Dege | No lights, but always producing light
The all-wood structure of the Dege Printing House was built in 1729 and has never been electrified. Natural light is the only source of illumination, creating beautiful shadows. Every year, scriptures are carved and printed from early spring to late autumn, for about half a year.
📍Address: No. 13, Bagong Street, Dege County, Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province
🕙Opening hours: 8:30–11:30; 14:00–17:30
🎟️Tickets: CNY 50 (free for residents of cities that have provided aid, with ID)
🌟Highlights: 290,000 blocks of Tibetan scripture printing plates, some of which are the only ones in existence
From the morning, the Dege Printing House is "busy," with a constant stream of people walking around it. Some walk alone, some with their families, and some, like us, walk without knowing why. It wasn't until we were about to leave that I asked a staff member and learned that walking around the printing house 1,111 times is considered a good deed.
The craftsmen work diligently at their posts. The first floor is where the printing plates are washed, and the second floor is where they are stored. Light streams into the narrow corridor, illuminating the rows of tall cabinets filled with printing plates. It is said that there are 290,000 blocks of Tibetan scripture printing plates here, some of which are the only ones in existence. Up the narrow, almost vertical wooden stairs is an open area around the courtyard, the best-lit area in the printing house, where craftsmen carve and print scriptures.
There are no lights here, but light is always being produced.

|Trip to Western Sichuan: Dege Printing House Travel Guide
Dege, as a fortress of Sichuan, Tibet, and Qinghai provinces, and as the center of Kham culture and the birthplace of Southern Tibetan medicine, has many niche treasures worth visiting multiple times. But this time, we came specifically for the Dege Printing House, 😊. During my trip to Tibet in 2003, I learned about this place from the travel book 'Tibetan Antelope'. This time, I was able to visit and observe the entire printing process, and it was truly worth the trip 👍.
👍️Recommendation: Dege Printing House is the largest Tibetan cultural printing house in China and one of the top three printing houses in the world. Dege Printing House not only prints scriptures of its own sect but also prints scriptures of various sects. Therefore, the scriptures you see in many places may originate from here, an encyclopedia of Tibetan culture 👍. Dege Printing House is also a Tibetan scripture library, where you can see the earliest original molds. The feeling of touching them with your hands, the sense of age they bring, is so wonderful!
📅Travel Guide: Ticket 🎫 50/person. It is recommended to follow their printing steps for the tour. It takes about 1.5 hours.
🏨Accommodation Guide: You can choose to stay in Dege according to your itinerary or drive to Manigango County.
💗Other tips: The printing house starts at 2 PM in the afternoon. After understanding this, you can arrange your subsequent itinerary accordingly. We drove to Yulong Lhatso near Manigango, but it was too late. The entrance fee to the scenic area is 30 yuan, but it was already dark when we arrived, so we didn't get to explore much.

Self-driving tour of Sichuan Qingxiaohuan Line (Fifteen) Dege Sutra Printing House
Dege Sutra Printing House, established in 1729, is located on Culture Street in Dege County Town, and is known as the 'Encyclopedia of Tibetan Culture', 'The brilliant cultural pearl of the Tibetan region', and 'The treasure house under the snow mountain'. The printing house has a unique structure, with high red walls, swaying green trees, and it is quiet and spectacular. The courtyard is divided into Tibetan version library, paper library, sutra drying tower, plate washing platform, paper cutting and bookbinding room, as well as Buddha hall, sutra hall, etc. Here, there is a nearly 300-year-old woodblock printing skill, which is permeated and moisturized by the baptism of time, revealing the strong and heavy cultural heritage. The brick walls and black tiles here, the towering ancient trees, the shrubs and beautiful grasses are so calm and orderly, simple and heavy, quiet and mysterious. Every morning when the first ray of sunlight falls, the local people will come here, turning the scriptures clockwise around the printing house, endlessly.

Dege Printing House, one of the three major printing houses, is also the best preserved. It was built in Qingyizheng, and has a history of nearly 300 years. It has collected 70% of Tibetan culture and hundreds of thousands of scriptures. Like the sea. Today, the ancient rubbing, ink making, and papermaking techniques are still used here to print the scriptures.
