Travel Checklist: Exploring Ipoh’s British Colonial Gems Beyond the Food Scene
#travelchecklist #100waysoftravel #malaysia #ipoh
While most tourists visit Ipoh for its cheap and delicious food, I highly recommend adding the city’s beautiful British colonial architecture to your travel checklist. Iconic landmarks like the Ipoh Railway Station, often called the "Taj Mahal of Ipoh," and the grand Birch Memorial Clock Tower are must-sees. The Ipoh Town Hall and Old Post Office, with their majestic columns and intricate details, transport you back to a time when the city thrived under British rule. Walking through these heritage buildings makes you feel like you're in the UK, offering perfect spots for photography. These architectural gems are a significant part of Ipoh’s charm and deserve just as much attention as the city's famous food.

Birch Memorial Clock Tower
If you find yourself in Ipoh, walking along the Heritage Trail should be one of the highlights. The Birch Memorial Clock Tower stands out apart from other structures as it serves as a reminder of a murdered British "Resident" or in other words, an appointed colonial political governor.
Located in Ipoh's older sector, it is surrounded by notable buildings such as the State Mosque, several heritage bank buildings, the Ipoh Town Hall/ Old Post Office and Ipoh Courthouse. The Padang Ipoh is also within a short walking distance.
The many closed food stalls located within the open square surrounding the clock tower are probably an afterthought as it doesn't seem to be integrated well.

Birch Memorial Clock Tower ✨
A historical memorial at Ipoh. A nice place for a snapshot. No admission required as it is a standalone clock tower. Located on the sunny side so it is hot all day round to visit.

Food stalls also available for everyone. I was enjoyed the foods in Gerai Bajet Kukus Corner shop, it was very tasty. Overall, worth a visit. ❤️

Historically valuable place
It just a memorial tower with clock. Beautiful location and tower. Nice walk heading up to it. There's a food court you can visit.
It's a relaxing place to be - really cool to imagine what it might have been like back in the day, listening for the clock tower on the hour.
The toilet is clean too. It's worth visiting if you're in Ipoh.

Birch Memorial Clock Tower 🕰️✨
A historical memorial at Ipoh. A nice place for a snapshot. This place had an unexpected view on my way walking i saw the birch memorial..plus a lot of people walking around to take pictures though. 📸

The mural on the tower itself depicts the growth of civilization via 44 historical figures in four panels. It's definitely a beautiful specimen of colonial architecture. 👍🏻✨

Birch Memorial Clock Tower is located along Jalan Dato Sagor, and is around 350 meters 5 minutes walk from Ipoh railway station.
This Victorian-style tower was unveiled in 1909. It was a dedication to the first British Resident of Perak, J.W.W Birch, who was assassinated on 2nd Nov 1875. The clock tower had one mother bell and four smaller bells, which used to strike the chimes of Big Ben.
Medan Selera Dato' Sagor is a food court located next to the Birch Clock tower and is opened daily from 0700-1700.
Masjid Negeri Perak is the state mosque of Perak, built and completed in August 1968, only a 2 minute walk from Birch clock tower.
A 2 minutes walk from the Birch clock tower, you will see the Ipoh town hall, which was built and completed in 1916.
