Kamikochi: From Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge
I recently had the most amazing experience exploring Kamikochi, and I thought I'd share my journey with you all. I started my adventure at Taisho Pond Station, where the serene Taisho Pond itself greeted me with its mirror-like surface reflecting the majestic Hotaka Mountain Range. The early morning mist added a magical touch to the scenery, making it a photographer's paradise.
From Taisho Pond Station, I embarked on a picturesque walk towards Kappa Bridge. The trail was well-marked and surrounded by lush greenery, with the sound of the Azusa River accompanying me throughout the hike. The air was crisp and refreshing, and the occasional sighting of wildlife like Japanese macaques and mountain birds added to the charm of the journey.
As I approached Kappa Bridge, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the Azusa River flowing beneath the iconic wooden bridge, framed by towering peaks and dense forests. It was a perfect spot to pause, take in the natural beauty, and snap some photos to capture the essence of Kamikochi.
For those planning a trip to Kamikochi, starting from Taisho Pond Station and walking to Kappa Bridge is a must-do. The approximately 3-kilometer hike (about 1.8 miles) is relatively easy and suitable for all fitness levels, offering numerous opportunities to connect with nature and immerse oneself in the tranquility of the Japanese Alps.
If you're a nature enthusiast or simply looking for a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, Kamikochi won't disappoint. Don't forget to pack some snacks, plenty of water, and your camera—you'll want to capture every moment of this unforgettable journey!
Happy travels, and enjoy exploring Kamikochi as much as I did!

Kamikochi
Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture. It is surrounded by the Hotaka Mountain Range, Mount Yake, and the Jonen Mountain Range. It is a small basin at an altitude of about 1500 meters and belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park. It became known to many mountaineering enthusiasts around the world through the introduction of the 19th-century British missionary and mountaineer Walter Weston.

Kamikochi: A Park in the Midst of the Japan Alps
Kamikochi is one of the most talked-about destinations in Japan in recent years. Why do people go there? Where is it located? Let's take a look at this review.
Kamikochi is located in the Nagano National Park, part of the Northern Japan Alps. It is naturally beautiful in every season. Last year, I went during the autumn foliage season, so this year I decided to go during the spring instead. The park is open from April 17 to November 15 every year (it is closed during winter when there are no vehicles running, and you have to walk in by yourself). The highlights include Taisho Pond and Kappa Bridge, both about 4 km in distance, walking along the Azusa River. On the other side is Myojin Pond, also 4 km away. If you plan to go for a walk, you should allow enough time and prepare appropriate clothing.

This bridge is the "city center" of peaceful and tranquilat Kamikochi. 5mins walk from the bus terminal, several hotels along with restaurants, shops and snack counters are located at each side of the bridge.
Further down (same side of the bus terminal) you can find free public toilet if you dont feel like donating 100yen to use the toilet at the bus terminal. Another 5 mins further is the nice konashidaira campsite.
Great place with a nice view! We really had a nice time, even though we walked many km. I will totally come again in the future, if i have the chance.

Kappabashi is the center of Kamikochi, and around the Kappabashi bridge you can find amenities like a visitors center, small restaurants and hotels, and some shops. This hike covers mostly flat terrain and requires little to no hiking experience.
If you want to do hike you can go to the Myojin Pond and back to Kappabashi via a different trail. This will take an additional 3.5 hours, and it is very much worth the trek. Myojin Pond is another famous highlight in Kamikochi with a tranquil atmosphere, a small shrine, and pretty foliage in autumn.

Japan Alps trekking for beginners
Kamikochi is surprisingly accessible and relatively “low effort” for a tourist to enjoy the full majesty of nature. Taking the Alpico bus from Matsumoto Station to Taisho Pond takes about 1.5hr and you can start the leisurely trek upwards, or simply continue riding the bus all the way to Kamikochi bus terminal where it is bustling with food shop and the amazing view from the Kappa Bridge. Take note the route is usually closed from November for Winter.

Japan Alps: Kamikochi, Nagano Prefecture
Located in the birthplace of the Japanese Alps, Kamikochi offers breathtaking views and access to your next adventure.
The natural history of Kamikochi is one of great elemental upheavals occurring over many thousands of years, though some of these were also quite recent. The mountains and valleys were shaped in part by glacial activity, evidence of which can still be seen in some of the most prominent peaks. Another major player in the formation of the area was Mt. Yakedake, whose eruption over 14,000 years ago changed the course of the Azusa River, causing it to run through the basin in which present day Kamikochi and Matsumoto are located.
Mt. Yakedake would again play a role in shaping Kamikochi’s landscape when another eru#asia tion in the summer of 1915 dammed the Azusa River, creating Taisho Pond. It should be mentioned that Mt. Yakedake is the only active volcano in the Northern Alps and still proclaims its fury to the heavens by constantly emitting a plume of smoke.

Kamikochi is located on a great RuralJapan route between Matsumoto and Takayama City. If you are looking to get away from the big city and explore the road less traveled, Kamikochi and its surrounding areas have much to offer. #wintergetaway

Visiting Kamikochi: A Scenic Summer Retreat in Nagano!
How to Get There: From Matsumoto City, it takes about an hour and a half by rental car to reach Sawando. From Sawando, private cars are restricted, so everyone uses buses or taxis. Since we had a large group, we opted for a round-trip taxi! 🚗 It takes about 20 minutes to arrive!
Tourist Spots: Upon arrival, you can pass through the parking lot where tour buses and taxis are located and enjoy souvenir shops and information centers. Be aware that the restrooms are paid, so make sure to have cash on hand. ✅
Food & Restaurants: We didn't use any restaurants this time as we took out food from Matsumoto City, but there were several places where you could enjoy soba noodles, soft serve ice cream, and craft beer.
|Stunning Autumn Colors: Kamikochi, Nagano (with Transportation Guide). Kamikochi will be closed on November 15, so I went on the 8th to see its stunning autumn colors before it closed.
The main attractions in Kamikochi are Kappa Bridge, Taisho Pond, and Myojin Pond.
My walking route for the day was Kamikochi Bus Terminal → Kappa Bridge → Taisho Pond → Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond → Kappa Bridge → Kamikochi Bus Terminal.
At this time, the night buses from Shinjuku and the buses from Nagoya and Nagano are all suspended.
Even the first direct bus from Matsumoto is full.
So I chose to buy a train and bus combo ticket in [Matsumoto].
✓ Take the train at 6:31 am to Shin-Shimashima Station, and transfer seamlessly to the bus to Kamikochi, [no reservation required].
✓ Be sure to [reserve] the bus from Kamikochi to Shin-Shimashima for the return trip.
Hiking route:
① Kappa Bridge → Taisho Pond, about 1h20min with photo stops, just in time to return to Kappa Bridge for lunch.
② Kappa Bridge → Myojin Pond, there are two routes, left and right, the left bank is farther, we took the left bank route and returned on the right bank route, the whole trip took about 3h. You will encounter horses on the way, be careful not to feed them~
Kamikochi is beginner-friendly for hiking, mostly boardwalks and gravel roads, mostly flat, suitable for leisurely hiking.
About supplies: mostly at Kappa Bridge, there are cafes, restaurants, and souvenir shops, and it is the closest attraction to the bus stop.
Kamikochi in autumn changes every day, with mainly yellow leaves, so don't expect too much from the maple leaves 🍁.

Kamikochi is beautiful and picturesque.
This time, I flew to Nagoya, and several friends coincidentally recommended visiting Kamikochi. So, I arranged a sightseeing trip on the second day of my itinerary. To reach the attractions in Kamikochi, you need to take a designated bus. We strolled from Taisho Pond, enjoying the fresh air and the beautiful scenery filled with green and yellow trees. The view is truly breathtaking, and I highly recommend visiting. My friends and I took many beautiful photos.

Kamikochi
Kamikochi is a beautiful valley located in Nagano Prefecture, situated at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters above sea level. Its location, halfway between Matsumoto and Takayama, makes Kamikochi a popular day-trip destination from both cities. If you look at the map, you will notice that Kamikochi is also equidistant from Nagoya and Tokyo, making the travel time roughly the same. However, since there are more direct buses to Kamikochi from Tokyo, traveling from Tokyo is slightly more convenient.

Kamikochi Lake, Japan.
🔸️ Hello everyone, today I'm going to review a lake destination in Japan. I'm sure anyone coming to Japan will think of this place, especially those who love nature, camping, hiking, or visiting lakes. It's a place with a great atmosphere and easy to get to. If you haven't been here before, I highly recommend visiting at least once. This lake is incredibly beautiful.
🔸️ Highlights of this place
The atmosphere is stunning with the lake nestled between mountains. You can visit all year round. There are drinks and ice cream available, but no food.
🔸️ How to get to Kamikochi
You can travel to Kamikochi by bus or train. If you take a direct bus from Tokyo, you can board at various stations such as Shinjuku, Tokyo, and Shibuya. The journey takes about 5-7 hours.
For those who want to save time, I recommend taking the Azusa Limited Express train from Shinjuku Station to Matsumoto Station, which takes about 2 hours and 40 minutes. From there, buy a bus ticket at the station to continue to Kamikochi, which takes another 1 hour and 50 minutes.

Kamikochi, located in Chubu Sangaku National Park, is easily accessible by public transport.
There are several ways to get there. You can take the Willer night bus from Tokyo or Nagano directly to Kamikochi. Alternatively, you can stay in Takayama and take the Nohi bus to Hirayu no Onsen, then transfer to another bus heading to Kamikochi.
If you take the Nohi bus, it will stop at several locations before reaching the final stop, which is the visitor center, allowing you to take short walks and capture photos along the way.
Kamikochi is especially beautiful in late October, so be sure to check the forecast to visit during the peak Koyo (autumn foliage) season. If time allows, I'd love to stay overnight to fully soak in the atmosphere.

Japan hiking at Kamikochi
#hikingtrails one of the best hiking trip in the mountains in Japan in winter ❄️. The hike started from a long stretch of trail through the tunnels which were closed for cars during winter. Although we parked at the nearest hotel it was still a very long hike through many tunnels to finally reach the forest. But it was well worth it. The forest trail was serene and amazingly peaceful. There are ropes to help guide you along the trail and the winter scenery is enchanting with rivers n streams and thick snow along the way. Very few hikers. Remember to start the way back early as the setting sun gets behind the mountains as early as 4 + pm .

An amazing Kamikochi 🇯🇵
#traveldiaries
Looking back on the history of Kamikochi, the names of Walter Weston and Kamijo Yoshimonji often come up. Weston, a British missionary, published his book "Mountaineering and Exploration of the Japanese Alps" in 1896 (Meiji 29), and introduced the Kamikochi, Hotaka Mountain Range, and Mt. Yarigatake to the world and praised him. As a result, mountaineering in Japan, which was previously a mountain destination for faith, training, or living, became widely known as leisure, and Kamikochi became famous.
Because of this achievement, Weston is still honoured as the "father of modern Japanese mountaineering". The person who guided Weston's way to the mountain was Yoshimonji Kamijo, a hunter from his local Azumi Village, whose name is also written as "Mr. Kamonji" in Weston's book.
The driving distance between Tokyo to Kamikōchi is 262 km. It takes approximately 3h 45m to drive from Tokyo to Kamikochi and there are 2-3 trains left from the Shinjuku station.

The beautiful Kamikochi in Japan is like a fairyland.
Kamikochi is located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture, at an altitude of 1,500 meters. It and the surrounding mountains are all part of the Chubu-Sangaku National Park. It is a holiday resort in the Northern Alps and has the most spectacular mountain scenery in Japan. This area is surrounded by the original forests of white birch and deciduous pine, and is famous for its beautiful natural scenery and rich outdoor activities.
Transportation recommendations:
1. Bus (Shinjuku, Osaka, Nagoya all have direct buses) can go directly to Kamikochi
I prefer the high-speed direct bus. When I wake up, I will arrive. The bus departs from Shinjuku at 22:25. I will sleep comfortably on the bus and arrive at Kamikochi at 5:20. Enjoy the fresh air in the morning, the mist is filled, and the beautiful fairyland!
2. Shinjuku Station-JR Chuo Main Line Express-Matsumoto Station-Bus/Taxi-Kamikochi,
Recommended attractions:
1. Taisho Pond: Formed by the eruption of Yakedake Volcano.
The water in Taisho Pond is very shallow and clear, and the fish in the pond are clearly visible. The mountain in the distance is Yakedake.
There are woods on both sides of the road. You will see monkeys coming oncoming, and then they will go up the tree, which is quite a surprise!
2. Kappa Bridge: A landmark attraction in Kamikochi, where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Azusa River and the surrounding peaks.
3. Volcanic lake
4. Tashiro Pond
5. Myojin Pond

The Wonderful Kamikōchi Area
#japantrip Came here during late October and the foliage was spectacular. Every turn, every corner and every sight felt so lyrical and poetic. The river was turquoise and the Japanese larch trees were tinted in an autumnal golden yellow.
The only downside is it gets relatively crowded at Kappa Bridge later in the day. We were lucky that we hopped onto the earliest morning bus and had a peaceful time around Taisho pond before the crowd arrives.
