Feel the baptism of Buddhism
It takes courage to visit the Great Buddha Temple in July.
There is a shuttle bus from the entrance of the scenic area to the Buddha Heart Square, costing 5 yuan per trip (one way), about 1 kilometer away. Personally, I do not recommend taking the bus when entering.
Walking all the way in, the scenery is nice.
You can first climb the mountain to worship the Reclining Buddha statue, then go down from the other side of the Reclining Buddha mat, with small scenic spots all the way to the Buddha Heart Square. No need to retrace your steps.
Do not take the road behind the Release Pond to Banruo Temple. We took the wrong path and ended up on a remote mountain road, making a big detour. Follow the signs to Buddha Heart Square, and you will get there quickly. Banruo Temple is not to be missed; it is completely different from the style of ancient temples and offers another kind of scenery.

Xinchang Dafo Temple
The Great Buddha of Xinchang is located to the southwest of Xinchang county town, nestled between Nanming Mountain and Shicheng Mountain. Within a cave grotto on the Xianji Rock of Shicheng Mountain, there is a grandiose Daxiong Treasure Hall built outside the grotto. Outside the hall, the water flows gently; inside, the hall is shrouded in fragrant mist, forming the core area of the Great Buddha Temple. Regardless of the purpose of your visit to the golden body of the Great Buddha, and no matter whether you are fully mentally prepared or not, as soon as you step through the doors of the great hall, everyone will feel an invisible awe.

Driven by the slogan of Xinchang 'A Mount Tiantai, Half of the Complete Tang Poems', I visited the Dafo Temple
Welcomed by the promotional slogan of Xinchang 'A Mount Tiantai, Half of the Complete Tang Poems', Xinchang is an important node on the road of Tang poetry. Taking advantage of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, I drove for 1.5 hours from Ningbo to Xinchang.
The first stop was Dafo Temple. A heart inclined towards Buddhism.
Dafo Temple is built against the mountain, and the scenic area is very large, resembling a fully functional park because it is located in the bustling downtown of Xinchang County. There are ancient saw-cut rocks, the modern She Diao Village, and various other attractions, each with its own appeal. We went straight to Dafo Temple.
I have to complain a bit here. The ticket price of 80 yuan is a bit expensive. Perhaps there are not a few visitors like me who are only interested in Dafo Temple, and the lack of separate ticketing for major and minor attractions might be a point of criticism for many.
On that day, the sun was shining high, but it was not hot in the scenic area. The forests on both sides were not towering, but they provided shade from the sun. The huge 'Buddha' character carved on Mount Shicheng was somewhat shocking, hidden in the greenery, the long yellow walls on both sides, and the 'Blessing' character at the end of the bluestone road. Isn't this the blessing that everyone aspires to? Therefore, this place has also become a classic hotspot for photos in the temple.
If it were deep autumn, the fallen ginkgo leaves would be the icing on the cake.
The huge Maitreya Buddha stone statue sits facing forward in the center of the main hall. This large stone statue, carved into the cliff, took about 30 years to complete and is a representative work of early stone cave sculptures in the south of the Yangtze River. The statue of the Great Buddha is 2 meters tall, with a body height of 13.74 meters, a head height of 4.8 meters, ears 2.8 meters long, and a nose 1.48 meters long. It is known as 'the largest Buddha in the south of the Yangtze River' and is also called the Mogao Grottoes of the south. The stonemasons of the Eastern Jin Dynasty in China were really impressive.
The entire temple is quiet and serene, with ancient trees reaching the sky, thousand-foot cliffs, and green vines wrapping around the rocks. If you have time, you can sit for a day and space out. At noon, you can have a vegetarian meal.
When I came out, I didn't go to see the reclining Buddha because of knee pain. While resting below, I looked up the status of Xinchang Dafo Temple in the Buddhist Tiantai sect. Xinchang Dafo Temple and Taizhou Guoqing Temple are both important temples of the Buddhist Tiantai sect. Master Zhizhe, one of the ten famous monks in Chinese history, from the period of Emperor Wu of Liang, is the fourth patriarch and the actual founder of the Chinese Buddhist Tiantai sect, also known as Master Zhizhe, Master Tiantai, and Shakyamuni of the East. His memorial pagoda is built on the hillside between 'Shicheng Ancient Temple' and the Life Release Pond.
Because Japanese Buddhism originated from the Chinese Tiantai sect of the Tang Dynasty, Xinchang Dafo Temple has also become a frequent place of visit and worship for Japanese tourists.
The next stop is Yanbei Village.

The Great Buddha slowly said: Once there were four hundred and eighty temples in the Southern Dynasties
During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, the eminent monk Tan Guang traveled to the foot of Shicheng Mountain, where he found the environment serene and thus established the Hidden Peak Temple for his cultivation, marking the beginning of the Great Buddha Temple. At this time, it had been only 150 years since Buddhism was introduced to China, and the Southern and Northern Dynasties became the first climax of Buddhist development. Xinchang Great Buddha Temple witnessed the earliest Buddhist climate in the southern region.
More than a hundred years later, the monk Seng Hu arrived at Shicheng Mountain, saw the Buddha's light, and vowed to carve a ten-zhang (about 33 meters) stone Buddha out of the mountain. After three generations of eminent monks and more than 30 years, it was completed in the fifteenth year of the Tianjian era of the Southern Dynasties' Liang. After many changes, by the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Great Buddha was re-gilded and a five-story cave eave pavilion was built around it, and it was renamed the Great Buddha Temple. (Unfortunately, photography is not allowed)
Another ancient heritage site within the scenic area, the 'Thousand Buddha Zen Monastery', has 1075 Buddha statues carved into the rock wall, which were created earlier than the Great Buddha. These statues are very small in size, and most of them have become indistinct, but as early Buddhist statues and rare cave art in the southern region, they possess extremely high cultural value and are known as the 'Dunhuang of the Yue Kingdom'. The Great Buddha and the Thousand Buddha statues are collectively listed as national key cultural relics.
The Reclining Buddha Hall, built in 2007, is a contemporary cave temple carved into the cliff with seven bays of imitation wooden stone cave eaves, housing Asia's largest reclining Buddha, which exudes grandeur and compassion. It will also be a spectacular ancient site a hundred years from now.
Prajna Valley was originally a quarry pit left from the Ming Dynasty, which in recent years has been developed into a landscape combining waterfalls and Buddha statues, a very successful redevelopment project of low-value ancient sites. The cleverly designed route allows visitors to suddenly see the statues after passing through a narrow stone cave, bringing a sense of mystery and solemnity.
The stone archway at the entrance of the scenic area uses shuttle columns, one dou and three sheng (architectural measurements), swallowtail-shaped brackets, hip-and-gable roofs without uplifts, and large-radius chiwei (roof ornaments), imitating the architectural style from the Han to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, to reflect the era when the Great Buddha was carved.
The scenic area also features open-air Buddha head statues, Qiguang Jingyuan, petrified wood forests, and other landscapes worth exploring in detail.

You can also get stamps, in the cultural and creative store, for free, with a super number of stamps, so those who collect stamps should bring a notebook (or a lot of paper)
The itinerary for walking with children is: enter the scenic area in the morning, stroll until noon for a meal, leave the scenic area in the afternoon, and go to the hotel for a nap.

An underappreciated gem of a small town - Xinchang in Shaoxing
Xinchang is the birthplace of Chinese landscape poetry and painting, and it is also the essence of the Eastern Zhejiang Poetry Road of the Tang Dynasty, the Buddhist pilgrimage, and the origin of the tea ceremony.
Half of the Complete Collection of Tang Poems is from Xinchang.
It is verified that more than 450 poets lingered here and left over 1500 Tang poems, which also shows the charm of Xinchang's landscape.
Here's how to arrange a two-day, one-night trip:
D1: Xinchang Dafo Temple
D2: Xiayan Beicun Village - Chuan Yan Nineteen Peaks - Meizhu Ancient Village
About the attractions
Xinchang Dafo Temple: Known as the 'Dunhuang of Yue Country', it was founded during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. The temple is characterized by its stone grotto statues, with grand Buddha figures and a long history.
Xiayan Beicun Village: One of the most beautiful cloud-top villages in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, surrounded by mountains, with tea fields all over the mountains, and either a foggy morning or a sunset filled with rosy clouds, there are many hiking routes to meet different needs.
Chuan Yan Nineteen Peaks: A filming location for over 30 fantasy TV dramas, known as the 'Zhangjiajie of Eastern Zhejiang', and one of China's Danxia landform scenic areas. Climbing from the Flying Dragon Trail all the way to the mountain top, it's steep and rugged, and from the Flying Dragon Sky Bridge, you can overlook the entire Qianzhang Gorge.
Meizhu Ancient Village: The ancient village is not big, and it can be visited in an hour. A large number of ancient buildings from the Ming, Qing, and Republic of China periods are hidden among them, exuding an ancient charm, with traces of time and simple, long-standing stories everywhere.
There are quite a few hotels and homestays in Xinchang, choose according to your own needs.
About the food
Saying Xinchang is a kingdom of carbohydrates is not wrong at all. I love stir-fried rice cakes and tofu buns, and if time permits, you can also check out the carbohydrate street on Wozhou Road.

Xinchang, known as the 'Southeast Beauty', is also the essence of the 'Tang Poetry Road'
Xinchang, located in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province, was historically called Yandong and also known as Shicheng. The county was established in 908 AD, with a history of more than 1100 years. Xinchang boasts beautiful scenery and excellent ecology, with its beautiful mountains and waters earning it the reputation of 'Southeast Beauty', and it is also the essence of the 'Tang Poetry Road', 'Buddhist Journey', and 'Tea Origin'.
Xinchang is situated on the golden tourism line in eastern Zhejiang, with a wealth of tourism resources, offering nearly 300 scenic spots to visit. To the east, Xinchang connects with Fenghua Xikou to Putuo, to the south it leads to Tiantai to Yandang, to the west it neighbors Dongyang Hengdian to Jinhua, and to the north it links Shaoxing to Hangzhou, integrating into the economic circle within 3 hours to Shanghai, 2 hours to Hangzhou, and 1 hour to Ningbo.
When in Xinchang, the Dafo Temple is a must-visit. Hidden among the continuous Shicheng Mountains, the Dafo Temple scenic area is only separated from the Xinchang urban area by one mountain. The Dafo Temple within the scenic area is the only national key open temple in the Shaoxing area and is the birthplace of the sinicization of Buddhism, with a history of more than 1600 years. Inside the temple, there is a stone Maitreya Buddha statue, which took three generations of high monks to complete and is known as the 'Greatest Buddha in Southern China'. Along with the 'Thousand Buddha Zen Temple' in the scenic area, it is a national key cultural relic protection unit.
The Shijiufeng scenic area also has many landscapes, located 22 kilometers from the county town, mainly composed of the Shijiufeng, Dragon Valley, Chongyang Palace, and Silicified Wood National Geopark. Among them, Shijiufeng is a typical Danxia landform, with nineteen peaks stretching in a line along the river, majestic and beautiful, making it the preferred place for climbing and fitness; the Dragon Valley Feilong Walkway is built according to the mountain terrain, with a total length of 3200 meters, including a 128-meter glass suspension walkway, extending out to a glass viewing platform that is 4.5 meters long and 1.5 meters wide, making it the most distinctive sightseeing walkway in Zhejiang Province so far.
Additionally, the Tianzhu Fairy Scenic Area is located at the source of the Ten-mile Qianxi in Xinchang, a paradise for summer retreats, vacations, and mountain climbing; the Qipan Fairy Valley Scenic Area with its clear streams, waterfalls, and peculiar rocks, displays the harmonious charm of nature and is also worth a good visit.
In Xinchang, you can also check in at the China Tea Market Scenic Area and Dali Silk World Scenic Area for leisure and shopping.
Traveling in Xinchang, you can also taste many special snacks, such as Xinchang fried rice cakes, taro dumplings, wheat cakes, zhali noodles, huolatou, wheat flower soup, spring pancakes, steamed soup buns, etc., enjoying the delicious flavors. Therefore, traveling to Xinchang is also the beginning of a carbohydrate kingdom journey.

With a single thought of purity, lotuses bloom everywhere
a single thought of purity, lotuses bloom everywhere Xinchang, a treasure of a county town, not only boasts the sky-reaching peaks of Mount Tianmu, but also the Dafo Temple, known as the earliest southern grotto statues akin to Dunhuang in the Yue Kingdom. The temple's architecture is built according to the mountain's terrain, scattered and orderly, covering a large area. An afternoon passes by as you walk up and down the mountain, stopping here and there. It was here that the world's number one swordsman, Li Xiangyi, became the wandering physician Li Lianhua. It was also here that Zhang Wuji recalled the mnemonic of the Nine Yang True Classic: 'Let others be aggressive as they please, while the bright moon shines over the great river.' It seems that the tranquility here makes it easy to hear the voice within.

A one-day hiking trip in Xinchang, Shaoxing, where the scenery is beautiful but my legs are now wasted
🌈 Xinchang County, Shaoxing City, a 5A tourist city, is the birthplace of landscape poetry and painting in China. Tiantai Mountain, the Great Buddha Temple, and the Chuan Yan Nineteen Peaks are its three major attractions. As someone who is not good at climbing, I chose the 🟠Great Buddha Temple🟠 and Drum Mountain Park as my one-day trip destinations. As a result, I walked a total of 26,000 steps at the two attractions, which completely exhausted my legs 🙃 but it was worth the trip.
🏃Route‼️ Hangzhou East Station → 50 minutes to Shengzhou Xinchang High-speed Railway Station → Taxi to the Great Buddha Temple → Walk 600 meters to Drum Mountain Park → Walk 700 meters to Wozhou Road Food Street for dinner → Return trip

Xinchang Dafo Temple
Known as the largest Buddha in the south of the Yangtze River, it's not about the size, but rather that it's the earliest excavated Buddha, which dates back more than 1600 years to the Northern and Southern Dynasties. However, to worship the Buddha, you need to pay 20 yuan for what is called a 'fragrant flower coupon,' which is not an entrance ticket, haha, those who are willing but without money should not come in.

2️⃣Dafo Temple: This ancient temple is famous for its stone carvings, including the stone Maitreya Buddha carved into the mountain cliff, the reclining Buddha in the Shuanglin Grottoes, and the thousands of small Buddha statues in the Qianfo Zen Court, all of which are spectacular and breathtaking!
📌It's worth noting that Dafo Temple is also a sight to behold at night, transforming into a place of flowing lights and colors.
3️⃣Nan Street: The most worthwhile food street to visit in Xinchang, gathering many time-honored shops, and can be called a paradise for carbohydrate lovers!

The underestimated Xinchang, it really deserves to be promoted
Dafo Temple is a scenic spot in the center of Xinchang County, so the transportation, food, and accommodation are very convenient☺️You can go to eat various snacks as soon as you go down the mountain☺️The Carbohydrate Kingdom is not in vain! Spring rolls/Taro dumplings/Steamed soup dumplings (actually steamed small wontons)/Rice cakes/Pressed noodles and so on
The Dafo Temple scenic area is really big❗
I visited it in detail, basically all the attractions have been turned around, and the mountain trail has also been walked, up and down the mountain (the high-position scenery of each mountain top is beautiful☺️
An average of 2w steps per person, strolled for 5 hours, took hundreds of photos, and couldn't choose at all🤦🏻♀️
Coming in autumn should be a beautiful scenic spot, the deep autumn yellow and red leaves and green trees mixed together must be beautiful🙋🏻♀️
I came in mid-December, many leaves have fallen off, and it will be relatively inferior. But the scenery in the scenic area is still very diverse, temples/various towers, pavilions, buildings, courtyards, pavilions, halls/release ponds/lakes/stone walls/tunnels/mountain top scenery/children's dinosaur play area
It is also the filming location of the TV series Zhou Sheng Ru Gu/Lianhua Building, get√ actor's same machine position
