First time visiting Gubei Water Town? Check out this guide to avoid the pitfalls.
I'm in love with Gubei Water Town in autumn. The red leaves are like fire, and the weather is perfect, not too hot or cold. It's the best time to visit. Gubei Water Town is about to become even more beautiful!
.
I visit every year. Walking through the streets and alleys of the town, I feel like I'm in a southern water town. I like to wander around the town alone in the morning or evening when there are fewer people. I can enjoy the unique beauty of the town and the rare tranquility!
.
🔥What to do in the town?
✅Watch performances
There are many performances in the town, such as the drone Kongming lantern show at Sun Moon Island Square, the armor show, and the music water dance show on Wangjing Street (there are night shows on Fridays and Saturdays). You can check the official schedule for specific performance times.
.
✅Enjoy the night view
You must go to the hilltop church to see the night view. You can take a shuttle bus to the church, then go down the stairs from the cafe to see the night view of the town! You can also go to the Simatai Great Wall to see the night view, but I usually go to the church because the Great Wall is a bit far away.
.
✅Take photos at scenic spots!
This is a must. After the leaves turn red, every corner of the town is perfect for taking photos! Especially where there are homestays, there will be more red leaves! My favorite photo spots: the area near the dyehouse, Wangjing Street, and the hilltop church with a panoramic view of the town!
.
‼️Do you need to stay overnight in the town?
If you want to soak in the hot springs and take night photos, I think it's better to stay overnight because there are no people in the morning! If you want to save money, you can stay at an inn outside the town. Many inns in the scenic area offer free tickets and hot spring tickets for two people, including breakfast. I like it. If you have a bigger budget, you can stay at the Gubei Zhiguang Hotel. If you just want to watch performances and take photos during the day, you don't need to stay overnight!
.
🚎How is the transportation in the town?
You can drive, take a taxi, or take a bus. I took a taxi before, and the fare was over 200 yuan. There are several direct bus routes, all priced at 48 yuan per person, and the journey takes about 2 hours. The specific routes are as follows: Dongzhimen (9:00, 13:00) - Gubei Water Town (12:00, 17:00); CYTS Building (10:00) - Gubei Water Town (14:00); CITS Building (7:30 on weekends and holidays) - Gubei Water Town (16:30); Bird's Nest (9:00 on weekends and holidays) - Gubei Water Town (13:00); Dongjiaominxiang Hotel (9:20 on weekends and holidays) - Gubei Water Town (12:00)
.
🔔About dining
If you are a day-tripper and a solo traveler, try to avoid peak dining times because there are many people! Also, remember to buy group deals for better value! I like the bridgehead cake, snail noodles, and clay pot rice in the town~

Take a boat tour of Gubei Water Town in Beijing.
At the corner of time, I encountered Gubei Water Town in Beijing. That time I took a boat tour, I opened a picture of the perfect fusion of the southern water town and the northern ancient town, which is unforgettable.
One day in the summer vacation of 2024, the three of us set foot on a boat, and the boat slowly sailed into the picturesque water alley. The river is clear and sparkling, reflecting the ancient buildings on both sides. As the boat moved forward, the beautiful scenery of Gubei Water Town unfolded one by one. The ancient stone bridge spans the water, and the traces of the years are clearly visible. The weeping willows by the bridge are swaying in the wind, and the mountains in the distance are undulating, which complements the tranquility of the ancient town.
We sat on the boat, the breeze was blowing, and we felt comfortable. The boatman talked about the history and legends of the ancient town while rowing, which made us understand the development process of the water town and left a good memory. Gubei Water Town

Family Travel in Beijing 🥰
#familytravel
A family trip to Gubei Water Town can be a fun and enriching experience for everyone. It offers various family-friendly hotels, including traditional courtyard inns and modern hotels with amenities like larger rooms and family suites. I recommend you to stay overnight to explore the town at a slower pace and enjoy the night views.
Moreover, if your family love to hike and would like to appreciate the beauty of Great Wall, you can also go to Simatai Great Wall. It only costs you extra 40 RMB from the entrance ticket (which is 140 RMB). You can also engage the children in fun cultural activities like kite making, paper cutting, or trying traditional Chinese painting around the commercial area of W Town.
With its charming water canals, bridges, and ancient architecture, Gubei Water Town is a great place for a leisurely family stroll. The town is safe for children to explore, with plenty of photo opportunities.

Gubei Water Town, Beijing | Night in poetry.
Gubei Water Town, a dreamy northern water town.
Stepping into Gubei Water Town is like stepping through a time tunnel into a world full of poetry and romance. The winding path paved with bluestone slabs leads people through the ancient streets and lanes. The traditional buildings on the side of the road are well-arranged, and the wooden doors and windows and carved beams and columns all exude a simple charm.
In the water town, the rippling river flows slowly, like a smart ribbon. The river is clear and bottomless, and occasionally you can see a few small fish playing in the water. There are ancient stone bridges across the river, some are small and exquisite, and some are magnificent. Standing on the bridge, overlooking the river and the beautiful scenery on both sides, a sense of tranquility and peace arises in my heart.
The night in Gubei Water Town is even more charming. The brilliant lights decorate the entire water town like a poem and a painting. The ancient buildings under the lights are even more mysterious and beautiful. The colorful lights reflected on the river surface are like a brilliant picture scroll. At this time, walking on the streets of the water town, feeling the breeze, listening to the sound of the river, it seems to be in a fairy tale world.
Gubei Water Town has both the boldness of the north and the softness of the southern water town. It is a perfect combination of nature and human wisdom, and a fairyland on earth that people linger on. Here, people can forget the hustle and bustle of the world and enjoy the tranquility and beauty.

Come here when the leaves turn red...
Gubei Water Town in Miyun, Beijing is now a national tourist attraction. We came here again in the summer. The water town is very distinctive, with small doors and courtyards all having different features, especially the greenery that decorates the walls. It must be even more beautiful in autumn. You can come to Gubei Water Town to see the red leaves, which will give you a different feeling from seeing the red leaves in Xiangshan. The red leaves on the streets of the small town.

Promise me, you must visit Beijing's 'Jiangnan Water Town' this summer
Promise me, you must visit the secret realm of 'Jiangnan in the suburbs of Beijing' this summer 🌿. Seek 'half a day of leisure in a fleeting life,' stroll along the long dike with willows, ride a small boat, shuttle between the drizzle and the swallows flying, and immerse yourself in this gentle and picturesque Jiangnan dream. As Beijing enters the heat of summer, little do people know that deep in the suburbs of Beijing, there is a hidden 'misty rain Jiangnan.'
The bluestone road, the leisurely rowing boat, the gray tiles and white walls, the small bridges and flowing water, all sketch a vivid picture of the Jiangnan water town. With the footsteps of summer, Gubei Water Town adds more Jiangnan charm surrounded by green water, making people feel like they are in another world.
🌟 Recommended 9 best photo spots in summer to let you appreciate the unique charm of 'Jiangnan in the suburbs of Beijing':
Yinjian Bridge: The green water surrounds the bridge, the climbing tiger is lush, the beauty in Hanfu holds an umbrella on the bridge, and the ancient charm is long.
Chaohechuan Bridge: The rowing boat gently ripples, the white geese play in the water, the willows are swaying, and you can enjoy a poetic life while sipping tea.
Banshanju: Walk down the wooden plank road, overlook the whole view of the water town, and take in the distant mountains and nearby waters.
Hongzhuang Bridge: Sit quietly at the bridgehead, taste bridgehead cakes and bamboo tube coffee, and feel the unique leisure time of Jiangnan.
Yongshun Dyehouse: The courtyard is full of dyed cloths fluttering, colorful, and the beauty of tradition is beyond words.
Qianshan Teahouse: Beside the stone bridge, water lilies are in full bloom, the fragrance of tea is overflowing, and it is a microcosm of misty rain Jiangnan.
Changdao Bridge: The green water surrounds the ancient house, the rowing boat slowly passes under the bridge, holding an umbrella in the long corridor, as if traveling through time.
Tanghezai Bridge: On the stone bridge, overlooking the bustling market, the summer scenery of Xiaotang River is picturesque and beautiful.
Yinghua Academy: The door frame and the symmetrical composition of Chinese style show the classical elegance, a holy place for taking photos.
In addition, there are the Wind House Kite and Jiankun Hall Lantern Shop, the former with kites flying, full of new Chinese style; the latter with red lanterns hanging high, between the ancient gray walls, appreciating the brilliant art of intangible cultural heritage lanterns.

Gubei Water Town - A hidden gem of Jiangnan scenery in the north
If you've never been to Jiangnan, Gubei Water Town is also a good choice.
The place is super photogenic, and the scenery inside is quite nice. There are also some Jiangnan snacks like tofu corners, plum cakes, dried vegetable buns, wontons... (But the prices inside are extremely high, a bottle of water costs 8 yuan
Climbing the Great Wall at night is one of the unique features of Gubei Water Town. You can take a ride up and down, and you only need to climb a short section. From the top of the mountain, you can see the entire water town scenery.
There is a drone show at seven o'clock in the evening, which might be just an ordinary drone show and not very spectacular. But Gubei Water Town has a good location, backed by the Great Wall. Two phoenixes fly up from the side of the Great Wall, and with the mountain scenery, it is quite magnificent. Then there are sky lanterns rising from the square, with ancient buildings in the background, complementing each other. Then the drones form many patterns, with 'Happy May Day', '2024', 'Gubei Water Town', 'Simatai Great Wall'... a myriad of changes
Gubei Water Town has already very much restored the feeling of the small bridges and flowing water of Jiangnan. But after all, it is different. Because I am originally from Shaoxing, I could tell from the first glance at the water town that most of the houses in the water town are made of stone bricks, while the houses in the Jiangnan water towns are mostly wooden structures. Moreover, Gubei Water Town has a heavier commercial atmosphere, while the real Jiangnan water towns are full of the breath of life.
So if you have the time and energy, you should still visit Jiangnan. People's attachment to Jiangnan is not only for the architecture but also for the culture, history, and most importantly, the bustling scene of 'smoky willows and painted bridges, wind curtains and green screens, interspersed with a hundred thousand households'. Because I have always studied in the north, going to Gubei Water Town is also a way of forcibly feeling homesick, haha

In the smoke-filled March, Beijing secretly harbors a misty water town with small bridges and flowing water
Spring is getting stronger, flowers are blooming like a brocade, and it is a good time to go out and travel.
Every spring🌸, I will stay in Gubei Water Town for two days.
Here, the green bricks and black tiles, the small bridges and flowing water, all tell of the tenderness of the south of the Yangtze River and the charm of the north.
If you also want to experience the bright spring of Gubei Water Town, feel free to copy my travel route.

Fortunately, Li Bai never came; otherwise, our Chinese textbooks would be a few pages thicker
It's not Jiangnan... but it rivals Jiangnan🛶
I found the poetic "misty rain of Jiangnan" in the north.
Sit in a rowing boat, tread on the stone-paved roads, listen to the rain hitting the banana leaves, and talk over green plum wine.
If you don't feel like working, just take a walk in this small town👣

The most beautiful season in Gubei Water Town, you must not miss it, otherwise you will regret it!!
The autumn in Gubei Water Town is so beautiful! The red leaves full of the walls are very beautiful, and the night view is also very charming. The horse-face skirt and Gubei Water Town are very match! Play for a day without accommodation!
Ticket: The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei pass bought on the spot, 80 yuan per person.
South Gate Entrance
Yongshun Dyeing Workshop
Yue Lao Temple
Take a boat. Half-way ticket 80 per person, charter 400, if there are five or six people, it is better to charter. Buy a half-way ticket, you can go directly to Riyue Island Square after getting off the boat. At Riyue Island Square, you can watch the performance at a specified time; Riyue Island Square is also very close to the church on the top of the mountain, you can go to the church on the top of the mountain from here.
Watch the performance at Riyue Island Square
Church on the top of the mountain. The sunset at the church on the top of the mountain is absolutely amazing, and you can also overlook the small town and flowing water. The night view of the entire small town from here is also good.
Food: The meal eaten at the "Yinghua Inn" tastes okay, no need to queue, most of the people who go to play bring their own food, so there are not many people eating in the store
In fact, if you don't plan to climb the Simatai Great Wall at night, it's enough to play in Gubei Water Town for a day, no need to stay overnight, and you can return to Beijing around eight o'clock after watching the performance in the evening

The Dreamy Gubei Water Town
Getting There - I took a trip with FCN/ Laowai, which provided me with bus transportation from Chaoyang Beijing to Gubei Water Town
Attractions - The whole town is an attraction. At 7 pm they have musical fountain show, but this is no ordinary fountain show. So, if you come here, make sure you watch it. During the day, they have a variety of traditional music performances, opera, etc.
Hotels - They have a resort and smaller hotels with varying level of service/amenities. I did not stay overnight my first time there, but I kinda regretted it. The hotels look so cute with fake-traditional
Food & Restaurants - There are many restaurants, coffee shops, and many many tea houses.#gubei #gubeiwatertown #traditionaltown #traditional #china #replica #chinatrip

古北水镇 Gubei Water Town (Simatai Great Wall)
#Simatai #Gubei Shuizhen #Beijing
Today is 9/8/2023, the season changes from hot to spring in China. Departing from Haidian District, heading to the ancient city tourist attraction on the outskirts of Beijing, Gubei Water Town, which has an atmosphere similar to the riverside towns of Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Wuzhen. It is about 100 kilometers away from the center of Beijing. It takes about 2 and a half hours by bus (including traffic jams).
The entrance fee is 160 yuan. If you want to take a boat, it costs about 120 yuan more. Next to the ancient city is the Simatai Great Wall. You can climb it, but there is an additional fee. The overall atmosphere is good. There are rivers and mountains. It can be considered another good suburban resort in Beijing.

Lovingly restored and renovated…
A beautiful Chinese idyll to explore and experience about two hours outside of Beijing by taxi. Winding streets and alleys filled with lush greenery reveal their secrets as you wander the cobbled streets and waterways. A truly special place guaranteed to leave some lasting memories. Try the night tour of The Great Wall via cable car and watch the sunset. Magical!

Watertown at Night!
Gubei Water Town is located on the northeast side of Miyun County in Beijing. This water town is about 2 hours drive from Beijing city. It is known for its northern architectural design and the culture and history of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China historic period. Majority of the buildings in the town have been reconstructed using the traditional courtyard design. This Watertown has grown from just 5 ancient villages and a water source into a renowned holiday destination. There are lots of food and gorgeous little shops to visit. Night view is exceptional. I highly recommend to be there at night. We had a fabulous experience.

A traditional Chinese New Year experience
Since arriving in China over three years ago, back in 2019; I was so excited to see the traditional celebrations during Chinese New year, try the local cuisine and understand the meaning of Chinese zodiacs. I arrived in China to see bustling streets holding Street food, music, large groups dancing, games of Mahjong on the street, to name a few. Unfortunately, less than 5 months later, just as the Chinese New year was beginning, the havoc of COVID-19 erupted. All events were cancelled, even with decorations just having been put up in the city's temples. Everyone put on masks, and stayed away from others. The whole city became quiet and eerie overnight as shops closed. No celebrating Chinese New year in 2019.. I waited each year, hoping for the Chinese New year to wake up the city again, but each year it stayed the same. Until 2023, where we leave the unpredictability of the tiger and welcome the balanced and calm new beginnings during the #yearofrabbit! At the first opportunity I traveled to Beijing's Gubei water town, an ancient style village. On arrival I was welcomed by a traditional lion and dragon dance at the entrance of the town. Throughout the day, traditional orchestra, puppet shows, dances, drums, and more dragon dances took place. Everyone smiling and grateful to be a part of this day. In the middle of the town there were a variety of stalls selling dumplings, noodles, Chinese New year memorabilia, DIY glasswork, kite making and more. It was a day to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter in China.

Autumn in Gubei Water Town
Getting There - We left a drizzly looking day in Beijing and arrived in Gubei just after lunch. There was a lot of traffic on the way and we were worried there would be lots of people here but we were pleasantly surprised! Walking around was easy and there was limited queuing for delicious food.
Attractions - So many things to see from the beautiful brick work to the green leaves turning red and even a traditional kite shop. We loved watching the musical fountain and different shows along the way.
Hotels - We stayed at Yuanzhu Xiaoshe Villa. We had a two bedroom apartment with a great little kitchen. We only stayed one night but the apartment was cosy. It was outside of the scenic area but super close.
Food & Restaurants - Too many to mention!! We ate amazing duck and a ridiculous amount of street snacks! Check out the sweet potato corner store lady. They smoke them in enormous pots!
Shopping - Just about everywhere you look there are things to be bought. From your usual magnets and postcards to clothing and headgear.

Water Town Village
#bucketlistreboot
Situated in Gubeikou Town of Miyun County in Beijing, Gubei Water Town surrounds the beautiful Mandarin Duck Lake Reservoir.
Most buildings are reconstructed in the traditional courtyard style. This town possesses an old fashioned simplicity and elegance. Row upon Row of houses and long Hutongs show the style and features of the Old Town.
Take Subway Line 2 or Line 13 to Dingzhimen Station. Then take bus 980 or 980 Express to Miyun Bus station and then transfer to bus Mi37, Mi50 or Mi51. The most simply way is get a day tour from Beijing.
Gubei Water Town is a place that you can come to visit all year around, and every season brings different scenery.

Romantic Little Water Town (Beijing)
I visited Gubei water town in autumn and I believe it is the most magical time to go. The leaves are red and orange and real and the air is crisp and clean. It is not very busy as the temperature is quite low in October. Warmer in the day time but quite cold at night.
There are some cool restaurants and bars and a light show in the square. I happened to stumble upon the light show by mistake and really happy that I did. The sky filled with drones creating different pictures in the sky. Fun to watch.
Be sure to stay in a hotel or inn right by the town or inside so you can experience the town at night. Breathtakingly beautiful.
You can take cable car up to the Great Wall the next day to view the water town from above.

Wandered soul
Spent an amazing 3 days in Gubei Watertown. A great escape from the hustle and bustle of Beijing. We spent our days exploring the beautiful town, going on boat rides, hiking up the Wall and enjoying delicious food and coffee. The fountain and light show was a particular bonus too - stunning!
It was a dreamy long weekend. 100% recommend!

📍Getting There - It’s in Miyun district, Beijing city. We took a taxi from Huairou district around 75 minutes around 300 RMB. But you will have hard time getting a car back to the city if you don’t have an own car or don’t book a hotel.
⛰ Attractions - The town itself is a beautiful museum.
🏨 Hotels - There are many hotels in the town which are around 400+ RMB per night and some outside of the town around 150+RMB per night.
🍜 Food & Restaurants - Many Chinese and some western restoration.

📍Gubei water town, Beijing.
🚖 We took a taxi from Huairou district around 75 minutes and around 300 RMB.
☕️ The menu was very tiny 😃 Just a few drinks and two cakes.
💰Sky high prices but it’s understandable because of the location and the view. The coffee was 58 RMB, cakes 38, 48 RMB.
⛰ It’s just a chill place to sit, enjoy morning tea or sunset 🌅 be taken by the view.

Gubei, Beijing
I know that this town was made to look this way and is for tourists but man it’s amazing. Seriously worth the trip. We took a private but up but there are also city buses that drive to and from the city so that might be a slower but cheaper option. Gubei is another thing I planned on doing again but never did. Autumn was stunning out there, my first real autumn too, and I wanted to go back during other seasons too but never got the chance. There are hotels, restaurants and bars there as well as part of the Great Wall so we were planning on spending the night and seeing the town lit up but even the time we were there the lights were lovely. 100% suggest you give Gubei a visit.
