The Gothic Quarter (ElGotic or BarriGotic) is the central area of the old city of Barcelona, extending from Las Ramblas to Via Laietana, and from the Mediterranean Seafront to Rondade SantPere. It is the birthplace of Barcelona and an area where attractions are concentrated. Apart from undergoing some changes in the 19th and early 20th centuries, many of the buildings were built in the Middle Ages, some of which even date back to the Roman period. Remains of the square Roman walls can still be seen in some places. The medieval Jewish ghetto ElCall is also located in the district. The cathedral and palace of the old town are still in use today and are well preserved. The Gothic Quarter retains an intricate street plan, with many small streets and squares, and is small in size, making it ideal for strolling around.
