Jeondong Cathedral is a modern Western-style building completed in 1914. It is called "a large-scale and long-standing historical building in the Jeollabukdo and Namdo regions", and it is a place for pilgrimages to Jeonju. The towering tile-roofed buildings in the Temple Cave Temple completely retain the Roman architectural style. Not only the appearance is special, but the interior design is exquisite and beautiful. Look carefully at the glass windows and painted roofs, as well as pictures introducing martyrdom. The greening effect in the church yard is very good, with a few green pines and cypresses, a few clusters of wild flowers, and scenery pictures in the corners. On the left-hand side of the inner courtyard of the church, there is a very thick tree with a diameter of about dozens of people.

Welcome to
Welcome to the historic site No. 288: the Jeondong Catholic Church in Jeonju city. Not only korean style buildings are registered as historic sites in the Korean Peninsula, but also western style buildings like this one. This is the first Romanesque building in the Hoban region and was built to honor the Roman Catholic martyrs who lost their lives during the Joseon Dynasty. Currently located few meters away from the Pungnammun Gate, it’s a place you won’t miss during your trip to Jeonju.

Jeondong Cathedral: Timeless Beauty on a Gloomy Day
#koreatrip #jeonju
Jeondong Cathedral in Jeonju held a unique charm even on a gloomy day. The overcast skies seemed to enhance the cathedral’s stunning red-brick facade, highlighting its intricate Romanesque and Byzantine architectural details. The soft drizzle created a serene atmosphere, with raindrops glistening on the arched windows and the quiet courtyard. Inside, the warm glow of candles and the peaceful ambiance provided a stark contrast to the somber weather outside, inviting us to pause and reflect. Despite the gloom, the cathedral radiated timeless beauty, making it a memorable stop during our visit to Jeonju.

Located within Jeonju Hanok Village, this landmark and cultural heritage site is a must-visit in Jeonju. It is the first martyrdom site in Korea and the first Romanesque-style building in the Honam region, making it particularly significant. As it is a religious facility, entry is not permitted during mass times. Many visitors are unaware of this and miss the chance to see the interior. Most masses are held on weekday mornings, Saturday afternoons, and Sundays, so it is recommended to visit on a weekday afternoon when it is less crowded to fully appreciate the interior.
- Mass Schedule -

Must-Visit Spots in Jeonju! Jeondong Catholic Cathedral and Gyeonggijeon Shrine!
✝️ Jeondong Cathedral & 🇰🇷Gyeonggijeon Shrine
Experience the antique style of the Jeondong Catholic Cathedral and the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, which houses the portrait of King Taejo Lee Seong-Gye~
It might seem like an odd combination, but it's a pairing that seems possible in Jeonju. The two places are right next to each other, so it's great to visit them together.
Jeondong Cathedral is not very large, but it's surrounded by cozy clusters of Western modern-style buildings, making it a nice place for a leisurely stroll.
If you're a Catholic, you can also attend Mass, so keep that in mind.
Gyeonggijeon Shrine may not have new buildings, but it has modest Hanok (traditional Korean houses) and you can see the portrait of King Taejo Lee Seong-Gye, the founder of the Joseon Dynasty. It's as if you can feel the energy of Lee Seong-Gye~
There are also many cafes nearby and places selling Jeonju's famous chocolate pies, making it a nice spot for a casual visit.
