Weekend Market in Penang
Located south of the UNESCO heritage site in Georgetown, the old Hin Bus Depot has been converted into an art and event space. Entry is free and it houses an exhibition gallery (on rotation), cafes, bookshops and studios.
While the space is open all week long, the space really only comes alive over the weekends, where the Hin Market is held from 11am to 5pm. Local craft and popup stalls take residence under the pavilion, while food and drink booths occupy the area further down, where tables and chairs are set up for diners. There’s also a dedicated clothing section for thrift shoppers. When you’re tired, grab a seat and enjoy the live music performances.
If you’re in the area, I also recommend the sandwiches at Le Cafe and the speakeasy Backdoor Bodega, both of which are located right beside Hin Bus Depot. Citadines Connect Georgetown Penang around the corner is a good option if you wish to stay nearby!

Hidden Casual Bar in Hin Bus Depot, Penang🇲🇾

📍How Shy, Penang
Another hidden gem in Penang discovered! How Shy is a casual bar and dining place located in Hin Bus Depot, where there are a lot of pop up stores and events going on every weekend. We were there after breakfast and this casual bar caught our eyes! The set up is so cute and unique, in an open air area, it was a little hot in the afternoon but it was airy and breezy. They serve a good selection of drinks, beer wines, and of course we need to grab a drink! Such a cool and chill place to hang out, was a really peaceful and laid back afternoon here in How Shy. They do also serve other food items like fries, oyster. Would love to revisit again, perhaps during the evening where it’s not so hot!
I wish to travel to Hong Kong for the food!

🚌 Sunday Market @ Hin Bus Depot
#mymymemories
Hin Bus Depot is a creative community hub located at Jalan Gurdwara, Penang. Refurbished from an old bus depot, the building now houses art exhibitions and installations, cafes and restaurants.
We attended the Sunday market and the whole place was packed. There were lots of booths, musicians were performing and children were running around and playing. The vibes were certainly 💯, we'll give them that!
Although Hin Bus has its charm and potential, it is still pale in comparison to the likes of RexKL and more.
Food were extremely overpriced and many items sold were lacking in quality. It made us wonder, do they even vet through the vendors properly when they accepted applications?
Honestly, it felt more like tourist trap than a place to celebrate creativity. It was unfortunate.

A super satisfying food trip to the Penang!
It was a short yet fulfilling trip to Penang!
It started with a visit to the Traditional Kopitiam - Joo Leong cafe where they serve eggs in cute green little cups and toasts with margarine. It was crowded early in the morning so pay a visit there early.
Next, we went to the famous tourist spot, Kek Lok Si temple where they housed a huge Guanyin statue. It’s fun to walk around and feel the peacefulness. Do try out the short cable car trip to the second or third station of the temple to reach the Guanyin statue.
The popular Ayer Itam Asam laksa is just a stone away from the base of the temple. The service was fast and the soup was flavourful. Not to forget the famous Penang Road chendol that everyone has to try! It has a super rich taste of coconut sugar with coconut milk topped with green smooth jelly ! Perfect choice as a dessert under the hot sun!
Do check out the Sunday market - Hin Bus Depot if you happened to visit Penang on weekend. It’s the latest hipster spot where various art and craft creators gather and show their work. Live band performance is pretty cool too.
Eating is never ending in Penang, a few others food that you must check out are prawn noodle and oyster omelette at Lebuh Presgrave, char kway teow, parse bye and curry noodle at Cecil street market.
Wait no more ! #penangtrip #penangfood #penangfoodie

Hin Bus Depot is a former-bus depot-turned-creative hub, brimming with art galleries, cafes, bars, and artist studios. There are nooks and corners to chill out in throughout the week, although we reckon that Sunday afternoon is the best time to visit, for it’s when the place is bustling with a pop-up flea market, live music and street food stalls.

Hidden gem market in Penang
In July 2020, during the pandemic reopening, I visited Hin Bus Depot in George Town, Penang, with my parents.
Originally just an exhibition space and outdoor stage, Hin Bus Depot has evolved into a vibrant hub for art and culture. Today, it boasts a diverse range of facilities, including cafes, restaurants, bars, a tea house, artist studios, a yoga studio, and a library. The space regularly hosts art exhibitions, music gigs, theatre productions, and festivals, reflecting its dynamic creative scene.
A highlight is the Hin Market, held every Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm, where local artisans showcase their handmade products and creativity. This unique venue has become a cornerstone of Penang's cultural landscape, offering something for everyone.

Their home-baked brioche bun was heavenly when paired with the patties melting in your mouth. We wished they gave us more onion rings, but it was so delicious - we couldn't complain more! They currently offer lunch sets (Burger + Sides + Drink) at only RM22!

📍Hin Bus Depot
31A, Jalan Gurdwara, 10300 George Town, Penang
Hin Bus Depot is a creative hub that houses arts and event spaces in the heart of Penang Island! It’s got both indoor and outdoor art exhibits and lovely pop up stores during the weekend pop up market, in which this happens on every weekends! Lively atmosphere, sometimes there is live bands, performances as well! We visited Hin Bus Depot during Coach pop up. The decorations were amazing, with Coach holiday bus, some cute mini trucks selling drinks and other local brand products, with stunning Komtar Tower at the back! Lovely place to soak in the chatty lively atmosphere and have some fun!
In 2024, I wish to travel to Seoul, Korea!

Hin Bus Depot
This market is not only a great spot to shop for unique items and taste delicious food, but it's also a cool place to hang out and relax. If you have some free time, watching the various activities happening around can be entertaining. In addition to the craft and food stalls, there's a great cafe and an outdoor coffee truck where you can grab a drink and recharge. And if you're in the mood for something fancier, there's even a wine bar that serves oysters!
