Seoul Friendship Festival, Seoul meets the world
#visitseoul
Fancy getting to know the world without flying overseas? The Seoul Friendship Festival features booths showcasing both their culture and food in different sections. Seoul is a very multicultural city whereby people from all around the world resides in Seoul, either working or due to other missions. That's why this is also an opportunity for people from all around the world stationing in Seoul to introduce their country to the Seoulites. Besides getting to know the culture, I am extremely interested at the food booth being a food lover myself. There are numerous booths offering their local delicacies and we just feel like having them all, thus we just get a little of each from each booth and savour them bit by bit. This is indeed a very nice festival to foster friendship among countries and induce harmony through culture and food.

Scumptous Dinner at Gwanghwamun Seokgalbi
Galbi, which also means ribs in Korean language, is always a favourite among the locals and is best consumed them marinated. The tenderness and juicy flavour of the ribs after grilled is hard to resist. This restaurant at D-Tower Jongno, Seoul, serves grilled ribs course meals for dinner. There are choices of beef or pork to be chosen and each course is served with salad, beef tartare, korean side dishes, fermented bean soup etc. The grilled meat is then served after grilling for 10 minutes on hot stone with spread of onions and chives. The experience is really good especially having the meal with a party of several person.

Fine quality Shabu Shabu in Seoul
#seoul
In this cold weather many would like to enjoy a nice hot pot of shabu shabu to keep oneself warm. This shop in Gwanghwamun, called Ilpumdang serves this hotpot dish paired with locally produced high quality beef. The 3 storey building is good for those who likes hot dishes in this winter season. They also have individual rooms for those who would like to host private parties or functions. Paired with vegetables fresh from the farm, the soup broth is meaty but with the sensation of freshness from the vegetables. Truly enjoyable to have this nice dish during winter.

Korean style Chinese restaurant, Sandong
When talking about Chinese restaurant in Korea, many will think off Black Soilsauce noodles and Seafood noodles. This Chinese restaurant in Gwanghwamun called Sandong, serves a variety of Chinese food well liked by the locals. In lunchtime people will flock in to enjoy various dishes. My personal favourite is Jaengban Jjajang (plated Soilbean paste noodles). It usually comes in minimum 2 portions and this upgraded version of Jjajangmyeon comes with pork slices, squid, shrimp and mushrooms. Their specialty dishes such as Dried chilli chicken, Dongpo pork, fried shrimp is also a hit. Do expect some waiting timw during lunch time.

Christmas Market at Gwanghwamun Square
#2023travelwish
This year 2022 is the first Christmas whereby reopened Gwanghwamun Square hosted Christmas event, and this year they organized a Christmas Market. There are around 30 stalls selling different items and ornaments and visitors from around the city flocked in to enjoy the lights and decorations. There is a huge Christmas Tree situated in the middle of the square and you also see overseas visitors visiting as year end is also the season of traveling. Though weather is freezeing and frightful but this doesn't stop visitors from flocking in.
My 2023 wish is to visit a Christmas Market in England.

Felt Coffee: Good Coffee in downtown Seoul
Felt Coffee is found in the basement of the KT Gwanghwamun East building.
The staff are kind, polite and cheerful and the coffee is prepared quickly. There is an open space to have your coffee on site but I prefer taking it out and having it along the stream, especially when the weather is good.
The decor of the store is very open and airy, with dark subtle tones that remind you of the boldness of their coffee. Their coffee is refreshing, tasty and bold, especially when it comes to their americano.
Stop by for a higher than normal priced coffee albeit a tastier and stronger blend than usual!

Gwanghwamun Square, remodeled and better
Many who previously visited Seoul will definitely drop by Gwanghwamun Square as it is a symbol of heritage and culture of Korea, with the statue of King Sejong and Admiral Yi Shun Shin, but the City Hall has decided to remodel it to extend the pedestrian walkway and adding many amenities. After a 2 year long refurbishment work, the plaza was finally reopened to the public, and it is much more cozy and comfortable to hang out with much more spaces, benches and tables for vositors to hang out. There are alsoany events taking place every weekend to showcase the Korean culture to visitors and tourists, and the walkway to Gyeongbokgung is also fascinating.

🇰🇷 Gwanghawmun Gyeongbokgung
In Gyeongbokgung, there are too many places and gates but this Gwanghawmun is the first and main entrance located on the south side. It is also the largest gate and you can witness guards changing ceremony here too. If you know a little bit about Korean history or from K-drama, The King Sejong is represented as a statue at Gwanghawmun. So be sure to be there to witness the guards changing ceremony and it is free of charge. It is only when you want to enter Gyeongbokgung that you will have to pay. Otherwise, wear your hanbok and enter for free.
Have a seoul-prise in South Korea.

The Gwanghwamun (or Gwang-Hwa-Mun) Plaza
One cannot help but to compare the Gwanghwamun Plaza of Seoul with the Trafalgar Square of London, where The Nelson’s Column was erected to commemorate Admiral Horatio who died in the battle Trafalgar. The imposing status of Admiral Yi Sun Sin, a highly decorated and much revered, or even worshipped Korean naval commander, a legendary national hero, stands majestically at southern end of Gwanghwamun Plaza.

ICEICEE
The symbols of Korea are present - the most brilliant monarch, with a copper statue of King Sejong the Great, as well as a statue of the loyal admiral Yi Sunshin, which are located in the center of Seoul, in Gwanghwamun Plaza. This was the front gate of the Gyeongbokgung royal palace during the reign of King Taejo of Korea, and is the national gate. Gwanghwamun “illuminates all and civilizes all” and the directly opposite Gwanghwamun Square area is one of Seoul’s most flourishing districts.
The city gate tower of Gwanghwamun is clearly in the Chinese style, since over hundred of years, the buildings, writing, culture, and customs have all been heavily influenced by China, and thus received the name of “little China.” Several hundred years have passed quickly for Gwanghwamun Square, which has clearly become a bustling district. Here, we saw an open-air Korean band, using traditional Korean and Western instruments in their performance, which is an entirely different interesting matter.

A date with King Sejong the Great in Seoul
#travelanywhere
Am always fascinated by history and so was definitely excited to see King Sejong’s Statue at Gwanghawmun Square in Seoul….
The statue commemorates King Sejong the Great (1397-1450, reign 1418-1450), the fourth king of Joseon (1392-1897).
He is said to be the greatest king in Korean history, for he is responsible for great developments in science and technology, expansion of Joseon’s territory, and the creation of the Korean script, Hangeul…
The statue which was unveiled in 2009, has been called "South Korea's most iconic statue."

A nice set lunch of Ori Bossam and Sundubu Sambap
#travelanywhere
In Seoul, the concept of fusion and contemporary sprouts uo everywhere as they gained popularity especially among the young generations. This restaurant, located at Gwanghwamun, called aino kitchen garden, has a very modern setting and offers traditional Korean cuisine. We ordered their most famous Duck Ssambap which comes with a plate of roast duck, kimchi, salad, vegetablds and soft tofu stew. The taste is awesome and the price is also very reasonable too, at 38000 per set of 2 person. The interior is decorated with modernism and you feel very comfortable when dining there. We will definitely visit this awesome restaurant again.

The best pork soup and pork slices
#travelanywhere
Dwaeji Gukbap (Pork slices with soup) or Sundae Gukbap (Blood sausage with soup), is very famous among the locals in Korea and is regarded as a comfort food especially during cold weather. We encountered this nice place which serve a very good bowl of pork slices and pork bone soup, called Tamla Sundaeguk Gamjatang. The pork slices are very big and the portion is very generous. We also ordered a medium portion of assorted pork slices consisting different parts of the pork, and we had a great time enjoying them at night. The pork are flown from Jeju Island which is very famous of its Black Pig, which explains the marvelous taste of the delicacy. This will be the place where I will dine when I visit Gwanghwamun.

Seoul's Five Grand Palaces Pilgrimage
I spent two days touring the five grand palaces of Seoul, not looking too closely, because they are not as small as I imagined.
🚶🏻
Gyeongbokgung Palace, which I have visited too many times, has had many buildings reconstructed compared to a few years ago, and its scale remains the largest.
🚶🏻
Changdeokgung Palace, a World Cultural Heritage site, is the best-preserved palace architecture in Seoul. It served as a substitute for Gyeongbokgung Palace for over two hundred years when it was damaged, and it is also the best place for photography. The Gwanghwamun Square in front of the gate is worth visiting.
🚶🏻
Deoksugung Palace, once used as a detached palace, is now a park, and the interior is not open to the public.
🚶🏻
Deoksugung Palace, opposite Seoul City Hall, is a park next to a busy street.
🚶🏻
Changgyeonggung Palace is connected to Changdeokgung Palace, with many garden plants.
🚶🏻
Changgyeonggung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace were once part of the same complex as the Jongmyo Shrine. During the occupation, they were damaged and divided into two parts, and now the Jongmyo Shrine is also a World Cultural Heritage site.

Gwanghwamun Gate | The Symbol of South Korea's 'National Gate'
⏳ Brief History: Gwanghwamun is the national gate of South Korea. Originally a wooden structure built on a stone base, it is considered one of the greatest gate structures in Korean history due to its exquisite craftsmanship, ingenious structure, and magnificent appearance, ranking first among the five major palace gates of Korea. Its tumultuous history is a reflection of Korea's humiliating colonial past.
🌟 Highlights: Starting from Gwanghwamun Square, to the north is the Emperor's Palace, Gyeongbokgung, with the current presidential residence, Cheong Wa Dae, behind it. To the east of Gyeongbokgung is Samcheong-dong, famous for its coffee shops. East of Samcheong-dong, through the alleys, is Bukchon Hanok Village, which has countless traditional Korean houses. Further east is Changdeokgung, representative of Korean traditional courtyards, with the royal ancestral shrine Jongmyo directly south of it. To the west of Jongmyo is Insadong, where various traditional items are sold. Back at Gwanghwamun Square and heading south past the beautiful Cheonggyecheon Stream, you can reach Deoksugung, which combines eastern and western courtyards. In terms of touring time, it is quite challenging to finish all the attractions in this area in one day, and two days are definitely needed. However, if you only want to choose representative buildings, then one day is sufficient. Interested friends can also take the time to visit Gwangjang Market or Tongin Market, which are representative traditional markets of Korea, where you can experience the traditional Korean atmosphere and taste authentic cuisine.
❤ Recommended Reason: Gwanghwamun Square, as the iconic landmark of Seoul and the forecourt of the main gate of Gyeongbokgung Palace, features statues of General Yi Sun-sin, King Sejong the Great, and the Seoul mascot Haechi. The Sejong·Chungmugong Story Exhibition Hall is also located in the semi-basement of the square. The figure depicted on the 10,000 won note is King Sejong, and the Korean script seen today was invented by him to help commoners who could not understand Chinese characters.

What’s now in Seoul
It was fantastic to witness such dynamics in the historic part of the city. There were so many people to check out the public light exhibition and the media show in the evening at the central plaza in Gwanghuamun, even with the cold and wet weather conditions. I loved it!
