On a Saturday morning in October, we visited Shenzhen Dongshan Temple.
The morning sunlight filtered through the treetops, casting a mysterious glow on the ancient buildings of Shenzhen Dongshan Temple. This serene temple is an ideal place for meditation. My family and I came here on a Saturday in October to pay our respects and explore.
As soon as we entered the temple, the solemn and compassionate Buddha statues inspired awe. Visitors quietly admired the exquisite carvings and murals, feeling the weight of history.
In the courtyard of Dongshan Temple, we strolled along the stone paths, surrounded by lush greenery, birdsong, and the fragrance of flowers, which uplifted our spirits. The environment here is perfect for sitting in meditation, allowing one to temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy a moment of tranquility.
After a morning of exploration, our minds were cleansed, and our bodies relaxed.

"Temple on the sea, sea in the temple"
⛩ Dongshan Temple Dongshan Temple
A century-old ancient temple with a history of more than 600 years, built during the Ming Dynasty, rebuilt three times, still retains the aesthetics of Lingnan architecture, where you can experience the charm of Chinese architecture.
Its "back to the mountain and facing the sea" geographical location makes it more secluded and elegant. Walking here, you will unconsciously slow down your pace, because you don't want to break this tranquility, only occasionally hear the chanting from the hall.
In addition, Dongshan Temple also offers free Buddhist studies consultation and public psychological consultation.

Dongshan Temple, a seaside temple located in Dapeng, Shenzhen, is no less impressive than the grand Hōngfǎ Temple
Situated on the eastern side of Shenzhen, there has been a temple with over 600 years of history since the Ming Dynasty, known as Dongshan Temple. Nestled against the mountain and facing the sea, it is relatively serene and less frequented by tourists, yet there is a constant stream of people coming to offer incense. The temple also retains the design and aesthetic of Chinese (Lingnan) architecture.
The temple is not large; it can be toured in about 10 minutes.
If you are visiting Dapeng Ancient City and only have one day, you might choose to stop by for a visit.

A 2-day, 1-night travel guide to Dapeng, Shenzhen, featuring sea, mountains, temples, and an ancient city
Recently, I wanted to experience the feeling of going to a windy place, so I went to the place in Shenzhen that feels most like a windy destination – Dapeng Fortress 🏯 If you also want to relax by the seaside where the breeze blows, consider this 2-day, 1-night travel guide, which will fulfill all your fantasies of an ancient city + seaside vacation! The itinerary is as follows: 💼
𝐃𝐀𝐘𝟏: Homestay — Experience the windy Dapeng Ancient City — Jiaochangwei beachside fun 🌟
𝐃𝐀𝐘𝟐: Watch the sunrise at Jiaochangwei🌅 — Overlook the ancient city and sea from Dongshan Temple — Sunset at Nanao's No.1 Beach🌇 — Return trip 🚗
🏯 Dapeng Fortress: Shenzhen's Dali Ancient City 🏰
The ancient city, with a history of over 600 years, gives you the feeling of being in a windy place. There are many great spots for eating, playing, and taking photos📸. I especially love the second floor of the city gate, where you can overlook the ancient city, and I also enjoy aimlessly wandering the quaint streets. It's delightful to stroll, eat, take photos, and be amazed! 🚶♀🌆
🌊 Jiaochangwei: Shenzhen's Little Gulangyu 🏖
(500 meters from the ancient city across a road) Jiaochangwei – the beach most familiar to Shenzhen locals and the top choice for corporate team-building. There are various styles of homestays that are stunning, and during the day, you can sit by the sea and drink coffee🍵, swim🏊, ride a motorboat⛵, or go parasailing🪂. At night, you can visit a pub or have a barbecue🍢. It's probably the most well-equipped seaside town in Shenzhen for food, drink, and fun! 🌅
⛩ Dongshan Temple
(500 meters from the ancient city) A temple built during the Ming Dynasty, featuring grand and majestic Chinese architectural style. Nestled against the mountain and facing the water, it's very peaceful and serene. ⛰
⛰ The mountain behind Dongshan Temple
Due to the temple's grand scale and the desire to overlook it, I walked up the mountain behind the temple. It's an easy 20-minute walk to the top (very relaxing), but the lush trees block the view of the temple😅. There are two stone spots at the top that perfectly overlook Jiaochangwei and the ancient city🥰. 🏞
🏨 Shenzhen Lanhuating·Fanlu Seaside Hotel
(200 meters from Dongshan Temple) The homestay I stayed at is the Chinese-style Lanhuating·Fanlu Seaside Hotel. The quaint rooms come with private courtyards, and all rooms are on the ground floor, while the second floor is a large sky pavilion with a garden surrounded by greenery. You can also see the Dongshan mountain scenery, offering a view of the clouds rolling by, which is very relaxing for the body and mind. 🏰🌳
🏖 Nanao's No.1 Beach
(About half an hour's drive from the ancient city) A row of colorful houses🏨, a vacation spot with a small Babylonian vibe🕌, free to take photos, plus soft beige sand and azure sea🌊. The highlight is the stunning sunset here🌇! 🌅

Dongshan Temple — A renowned Lingnan temple that carries on the 'Dongshan School' of Chinese Zen Buddhism
Located in the southern foothills of Longtoushi Mountain, Dongshan Temple of Dapeng, Shenzhen, is situated on the eastern side of Pengcheng Village, Dapeng Town Street Office, Dapeng New District, Shenzhen. Overlooking Daya Bay and nestled between mountains and sea, the temple boasts an exceptionally serene and beautiful landscape, covering an area of 4,000 square meters.
It takes only a few minutes to walk to Dongshan Temple from the south gate of the ancient city of Dapeng (approximately over three hundred meters away). Dongshan Temple is a renowned Lingnan temple that carries on the 'Dongshan School' of Chinese Zen Buddhism. It has always been a bustling place of worship and the spiritual center for local residents, as well as a hub of culture.
Dongshan Temple has undergone three major renovations. The first renovation took place in the spring of the fourth year of the Xianfeng era of the Qing Dynasty (1854). In 1993, local residents, compatriots from Hong Kong and Macau, and overseas Chinese spontaneously donated more than one million yuan for the second renovation of Dongshan Temple. The third reconstruction was carried out in 2009. After completion, the temple was divided into four sections, with the main axis consisting of the Mountain Gate, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, and the Sutra Repository Tower. On both sides are the Garan Hall, Patriarch Hall, Merit Hall, and Longevity Hall, complemented by the Bell Tower, Drum Tower, Monks' Quarters, Guest Rooms, Guest Hall, Dining Hall, Meditation Hall, and Sixth Patriarch Lecture Hall.
Main attractions:
① Mountain Gate: The Mountain Gate is located beside Pengfei Road in front of the temple, facing south with its back to the north, overlooking Dapeng Bay. The gate is a four-pillar, three-bay gatehouse-style structure made of granite, with a total width of 21.80 meters and a height of 16 meters, exuding a majestic aura. The central bay features three arched doors, with square stone pillars and carved eaves with hooks and drips. The front horizontal plaque reading 'Dongshan Temple' was inscribed by Master Chuanzheng, with couplets on both sides saying: 'East of the city, west of the residence, walk straight with a calm heart, a thousand volumes in one tower are treasures; the mountain's mood and water's color, the true scripture of self-nature, a spoonful tastes of the four seas.'
② Hall of Heavenly Kings: The Hall of Heavenly Kings is built in the style of ancient Ming and Qing architecture. The couplets in front of the hall read: 'Fruit comes from cause, cause leads to fruit, having fruit means having cause, what cause you plant, such fruit you'll reap; the mind is Buddha, Buddha is the mind, to seek Buddha, first seek the mind.' The couplets inside the hall read: 'Day by day carrying an empty bag, little rice, no money, yet remains a big belly and wide intestines, not knowing the faith of the many devotees, with what shall they offer sustenance; year by year sitting at the cold mountain gate, waiting for Zhang and Li, always seeing them joyous and delighted, please tell, what is the reason for this monk's contentment?' The four great Heavenly Kings on both sides maintain the sculptural art style of the Ming and Qing dynasties, with spirited and valiant appearances. Behind the Maitreya statue is the Dharma-protecting Bodhisattva Skanda.
③ Mahavira Hall: The main hall has five bays and a double-eaved pure wooden structure, entirely made of Burmese imported padauk wood, using pure wooden mortise and tenon joints. The roof is covered with Yixing purple clay tiles from Jiangsu, and the green bricks on the walls were specially ordered from Ganzhou, Jiangxi. The hall hangs a couplet written by Master Chuanzheng: 'The water and sky blend as one, in the depths of the tidal sound lies a profound mystery, what is your true face, the Dharma is vast, the bell tolls far and wide, without past or present, realize and forget oneself, the wondrous awakened heart.' Inside the hall, the Three Tathagatas are enshrined (in the center is Sakyamuni Tathagata, to the left is the Medicine Buddha of the Eastern Pure Lapis Lazuli Light, and to the right is Amitabha Buddha of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss). On the sides of the hall, five hundred clay arhats, modeled after those in Nanhua Zen Temple in Shaoguan, are made of Chaozhou pottery clay and crafted by hand.

likes to travel to temples
If you only know about Shenzhen's
Dahuaxing Temple, Hongfa Temple
This small temple hidden in Dapeng, Dongshan Temple
I recommend you must go
🌳Recommendation reason
✔️Dongshan Temple was built in the 27th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty. The feng shui master Lai Buyi traveled to Dapeng Bay and passed by Dongshan Longtou Stone Mountain. He found that there was a purple glow here, which is a sign of auspiciousness. He told the local villagers that this is a blessed place. Building a temple here can ensure peace in the area, so Dongshan Temple was built.
✔️Dongshan Temple has a history of more than 600 years.
It has undergone three renovations in history.
The first renovation was in the Xianfeng year of the Qing Dynasty.
The second time was in 1993, when local people and compatriots in Hong Kong and Macao, as well as overseas Chinese, spontaneously donated more than one million yuan for the second renovation of Dongshan Temple.
In 2009, the third renovation was carried out.
✔️There is a small pavilion at the entrance of Dongshan Temple where you can ask for incense.
✔️Here you can't hear the noise of the crowd, it's incredibly quiet, you can only hear the chanting of the scriptures brought by the breeze, it's really healing.
✔️The architecture inside is in the style of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Every brick and tile, wall color surface, and relief auspicious beasts are very exquisite. The beauty of Chinese architecture is fully displayed, and it's really beautiful to take pictures.
✔️It takes about 1 hour to visit.
✔️When you come out of Dongshan Temple, you can walk to Dapeng Suocheng in about ten minutes to the right. There is no need to go there specially, you can stop by.
✔️Across from the ancient city is the seaside of Jiaochangwei, about a 10-minute walk away. Going to the seaside to see the sea is really healing.
🌳Visiting tips:
✔️Don't wear a tank top or short skirt/shorts.
✔️When visiting, be careful not to step on the threshold.
✔️Try not to bring very small babies into the temple. If you can avoid it, don't bring them. The father saw that it was a temple at the door, and decisively took the baby out.
✔️There are two reasons:
❶The expressions of the statues in the temple are not always friendly, and children will be scared and may cry when they come back at night.
❷Children are too young and it's hard to control them in the temple. Some will run around and wander, step on the threshold, or shout loudly in the main hall, which is very disturbing to others. So my suggestion is, if possible, it's best not to bring children in.
✔️Be reverent and try not to take pictures of Buddha statues. I usually put away my phone when I enter the temple and be devout.

Dongshan Temple is much less well-known than Hongfa Temple, with fewer visitors, making it a quiet and peaceful place. It's a perfect place to calm down and pray, enjoy a moment of tranquility, and appreciate the exquisite and beautiful Chinese architecture in the temple.
Built against the mountain and surrounded by green trees, the environment is quiet and the scenery is beautiful. Here, you can't hear the noise of the outside world, only the sound of the mountain wind rustling the leaves, the chirping of insects, and the chanting of Buddhist scholars.
The clear water stone exterior wall, yellow glazed tiles, and richly colored elements combine to form a grand and atmospheric style; various exquisite reliefs and auspicious beasts on the eaves are characteristic of Lingnan traditional architecture; there are also 180 Fujian colored paintings embedded in the temple walls, each mural is very exquisite and elegant, making people exclaim in admiration.
