#localfood #100WaysOfTravel
A One Star Michelin restaurant in Penang and it is not easy to get a table here. You will need to be checking out their website for updates else you can try walking in for any no-show. Here at Auntie’s Gaik Lean’s Old School Eatery, you can taste authentic Peranakan food and it is a halal restaurant too. I got lucky and managed to make two reservations for June and July to try out all their dishes. I got seated at their secret corner with only 3 tables and away from the main dining hall. I ordered their popular nutmeg punch for a start and continued to order 7 main dishes, Kueh Pie Tee, Lor Bak, Beef rendang, Kerabu sotong, Nasi ulam, Sambal prawn with petai and a pengat for desserts.

The first few Penang Michelin one-star restaurant
2023 is the first year where by Michelin guide set foot in Malaysia, and we are delighted to have 4 One-starred restaurant, 2 in Penang and 2 in Kuala Lumpur. Auntie Gaik Lean, being one of the nominated one, is a restaurant specialized in Nyonya delicacies, so we took the opportunity to try it before it is fully booked. We ordered several dishes such as pickeled vege duck soup, sambal brinjal, assam fish, nyonya platter and nyonya style fried chicken. Taste is superb and not too oily or hot, everything is cooked with harmonious taste. Dessert is good as well. Be sure to book now as you can hardly be given a place now for walk ins.

Located in Penang, Malaysia, Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery is renowned for its traditional Nyonya cuisine. The head chef, Auntie Gaik Lean, is a local culinary celebrity who brings her family's Nyonya flavors to the restaurant, offering diners nostalgic and delicious dishes that have even earned a Michelin star.
🚩Ambiance and Atmosphere
Upon entering the restaurant, you are greeted with a cozy decor that exudes the charm of old Penang. Wooden furniture and simple decorations, paired with soft lighting, make the dining experience feel like a journey back in time. The restaurant is always packed, a testament to the allure of its food.
🚩Highlight Dish: Nyonya Duck Soup
Nyonya Duck Soup is a must-try traditional Nyonya soup here. At first glance, it may seem simple, but its rich flavor is truly impressive. The sourness of the pickled vegetables combined with the savory duck meat creates a broth that is a perfect balance of spicy and sour, refreshing yet subtly sweet. The sourness of the pickled vegetables invigorates the taste buds, while the duck meat is tender, and spices like star anise and cloves add depth to the dish. Each sip of the soup tells the cultural story behind Nyonya cuisine.

If you want to experience a variety of flavors, Nyonya Pie Tee is a classic Nyonya dish you must try. This dish not only has a rich texture but also an impressive appearance. The crispy and thin pastry cups are made from delicate batter, fried to a golden hue, and filled with stir-fried turnip, carrots, and shrimp, topped with fried garlic or dried shrimp for added aroma. When eaten, a bit of tangy and spicy sauce is drizzled over, making it refreshing with a hint of spice.
Each bite offers a crispy pastry paired with a soft and rich filling, complemented by the sauce, creating a layered yet balanced flavor. This dish showcases the intricate cooking techniques of Nyonya cuisine and reflects the perfect pursuit of color, aroma, and taste in Nyonya culinary culture.

Penang Star Choice
#Hedonistic Traveler
Like to eat and drink around, accumulated, Hong Kong, Macao, Japan, Korea star Thai, so that the European car wheel people star shop have eaten a lot, but 22 years at the end of the Michelin guide Malaysia, has not seen.
There are only two star restaurants in Penang, both of which are one star, namely Au Jardin, a French restaurant, and Auntie Gaik Lean's Old School Eatery.
Although the author likes to eat French cuisine fine dining, but a come to Penang, and no reason not to eat Nyonya cuisine, so I chose the latter.
It doesn't matter if you book a table online in advance and have to drop a little Deposit, this is normal practice.
Let's start with some drinks, barley water and rose specialty drinks are not expensive, but the taste is bland.
Seeing that there is a Nyonya platter on the menu, you can try several things at once, so you have to try it. The fried shrimp cake is somewhat like tempura, but it is not crispy enough and there is not much shrimp meat. The salad of wild vegetables and carrots is spicy and quite appetizing. The crispy sticks in the golden cup are done quite well, crispy enough, the fillings such as scallions and shrimp meat are plentiful, and they are also slightly spicy and refreshing. The texture and taste of the spiced bean curd skin rolls are to my liking.
I didn't plan to order fried rice, but the shopkeeper strongly recommended it, so I'll give it a try! Refreshing, and a lot of spices feel, quite special, but not to love at first try.
Then order a squid salad, the texture is not tough, sour and spicy, a little like Thai products.
I have to have some dessert to be complete, but there are only three choices here, not even Nyonya pastries. As a result, I chose a traditional sweet soup Pengat, which is full of bananas, taro, etc. in coconut milk ingredients, but the taste is very sweet, which may not be acceptable to everyone. But authentic enough, I, as an overdone sweet devil, naturally have to clear it.
It's finally a pretty special star experience~
