It's really not in Suzhou! It turns out that there is such a place in Shanghai too
When it comes to gardens, the first reaction is Suzhou. Suzhou has famous gardens like the Humble Administrator's Garden, Lion Grove Garden, and Canglang Pavilion. However, Shanghai also has a famous garden, but not many people know about it, which is Guyi Garden.
Guyi Garden is located in Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. It is one of the five major classical gardens in Shanghai, the other four being Zuibaichi, Qiuxiapu, Qushui Garden, and Yuyuan Garden.
Guyi Garden mainly consists of several scenic spots such as Yiyetang, Xiechi Pond, Songhe Garden, Qingqing Garden, Yuanyang Lake, and Nanxiang Wall. It is a 4A-level scenic spot, but the ticket is only 12 yuan, which is really cheap.
In addition to the famous lotus flowers, another sight worth seeing in the scenic area is the bamboo, which is really abundant. There are also pavilions by the lake, and occasionally there will be dry ice, making it really like a fairyland.

Guyi Garden (古猗园) in Shanghai
Guyi Garden (古猗园) near Nanxiang (南翔古镇) in northern Shanghai makes for a very nice half-day getaway from the city center.
Not nearly as famous as some of the other gardens and parks in Shanghai, it's no less picturesque. The garden boasts multiple ponds, bridges, pavilions, and rock formations.
And the lack of crowds makes it even more appealing when you're looking for a bit of downtime.
The admission fee when I went was 12 RMB. Check the opening hours before you go. On the day I went it closed at 16:00.
The Nanxiang (南翔) metro station on Line 11 is the closest station to the garden. You can also visit the old town of Nanxiang, which is supposedly the birthplace of xiaolongbao (小笼包).

Shanghai's most beautiful garden - Guyi Garden.
With a history of 500 years, Guyi Garden is still the most beautiful garden in Shanghai, comparable to the gardens in Suzhou. It is very quiet and the ticket is cheap, making it a cost-effective classical garden.
Ancient buildings in Guyi Garden:
🌟Yiyetang: Built in the Ming Dynasty, also known as "Nanmu Hall", it was originally the main hall of the garden. It is a typical Ming Dynasty garden architectural style: flying eaves, simple and elegant colors.
🌟Buxizhou: A boat-shaped stone building built on the water. The Nanxiang xiaolongbao created by Huang Mingxian, who used to sell on the "Buxizhou", has long become one of the special delicacies of Shanghai.
🌟Baihe Pavilion: The Baihe Pavilion is five-petaled in shape, with a five-pointed top and high wings, like a peacock spreading its tail. The pavilion is topped with a white crane, ready to fly south, vivid and lifelike.
🌟Yuanfeiyueyu Pavilion: Built in the Ming Dynasty, it was originally a thatched cottage under a curved pond. Inside, you can look up at the flying cranes in the sky and look down at the fish leaping in the water, full of natural interest.
🌟Weiyin Pavilion: Built with donations from the "Weiyin Society", a folk association composed of intellectuals in the Nanxiang area before liberation.
🌟Quejiao Pavilion: Built in 1933, it is missing the northeast corner due to the September 18th Incident, meaning to remember the shame and never forget patriotism.
📍Address: No. 218, Huyi Highway, Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, Shanghai
🚗Transportation: Take Metro Line 11 to Nanxiang Station, walk west for 15 minutes after getting off, or take Jiading 129 or Jiading 111 after exiting from Exit 2.
👍️Must-see attractions: Yiyetang, Xiechi, Buxizhou, Baihe Pavilion, Nan Hall, Quejiao Pavilion, Tangjingzhuang, Weiyin Pavilion, walk east, pass Yuanyang Lake, Songhe Garden, to Qingqing Garden.
🎟️Ticket information: Adults CNY 12; students with ID half price; 65 years old CNY 10; 70 years old and retired cadres, active military personnel free.

Shanghai is never short of beautiful places, and it's as beautiful as a painting here.
"Guyi Garden, Shanghai" Since I moved to Jiading, I started to explore the nearby parks. I can't deny that life in the city is very convenient, but I never thought that there would be so many parks in Jiading, and they are so beautiful. Guyi Garden is one of the five gardens in Shanghai. Address: No. 218, Huyi Highway, Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, Shanghai. Transportation: Exit 1 of Nanxiang Station on Subway Line 11, 15 minutes' walk. Parking: You can park at the entrance, and there is a large parking lot opposite, which is also very convenient. Tickets: CNY 12, free for people over 65 years old. Strolling in the garden, admiring hydrangea and lotus, stone bridges and weeping willows, pavilions and waterside pavilions, a few ducks swimming by, it's so cozy, I like everything here. The garden is not particularly large, and it takes about 2 hours to visit. If you come to take photos in Hanfu or cheongsam, the artistic conception is full, it must be beautiful!

The most beautiful thing in summer is the lotus flower🪷
Each flower has a beautiful name,
Lotus, white lotus, red lotus, furu, handan, water lily, water cloud, water wood, water hibiscus, June flower god...
In Shanghai, you can see so many, such beautiful lotus flowers,
Only in the ancient Yuyuan Garden in summer!

Who understands! I wait for this time every year
This year's Lotus Exhibition will be held from July 6th to August 10th, with Guyi Garden as the main venue, and the two sub-venues are Zuibaichi Park and Shibo Cultural Park Shen Garden.
Tickets: 12 yuan
Transportation: Exit 2 of Nanxiang Station on Metro Line 11, transfer to Bus Jiading 129 or take a taxi (about 1.4 kilometers)
Guyi Garden was built in the early Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and is one of the five major classical gardens in Shanghai. The quality of the annual Lotus Exhibition is very high. The combination of Jiangnan gardens and green lotus is a perfect embellishment.
In the garden, lotuses, bowl lotuses, and various water lilies bloom in competition. They either stand gracefully in the pond or are delicately placed in various flower vessels. Whether viewed from afar or up close, one can feel the unique elegance and refinement. The sunlight casts on the water surface, forming a heartwarming moment of light and shadow together with the green lotus and pink petals.
Wandering through the corridors and pavilions, one can encounter lotuses every few steps. The light mist adds a touch of ethereal beauty, and the sound of clicking cameras can be heard, indicating the making of great photos.
P.S. It's too hot now, so it's more comfortable to go early in the morning. Guyi Garden opens at 7:00 AM, and there are creative ice creams in the garden to cool you down.

Lotus Appreciation at Guyi Garden
The lotus and water lilies in Shanghai are in full bloom, spreading like "summer paintings" across Guyi Garden. We braved the high temperatures early in the morning to visit Guyi Garden for lotus appreciation and photography.
This is a must-visit spot for us every year...
Guyi Garden is a classical garden with a long history and rich cultural connotations. It was first built during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty and was originally named "Yi Garden." It was later renamed "Guyi Garden" in the eleventh year of the Qianlong reign (1746) of the Qing Dynasty. It features typical Jiangnan garden styles, with pavilions, terraces, towers, small bridges, flowing water, rockeries, and bonsai...
At this moment, the lotus flowers are either in full bloom or budding, swaying gracefully in the breeze. The occasional misting adds a touch of ethereal beauty to the lotuses, making them appear even more elegant and otherworldly, like a dreamlike fairyland...
The bonsai garden features miniature lotus plants in various delicate pots, which are simply stunning...

No specifically planned itinerary
On the way to Nanxiang Ancient Town, I stumbled upon Guyi Garden
On a whim, I decided to take a look
I found that there were very few people, it was easy to walk around, and very leisurely
Actually, it's much bigger than I imagined 💚
It takes about 3-4 hours to walk through

Guyi Garden has two entrances: South Gate and North Gate
The opening times for the two gates are slightly different, so take note
The times I wrote are for the South Gate 😎

Nanxiang Ancient Town is also on the next street
If you come, you can visit both places together
But Nanxiang Ancient Town is really crowded 😇

The ancient Guyi Garden is filled with the fragrance of lotus flowers
Every year, from June to July, it becomes a world of lotus. At this moment, in the ancient Guyi Garden located in Nanxiang Town, Shanghai, the lotus flowers cultivated in the garden are blooming in full splendor. In the ponds and under the green shade, the lotus fairies sway in the wind, looking exceptionally enchanting.
Every summer and autumn, the Guyi Garden hosts a Lotus Festival. It is said that the garden cultivates more than 200 varieties of lotus flowers from both domestic and international sources. Various lotus flowers and water lilies bloom in succession, creating a stunningly beautiful scene. Naturally, the garden is also packed with visitors at this time. I assert that the lotus flowers in Guyi Garden, in terms of variety and scale, are among the best in Shanghai's parks.
Lotus flowers belong to the genus Nelumbo in the family Nelumbonaceae. In folk tradition, lotus flowers and water lilies are often collectively referred to as lotus flowers. They have many other names, such as lotus, water hibiscus, water flower, and marsh orchid. Every summer, the lotus fairies in the pond compete to bloom, making it an excellent place for visitors to admire and photograph the lotus flowers. I sigh with admiration: "Admiring the hibiscus in Guyi Garden, the lotus fairies fill the pond with beauty. The gentle wind sways the ripples, making this the most beautiful scenery on earth."
Ancient literati and poets also cherished lotus flowers, leaving behind many poems and essays. Late Tang Dynasty poet Li Shangyin's poem "Lotus Flower" is the best portrayal of the lotus: "No color can compare, nothing can match its fragrance. Cool mats are set up to enjoy the breeze, golden reins fall in the evening. The lamp illuminates the brocade, the water wets the silk. Imagining the farewell in the previous autumn, dreaming of the boat song in separation." Although it does not mention "lotus flower" directly, it gives the highest praise to the lotus, stating that no other flower can rival it, and its fragrance is unique.

The garden is divided into four scenic areas: Yi Garden, Fragrant Fairyland, Qu Creek Crane Shadow, and Secluded Reed Moonlight, featuring verdant bamboo, Ming and Qing architecture, tranquil winding streams, flower-stone paths, and couplets of poetry.
The Duck and Drake Lake, surrounded by red maples and azaleas, and the Missing Corner Pavilion is one of the must-visit spots.

You can't possibly still be unaware of Shanghai's Nanxiang Ancient Town!
You wouldn't still be unaware of the thousand-year-old ancient town of Nanxiang hidden in Shanghai's Jiading District, would you?🏰 This place was once known as the 'Little Nanxiang Rivals Suzhou' for its beauty in history, and now let me take you on a journey to explore this ancient town filled with old-world charm!
Nanxiang Town is not only home to the ancient gardens of Guyi Garden and Tan Garden, which are full of the charm of the Jiangnan region, but also the Nanxiang Old Street with its white walls and black tiles, small bridges over flowing water, and houses lined up amidst bustling shops, as well as the popular Yunxiang Temple, and the Liang dynasty relics of the Twin Pagodas and ancient wells.🌟🌟
My weekend itinerary in Jiading goes like this: Guyi Garden—Yunxiang Temple—Nanxiang Old Street (Tan Garden)—Wisteria Garden (a romantic sea of flowers in spring)—Dinner in Nan (the top-ranked Benbang cuisine restaurant in Jiading, remember to queue up!)
Guyi Garden, an ancient classical garden built during the Jiajing era of the Ming dynasty, is one of the five great ancient gardens of Shanghai. The garden is divided into four scenic areas: Yi Garden, Fragrant Fairy Garden, Qu Creek Crane Shadow, and Secluded Reed Smoke Moon, featuring lush green bamboo, Ming and Qing architecture, tranquil winding water, flower-stone paths, and poetic couplets.🌿
Nanxiang Old Street is a paradise for food lovers, offering distinctive local delicacies such as Nanxiang small steamed buns, Dingsheng cake, lard rice candy, fermented rice wine, and more, allowing your taste buds to enjoy an authentic culinary journey.🍽
Nanxiang Twin Pagodas, built during the Liang dynasty, stand 11 meters tall with eight sides and seven stories, and have a history of over 1500 years, making them a treasure among China's brick pagodas.🏯
Tan Garden, the private garden of Ming dynasty literati and artist Li Liufang, is small but features 'mountains and forests within a few steps, with many superior views,' reminiscent of the scenes where literati and artists of the past gathered to recite poetry and drink merrily.🎨
Transportation is super convenient, with the Nanxiang Station Exit 2 of Metro Line 11 just a 1.2KM walk to Guyi Garden; you can also choose to take the high-speed train to Nanxiang North Station, which is only about ten minutes away. Guyi Garden is just a 680-meter walk from Nanxiang Old Street.🚞
Family, let's go! Don't miss this thousand-year-old ancient town trip within an hour's subway ride from Shanghai, let's go check in at Nanxiang Ancient Town together!🏞

Nanxiang Guyi Garden and Impression City: The largest classical garden in Shanghai and an ecological commercial complex
Guyi Garden is located in Nanxiang Town, Jiading District, Shanghai, and is the largest classical garden in Shanghai. It was originally built during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty (1522—1566), initially named Yi Garden, inspired by the phrase 'lush bamboo' from the Book of Songs; later, it was designed and constructed by Zhu Sansong, a bamboo carving artist from Jiading, featuring a variety of bamboo scenes carved on pillars, rafters, and corridors. In the 11th year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1746), the garden was expanded and renovated, and its name was changed to Guyi Garden.
The garden comprises six major scenic areas: Yiye Hall, Playful Goose Pond, Pine and Crane Garden, Qingqing Garden, Mandarin Duck Lake, and Nanxiang Wall, creating five distinctive features: verdant bamboo, serene winding streams, Ming Dynasty architecture, couplets of poetry, and beautiful flower and stone paths. The style is simple, elegant, refined, and pure.
The nearby Impression MEGA City is a commercial complex with a construction area of 340,000 square meters, featuring an ice rink, department stores, a food court, etc., with a modern decoration style. The atriums, such as Crane Dance and Crane Soaring, are rich in Nanxiang characteristics, and the rooftop walkways, courtyards, and soccer fields combine fitness and leisure.
Impression City is located at the Chenxiang Highway Station on Metro Line 11.

A tranquil retreat amidst the hustle and bustle of the city
In Shanghai, there is a place where you can experience tranquility and a sense of distance, the ancient and elegant Jiangnan garden—Yuyuan Garden. The winding rivers, exquisite stone bridges, verdant willow trees, and the beautiful garden architecture reflect each other, intoxicating visitors. The architectural styles of the Hui School, Jin School, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with their pavilions, terraces, white walls and black tiles, and exquisite carvings, exude a strong Jiangnan charm from every angle. Being there is like traveling back to the water towns of Jiangnan a thousand years ago.
Strolling through Yuyuan Garden, the first thing that catches your eye is the emerald bamboo and curved bridges by the lake. Walking along the lake, you can enjoy a variety of flowers and trees, as if you are in a paradise. Among them, the most eye-catching are the pavilions and towers of Yuyuan Garden, which are either simple and elegant or exquisitely delicate, each emitting a strong cultural atmosphere. Unwittingly, one is attracted by the timeless beauty, and there are even designs like small buildings on a boat, which are astonishing and admirable. Hidden among the dense green trees are surprises that make people linger.

Take Shanghai Metro Line 11, get off at Nanxiang Station Exit 2, and transfer to Bus 119

The secret to happiness is to go out more often~ Guyi Garden
After visiting Guyi Garden for two consecutive years to document the late spring and early summer neem trees, I've gained many friends, attention, and likes.
Among the numerous comments, what struck me the most was that everyone seemed to be reminiscing about their childhood. There would be several tall neem trees in front of their homes or on the path back home. As a child, one might not have found their blossoms pretty, or even disliked their scent, but as an adult, one realizes the beauty of neem flowers and starts to miss the past...
I think what everyone misses more is the companionship of childhood friends, the sight of elders working hard, and the fruits that fell from the trees which could be made into bracelets, slingshot pellets, bath medicine, and so on... It's a sentiment for the happy times of childhood and the company of loved ones.
So, it's important to go out often, to see beautiful scenery, to get closer to nature, to notice things that you didn't pay attention to before. Even if it's just witnessing the blooming of a flower, the leisurely drift of a cloud, you might find yourself with an involuntary smile from the heart!

Start of Summer | A breeze of chinaberry flowers marks the end of spring affairs for the year
A breeze of chinaberry flowers marks the end of spring affairs for the year.
Shanghai, you really know how to enjoy yourself.
Yesterday, in the Guyi Garden, I encountered several chinaberry trees in full bloom.
I casually remarked that the Start of Summer must be near.
Then I was informed that 'tomorrow is the Start of Summer.'
At that moment, the concept of the Start of Summer took on a tangible form.
The chinaberry flowers drifted down, their faint fragrance lingering.
When the chinaberry flowers have all fallen, and the messenger winds cease,
It will be the bright and beautiful summer.
In Shanghai, chinaberry flowers are not only found in Guyi Garden;
You might chance upon them on the streets as well.
But the chinaberry trees in Guyi Garden, with the backdrop of traditional Chinese architecture, have an extra charm.

The 500-year-old Guyi Garden makes a stunning return, and it's the perfect time to admire the plum blossoms
The Guyi Garden, one of Shanghai's top five gardens, is in the prime of its 500-year elegance.
In spring, visit for the bamboo; in summer, for the lotus; in autumn, for the chrysanthemums; and in winter, for the plum blossoms. The garden is beautiful in all seasons and is a perennial favorite on the travel list of Shanghai residents.
Now, in the winter of Shanghai, as the plum blossoms bloom and all things revive, the poetic essence of the winter garden reaches its peak. The garden, adorned with wax plum trees, succumbs once again to the beauty of classical Chinese aesthetics.
📸Tour route:
❶South Gate Entrance
Nanxiang Wall: Right after entering, a welcoming screen wall stands with the pattern of 'White Cranes Flying South', outlining the historical legends of Nanxiang Town.
❷South Pavilion: Stroll east to the South Pavilion. Immerse yourself in the leisure of a Jiangnan garden.
❸Xiangyun Pavilion: Ascend the steps to Xiangyun Pavilion, located atop Turtle Hill, offering panoramic views of Yuanyang Lake and Qingqing Garden.
❹Qingqing Garden: A realm of bamboo. The place with the richest variety of bamboo species, over 30 types of green bamboo complement the pavilions and towers, creating an elegant scenery.
❺House of Indispensable Bamboo: The red columns of the gallery add depth, and the courtyard is filled with golden yellow wax plums.
❻Flower God Temple: The garden has dozens of red, green, white, and wax plum trees, offering plum blossoms throughout the seasons, looking forward to the winter's 'snow yielding to the fragrance of plums'.
❼Deficient Corner Pavilion: Atop Bamboo Branch Hill in Guyi Garden, the people of Nanxiang built this pavilion missing its northeast corner, hoping future generations will not forget the national humiliation.

Appreciating lotus in summer
When it comes to viewing flowers in summer, everyone probably thinks of lotus, after all, the lotus in full bloom is really 'out of the mud and not stained' beautiful to make people intoxicated, beautiful to make people obsessed, since ancient times there are too many too many praises of lotus. But there is another flower at this time that is not inferior to the lotus, that is the lotus, take advantage of the summer to appreciate it.
Recently, the annual Lotus Festival is being held in Nanxiang Guyi Garden, where the lotus flowers stand tall and charming, attracting people to come and record this exclusive beauty with their mobile phones.
At this moment, many friends found that in addition to lotus, lotus also bloomed in large areas. Lotus is different from lotus, it is not ostentatious, there is no lotus-like flowers and leaves out of the water, only horseshoe-shaped leaves quietly floating on the water, gathered together, as if painting on the lake. And in these green leaves, there are many lotus flowers. Although it does not have the large flower shape of the lotus, nor the swaying posture of the lotus, it adds a lot of color to the originally monotonous lake surface by sticking to the water surface one by one. The red is passionate, the white is pure, the pink is bright, the gold is holy.... Under the sunlight, the whole lake is colorful and beautiful.
A flower is a paradise, a grass is a world. A smile is a dust edge, a thought is a quiet, the heart is a lotus bloom. Standing by the lake and appreciating the lotus, you can better understand its 'washing clear and not demon'. Under the sunlight, its crystal clear petals layer upon layer but show the most beautiful appearance, the flower opens and the petals are the best blessing to the world. From time to time, bees and butterflies linger in the flowers, and a faint fragrance comes with the wind, making people feel relaxed and happy.
A red and a green pair of pretty, a smile and a frown a spring tide, a butterfly and a bee a pool of water, a flower and a leaf a pool of charming. This charming lotus is elegant and refined, and it is also a beautiful landscape in summer.
In summer, driving 'little grey' to see lotus, watch lotus, take all this beauty unique to summer.

The ancient Yi Garden is beautiful in winter
The ancient Yi Garden is also one of the well-known Ming and Qing dynasty gardens in Shanghai, with its pavilions, terraces, towers, and pavilions scattered in an orderly manner, and the small bridges and flowing water fully demonstrate the characteristics of the gardens in the south of the Yangtze River. When winter comes, in the slightly cool winter, the ancient Yi Garden is really beautiful.
Parking around the ancient Yi Garden is convenient, making it very suitable for driving here. I parked my car in the parking lot on Guyi Garden Road, and it was just a few minutes' walk from there. The ticket price is 12, and I remember that seniors over 60 years old can enter the garden for free with their ID card, which is very user-friendly. The first thing you see when entering the garden from here is the winding corridor, and after exiting the corridor, you can see the exquisite layout of the garden.
The Wulao Peak, which is piled up with rocks, resembles five immortals of high virtue playing chess and enjoying tea together, very lifelike. The pavilion appears half-hidden in the distance, with a unique charm. Walking along the gravel path, the view suddenly opens up and you reach the heart of the lake and the Nine-Turn Bridge. Standing in the lake pavilion, although there are no large lotus flowers at this time, the surrounding scenery is still captivating. In the distance, the calm water surface, the blue sky and white clouds, and everything around are reflected in the water like a colorful oil painting. Nearby, fish are playing, and water birds are frolicking, sketching a vivid picture that is fascinating. The stone horse by the lake used to be very famous, just like the current popular photo spots, and it seems that many people can find photos of themselves riding on it at home. The highest point in the garden, the Quejiao Pavilion, and the large grass screen face each other across the lake. I remember that as a child, I loved to shuttle between the two, sometimes climbing up to the Quejiao Pavilion to look into the distance, and sometimes chasing and playing on the lawn...
Time has changed, and now the ancient Yi Garden seems even more beautiful. Although there are no flowers blooming in profusion this season, with more than 20 kinds of color-leaf trees in China changing their attire one after another, this place has become a new horizon of beauty.
The ginkgo is definitely the protagonist of this season, with the golden ginkgo leaves and the mottled tree trunk complementing each other under the sunlight, making it even more romantic; the red maple is also not to be outdone, with layers upon layers a bit flamboyant, each leaf now so red that it intoxicates the heart; the garden full of green bamboo is still clear, and this green color in winter brings people an incomparable sense of comfort...
This winter, the ancient Yi Garden may not have the fragrance of a full garden, but it does not lack touching colors. Given time, when the plum blossoms in the garden bloom, it must be an elegant picture of fragrance assailing the nostrils, and if you are lucky enough to encounter a heavy snowfall, the scene of searching for plum blossoms in the snow should be even more beautiful.
This winter, the ancient Yi Garden is really beautiful Guyi Garden

Visiting the ancient Yi Garden in early spring offers a unique experience
I'm not sure whether to consider it winter or early spring, but due to taking the child out for walks, I've been wandering all over Shanghai. This time, I visited the ancient Yi Garden in Jiading.
🤌 First, let's talk about the general impression: It's a small but exquisite garden, with an ancient charm and many small scenes. When it's not crowded, it's quite nice to enjoy the flowers and take photos, allowing for a moment of relaxation. However, when it gets crowded, the experience significantly worsens as the narrow paths become even more congested. As for the scenery, it's not much different from other gardens; you can refer to the photos I took on site.
Now for some practical tips:
🚗 It's best to drive here, but the parking lot 🅿️ is quite small. If it's full, you can park at the Junfeng Plaza across the street.
🍚 Dining options are all outside the garden, so it's better to play in the morning and then go out for lunch. Planning to spend the entire day here isn't very realistic, as the garden is quite small after all.
