Jianchuan, an ancient city without tourists~
It still preserves more than 100 ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Many are still used as residences.
Signs reading 'Immovable Cultural Relic' and 'Historic Building' can be seen hanging on the doors everywhere.
Every household has couplets pasted on the walls.
It is said that during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Jianchuan produced over 500 scholars and distinguished literati.
Truly a historical and cultural city by name and by nature.
Qianshi Mountain
Boasts ancient cypresses that are 1300 years old.
The stone lions dressed in green.
If time allows and you have plenty of energy, it's worth checking in.
Jian Lake
Taking a look at the birch forest is also quite nice.
Along the way, try some food at Dongxiangge.
If you're not driving yourself, transportation is not particularly convenient.
Wangji Liangfen's cold noodles
Originally are with sesame paste.
Not quite suitable for my Sichuanese taste.
But the locals really like it.
Ice milk, I give a shout-out.
Shan Lao Tui's ham stewed chicken is worth a try.
He Ji Donkey Meat's braised and spare ribs can be mixed.
Huaxin potatoes are fried with sauerkraut.
The sound of the wind chimes on the second floor of Xingye Coffee is currently my favorite.

Rather than Dali or Lijiang, I recommend this lesser-known gem of a small town
Between Dali and Lijiang lies a treasure of a small town called 'Jianchuan'. With a history of 1300 years of establishment, situated at a strategic point on the ancient Tea Horse Road, 🍃 the town conceals within it a lake, two towns, and three mountains. It is the quaint town recorded in Xu Xiake's travel notes and also a prototype in Jin Yong's martial arts novels. 💁🏻♀️ Few travelers know about this place, but it's worth making a special trip to Dali just for it.

🔎Route: Jianchuan Ancient Town—Jian Lake—Shaxi Ancient Town
🕑Duration: 2 days and 1 night
·
✅Jianchuan Ancient Town
Well-preserved Bai ethnic courtyards from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and the millennium-old Jianchuan woodcarvings. This town is one of the three major 'famous cultural towns' in Yunnan, with a strong scholarly atmosphere, and couplets in front of every household. The indigenous people have lived here for a long time, making it a tranquil ancient town full of life.
.
🙌Recommended spots:
Ximen Street, Jia Ma Inn, Jingfeng Pavilion, Dacheng Hall, Qian Lion Mountain, Jianchuan Ethnic Museum, Shizhongshan Grottoes
·
✅Shaxi Ancient Town
Nestled deep in the mountains, this place is the last ancient market on the Tea Horse Road, where the horse caravans were once prominent. 'Go to the Place with Wind' was filmed here, and it is equally unspoiled by excessive commercialization, everything is artistically romantic just right.
.
🙌Recommended spots:
Ancient Theater Stage, Sideng Street, Yujin Bridge, Xingjiao Temple, Dongzhai Gate, Pioneer Shaxi Bai Ethnic Bookstore, Half Mountain Coffee, Shanfeng Courtyard
·
✅Jian Lake
Besides Erhai Lake in Dali, the lesser-known Jian Lake is equally stunning! The 'Jian Lake Palace' where Duan Yu falls off a cliff and enters at the beginning of Jin Yong's 'Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils' is located here. The lake water is azure blue, and there are birch forests, sometimes you might even encounter a shepherd uncle.
.
🙌Recommended spots:
Lake East Wetland, Lake West Birch Forest, Sangling Village
·
🔺Tips1:
Shaxi Ancient Town has a market every Friday, featuring some local goodies. Don't miss it if you have the time
🔺Tips2:
Public transportation is inconvenient, it is recommended to charter a car or drive yourself. If you have time, you can visit the 'Shizhongshan Grottoes'. 'With Dunhuang murals in the north and Jianchuan grottoes in the south', this is the place referred to.
🔺Tips3:
You can stay in Shaxi Ancient Town, where it is said there is morning mist. When traveling, it's more convenient and hygienic to bring disposable underwear and bath towels pillowcases.

The Hidden Ancient City in Yunnan, the Charm of Jianchuan County in Dali Prefecture
'The Place with Wind' 🔥 has popularized Dali and Shaxi Ancient Town, yet the ancient city of Jianchuan in the same Dali Prefecture remains quietly heartbreaking. 🚘 Departing from Xiaguan in Dali, a self-drive trip only requires 130 kilometers, approximately 2 hours to arrive. Although not well-known to the public, 🍃 this place is filled with historical ambience and cultural heritage.
Upon entering Jianchuan, you will be attracted by its simplicity and tranquility 🔔. The ancient streets are clean, lined with rows of old houses, each with babbling water in front. 🔑 Moreover, the doors of these ancient houses are adorned with couplets and New Year paintings created by the owners themselves, 💡 which are both creative and full of life.
🔎 Highlights of the ancient city:
📍 Jingfeng Park, a treasure park that integrates ancient culture and the local humanistic spirit, with a museum inside that takes you deep into the history and culture of Jianchuan 🎯.
📍 Ximen Street, a street concentrated with ancient houses, where you can stroll and feel the leisurely life of the locals 🏡.
📍 Jian Lake, located to the south of the ancient city, is more petite and exquisite compared to the vastness of Erhai Lake, yet it is also more serene and beautiful, like a dazzling pearl embedded in this small city 🌠.

Dali Travel | Dali actually hides such an ancient city, and it is Jianchuan
| Dali actually hides such an ancient city, and it is Jianchuan. Come to the ancient city of Jianchuan in Dali to experience the slow time and enjoy the life of travel and residence.
🌟 Highlights:
It is 100 kilometers away from the city center, why does it attract me? There are not so many tourists, and there are Bai people living here, who have experienced more than 600 years and still retain many of the architectural styles of that time.
🏨 Scenic Environment
About Jianchuan: Jianchuan Ancient City began in the last years of the Yuan Dynasty (1341—1370 AD), with a history of more than 650 years. The original ancient city walls were majestic and spectacular. The ancient city walls and the Qiaolou were demolished in 1952. Now the four gates, moats, and drawbridges still exist, and the foundations of the ancient city walls are clearly visible. The street and alley road layout built during the Ming Dynasty remains unchanged, the scale remains unchanged, the pattern remains unchanged, and despite the vicissitudes of time, the ancient appearance is still there. The residential buildings in the ancient city are very characteristic, with more than 40 Ming Dynasty buildings still preserved, among which 21 courtyards are completely preserved, and 146 Qing Dynasty buildings are still preserved, with the rest being civil structures from the Republic of China to the 1960s. The preservation of ancient residential buildings accounts for more than 90% of the total number of residential buildings in the city. This place is also a national key cultural relics protection unit.
🚉 Transportation Strategy:
You can take a taxi from the downtown area of Dali, which costs 200-300 yuan, or you can rent a car for a self-driving tour, both of which are quite convenient.
⏳ Play & Check-in
There is a square in the middle, with a tower on the stage, take a photo from a distance facing the main stage, leave a memory. There are also streets, accompanied by light and shadow, which are also very beautiful.
💰 Average Consumption:
There are not many delicacies here, because there are not many tourists, but the prices are very affordable. It is also where the locals go to eat, and the prices are very cheap.
Overall, Jianchuan is a great place for tourism.

Jianchuan Ancient Town | A place of tranquility
A place of tranquility. It appears suddenly at the turn of the old street's stone-paved road
An old
Living
House with glowing flowers
The couplets are its way of speaking
The door gods probably love it too, guarding this courtyard
This household
Always attracted by the old city and ancient trees
As if harboring all the affections
Strong enough to stand against this fast-paced material world
With almost no tourists, the restrained charm of Jianchuan Ancient Town is just right. After parking the RV, I step on the electric skateboard, sling the backpack over my shoulders, and take the dog for a walk around the ancient town. I buy two crispy mushroom buns from the fragrant bun shop; the owner is kind-faced, enthusiastic, and shy. The buns are delicious; two is too few. Walking back, the bun shop has already closed. This feeling, as if I'm at my own doorstep wherever I am, as if I'm a strangely dressed local anywhere, this is also good.
On the day I left Shaxi, my friend still asked me to stay for a few more days, saying that the Prince's Meeting was about to start. Although I was tempted, my heart still wanted to leave. I've always been interested in various folk customs and wanted to see the Prince's Meeting, but I felt it was time to head to Jianchuan. Unexpectedly, I encountered the Prince's Meeting ceremonies and the deity procession three times in Jianchuan Ancient Town; it seemed like the greatest arrangement by fate. But I heard that the Prince's Meeting is about childbirth for women, which seems to have little to do with me anymore.
In the past, I wished for a thousand-year-old tree in front of my house.
Now, as a person destined to wander with the wind-fire wheels of life, I follow fate. Desires can always be fulfilled from a different perspective; so now, wherever there is an ancient tree, that's where I'll sleep. Jianchuan Ancient Town

The ancient city of Jianchuan, which is ignored but has unexpected gains
After checking out from Shaxi, I squeezed out a few hours and decided to take a look at the nearby ancient city of Jianchuan. When I was planning the strategy before, I found that there are many such unpopular small cities in Yunnan, which are original and ordinary, but often surprise people.
The buildings in the ancient city are very beautiful, without so many shops, most of them are still residential houses, and residents will raise flowers and grass in front of their doors, park their own motorcycles, and often see iron generals guarding the door, cold and clear.
In fact, the architecture of Jianchuan Ancient City is very worth seeing. The streets and alleys built in the Ming Dynasty have not changed their direction, scale, or layout to this day. They have experienced vicissitudes of life and still retain their ancient appearance. The ancient city still retains more than 40 Ming Dynasty buildings, of which 21 courtyards are preserved intact, and 146 Qing Dynasty buildings are still preserved, and the rest are civil structures from the Republic of China to the 1960s. The preservation of ancient residential buildings accounts for more than 90% of the total number of residential buildings in the city.
The ancient alleys of the West Gate and South Gate in the city are secluded, with many ancient houses, such as the He's house with seven curved alleys and four courtyards and five patios, the Zhang's house of the Ming Dynasty in Wuma Square, Zhao Fan's former residence "Guanglu's Mansion", the original ancient Qiaolou "Ming Jianwei General's Mansion" Lu's house, Zhao's house at the West Gate, San Su Yuan and Yang's Mansion at the South Gate, Zhou Zhongyue, Zhao Shiming's former residence, Zhang Zizhai, Eugen's former residence, etc., and the ancient architecture of the Ming Dynasty Zhaozong Temple at the West Gate, its archway is uniquely shaped and famous for three miles; its main hall is basically intact and has a high preservation value.
Jianchuan County Government is now obviously preparing to recommend Jianchuan to everyone. The main street leading to Jianyang Tower is now building a cultural block, and I really like the number axis design on the road surface about the Tea Horse Ancient Road and the Silk Road. Although the Jianchuan landmark Jianyang Tower is modernly restored, it undertakes the practical function of the "National Local Chronicles Museum South Silk Road Museum". Here, you can not only appreciate the architecture, check in and take photos, but also increase your knowledge and refresh your cognition. The exhibition layout is very thoughtful, clever and flexible, not boring, perfectly combining modern technology with academic research, I can't help but thumbs up👍! Standing on the top floor of the exhibition, you can also open the window to overlook the whole city, with a great view.

I recommend this hidden gem of a small city more than Dali and Lijiang
Explore the hidden gem of Jianchuan, a small city between Dali and Lijiang. It has history, scenery, and culture.

Recommendation for a less popular ancient city during the Spring Festival - Jianchuan Ancient City
Will Dali be crowded during the Spring Festival? If you are in Dali Ancient City or Shaxi Ancient Town, it might indeed be crowded. However, not far from Shaxi Ancient Town, there is an ancient town worth visiting. The flow of people here is not large, and it is relatively primitive. That is Jianchuan Ancient City.
The entire ancient city is not very large, but it is full of life. If you observe carefully, its vitality is manifested to the extreme.
1. There will be a morning market on weekend mornings. Before dawn, grandparents will bring things to occupy a place. They bring things carefully prepared at home for sale.
2. Every household will post festive couplets at the door. This is very common in northern cities, but they rarely post the word 'Fu' on the door, instead, they post hand-painted pictures.
3. There are many small alleys worth exploring. Many of these alleys are old houses that can make us feel the past of this ancient town.
4. If you like to eat rice noodles or rice noodles, don't miss the double cap here.
The ancient town is free and open 24 hours a day. However, there is a very large museum in the middle of the ancient town. If you want to visit, avoid Mondays. And come here before 4:00.

Dali is not just about Shaxi, this ancient town and this lake are more worth it!
Many people are swiped by Shaxi in the windy places in Dali, but they don't know that the "Jianchuan" next to it is a more quiet, more ancient, and more Bai place, and it existed in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with a deeper historical background.
Jianchuan Ancient Town, Jian Lake
🚗 It takes about 2 hours to drive from the city
- The ancient town has a market, all kinds of local specialties, food and drink, daily necessities, the price is very reasonable, but it is not clear whether it is available every day
- There are not many people in the ancient town, very leisurely and simple
- There is a Fangzhi Museum Silk Road Museum, 🆓 no tickets, more digital and modern display of the role played by Jianchuan in the history of the Silk Road
- Jianyang Building is a central square, the 3rd floor is an excellent position overlooking Jianchuan Ancient City
- Jianchuan actually produced a lot of literati and scholars, look at the archway and Su Family Courtyard
- The double boiled dumplings and rice noodles in the ancient town taste good, the one I went to is called Yangji
- The nearby Jian Lake is very beautiful at sunset, especially in late autumn

Jianchuan| Travel Guide
If it comes to antiquity, no ancient city in Yunnan can match it
Jianchuan, formerly known as Yidu (Naxi language, meaning the southern gate) Nanzhao set up Jianchuan Jiedu as the beginning of administrative establishment, and it has a history of more than 1300 years of city construction.
The sword points to the universe, and the river flows endlessly.
"Jianchuan" its name, sounds very "rivers and lakes".
Here, with the momentum of one lake, three mountains, and two cities, famous carvings, famous songs, celebrities, famous food... intangible cultural heritage are all colorful.
🔥Jian Lake
The most representative typical wetland on the northwestern plateau of Yunnan, known as the "plateau pearl", is the mother lake of Jianchuan. This is also an important gathering point and stopover on the migratory bird migration route in China, and the wintering habitat of migratory water birds.
🔥Laojun Mountain, Shibaoshan, Qianshi Mountain
👣Laojun Mountain is one of the eight major areas of the world natural heritage "Three Parallel Rivers", known as the "ancestor of Yunnan Mountain" by the historical community, with the high-altitude glacial lake known as the ninety-nine dragon pools, it is a mysterious primitive forest park.
👣Shibaoshan, the mountain is as its name suggests, with stone as treasure, even the "miracle" of "stone blooming", in 1986 it was listed as the first batch of national key scenic spots.
In the hinterland of Shibaoshan, there is a stone cave known as the "southern sky treasure"-Shibaoshan Grottoes. There are 16 caves, about a hundred statues, most of which are works from the Nanzhao Dali period, which is a history of Nanzhao Dali carved on "stone".
👣Qianshi Mountain, famous for its more than 3,000 finely carved stone lions. They are in various poses and lifelike.
🔥Shaxi Ancient Town, Jianchuan Ancient City
👣Shaxi Ancient Town is a thousand-year-old town lost between Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La, the three famous scenic spots, and it is also the "last ancient market on the Tea Horse Road".
Stepping on the Yujin Bridge, coming to the side of the ancient town, below is the riverside gently stroked by the Heihui River. Away from the hustle and bustle, the scenery of the wilderness and the precipitation of time are hidden in the simplicity and quietness of Shaxi.
👣The humble old man, Jianchuan Ancient City. The 600-year history of the ancient city is not wasted, the ancient residential buildings retain the time, and the hundreds of Bai ethnic courtyards in the ancient city record the past of the Bai people.
🔥Famous carvings
In Jianchuan, we can also experience the inheritance of traditional culture and traditional architecture in the process of historical development, such as woodworking. Jianchuan carpenter is one of the two most important carpenter factions in Yunnan (the other is Jianshui, Tonghai carpenter).
Today, the Jianchuan area still likes to build new wooden traditional houses as residences, so the woodworking craftsmanship is completely inherited, and a whole set of building ceremonies from logging, foundation laying, column erection to beam erection are also well preserved, becoming a living fossil for studying Yunnan residential building ceremonies.
For an ancient city like Jianchuan, tourists are more suitable to be a quiet intruder, walking along the streets of the ancient city, savoring the couplets and prints of each household, and reading the story behind a door.

'Jianchuan', between Dali and Lijiang, is the last living ancient city in Yunnan
Jianchuan is an ancient city located between Dali and Lijiang, known as the last living ancient city in Yunnan. This small city retains many residences and shops from the Ming and Qing dynasties, with a slow and quiet pace of life, and prices are lower than other areas of Dali Prefecture. Jianchuan also has two stone carving relics worth visiting.
In terms of transportation, there are several buses from Dali to Jianchuan every day. In Jianchuan, you can stay in a guesthouse near Zao Street, which is affordable and comfortable. It is recommended to visit Jianchuan for four days and three nights, including strolling in Jianchuan, visiting the Shizhongshan Grottoes, strolling in Shaxi, and returning to Dali or going to Lijiang.
When traveling in Jianchuan, you need to pay attention to the following points: First, Jianchuan and Shaxi are small cities on the ancient Tea Horse Road, still retaining the traces left in the past; second, strolling in the ancient city of Jianchuan requires a pair of good walking shoes; Ming and Qing residences are still inhabited, and you can enter for a visit by knocking on the door and explaining your intentions; Jianchuan's special food 'Shuanggai Mao' is cheap, delicious and served in large bowls; Jia Ma Inn is covered with a large number of Dali's intangible cultural heritage - Jia Ma; you can experience the beautiful and deserted Ximen Street at night; Shizhongshan Grottoes is one of the most important relics in Jianchuan, the scenic area is large but still easy to visit on foot; the important relics of Shaxi are Xingjiao Temple and the stage, there are several relics of the ancient Tea Horse Road bridges outside the ancient town, it is best to go by electric bike or bicycle; Shaxi Pioneer Bookstore is not only suitable for taking photos and checking in, but also has a first-class selection of books and in-depth understanding of Dali's books.

'Jianchuan', between Dali and Lijiang, is the last living ancient city in Yunnan
Hello, this is a fun place in China and the world~ I have observed for almost a year, no matter how strong the wind in Shaxi is, it can't blow to Jianchuan next door. 'Jianchuan' is the white moonlight in my heart of Yunnan ancient town. In March this year, it became the 142nd Chinese historical and cultural city. This title came too late for Jianchuan. The small town on the ancient tea-horse road, the Ming and Qing residences that are still in use, the shops do not serve the nightlife of tourists, they rise at sunrise and rest at sunset, the prices are the lowest in the whole Dali state, and the two stone carvings are small but very informative. Hundreds of years ago, Xu Xiake 'loved its quietness' and lingered in Jianchuan, and now Jianchuan is still quiet and unchanged❗Practical information🚌Transportation tips: There are several buses from Dali to Jianchuan every day🏡Accommodation: There are several homestays converted from residential houses near Zaojie worth a try🗺Jianchuan four-day three-night travel route: Day1 stroll Jianchuan Day2 visit Shizhongshan Grottoes Day3 stroll Shaxi Day4 return to Dali, or go to Lijiang You also need to know ❿ important Jianchuan travel tips❶Jianchuan and Shaxi are two small towns on the ancient tea-horse road, and there are still traces left from that year. The horse team set off from the 'Zaojie' of Jianchuan ancient city in the morning, and arrived at the 'night market' in front of Xingjiao Temple in Shaxi in the evening❷Stroll around Jianchuan ancient city, remember to wear a pair of good walking shoes, refer to the following route to find ancient buildings along Ximen Street➠Jiama Inn➠Jianchuan Ethnic Museum and Jingfeng Park➠Jianchuan Qianshi Mountain❸There are still people living in the Ming and Qing residences, and you can enter for a visit if you knock on the door and explain your intentions❹Jianchuan's special food Shuanggaimao is worth a try, cheap, delicious and big bowl❺Jiama Inn is posted with a lot of Dali intangible cultural heritage-Jiama, even if you watch a circle outside the inn, you will feel satisfied❻You must feel the deserted Ximen Street during the blue time, it is very beautiful❼Shizhongshan Grottoes, the most important relic of Jianchuan, the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units. Depicting the court scenes of the Nanzhao Kingdom, there are also scenes showing the blending of ancient civilizations in this place. The scenic area is very large but you can still have a relaxed one-day grotto hike: enter through the main entrance, buy a one-way ticket for the scenic area, first reach Baoxiang Temple, visit and then take a bus to Shizhong Temple parking lot, walk to visit Lion Pass 9-11 caves, then Shizhong Temple 1-8 caves, finally go to Shadengqing 16-12 caves, there are very clear signs in the scenic area, after the visit, you can walk back to Shaxi ancient town❽The important relics of Shaxi are Xingjiao Temple and the stage, there are several relics of the ancient tea-horse road bridges outside the ancient town, it is best to ride an electric bike or bicycle to go❾Shaxi Pioneer Bookstore is more than just taking pictures and checking in, the book selection is top-notch, if you want to understand Dali in depth, you can find many books about the ancient tea-horse road, Dali intangible cultural heritage and folk customs❿I don't like Dali ancient city, I have always been puzzled why Jianchuan, Weishan these two ancient cities, are not on your travel list?

Jianchuan is not only about Shaxi - there's also the renowned Jianchuan Ancient City!
The Jianchuan Ancient City dates back to the end of the Yuan Dynasty (1341-1370 AD), with a history of over 650 years. The original ancient city wall was magnificent. The ancient city wall and Qiaolou were demolished in 1952, but the four city gates, moat, and drawbridge still exist, and the foundation of the ancient city wall is clearly visible!
The streets and lanes built in the Ming Dynasty have not changed in direction, scale, or layout. Despite the vicissitudes of life, the ancient appearance remains!
The long history has nurtured a profound cultural heritage here. But if it weren't for the huge plaque on the ancient city tower, you would never think that this small ancient city is one of the three major 'literary states' in Yunnan, with a strong reading culture and numerous talents!
