Four dishes and one soup
5A South Jing Tu Lou Scenic Area is a very historical scenic area, where you can fully understand the culture and life of the Hakka people. They unite to resist foreign enemies, they are hardworking and enduring, and they have built their own magical round houses and live here. The four round houses surrounding a square house are called 'four dishes and one soup' by people.

Fujian Tulou, this article is enough! When you come to Fujian, don't just go to Xiamen and Xiapu, you must come to see the Tulou
The prototype of the place where Chun lives in the film 'Big Fish & Begonia' comes from the Fujian Tulou - Chengqi Lou, the king of buildings.
Many people who come to Tulou for the first time will hesitate whether to go to Nanjing Tulou or Yongding Tulou. Considering the convenience of transportation and the diversity of Tulou types, it is recommended to choose Nanjing Tulou, because you can go to Yunshuiyao for a leisurely walk, see the Big Fish & Begonia version of Tulou, and see the 'Four Dishes and One Soup' often seen in Tulou promotional films.
Fujian Tulou is mostly built by Hakka people, so it is also called Hakka Tulou. Because most of the Hakka people migrated from the Central Plains, they were deeply influenced by the culture of the Central Plains. During the migration process, in order to survive, they had to face various life hardships, so they built houses according to the Bagua. A Tulou is the center of a family's cohesion. The special nature of Hakka Tulou's collective living reflects the strong family ethics of the Hakka people.
Route: Xiamen-Yunshuiyao Ancient Town-Taxia Village (accommodation)-Yuchang Lou-Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster-Zhangzhou or Xiamen
Transportation: Prefer self-driving, public transportation is not very convenient
Precautions: If you want to go upstairs, you need to pay the local villagers 5-20 yuan, depending on the off-peak season and the number of people you travel with, after all, it is indeed their current accommodation.
First stop: Yunshuiyao was built in the Yuan Dynasty, with a 10-kilometer-long ancient road paved with cobblestones. Many TV shows and movies have been filmed here. Walking around Yunshuiyao, you can see many different types of Tulou clusters, including Hegui Lou, Huaiyuan Lou and other Tulous. Hegui Lou is the tallest square building among all Fujian Tulous (many are round). But what is truly amazing is that the entire building is actually built on a 3000 square meter swamp, with only more than 200 pine piles and pads underneath, and Hegui Lou has stood on this huge floating bed for more than 200 years, amazing!
Accommodation: There are many homestays in Taxia Village, you can choose at will, the village is very comfortable, there are many places to eat, you can eat Zhangzhou specialty dishes at will. It's just that sometimes when there are too many cars, the road is narrow and it's not easy to drive.
Second stop: Yuchang Lou, Nanjing Yuchang Lou is a very old and largest round Tulou, built in 1368, at the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. I posted a video before, it's very spectacular. The pillars are leaning east and west, with a maximum inclination of 15 degrees, it looks shaky, but it has stood up after countless earthquakes!
Third stop: Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, Tianluokeng is an excellent place to appreciate the local natural environment. Because its appearance is four round buildings surrounding a square building, it is also jokingly called 'Four Dishes and One Soup' by people. The five Tulous are said to represent gold, wood, water, fire, and earth. You can enjoy the view from the viewing platform, or you can go down the mountain from the viewing platform to the inside of the Tulou one by one

Tulou, the heart of Fuijian
Tulou Fujian. Exceptional traditional building and a very special type of communal living. People living their harmonious relationship with their environment and relatives. Built in 18th century and designed with an inward-looking, circular or square floor design. They were built for defense purposes around a central open courtyard with only one entrance and windows to the outside only above the first floor. Amazing history indeed.
Deep within the enchanting landscapes of Fujian, China, lies a hidden gem that beckons the intrepid traveler to embark on an extraordinary expedition. Prepare to be transported to a world where time stands still, where ancient traditions intertwine with breathtaking architecture, and where adventure awaits at every turn. Welcome to the Tulou, a place that defies all expectations and promises a voyage of a lifetime.
As you venture into the heart of Fujian, the anticipation builds, fueling your spirit of adventure. The Tulou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a cluster of earthen buildings that have stood for centuries, each one a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the Hakka people who call this place home.

Chinese countryside life
Fujian tulou are traditional circular communal dwellings in China's Fujian province. These UNESCO World Heritage sites offer a glimpse into the unique lifestyle of the Hakka people. Primarily built between the 15th and 20th centuries, tulou served as fortified homes, providing safety and fostering community bonds. They often house multiple families and include features like a central courtyard, living quarters, and storage areas. While tourism has increased, some tulou continue to be inhabited, blending tradition with modern influences.

Not alien spaceships, they are FUJIAN TULOU!
2-3 hours drive out of Xiamen, these Hakka people wonders are a must see when you are in Fujian province. There are many sets/clusters of tulou, we visited Tianloukeng, Xiaban, Taxia, Hekeng and stayed in one in Hongkeng village!! What an amazing experience. You can catch buses or train from Xiamen out towards the tulou but then you need a car to get around them - our inn host arranged a car and driver for us for the entire trip out of Xiamen which was stress free and perfect. Your should definitely spend a night up there as well and try the local cuisine.

Fujian Tulou- UNESCO World Heritage site
The Fujian Tulou is a Unesco World Heritage site. A Tulou is a type of dwelling built in the mountains of southern Fujian. A Tulou is a large round, enclosed structure that is usually circular or rectangular in shape and is used to house multiple families. They are usually between 2 to 5 storeys high and the largest Tulou can hold up to a hundred families. Every family in the Tulou community enjoys perfect equality because every room in a Tulou is the same size and has exactly the same design. You can get to Fujian Tulou by car, train or bus. We hired a driver for the day so it was very convenient to travel between the different Tulous. This is a very unique experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Getting 'round Fujian
Tulou (土楼) are massive round or square earthen buildings constructed by Hakka people throughout south China, particularly in inland Fujian. Built for residential and defensive purposes, they were home to one or more clans comprising several families, with individual apartments facing inwards to a common courtyard. Some are still inhabited nowadays while others are in poor condition, but they're now one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area and well worth visiting.
Getting There - The tulou are scattered throughout the countryside, so it's difficult to visit them without a car. We took the train from Xiamen to Nanjing (南靖 — not to be confused with the former capital Nanjing 南京) where we found many drivers. We negotiated a route and price with one driver, who took us first to a guesthouse (not included in the price) and then on an excellent one day tour of several Hakka villages. This was probably the most flexible way to see the area without our own car and the price was reasonable.
Note that it's also necessary to buy a ticket to the tulou area; the funds raised by these passes supposedly go towards preservation of the ancient buildings.
Attractions - As well as the tulou, there are ancient temples and high terraced fields, making this a great place for photography.
Hotels - There are many guesthouses and small hotels in the area, including some inside tulou themselves. We stayed in the hotel recommended by our driver, which was clean and comfortable and run by a very friendly local couple.
Food & Restaurants - Many guesthouses offer food and there are many other restaurants catering for the crowds of tourists who visit this area.
Shopping - Inside the tulou many families have opened small shops selling tea and other local produce, handicrafts and knick-knacks. Many of the tea shops offer a chance to taste several different kinds of Fujianese tea (our driver took us to a couple of places for tasting.)

If you have been to the Tulou, you must know that
The outdoor circle on the first floor of the Tulou Scenic Area is full of various souvenirs and stalls selling snacks
so you can see from this photo. There is really no tourist here. I was very excited to see the Tulou for the first time.

Compared with Xiamen, Ganzhou is not a hot tourist destination. But when it comes to earth buildings, it is familiar. Fujian's classic earth buildings are mainly distributed in Yongding County of Longyan City and Nanjing County of Cangzhou City. The famous earth buildings in Yongding County are concentrated in Hukeng Town and Xiayang Town. The famous earth buildings in Nanjing County are concentrated in Shuyang Town and Meilin Town.
Nanjing County, the ancient name of Lanshui County, brings together the oldest, most beautiful, highest, largest, smallest and most unique earth buildings in the country. The Tulou Scenic Area is distributed in a circular shape with a diameter of 10Km. The most famous ones are Tianluokeng Tulou Group, Dongpu West Lean Yuchang Building, Hekeng Tulou Building, Huaiyuan Building, Hegui Building and Taxia Village. The name of the Tianluokeng Tulou Group originated in the 1960s. The satellite photos taken in the United States mistaken the five earthen buildings in Tianluokeng as China's nuclear reactors, causing the international community to be at a loss. In addition to the role of nuclear reactors and the World Heritage List, today's fame is also known as the "four dishes and one soup."

Fujian Tulou: A Home of Protection and Reunion
Fujian Tulou is a unique type of residential building in China, known for its distinctive structure and rich cultural connotations. These tulous are not just places to live but also carriers of history and culture, reflecting the Hakka people's dedication to protecting their homes and their longing for family reunions.
Tulou buildings are typically circular or square, with thick outer walls made of rammed earth or brick, forming a solid defensive system. The walls can be several meters thick, designed with strong defensive capabilities to fend off external threats. Inside, the tulou functions as an independent community with multiple residential units for families to live and thrive. Each tulou usually has several stories, with a spacious courtyard in the center that provides good ventilation and lighting, and serves as a gathering place for family events.

Built by the Hakka and Minnan people centuries ago, each Tulou served as a fortified communal residence designed for defense and family life. Entering the Yunshuiyao Scenic Area, it was like being in a beautiful picture scroll. The Tulou here are scattered and elegant, making people feel like they have traveled to ancient times. Walking along the stream, the ancient trees on both sides are towering, the birds are singing and the flowers are fragrant, which is refreshing!

Depart from Xiamen - 1.5 hours to Yongding to see the King of Tulou and Yunshuiyao.
A great place for summer vacation photos with kids:
One day is enough around Xiamen! The Nanjing Tulou in Zhangzhou is the filming location of 'Big Fish & Begonia', so I decided to visit the Tulou!
—————————————————————————————
🚗 About Transportation:
After much consideration, we decided to rent a car from Xiamen, which takes one and a half hours to reach (you can also take the high-speed train to Nanjing Station, then take the No. 6 bus for two hours 🚌, arriving at Yunshuiyao, but it takes an hour by taxi, so driving or renting a car is the most time-saving and least tiring option 🦶🏻).
📸 Photo and Play Guide:
The Tulou attractions are divided into two parts, Yongding Tulou and Yunshuiyao:
1️⃣ King of Tulou: 🍲 'Chengqi Lou' (Pics 6️⃣7️⃣8️⃣) → Qiaofu Lou (Shize Lou, Fangyuan Yixiantian, Wuyun Lou) → (many Hakka restaurants where you can eat, with specialty dishes)
2️⃣ Yunshuiyao: Huaiyuan Lou (the prototype of 'Big Fish & Begonia') → Yunshuiyao Ancient Town (with ancient locust trees and waterwheels) → Hegui Lou (a Tulou built in a swamp)
👪 A great place for family trips, taking kids, and photography:
Yongding Tulou, Nanjing Tulou, whether you want to enjoy the beautiful scenery, taste authentic food, or take great photos, it can meet all your needs!

How to Choose Fujian Tulou? (Complete Guide Included)
Fujian Tulou counts more than 10,000 buildings, and before I went there, I was a bit confused about how to choose and how to get there, plus there are so many names of Tulou, and I always felt something was missing from the posts online, so I organized my thoughts after coming back for your reference:
🏠Introduction to Tulou
1⃣️History: The people from the Central Plains built Tulou in the south to avoid wars.
2⃣️Shape: Tulou are not only round, they can be categorized into round, square, and Wufeng buildings (symmetrical left and right, lower in the front and higher in the back, with roofs shaped like flying birds, hence the name Wufeng).
3⃣️Structure: There are corridor-style enclosed buildings and unit-style enclosed buildings. Most of the key Tulou scenic areas we visit are corridor-style, meaning the middle parts are interconnected, while unit-style are not.
4⃣️Function: Vertically, each building houses one family, with the kitchen on the first floor, granary on the second, and living quarters above the third floor. The first and second floors have no windows to prevent thieves and wild animals from climbing in.
🎑Classification of Tulou
Mainly divided into Nanjing, Yongding, and Hua'an, with most concentrated in the first two.
- Nanjing: Yunshuiyao, Tianluokeng, Hekeng
- Yongding: Gaobei, Hongkeng, Chuxi, Nanxi
- Hua'an: Dadi
(Specific key Tulou features, ticket prices, and routes are detailed in the image)
❓How to Choose Tulou
Generally, you visit 2 scenic areas in one day, and most people don't care about the details. I suggest choosing one from the commercial scenic areas, as they are quite similar.
- More commercial: Yunshuiyao, Tianluokeng, Gaobei, Hongkeng
- More homestays: Yunshuiyao, Tianluokeng
- Public transportation available: Yunshuiyao, Tianluokeng, Yongding Tulou King
- Good for photography, fewer people: Chuxi
The following are personal opinions, not guidance:
- Classic route lovers: Tianluokeng + Gaobei (Tulou King)
- Unique feature lovers: Tianluokeng + Hongkeng (Tulou Prince)
- Water enthusiasts: Yunshuiyao
- Photography and quietness lovers: Tianluokeng + Chuxi
- Focused understanding: Tianluokeng or Gaobei/Hongkeng or Chuxi (choose one of three)
🪧A Few Additional Points
1. I think Tianluokeng is more interesting and cost-effective than Yunshuiyao, which is more frequented by tour groups, but it still depends on your purpose. If you just want to stroll around, it doesn't matter which you choose.
2. Just choosing any key Tulou will give you a general idea, as there are so many, they only differ in layout and features, that's all.
4. Apart from Chuxi Jiqing Building, you have to pay to go upstairs in other Tulous, be aware of free tea and free well visits.
5. Tulous are generally located on mountain roads, requiring walking, so it's recommended not to wear high heels.
🍜Eating and Accommodation
Yunshuiyao and Tianluokeng both have well-equipped restaurants and homestays, while other Tulous have villagers who cook for themselves, suitable for individual travelers, and not every Tulou offers in-house hostels, most do not.
🚗How to Get There
Departing from Zhangzhou Ancient City:
1. Join a tour group: One-day tour prices usually range from 300 to 700.
2. Chartered car: Tianluokeng + Yongding Tulou King 550, Tianluokeng + Chuxi 650 (excluding tickets)
3. Self-driving: Yongding and Nanjing are about 100 kilometers away from Zhangzhou, about a 1-hour drive one way.
4. Public transportation: Tianluokeng/Yunshuiyao/Hekeng have minibuses from Nanjing high-speed rail to the scenic area, and each scenic area is quite scattered, with no taxis available.

Fujian Zhangzhou Zhangzhou·Fujian
Zhangzhou, a beautiful coastal town with few people. It is less commercialized than Xiamen, and the seascape is more artistic and fresh than Gulangyu. It has a unique Tulou culture, and if you come here, you must visit the Nanjing Tulou. The Tulous are built against the mountains, arranged one after another, forming a huge and unique cluster of Tulous, and the whole scene is breathtaking. May is a great time to visit the islands here. Dongshan Island is the second largest island in Fujian, and it has an Italian-style 'Colorful Fishing Village', with vibrant houses and simple villagers, as if you've stepped into a postcard.

Wugong Mountain is one of the three famous mountains in the south of the Yangtze River, and it is most famous for its endless high mountain meadows. Many hikers take advantage of the weekend to camp here, watching the sea of clouds during the day and the stars at night, having an intimate encounter with nature.

The Zhangye Danxia landform has been selected by the American 'Huffington Post' as one of the 22 most unforgettable landscapes in the world. When you come to Zhangye, you will find that the rough Northwest also has a gentle side. It is not the traditional red landform, but a colorful Danxia, with bright colors such as deep red, yellow, orange, green, cyan-gray, gray-black, gray-white, etc., undulating like waves, shimmering with light. The most beautiful time is at sunset, when the colors change constantly with the sunlight, and the sunset, white clouds, peaks, and Danxia form a stunning natural painting that jumps out at you, as beautiful as a peacock spreading its feathers, making people linger and forget to return.

Xiamen-Nanjing Tulou Self-Driving Tour Guide
May Day holiday/weekend holiday, sisters planning to take a family self-driving tour can refer to
1. Before departure, you can buy tickets on 'Ctrip' (Note: Children under 120cm in height do not need tickets, the elderly over 65 years old do not need tickets, the elderly between 60-65 years old only need to buy half-price tickets, children over 120cm in height only need to buy half-price tickets) —— One day's time, this time we only went to the 'Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster'
2. A piece of advice for sisters, don't wear high-heeled shoes, because the roads in the scenic area are all stone roads, so high-heeled shoes are not good for walking, and the shoes are also prone to wear
3. Leave by car at 10:00 am 🚗, it is estimated to take 2 hours to arrive (taking the elderly and children, so the main focus is on a relaxed self-driving tour)
4. After arriving, don't rush to check tickets and enter, 🉑 first find a local cuisine restaurant on the roadside around the scenic area to have lunch, and then set off after eating, because there is nowhere to eat inside the scenic area
4. After checking tickets, drive all the way in, various mountain roads 😅
5. First stop, go to the 'Four Dishes and One Soup' best photo spot 🎥 to take pictures, you can take a full view photo of 'Four Dishes and One Soup' (you can spend 10 yuan to ask a photographer 📸 to help take a family photo)
6. Second stop, visit the 'Four Dishes and One Soup' scenic area
7. Third stop, visit the 'Yuchang Building' scenic area
8. Fourth stop, visit the 'Deyuan Building' scenic area
Note: There are many local residents (usually aunties) at each scenic spot asking if you need a guide, the price is between 20-50 yuan, depending on personal needs, can't resist the aunties' enthusiasm ❤ At Yuchang Building, we still spent 20 yuan to find an auntie to lead the way and explain. After entering, she handed us over to her niece to introduce, and it was quite detailed, feeling 💰 is still well spent 🉐 value.

Earth Building (Tulou)
These unique structures are home to the Hakka people who migrated from the central plains to settle down in the mountain in Fujian province. A few generations of families stays in each Tulou. They have practical reasons for doing so, with protections from bandits as being one of them. No wonder Hakka people tends to be closely knitted. #tulou #nanjing

Harmony in Clay: Exploring Fujian Tulou 🏯
Nestled in the scenic landscapes of Fujian Province, Fujian Tulou stands as a testament to the ingenuity and communal spirit of the Hakka people. 🌳 These unique earthen structures, designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, date back centuries and continue to captivate visitors with their architectural charm and cultural significance.
Fujian Tulou, or "earthen buildings," are large, round, or square communal residences built with rammed earth, wood, and bamboo. 🏡 These fortified dwellings served as homes, temples, and clan halls for multiple families, offering protection against bandits and natural disasters.
The intricate craftsmanship of Fujian Tulou reflects the Hakka people's deep connection to their surroundings and their commitment to sustainability. 🌱 The circular layout fosters a sense of unity and harmony among residents, while the thick earthen walls provide insulation and protection from the elements.
Visitors to Fujian Tulou can explore a variety of architectural styles, from the iconic "round houses" of Chengqi Lou to the grandeur of the "square houses" of Zhencheng Lou. 🔄 Each Tulou is adorned with ornate carvings, traditional paintings, and symbolic motifs that offer insights into Hakka culture and beliefs.
As you wander through the narrow corridors and spacious courtyards of Fujian Tulou, you'll be transported to a bygone era of communal living and shared heritage. 🌿 The timeless beauty and cultural significance of these earthen structures make Fujian Tulou a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to delve into China's rich history and architectural wonders.
