunning Nichinan Coast to Miyazaki City. Palms, ocean views, and that laidback energy—chef’s kiss! Don’t sleep on the Udo Shrine, carved into seaside cliffs. Udo Shrine Address: 3232, Oaza Miyaura, Nichinan. 6am–7pm. Aoshima (青島) Cute beach town vibes! Aoshima Shrine sits on a tiny island with the wildest rock formations (nicknamed “Devil’s Washboard”). Great spot for a beach stroll. Address: 2 Chome-13-1 Aoshima, Miyazaki City. Open daily. Hyūga (日向市) This city is famous for its epic surfing beaches and peaceful landscape. It’s a great quick stop to relax and soak in the chill Kyushu life. Yufuin (由布院町) Hello, dreamy hot springs and cuddle-ready cafes! Yufuin oozes cuteness with boutique shops and onsens surrounded by mountains. Don’t miss Lake Kinrin at sunrise—total main character energy. Address: Lake Kinrin, Kawakami, Yufuin, Yufu. Always open. Beppu (別府市) Jigoku-meguri (Hell Tour) is wild—steaming, bubbling hot springs like nothing you’ve ever seen! Beppu is THE spot for quirky hot springs. Address: 559-1 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita. Most “hells” open 8am–5pm. Yanagawa (柳川市) Known for its winding canals and river cruise “punting” rides—giving Venice vibes but uniquely Japanese. Try yanagawa unagi (eel rice)—sooo good! Address: 1-6 Sakuramon, Yanagawa, Fukuoka. Sasebo (佐世保市) Last stop! Sasebo is known for American-style burgers and the gorgeous Kujukushima Islands—you can take a boat tour for some next-level views. Quiet, mysterious, and with the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese shrine. 📸 Photo Highlights: ✨ Mossy Forest ✨ Stone Lanterns ✨ Torii Stairs ✨ Shrine in the Forest ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🌿 13:00|Takachiho Gorge Finally, we've arrived at the highlight of this trip! 💚 Takachiho Gorge is surrounded by steep canyons on both sides, with clear streams flowing through the rock walls. The most iconic feature is: 💦 Manai Falls Standing beside the gorge, you can see the waterfall cascading down from the green forest—truly a dreamlike sight. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚣 Boating at Takachiho Gorge|A Must-Try! If the weather and water conditions permit, boating is highly recommended! Sitting in a small boat, you can enjoy the gorge and Manai Falls from a completely different perspective—a truly unique experience. 👥 Usually, about 2-3 people share a boat. 💰 The screenshot shows the boat fare is approximately ¥2,000 per person. ⚠️ If the boat tour is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the fare will be refunded according to the itinerary. 👉 Reminder: The Takachiho Gorge tour only lasts about 1.5 hours, so if you want to go boating, it's recommended to arrange your boating first upon arrival, and then take your time taking photos. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🚂 15:00|Amaterasu Railway Finally, experience Takachiho's very unique sightseeing railway 🚂 Take the small train through the mountains, enjoying panoramic views of the Takachiho valley and natural scenery. #itinerarycheck The forecast showed heavy rain every day before my trip, so as a planner type, I just decided to "lie flat" and not make any plans. Unexpectedly, the journey was smooth and joyful! If you also prefer a relaxed travel style without rushing or overpacking, save this 5-day, 4-night easygoing Fukuoka guide. Day 1: Arrived at Fukuoka Airport in the afternoon, which is very close to the city center. First, dropped off luggage at the hotel, then visited Canal City where shopping is super convenient. Outdoor enthusiasts can also grab gear at ALPEN. In the evening, I took the "Nakagawa Water Bus," the 6:30 pm Chuo line. The sunset view was fantastic! You can walk from the pier to the main branch of Ichiran Ramen, and the famous Nakagawa Yatai stalls are right next door. Day 2: Spent the whole day at "Uminonakamichi." In the morning, visited the Marine World to see dolphin and sea lion shows, plus super cute otter and penguin feeding sessions. Lunch was at a restaurant inside the park, eating while watching the dolphins swim by. In the afternoon, headed to Seaside Park and rented a bike to ride around at a leisurely pace. There are trampolines, slides, water play, cute little animals, and stunningly clear, glass-like sea water. ° Day 3: Took the train to "Dazaifu." The atmosphere at Tenmangu Shrine was wonderful. Touched the sacred ox, drew a fortune slip, and bought an omamori-it felt very ceremonial. The plum blossom mochi was sweet, soft, and delicious. The Starbucks designed by Kengo Kuma is also a must-visit spot. On the way back, I browsed Yodobashi Camera next to Hakata Station. The 3rd-floor outdoor section has a full range of brands, including Mammut, Arc'teryx, Pata... The Lopia supermarket on the 4th floor is highly recommended! Although it's cash-only, the deals are amazing! A tray of uni was only 70 yen, a huge pizza for just over 20 yen, and a huge selection of sashimi, sushi, and fried foods... Day 4: Spontaneously signed up for a one-day Kyushu tour. Luckily, I got to see Mt. Aso and bought an adorable Kumamon bear made from volcanic ash. At Kusasenri, I went horseback riding. The colored statues at Kumanoza Shrine made me feel like I'd stepped into an anime world. Soaking in the Kurokawa Onsen was incredibly relaxing... and to top it all off, a bottle of cold milk. After that, we rented a car from AQ Car Rental. 🚗🚙 1. Nanzoin Temple ⛩️⛩️ Located in Sasaguri, this temple is home to a massive bronze reclining Buddha. It's said to be about the same size as the Statue of Liberty in the USA! The temple is famous for attracting people who come to pray for good fortune, wealth, and luck in lotteries. 💰💸 It also serves as the starting point for the Shingon Buddhist pilgrimage route, a famous sect in Kyushu. It boasts the world's largest bronze reclining Buddha, weighing over 300 tons, measuring 41 meters long, and standing 11 meters high. 2. Yufuin Floral Village 🏡⛲️ A charming little village nestled in the valleys of Oita Prefecture, exuding a European vibe. The streets are lined with quaint brick houses featuring restaurants, souvenir shops, and trinket stores. Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine ⛩️⛩️ This is one of the most important Shinto shrines in Fukuoka, Japan, serving as the head shrine for over 12,000 Tenmangu shrines nationwide. It is highly renowned for blessings related to education, academic success, and wisdom, drawing over 10 million students and tourists each year to pay their respects. The bronze ox statue 🐂🐮 (Sacred Ox): Legend has it that after Sugawara no Michizane passed away, the ox pulling his funeral carriage stopped at this exact spot and refused to budge. Mount Aso One-Day Tour Guide 🌋 | Departing from Hakata Transportation: Hakata → Shinkansen (30 mins) to Kumamoto, then transfer to the "Aso Boy!" train or Kyushu Odan Express (approx. 1.5 hours) to Aso Station. 🚆 You can also take the Sanko Bus directly from Kumamoto to Mount Aso (one trip per day, reservation required). Morning: Head straight to the "Nakadake Crater"! This is a world-class active volcano. The pale blue lake at the bottom emitting white smoke is absolutely breathtaking~ You can view it from super close up (even in high heels!), but access is restricted when sulfur dioxide levels are high. Remember to check the volcano status before heading out! ⚠️ Food: You have to try the "Volcanic Ash Ice Cream"! It's actually a black sesame and milk flavor. The name sounds wild, but it's incredibly rich and creamy. You can grab one at the souvenir shop in the Mount Aso summit plaza. 🍦 You can also bring home a limited-edition volcano Kumamon figure~ Afternoon: Visit "Kusasenrigahama"~ A massive 780,000-square-meter prairie where cows and horses graze peacefully, with the smoking crater in the distance! You can take a stroll or go horseback riding, and the rainwater pools reflecting the blue sky are perfect for photos. 📸 En-route Attractions: If you have time, drop by Aso Shrine (one of Japan's three major gates, newly restored in 2024) or Shirakawa Suigen (one of the top 100 famous water sources, you can drink right from the spring). ⛩️ Quick Tips 🔔: Make sure to check the crater access info on the day of your trip.
