Charming little town, Montreux,Switzerland
#100waysoftravel #swiss #solotrip #travel #thingstodo #museums #myitinerary
Day trip in Montreux, raining, early October 2024. Little charming town as their main language is French. Stayed overnight at hotel J5 Hotels Helvetie MONTREUX, the hotel has conserved all its old-world charm since 1800s and room is well furnished and cozy, along with a small balcony where you may see church Église du Sacré-Cœur Catholic Church beside hotel. Upon check-in any hotel Montreux, you will be given a Montreux Riviera Card: a real key that gives you free travel on public transport and discounts on many activities or you may use your Swiss pass to have the same privileges. Head off towards Chillon Castle (château de Chillon in French) via bus from the hotel. It is located on the shores of Lake Geneva, near Montreux in Veytaux, Switzerland. It offers historic exhibitions in the castle and requires around 2 hours to explore. An audio guide can be rent from the souvenir store before you proceed to explore the place. Chill at the cafe at the entrance of castle for a coffee break, they have indoor and outdoor seatings. Next I took a bus ride for Musée de Montreux visit, which shared the historic of Montreux from Neolithic times to the golden age. You will need at least an hour to complete the exhibition, most description are not explained in English language and they don’t have the audio guide. After complete, I walked down the little hillslope and went for a coffee break at one of the cafe near railway station, sat near to the window enjoying the moment. As the day going to end, walk over towards lake Geneva, stroll along the lake where you may see the famous statues of Freddie Mercury statue and Statue Les Amoureux. You will be greeted by the stunning panoramic views of the lake and wait for the sunset view, before ending the day.

Chillon Castle is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. With this unique location, this water castle is a historic building in Switzerland. It's not a very big castle to begin with, but it definitely has a rich history behind it. It is easily accessible. You can get here by train, boat, bus, car, or on foot.
By the way, to get a special souvenir home, this castle has its own wine, Clos de Chillon, which is produced from the region’s white grape.

Chillon Castle on Lake Geneva: A beautiful blend of nature and history.
The most amazing thing about the European continent is its rich cultural heritage. The various castles scattered across the continent are a source of pride for their respective countries and are the closest thing to a fairy tale on Earth.
After seeing so many castles perched on hills during your travels, a castle suddenly appearing on the surface of a mirror-like lake is truly breathtaking.
Chillon Castle, known as a "strange pearl" in architectural history, is a symbol of the strength and beauty of the Middle Ages. It is surrounded by Lake Geneva and the Alps, and is built on a foundation buried 300 meters deep in the lake and built against the mountain. From the outside, it is integrated with the hillside and seems to float on the lake, offering a great view.
This is one of the most famous monuments in Switzerland. It is known as one of the "Top 10 Castles in Europe" and is said to be the most visited place in Switzerland. It was the location for the Disney animation "The Little Mermaid" and the prototype of Prince Eric's castle.
There are very few historical records about Chillon Castle. Archaeologists have excavated and confirmed that the history of Chillon Castle can be traced back to the Bronze Age, and it has been built and renovated over several centuries to become what it is today. "Chillon" in French means "stone", and perhaps its name comes from the huge rock protruding from the lake shore where it is located.
This fortress is close to the lake and is adjacent to the cliffs that cross the Alps from Italy to the north, blocking the entrance to the hinterland of Europe. On the city wall facing the water and the mountain, there are arrow slits, crenels, gun eyes, and gun mouths, which are densely packed, and there is a momentum of one man being the pass and ten thousand men being open.
Chillon Castle is like a manor, with complete daily life and luxury facilities, and was once a summer palace for the royal family to escape the heat.
However, what is shocking is the dungeon of the castle. There are sturdy stone pillars in the dungeon, and the rusty iron rings and chains on them are still telling the bloody and desperate they have witnessed. It is said that 200 prisoners have been imprisoned.
Chillon Castle is known for its appearances in the works of famous writers such as Rousseau, Hugo, and Dumas, but it is the British poet Byron who really made the castle widely known. Hearing that a priest in Geneva in the 16th century was chained and imprisoned in this dark dungeon for as long as six years, Byron was passionate and imaginative, and immediately wrote the immortal chapter "The Prisoner of Chillon".
Today's Chillon Castle is as romantic and beautiful as ever. The exterior of the castle is simple and deep, sturdy and solid. Connected to the shore by a bridge. The medieval relics in the castle are quite rich, including defensive towers, arsenals, ducal residences, libraries, medical rooms, chapels, wine cellars, etc.
Entering the castle, through the railings and windows, the sun shines on Lake Geneva, refracting into blue-green light, showing a mysterious color.
In a siege in early 1536, the defenders of Chillon Castle resisted for three weeks under the condition that all supplies were cut off, showing how strong Chillon Castle was as a military fortress. Later, due to food shortages, the defenders had to declare their surrender. When the victor entered the castle, the defenders had already drilled into the secret road of the castle and disappeared on Lake Geneva.
The anecdotes tell the vicissitudes of the years, and the wind and rain can't hide the high light.

Travel Guide Summary from Three Trips to Switzerland (Part 1)
Travel Guide Summary from Three Trips to Switzerland (Part 1)
As a European travel enthusiast, Switzerland is the only European country I have visited three times, and it was also the first country my husband and I visited on our European free travel journey. Although the cost of traveling in Switzerland is slightly higher than in other European countries, the travel experience in Switzerland is the safest, most comfortable, and most convenient among all European countries. It is also very suitable for family trips (with elderly and children). Each route will be shared in separate posts, so friends interested in traveling to Switzerland, please stay tuned.
First, let me introduce Switzerland. Switzerland is located in central Europe, bordering Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, Italy, and France. The capital is Bern (yes, not Zurich or Geneva). Switzerland's natural scenery is beautiful, with rich tourism resources, and is known as the "World Park." German, French, Italian, and Romansh are all official languages of Switzerland. Therefore, when we travel to Switzerland, we often refer to the German-speaking region, the French-speaking region, and the Italian-speaking region. The level of English proficiency in Switzerland is very high, so communicating in English is not a problem at all.
How to get to Switzerland
✔ Flights from China to Switzerland generally land in Geneva or Zurich.
✔ Geneva is close to France and is the headquarters of the United Nations, making it convenient to explore travel destinations in the French-speaking region from Geneva.
✔ Zurich is the largest city and shopping destination in Switzerland and is also the starting point for most people's trips to Switzerland.
Let's first talk about the travel route in the French-speaking region. Generally, a three-day trip is recommended. It is suggested to stay in Montreux or Vevey for the entire trip without changing hotels and then visit various small towns.
✔ Montreux: A city along Lake Geneva, one hour by train from Geneva and three hours by train from Zurich. The most famous attraction here is the Chateau de Chillon. There is a path by the Chateau de Chillon that you can walk along the lakeshore to the center of Montreux, which is a very nice walking trail. The Montreux Jazz Festival is held every July.
✔ Vevey: A city along Lake Geneva, only five minutes by train from Montreux (half an hour by bus). The eight-meter-high fork standing in the lake in front of the Alimentarium is the symbol of Vevey. From late May to mid-June each year, the hills from Vevey to Montreux are covered with wild daffodils, which is very spectacular.
✔ Lavaux: The most beautiful section of Lake Geneva, with 18 kilometers of terraced vineyards planted along the steep slopes by the lakeshore (listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site like Bordeaux in France). The main production area of Swiss white wine "Chasselas." It is about ten minutes by train from Vevey.
✔ Morges: A city along Lake Geneva, located between Geneva and Lausanne, and the late residence of Audrey Hepburn. Across the lake is the French town of Evian.
In addition to these beautiful small towns, the French-speaking region has a hidden benefit, which is the use of the Swiss Travel Pass to visit the French towns across the lake for free. More details will be shared in a separate post later.

Fairy-tale Castles - The Ancient Castles of Switzerland
The ancient castles of Switzerland. Each castle occupies the best position in the region, a place either with pleasant scenery, where one can see the Alps through the lake, or a strategic pass between two countries. The castles are rather aloof, standing there, waiting for people to come and admire them.
One of the top ten ancient castles in Europe, Chillon Castle, is one of them. It is located on the shore of Lake Geneva, and because its foundation is in the lake, it gives the impression that it is built on the lake, or rather, floating on it. Its location is precisely between France and Switzerland. Since it is made of stone, it remains very sturdy even though it was built in the 13th century, and its name also means 'stone,' which is quite straightforward.

Chillon Castle in Switzerland is renowned as the world's most beautiful prison
From Geneva to Montreux, the journey is a picturesque scene. There are many historical and cultural sites left from the Middle Ages in Switzerland, and we made a special trip to visit the most famous medieval water castle built on the rocks of Lake Geneva—Chillon Castle.
It is acclaimed by the public as one of the 'Top 10 Castles in Europe' and 'the world's most beautiful prison'. The British poet Byron left his signature on the stone pillars of the castle, and his work 'The Prisoner of Chillon' adds a cultural hue to Chillon Castle.
Due to its very ancient history, people can no longer accurately trace the origins of Chillon Castle. The earliest written records of Chillon Castle that have been found date back to the 11th century.
Chillon Castle guards the strategic pass of the Alps and is a military fortress, with defensive arrow slits, gun ports, cannon ports, and watchtowers on its walls. Inside the castle, there are many secret passages and mechanisms, up and down, like a labyrinth.
Under the guidance of a professional tour guide, we visited all the currently open areas, where a large number of medieval relics are displayed. Each indoor space within the castle is not very large, but the areas are clearly defined, including the kitchen, wine cellar, bedroom, duke's residence, bathroom, heraldic hall, scriptorium, parliament building, chapel, treasure vault, underground prayer room, torture chamber, prison...
Picture 10 is the royal privy, which leads directly into the lake. I looked down and actually felt a bit of vertigo~

Indeed, there is a flying Santa Claus in Montreux
Montreux Christmas Market is one of the largest Christmas markets in Switzerland, full of ceremonial sense.
A huge reindeer-shaped light is set up by the lake, with small Christmas trees hanging with small colored lights next to it, and the small wooden houses next to it are full of colorful goods.
People are bustling here, enjoying the atmosphere of relaxation and indulgence.
Date: November 23 to December 24, 2023
🌟Santa Claus sleigh
Every day, Santa Claus will ride in a sleigh, led by reindeer to fly over Lake Geneva, dragging a long firework behind him.
It's like being in a fairy tale world. When Santa Claus flies in front of you, the expectation and joy of Christmas will be infinitely magnified.
Time: 17:00, 18:00, 19:00 every day and 16:00 on Saturdays.
🌟Rochers-de-Naye
Take the cogwheel train to the top of Rochers-de-Naye at an altitude of 2015 meters, go to Santa Claus's house, get close to Santa Claus, and make the fairy tale come true.
🌟Chillon Castle
Chillon Castle is built on the rocks by Lake Geneva. It looks like it is floating on the water from a distance. The architectural style is unique. It is one of the most famous ancient relics in Switzerland. It is known as one of the 'Top 10 Castles in Europe' among the people. During Christmas season, Chillon Castle will stage a time travel, allowing people to return to the Middle Ages and celebrate the festival in an ancient way.

Château de Chillon, Switzerland
Château de Chillon - an 800-year-old water castle
A stunningly grand building: a closed feudal castle that combines military defense, storage, prison, church, and noble court functions. We went to the castle on the way from Lausanne to Geneva, held the explainer firmly, followed the planned route, and needed plenty of physical strength and patience to check in at more than forty spots in the castle.
Each room, the living room is simple but full of romantic atmosphere, it is rare that the interior and exterior of the building have been preserved and reasonably repaired for hundreds of years. The church and the master bedroom are cleverly connected, two corridors, towers, city walls firmly play the role of defensive fortress. I lost my hat during the tour and went back to find it successfully on the stone window of the castle. The moment of being moved and happy was born, the castle is like a wise and considerate elder, guarding the mountains, rivers, lakes and humans.
The signature left by Byron gave me a sense of familiarity as if from another world, the distance between history and reality seems to have a peak, and life can gradually find its direction. When it was used as a prison to imprison people, the bleakness of not seeing the sun was also sharply present without courtesy.
In addition, the castle is educational and fun, allowing children and adults to immerse themselves in medieval life courses and performances in ancient buildings, which impressed me and I really liked. There are staff dressed in medieval style interacting with the children, creating a very harmonious and joyful atmosphere.

Chillon Castle, near Montreux, is Switzerland's most famous castle, built on the lake, facing the snow-capped mountains, very beautiful dreams. We arrived here by train, the sky was gloomy, and a few clouds of Jesus leaked through the thick clouds, just in line with the temperament of this medieval castle. Walk into the real medieval fairy tale.
The purpose of travel is not to enter the legend of the dream?

The Chillon Castle, the most representative millennium in Switzerland, was built on the rocky rocks of Lake Geneva, giving an illusion of floating on the lake. The most famous of these is the Bonivar prison. Before being converted into a prison in 1290, it used to be a warehouse for food and munitions. It was not until 1816 that the English poet Byron described the captives of this basement in his "Prisoners of the West".
Through a labyrinth of another castle room, and finally to the main tower of the castle. The main tower of the castle is located in the center of Xiyong and was built in the 11th century. It is a symbol of the refuge tower and power, and is used as a defensive observatory, temporary shelter, warehouse, and newcomers to be used as prisons and ammunition depots. For safety, the main gate of the main tower is built high and can only be reached by means of ladders or suspension bridges.

Located in the town of Veytaux near Montreux, Switzerland, Chillon Castle is a majestic medieval water castle. Built on the rocks on the shores of Lake Geneva, the Chillon Castle looks like it floats on the water. It is a bizarre pearl in the history of architecture. It is also one of the most prestigious monuments in Switzerland, a country famous for its natural scenery. One of the "Top Ten Ancient Fortresses in Europe".
Because history is too long, people can't accurately know the origin of the Chillon Castle. The earliest written record is found in 1150, when the Savoia family controlled the fortress and the trail along the lake. The base stone of the castle was built in the 11th century. In 1536, after the conquest of Wo Chau, the Bernians occupied the Chillon Castle. During the 260 years of its rule, the castle was used as a fortress, arsenal and prison. In 1798, after the outbreak of the Wozhou Revolution, the Bernians left Xiyong. Since 1803, the Wozhou people have become the masters of the castle.
It was late when I arrived, and the castle had just finished the day's visit and could not enter. It is said that this beautiful castle has attracted countless European celebrities, and also brought them a lot of creative inspiration, the most famous of which is the "Prisoner of Xiyong" by Byron.
Unable to visit the interior of the castle is very regrettable, but there are surprises in addition to frustration - the castle under the night does not always have a chance to see, under the curtain of dark blue, the yellow shadow of the castle is mysterious and solemn. Is there really a vampire inside? The answer remains to be unveiled

The current scene of the Chillon Castle is the result of continuous construction and renovation over the centuries. The period of construction dates back to the Bronze Age, and its restoration work has been in existence since the 19th century. As one of the top ten most beautiful castles in Europe, the Chillon Castle is definitely worth a visit. Not only can you feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages, but you can also stand on the top of the castle to see the most beautiful lakes in Switzerland and the stretches of the Alps. The charm of the Chillon Castle is not only the historic buildings it has, but also the nature surrounding the castle buildings. The snow-capped mountains and lakes blend into the building and look like an aerial castle floating on the sea.
The 46 exhibition halls in Chillon Castle have courtyards, wine cellars, warehouses, prisons, underground prayer rooms, defensive barriers, kitchens, bedrooms, guest rooms, reception rooms, chapels, toilets, prison rooms, and texts. In addition to these main buildings and rooms, there are many medieval artifacts, such as crickets, swords, muskets, long sticks, etc., in addition to these main buildings and rooms, the academy, the parliament building, the watchtower, the porch, the treasure house, and the main tower of the castle. .
