Hongya Cave: Chongqing's Aburaya and the Symphony of 'Spirited Away'
In the mountainous and riverine city of Chongqing, there is a place called Hongya Cave, located on Binjiang Road in the Yuzhong District by the Jialing River. It is not only a bustling commercial street but also resembles the real-life counterpart of the Aburaya bathhouse from 'Spirited Away'. Today, I will take you into the story of Hongya Cave, to explore the magical connection between it and the Aburaya, and to see its unique 'one feature, three marvels, four streets, and eight sights'.
🌟 Hongya Cave: A Thousand-Layered Wonder on the Cliff
The name Hongya Cave sounds like it comes from an ancient legend. Its stilted buildings, stacked layer upon layer, seem to be built up by some mysterious force. When night falls, the colorful lights illuminate the entire complex, reminiscent of the brilliantly lit Aburaya in 'Spirited Away'.
Aburaya: The Fantasy World's Hot Spring Inn
In the pen of Hayao Miyazaki, Aburaya is a mysterious hot spring inn for deities to rest. Every corner is filled with fantasy and adventure. Hongya Cave is like the real-life version of Aburaya, where every turn may reveal a new story.
Hongya Cave's Features:
One Feature: The Fusion of Culture and Leisure
Its 'one feature' represents the cultural and leisure industry, just like the hot spring inn in Aburaya that provides a resting place for deities, Hongya Cave also offers visitors a perfect blend of culture and leisure.
Three Marvels: Stilted Buildings, Old Town Market, Ba Culture
The 'three marvels' include the stilted buildings, which are layered upon each other as if built by some mysterious force, echoing the towering structures of Aburaya. The old town market reminds one of the bustling marketplace around Aburaya, and the profound heritage of Ba culture resonates with the mysterious culture in Aburaya.
Four Streets: The Intersection of Fashion and Tradition
The 'four streets' of Hongya Cave—Dynamic Bar Street, Bayu Style Street, Feast Food Street, and Exotic Style Street on the City Balcony—each have their unique charm, just like the streets around Aburaya, where every turn brings a new discovery.
Eight Sights: The Eight Wonders of Hongya Cave
The 'eight sights' are the eight wonders of Hongya Cave, including Hongya Dripping Greenery, Confluence of the Two Rivers, Stilted Building Complex, Hongya Sculpture Group, City Balcony, Ba Culture Pillars, Riverside Food Street, and Jialing Evening Glow. Each sight has its unique charm, making one feel as if they are in the fantasy world of 'Spirited Away'.
Hongya Cave, this Aburaya of Chongqing, is a bridge between reality and fantasy. It is not only a business card of Chongqing but also a dream in everyone's heart. Here, you can find traces of history, feel the breath of culture, and experience the liveliness of life. Next time you come to Chongqing, why not step into Hongya Cave and immerse yourself in this place full of stories, to find your own adventure and dream.

This season in Chongqing is just too comfortable, ☀️ with bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures, perfect for a citywalk.
Today, I recommend a citywalk route that I often take for street photography, which includes many of Chongqing's classic photo spots. Locals, see if you have been to these places and captured these spots.🧐

I often travel in cities and outdoors, always recording the beautiful moments. I've been using the Telecom Mountain City card, with 100G of data every month, always ready to share the scenery with family and friends. The transmission speed is not affected in the mountains or some old residential areas, video calls with family and friends are very smooth, and photo transfers are very fast~

Chongqing - Photo Shooting Guide
Had a wonderful and relaxing weekend in Chongqing.
Two-day itinerary🌈
day1⃣️: Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street→Chongqing Zoo→Longmenhao Old Street→Jiefangbei→Hongyadong
day 2⃣️: Stroll around the nearby old community in the early morning to experience life, take photos📷 and look for community hot pot restaurants→Liziba→Eling Second Factory
🌝Actually, my itinerary is not rushed, I am more slow-paced, so you should play and check in according to your own situation.
Photo guide:
🌑Pic 2: "I'm in Chongqing" billboard - Guanyinqiao Pedestrian Street Navigate to "Longhu Chongqing Beicheng Tianjie Southeast 1st Door", you will find it under the overpass, there is a downhill, the billboard shows about 2.3 minutes once, watch the time to capture, it only appears for a few seconds each time.
🌑Pic 3: "Guanyinqiao Poster Zebra Crossing" is also in Beicheng Tianjie, you can see it while strolling around, shoot on the second floor, or go to the third floor to shoot, if you bring a camera, you can have a magazine cover with a couple of shots!
🌑Pic 4: "Chongqing Zoo" This one is not so good to shoot, after all, the national treasure panda is still quite far away.
🌑Pic 5, 6: "Longmenhao Old Street" Changjiang Cableway, it's really not easy to get good shots on cloudy days, to be honest, the sun in Chongqing is really luxurious, I just shoot casually, walk and shoot.
🌑Pic 7-9: "Daijia Lane" and "Jiefangbei"
Had "Chunhong Hot Pot" near Daijia Lane in the evening, it's very spicy, but fragrant! As soon as I came out of the store, I saw the Cat and Mouse Wall, took a few simple shots, cute and good for photos.
Jiefangbei, avoid the crowd, turn on Apple's portrait mode, use the special effect dynamic blur of Xingtu in post-production - advanced editing, then erase the characters you want to keep. A little bit of retouching and you can get the picture!
🌑Pic 10: "Hongyadong" Just find those photographers shouting for photos at Hongyadong and let them take a few shots for you with a telephoto lens (if your photography skills are average, but you want to get the picture quickly), the little brother can also guide the action! No need to squeeze people, things that can be done with money.
🌑Pic 11-13: The sun came out that day, so I went out for a walk after getting up, strolling around the old community, the hotel is "Xinshan Hotel Chongqing Beibin Road", so I navigated to the nearby community hot pot restaurant, it's very delicious and cheap, and you can also stroll around the old community, feel the morning life, the pace is slow, and it's very comfortable.
🌑Pic 14: "Liziba" From Liziba No.1 to the direction of Eling Second Factory about a hundred meters you can see it, a bunch of people standing there looking up to take pictures, the street dressed like soldiers to find you to take pictures don't bother, 25 yuan.
🌑Pic 15-16: "Eling Second Factory" There are really too many people, a place where artistic young people gather to take pictures and check in, really can't compete for the venue. So I had afternoon tea there, tried "Weilu Boiling Tea", chatting and watching the tourists coming and going outside the window while drinking tea📷📷.

Hongyadong: The dreamy scenery under the night
"Chongqing Hongyadong, a spectacle carved by time." When I stood on the viewing platform of Hongyadong for the first time, I was deeply attracted by this amazing natural wonder. Now, let me take you into this fairyland on earth and experience its unique charm at night.
Hongyadong is located on the bank of the Jialing River in Chongqing, a typical karst landform. The terrain here is steep, and the ups and downs of the visual experience make people feel extremely shocked. And after nightfall, the scenery of Hongyadong is dreamlike, as if people are in a ink painting.
When night falls, the lights are beginning to come on. The night view of Hongyadong begins to show its charm. The entire scenic area is illuminated by lights, as if it has become a brightly lit castle. The light projected on the river surface forms golden light bands, jumping with the fluctuation of the river water, making people feel incredibly dreamy.
And the night view of Hongyadong has a unique flavor. The orderly ancient buildings under the light look even more unique, as if people see the style of ancient Bayu. At the same time, the stilted buildings by the river are also illuminated by lights, reflecting with the light bands on the river surface, forming a beautiful picture.
Here, you can feel the unique charm of Chongqing mountain city. Standing on the viewing platform, you can see the whole view of Hongyadong, feel the grandeur and beauty of this place. At the same time, you can also feel the life attitude and enthusiasm of Chongqing people here.
In general, the night view of Hongyadong is a beauty that cannot be described in words. It makes people feel shocked, but also makes people feel peaceful and harmonious. If you haven't been to Hongyadong, then I strongly recommend you to come here. When you really see its night view, you will understand why I recommend it so much.
Hongyadong is a place where people linger. Whether it is day or night, it shows different beauty and charm. There are not only amazing natural landscapes, but also humanistic atmosphere that makes people feel cordial. If you want to experience a different kind of travel experience, then Hongyadong is definitely a place worth coming.
Here, you can stroll along the riverside walkway, enjoy the beautiful scenery on the river and the architectural style around. You can also taste Chongqing's food in nearby restaurants, feel the unique taste and culture of this city. All these will let you understand and feel the charm of Hongyadong more deeply.

Mesmerised by the warmth of the lights…
Located bang in the centre of Chongqing, Hongya Cave is a real delight for the eyes!
I started at the top and made my way down the 9 levels to the riverfront where you can snap that famous picture of the place in its entirety.
There are a ton of vendors selling all sorts of food and drinks so i suggest arriving hungry 🤤
If you want a (slightly) more relaxed feel then you should visit during the week. At the weekend its extremely busy but in some ways that just adds to the experience of it all.

Hongyadong also named Hongya Gate before, which was one of the oldest gates in Chongqing in the past. It is located at Cangbai Road, which is the intersection riverside zone of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River. The incredible place has another name of “a stilted building on the cliff, and the old Chongqing in memories”. In the meanwhile, it is an eye-catching building community featured with Bayu culture.

Experience the Amazing Hongyadong via Cruise 🚢
Address - No. 88 Jialingjiangbinjiang Road Yuzhong
Ambiance/Facilities - Hongyadong is more than a place; it's an event! The light show on the buildings is majestic and awe-inspiring from the sightseeing platform, but go down approximately three stairs to grab a ticket and take the cruise across the river. The view is breathtaking from there and the ship has seating areas and snack shops to keep you comfortable. If you want, you can join the VIP area to get comfortable couches right next to the rails but you still have an amazing view from the general deck, along with seating and snacks.
Highlights - Chongqing proved itself with this magnificent feature. It's the only place I've visited that I'd actually return to instead of heading to other locations on my bucket list. The ride is nice across the river. You get a clear view of the buildings 🏫🏢 without getting other people in your shots. You get to see the bridge close up as the cruise ship travels right underneath it. It was fun watching other cruise ships pass and you could hear the cheerful sounds of passengers as we called out to each other. There are professional photographers offering their service along the platform before you get to the cruise. They charge 30 yuan for a photo. You can get good shots for yourself if you adjust your camera 📸🤳 to suit the lighting. Try to do that so you can get there most put of the view you'll see from the cruise.
Avg price per person: There are different options to choose from ranging from 88-198 yuan per person. My 3 year old daughter entered for free. VIP upgrade costs 80 yuan per person.
Rating: Definitely a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ star location. The best of Chongqing. #chongqing #hongyadong #cruise #tour

Hongyadong- Chongqing’s “Shiny Place”
Ah Chongqing!!!! Saw this place in a picture once, years ago & thought; It’s Lit. And lit it is, literally sand figuratively. The first time my friend and I saw it from a distance we called it the Shiny Place. Hongyadong adds to Chongqing’s already unreal cyberpunk city distinction. There is tons to see and do here from the walk-abouts, someone foretelling your future in a language you don’t understand, to quaint live music pubs. Locals were friendly too which made for quite the memorable experience. It is top 3 things to set your eyes on when you go gallivanting into the big CQ!
Vuri
Enjoy the closeness with humanity
The place is not only an engineering marvel where they converted a cave into a shopping complex as if it wasn't enough they provided a waterfall... you know just in case it wasn't enough. The place really lits up at night and while traveling up or down the cave or even below at the riverside to take a picture of this marvel you will feel the humanity so close to you.. I meant literally

Bright lights, small city.
This area is often advertised as one of the top 10 things to see in Chongqing. Is it worth it? YES! Is it also one of those places that attracts the hundreds of local and foreign tourists from the whole of Chongqing? Also yes. Be aware that the later you go the more people will come and it will be more than impossible to get through the crowds. My partner and I spent an afternoon at the sky bar in the intercontinental hotel and waited for the lights to come on before taking a short 15 minute walk to this hot photographer spot. We got here around 8:30pm and it was busy by this time already. There are lots of people asking you if you want to buy photos and flowers and the walkway to view this site is actually quite small. Recommended time to go will be just after sunset! Please do not drive or get a taxi late, as the road becomes congested and it will be impossible to leave. #passionpassport #china #gooutside #cityscapes #awesomepic

Hongyadong Chongqing Night Attraction
This is a bustling spot! Very popular and busy tourist attraction situated right on the riverside. This is a great photo spot and a must see when visiting Chongqing!
Getting There - there is a metro station in the area (line 6/1 - xiaoshizi) but you will need to walk around 10-15 minutes to get to your destination. A taxi is also an option but we sure to get dropped off a little away from the area because traffic can get quite crazy.
PS - The lights switch on just after sunset and the area starts to get busy shortly after. The bridge and city building lights switch off at 9:30pm so be sure not to visit too late.

Chongqing’s most famous landmark
Since the rapid development of the Internet, Chongqing has become one of the hottest cities, which attracts people to visit. Chongqing is famous for stereoscopic landscapes, which is unusual in other cities. Hongyadong is one of the representative urban tourist areas with three-dimensional (3D) landscapes. Meanwhile, the major landscapes at Hongyadong are stilted buildings and imitation antique buildings. The collection of buildings cover 46 thousand m2. As a unique “pedestrian street in the air”, Hongyadong becomes an integrated area of sightseeing and recreation. Additionally, many people said that it had the silhouette of the Spirited Away, from Miyazaki Hayao, especially at night. There are 11 floors here. The lights will illuminate Hongyadong from 6 o’clock in the afternoon and lights out at 10 o’clock at night.

Old Meets New at Chongqing’s Hongyadong
Hongyadong is a multi level, stilted shopping and dining center. It was once part of Chongqing’s city gate but in recent years has been refurbished into a commercial and tourist center.
Hongyadong is situated at the intersection of the Yangtze and Jailing rivers in downtown Chongqing. At night the entire area is lit up and a spectacular blanket of red lanterns and golden rope lighting.
Hongyadong has something for everyone! Flea market booths, noodle shops, ice cream stalls, tea and herb vendors as well as a large array of hot pot restaurants.
If you make your way to the very top of Hongyadong you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the Yangtze River and downtown Chongqing!

City in a Mountain
Chongqing, or the city in a mountain as it’s famously known, is a sight for sore eyes 😍
It’s filled with gorgeous views everywhere you look - from the bright lights of Hongyadong to the instantly recognizable Qiansimen bridge 🌉, there are no shortage of attractions in this city
But be warned, there’s a reason for its nickname⛰
Chongqing is very mountainous and you will often find yourself walking up countless stairs when trying to get from one destination to another (and if you’re like me you’ll wind up at countless dead ends after your trek then have to reroute 🤦🏾♀️)
Put on your walking shoes, make sure you pack water, and grab your camera to see all that Chongqing has to offer!

Lights in the Night - Chongqing
Over the National Holiday, we took a trip to Chongqing. This was a city I’d wanted to visit for months. On the first night, we had lots of rain, but we still went to Hongyadong area to see it in the evening. For a rainy national holiday, the area was packed with people. if you’re claustrophobic it’s not a place to visit, also there are lots of steps.
When we entered the commercial area, we had to queue before entering. The entrance brings you into the 6th floor of this area. The steps area is tight and narrow so it’s definitely worth noting.
Once you reach the 2nd floor of this commercial area, you can venture out onto the street to come to the front of Hongyadong. For the best photo view, take the road to the bridge and cross the street. You can also catch a glimpse of Chongqing’s yellow taxi cab from up here.

Day/Night mode....☀️🌙
Honyadong Commercial Area is one of the most vibrant parts of Chongqing and a major tourists attraction. It is a lively place at both day and night. Located close to Jiefangbei CBD and on the banks of the Yangtze River, it comprises a large indoor shopping area, various restaurants and old buildings built on and around the hillside and into the hill itself, hence the cave name. There are many hotpot restaurants and places selling local snacks as well as street food stalls underneath. Inside the large building is a plethora of small boutique shops selling everything from clothing, toys and trips to souvenirs and furniture. During the day it is a nice place to come and walk opposite along the river promenade and gaze at the bridges and the boats. At night, crowds descend on this area to eat, take photos and do their shopping. However, it's best to try visiting at both times as they offer very different experiences. At night, the buildings are vibrantly lit up and can see the opposite CBD, bridges and skyscrapers lit up also-a very impressive sight. Daytime is definitely quiter and is the best time to explore the small alleys and shops because there are less people around. 🌉🌇🏙️

Hongya Cave, Chongqing
A friend proclaimed to me "It's like Studio Ghilbi", and she's not wrong. Take everything you ever thought about China and throw it into this relatively small structure.
Historically an 11 storey building, build up the side of a cliff face, this maze of shops, restaurants and entertainment never ends. It' beautiful on the inside, and out, if not a little chaotic.
There's one enterance that's incredibly easy to find and you can spend hours wondering around the markets, slowly making your way further up this scifi like location. Get your ears cleaned, feet massaged and listen to live music all night! Highly recommend.

Was immensely thankful this year for the ability to travel a bit even in spite of the pandemic. Very much wishing a happy holiday and joyous new year for the entire world as we desperately need something better than we had in 2020.

The shopping area of Chongqing is known as Hongya Caves. Getting photos at night is the preferred way as they are so arresting. Be prepared for lots of crowds. It is free to enter the area, but very touristy. #merrychristmas

Hongya Cave is not really a cave, it is more an area of Chongqing, China. It has a history of over 2,300 years and started as a military fortress. Today it is better known for its famous nightscape. #merrychristmas
