Suburbs of Tokyo | Gotokuji Temple, Brimming with Beckoning Cats.
Gotokuji Temple, brimming with beckoning cats. Located in Setagaya district of Tokyo, I went there by a self-driving tour. The surrounding environment is quiet and comfortable. Inside the temple, there are over a thousand white beckoning cats greeting visitors, earning it the title of 'Birthplace of the Fortune-Bringing Cat'. Depending on the season, you can see different types of flowers blooming in the temple grounds. When I visited in December, I even saw some autumn leaves. The weather was nice that day, and wearing a kimono to take photos added a special atmosphere!
For those who love cats as much as I do, don't miss out!

Visit the cat temple for good luck
You’ve probably noticed this temple start to pop up all over social media. Gōtoku-ji is a Buddhist temple located in the Gōtokuji district in the suburbs of Tokyo. Although it’s a little out of the way from most of the other tourist attractions in the city, if you’ve got plenty of time in your Tokyo itinerary I would include it, however if you’ve only got a very limited time I would probably skip it due to the extra transit time.
It’s known as the lucky cat temple because of all the maneki-neko (those white cat figurines with their paw up, which symbolises good luck).
The temple also allows you to purchase your own cat figurine in a variety of sizes, with the smallest ranging from 300yen / $3 to the largest at 5000 yen / $50. You can then make a wish on the cat for good luck and leave it behind at the temple with all the other cat figurines or take it home with you. They do say though if you do take it home with you, once your wish is fulfilled you should return the cat to the temple to give thanks.
There’s also an actual cat that lives at the temple so be sure to keep an eye out.#Tokyo

✨ The origin of Gotokuji: It is said that once a person came back from hunting and passed by here, he saw a cat waving at him. He was very curious and followed the cat into the temple. Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya Tokyo Japan
Gotokuji Temple in Setagaya has always been high up on my list of MUST-VISIT places in Tokyo. I nearly missed it, but I’m so grateful that I made it there. It turned out to be an incredibly serene and tranquil experience for me, one that truly touched my heart and soul. I wholeheartedly recommend this enchanting spot to you, as it is an absolute gem when you find yourself in Tokyo, Japan. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the adorable neko (cats) zone, buy the cutie pie Fortune cat dolls and make a wish while you’re there — they’re absolutely awesome in aesthetics!
.
During my visit, I had the intention of purchasing 2x fortune cat dolls. One as a souvenir for myself and the other for making a wish. However, I encountered a restriction at the counter where they informed me that each person was only allowed to buy one. It made me question whether it was worth trying my luck for more, but I quickly reminded myself not to be greedy, considering it is a religious place after all.
.
As I shared updates on my Instagram story, a loyal follower of mine noticed regards this in our usual chat in DMs. It was incredibly heartwarming to learn that their family was planning a trip to Tokyo as well. To my surprise and immense gratitude, this kind individual actually purchase the doll and sell it to me at the exact rate when I missed the opportunity. I want to express my deepest gratitude and say a big THANK YOU to this special person. You know who you are, and your kindness truly touched my heart.

Haode Temple is a great place to shoot pictures with a kimono. However, there aren't many kimono stores near Haode Temple. I was able to find only one (Akasuka Love Kimono). Once you're done visiting Akasuka, you can visit Haode - the birthplace of the lucky cat. It is a quiet zone, with very less tourists disturbing the peace. The legend here is that Igami Hiroshi followed a cat from the temple to the shelter and fell at peace after listening to the discourse from the monk. Since then, the temple has become the Bodhi Temple of the Jingyi's. The Temple of the Cat was built and dedicated to the singing cat. There are more than a thousand cats beside the palace and they're all very cute. You can wear a kimono and take the short walk from Akasuka to see the cats and enjoy the peace of the area.

Gotokuji Temple in Tokyo | A Guide to Must-Visit Tourist Spots
The temple grounds of Gotokuji are densely packed with greenery, featuring plum, cherry, peony, paeonia, azalea, and other various flowers, and are equipped with a Buddha hall, a three-storied pagoda, a bell tower, and a red gate. Located in Setagaya Ward, far from the heart of Tokyo, the area has a local atmosphere that allows visitors to forget the hustle and bustle of the city and return to life.
It is said that the cat worshipped at Gotokuji Temple is actually a 'beckoning cat of good fortune' with its right hand raised, which is different from the 'beckoning cat of wealth' with its left hand raised that we are familiar with, so it might be more appropriate to call it the 'Beckoning Cat of Good Fortune Shrine'. However, whether it's a 'beckoning cat of good fortune' or a 'beckoning cat of wealth', any cat that brings luck is a good cat! After taking photos, remember to go inside the temple office to have a look, where you can buy various sizes of beckoning cats of good fortune, with the smallest one costing only 300 yen, marked with the word 'bean', probably because it's as small as a bean!
They are really too cute! Highly recommended for friends who visit Gotokuji Temple to take one home!

Cat slave, how could I not come to Haode Temple~
Houde Temple is a Soto Zen temple located in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo. Originally a Rinzai Zen temple, it is also known as Daikyozan. Inside the temple grounds, there is a "Beckoning Cat Hall," which is the reason why many people come to this place. In addition, the cats have one paw raised, which means to beckon wealth, and the other paw raised, which means to beckon good fortune. If two beckoning cats are used, one left and one right, then "wealth" and "fortune" can arrive together. The gender of the cats can also be distinguished by the paw they raise. In Houde Temple in Tokyo, the male cat that raises its right paw has the meaning of beckoning wealth and good fortune, while in the temple in the West, the female cat named "Yu" raised its left paw to greet guests. The gold bell hanging on the chest of the beckoning cat also has the meaning of opening up luck, beckoning wealth, good fortune, and creating relationships.
⛩️How to get there
Take JR to "Shinjuku Station" and transfer to "Odakyu Line" to "Hōtoku-ji Station".
There are two ways to get to the "Haode Temple".
1. You can see the sculpture of the beckoning cat as soon as you come out. Follow the navigation to find the fortune cat. Walk along the Hode Temple shopping street for about 10 minutes.
2. Take the streetcar without electricity on the Tokyu Setagaya Line to "Miyano".
[Banqiao Station] Just a 3-minute walk from the station.
In the courtyard, there is a cherry blossom tree. During the cherry blossom season, the lucky cat waits quietly under the shade of the tree, creating a strong visual impact. There are many Japanese-style houses around, and it is very quiet. In the afternoon, taking a leisurely walk around the area would also feel great~

Since I have raised the ash, I can be attracted to the cat when I go there. This time I went to see cherry blossoms in Tokyo and went to a relatively small cherry blossoming place, "Haode Temple", which is one of the origins of Japanese lucky cats. There are piles of lucky cats everywhere in the temple. It is so cute to hold small claws one by one!
"Haode Temple" In the Setagaya area of Tokyo, it is convenient to walk from JR Howe Station. There is a quiet residential area near the temple. It is very comfortable to walk all the way. This 500-year-old temple has a simple and quiet environment, and white lucky kittens can be seen everywhere. There are cherry trees near the temple. There are not many people coming here during the cherry blossom season. You can enjoy cherry blossoms quietly, and you can also draw a horse to pray. It is recommended that the cat slaves come to this quiet and quiet cherry blossom spot~

I have always disliked the tourist attractions of regular people, so I went to Tokyo this time. I have seen a lucky cat shrine on the Internet. I was very impressed and always wanted to go to the card. This time I came to Tokyo. This legendary lucky cat temple: Haode Temple, although I have seen photos taken by others on the Internet before, but I have seen so many lucky cats in front of me, I still feel very shocked! !
Haode Temple, the birthplace of Zhaofu cat. Legend has it that Igami Hiroshi followed the cat to the temple to shelter from the rain. He heard the monks legal talks in the temple and felt very attached. Since then, Haode Temple has become the Bodhi Temple of Jingyis family. The Temple of the Cat was built in the temple, dedicated to the cat Guanyin. There are also more than a thousand lucky cats beside the cat hall, which is full of cuteness.
Every spring, the cherry blossoms in the entire temple can be seen as a perfect place to avoid the crowd and enjoy cherry blossoms.
Come here to make a wish and donate to the temple, you can get a big or small lucky cat. When the wish comes true, I will come back here, so I have more and more lucky cats here.
