I have been to Chengdu several times and visited some places in and around the city. The People's Park, known for its 'Longmen Array' reputation, was my first visit. The weather was exceptionally good on the day I visited the People's Park, as most of the time during the May Day period, Chengdu was either raining or cloudy. On the day of the visit, the weather cleared up, and the sky mirror of sunny Chengdu was very beautiful. While experiencing the slow life of Chengdu, watching the ever-changing clouds was a very comfortable life! Chengdu People's Park is located at No. 12 Shaocheng Road, Citang Street, in the city center of Chengdu, covering an area of 112,639 square meters. It is the largest open scenic garden historical park in the bustling city center. In Chengdu People's Park, through in-depth communication, one can deeply feel that this is truly a 'people's park' and a rare century-old city garden. Originally named Shaocheng Park, Chengdu People's Park was established in 1911 and is one of the earliest modern parks in China, as well as the first modern park in Sichuan. In the third year of the Xuantong era of the Qing Dynasty (1911), General Yukun, who was stationed in Chengdu, consulted with Zhou Shanpei, the Sichuan Provincial Encouragement of Industry Road, to build a park on Citang Street to open up the city. Only the Bannermen were allowed to do business and make a living in the park, and park entrance fees were collected to allow people to come in and play. At the same time, the paddy fields, wasteland, the front hall of the Zhenglan Banner, stables, warehouses, and the empty spaces of the Yongshun, Yongqing, and Yongji alleys where the Banner people lived behind the Guandi Temple on Citang Street were demolished and relocated. Within half a year, flowers were planted, trees were cultivated, and buildings such as the Yingxi Tower, Guanjia Tower, Songyun Tower, and Lake Heart Pavilion were constructed, covering an area of more than 50 acres. The origin of Shaocheng Park is directly related to the naming of the old Chengdu city walls. The foundation of Chengdu city originally had a distinction between the 'Greater City' and the 'Lesser City.' As early as 311 BC during the reign of King Hui of Qin, Chengdu had both Taicheng (also known as the Greater City) and Shaocheng (also known as the Lesser City). The underground can show the shelter where civilians took a cover during air bombing. The memorial Stella keeps a memory about those horrible days. It is one of the earliest parks in Chengdu and even in China. 🌳In 1911, the Qing Dynasty was on the verge of collapse, and the Manchu people in Chengdu, who had lost their rice supply, were living in poverty. Therefore, General Yu Kun of Chengdu opened up more than 50 mu of land on Citang Street in the south corner of Shaocheng, planted flowers and trees, and built a park, which was open to the public for a fee. He also allowed the Manchu people to open businesses in the park to make a living. 🌳Since 1718, when Nian Gengyao built the Manchu City on the basis of Shaocheng in Chengdu, the city within a city, which blocked the progress of the Manchu and Han people, was finally opened. I LOVED my experience at the people’s park in Chengdu. Here are some of the things you can do while there: - explore the principals of the Chinese government by walking through their shrine of Chinese values - watch old people play traditional Chinese games - read through the matchmaking wall! (So much fun, couldn’t stop laughing translating every paper) - eat yummy ice cream / tea! - watch a GORGEOUS Chinese traditional dancing performance at a tea house (this was my favorite part).
