I have been to Hangzhou several times and have seen the tower on the northern hill by West Lake. Not knowing much about it, I was curious about what kind of tower it is and when it was built. When I visited Hangzhou in May with ample time, I decided to hike up the hill to see the tower. The tower is located on Baoshi Hill by West Lake in Hangzhou and is a landmark of West Lake. It is now a nationally protected cultural relic. The current seven-story brick tower is the result of a restoration in 1933 and stands 45.3 meters tall. Not far from Baoshu Tower, the iron finial from the Ming Dynasty that was replaced is displayed. Installing this finial on top of the tower back then was no easy feat. Baoshi Hill, where Baoshu Tower stands, is not very high; it takes about 20 minutes to reach the top. Along the way, there are 20 caves with 28 cliff carvings from the Ming Dynasty, though the carvings are heavily weathered, a few still retain their shapes.
