This is the best place to see the sea of clouds
Jiaozi Mountain and Xishan have completely different temperaments. If Xishan is like an elderly historian you can have a heart-to-heart talk with, then Jiaozi Mountain is a mountain god with a distinct personality, dressing differently in each season. It stands over 4,200 meters tall and is known as the "Number One Mountain in Central Yunnan." Experiencing sunshine, rain, snow, and traversing all four seasons in one day is common here. To truly appreciate its beauty, you first need to understand its seasonal moods.
🗺️ 1. Get an overall impression first
Before you go, quickly learn about its core features and activities:
· Core features: The closest seasonal snow mountain to Kunming, "one mountain with four seasons, different weather every ten miles," rich in biodiversity.
· Key seasonal landscapes:
· Spring (April to June): Sea of alpine rhododendrons.
· Summer (July to August): Waterfall clusters, sea of clouds, summer retreat.
· Autumn (late October): Colorful forests, red maples.
· Winter (November to March): Ice and snow, rime, ice waterfalls.
· Cultural core: One of the birthplaces of Yi culture, home to multiple ethnic groups, rich in festivals and events.
· Suitable for: Nature lovers, hikers, photography enthusiasts, and those interested in ethnic culture.
📸 2. Photography: Here, time has "four seasons"
When photographing Jiaozi Mountain, your success largely depends on coming in the right season and catching the right weather.
Spring (mid-April to June): Enter the three-dimensional sea of flowers
· Where to shoot: Jingguaitang is recognized as the core area of the rhododendron sea. But don’t just focus here; from 2,600 to 3,900 meters elevation, different rhododendron species bloom in succession, creating a "three-dimensional sea of flowers." By Tianchi Lake, before 9 a.m. on windless mornings, you can capture perfect reflections of snow-capped mountains and flower shadows, like a mirror in the sky.
· How to shoot: Try to find foreground elements, such as partially covering the lens with a cluster of rhododendrons to create depth. Solid-colored clothing is recommended to stand out against the colorful flower sea.
Summer (July to August): Capture the vitality of water and the grandeur of clouds
· Where to shoot: The waterfall clusters from Xiapingzi to Daheiqing are the absolute stars. Besides the well-known ones, there are many unnamed "waterfall surprise boxes." Zhuanlong Sea View Platform is an excellent spot to watch the sea of clouds, especially on clear mornings after rain.
· How to shoot: Use slow shutter speeds to capture silky water flow for waterfalls. On sunny afternoons, watch for rainbows in the mist. For the sea of clouds, wait for the wind to add motion to the drifting clouds.
Autumn (mid to late October): Encounter a richly colored oil painting
· Where to shoot: The area around Moon Rock has the densest colorful forests. From the summit of Jiaozi, you can photograph fiery red leaves below and distant white snow peaks in one frame, creating a strong color impact.
· How to shoot: Shooting with the light behind you will make autumn leaf colors more saturated. Pick up a fallen leaf as a foreground element to add interest. A red scarf or cape will be a perfect accent in the autumn colors.
Winter (November to March): Immerse yourself in an ice and snow fairy tale
· Where to shoot: Ice waterfalls, rime, snowfields. Trees along the plank road are covered with icicles, looking like ink paintings from any angle.
· How to shoot: Look for lines—frost-covered branches, winding snowy paths. Wearing bright clothes will stand out in the pure white world. Remember to keep warm; the cold drains camera batteries quickly.
🧳 3. Practical tips: Handling the "little moods" of the plateau
Jiaozi Mountain is beautiful, but the plateau’s "moods" require careful preparation.
· Transportation: Driving yourself is the most convenient option. From Kunming, take the Jiaozi Mountain tourist route, about a 3-hour drive. All private cars must park at Xinshanya Pass parking lot, then transfer to the shuttle bus and cable car to go up the mountain. You can also take the direct shuttle bus from Kunming’s Tuodong Gymnasium.
· Tickets and hours: The park is open roughly from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last entry at 3:00 p.m.). Shuttle buses and cable cars are mandatory purchases; it’s recommended to buy combo tickets including transportation online in advance. The last shuttle down usually leaves around 5:30 p.m.
· Altitude sickness and clothing: The summit is over 4,000 meters high, so move slowly. Carry glucose and chocolate. Dress in layers: moisture-wicking base layer, warm middle layer, windproof and waterproof outer layer. Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and non-slip hiking shoes are the four essentials.
· Ecology and safety: This is a national nature reserve. Please stay on the boardwalk, do not trample meadows or pick flowers. Waterfall areas are slippery in summer; plank roads may be icy in winter—watch your step.
Finally, my advice: Don’t try to see all the scenery at once. Pick the season that attracts you most, set aside at least a full day, and take your time to feel it. It’s magnificent on sunny days, magical in the fog, and even a light rain with drifting mountain clouds can surprise you.
