Blue House Cluster: A Representation of Old Hong Kong Culture
The Blue House Cluster consists of a group of traditional residential buildings and serves as an excellent place to explore the culture of old Hong Kong. Constructed in 1922, the Blue House is memorable for its distinctive blue hue, which has helped preserve this characteristic architecture. The units in the Blue House feature spacious balconies, reflecting the architectural style of Lingnan, and have been used in the past for various purposes such as martial arts schools, medical halls, and free schools. The neighboring old residences—the Yellow House and the Orange House—share a similar fate.
During my visit to the 'Hong Kong House of Stories,' I learned about the life of Hong Kong in bygone days. There were staff on hand to provide detailed explanations, and many interactive activities for children to experience. The children were engrossed, making it a great family activity and destination.

Strolling around Wan Chai led us to this eye-catching blue coloured building. It is actually named after the colour of the wall - Blue House. It is a Grade I historic building which is the typical Lingnan-style house built in 1922 with wide balconies. It played multiple roles back in the days where it was a hospital, temple, and even a kung fu studio.

The Historical blue house
The Blue House is a historic building located in Wan Chai, one of the oldest districts in Hong Kong. Built in the 1920s and 1930s, it is a four-storey shophouse that was once used as a tenement building for working-class families. Over the years, the building has undergone significant changes, including being painted blue in the 1990s to create a distinctive look.
In recent years, the Blue House has become an important cultural landmark in Hong Kong, as a symbol of the city's heritage and a testament to the stories of past residents. In 2017, the Blue House was officially opened to the public as a community center and cultural hub, featuring a history museum, heritage gallery, community center, and artist-in-residence space. The revitalization project aimed to preserve the building's cultural significance while also providing a space for community activities and events.

An old blue-painted building in Wanchai, Hong Kong, known as the Blue House, has won the United Nations Heritage Protection Award in conjunction with its adjacent Orange House and Yellow House. This is a Tang Dynasty building with Lingnan architectural features. It is a four-storey building. In history, there was once the only English school in the Blue House that was the only English school in the Wan Chai area, and the one provided free education for children. "Mirror Hanyi", there is also a martial arts hall run by Lin Fei, the nephew of Huang Feihong's apprentice Lin Shirong. Up to now, there are still residents living upstairs. Nowadays, visitors can visit the Hong Kong Story House in the Blue House to learn about the history of the Hong Kong community and relive the charm of the old age through those nostalgic antiquities.
