Explore Kampung Ayer, a captivating water village that showcases Brunei’s rich cultural heritage. This sprawling community, built entirely over water, features modern amenities including mosques, fire rescue stations, and schools, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary life. Stroll through this unique village to witness a living testament to Brunei’s history and innovation.
My friends and I were guided by a local who also served as our boatman. He explained about Kampung Ayer and answered all our questions. We were amazed by the comprehensive facilities provided by the government throughout the village.

Kampong Ayer
Last weekend i stayed at Bandar Seri Begawan. The capital of Brunei.I had a chance to visit one of the must-see places here. That is "Kampong Ayer".
A kampong is a traditional Malay water village, where many homes are built on poles over rivers and waterways.
I found it to be a very interesting place.Real lives are living here.Fishermen, Villagers, Mosque, Schools, Play area.
I took the boat from Waterfront. It costs 1 BND or 1 SGD per one way.

A must visit when in Brunei. The world's biggest water village, and has been here since the 11th century. One of the highlights of Brunei Opposite promenade allows a very scenic view of Kg Ayer and also a motivating jogging route. It is really interesting to see an entire village (really many) all built on the water. It is a very different way of life, just across from modern Bandar main area. You can do a boat tour, but can also take a boat across for about $1 and then walk through the houses. Exciting experience of sight-hunting for the Probosis Monkeys, crocodiles and other wild mangroved animals
We saw some Kimodo dragons in trees, a fire station and some schools.

Great for a quick visit to an unusual way of living. This large village on the water is a testament to the imagination and perseverance of humanity. Very photogenic. Avoid hotel tours, hire the boatman directly. Locals pay $10 Brunei per pax,we negotiated a tourist price of $15. Worth the ride.

"Kampong Ayer" in Brunei, a floating village 🚤
It means a village floating on the river in Malay, and many people still live there!
It has everything you need, including a school, police station, and hospital.
Each house is connected by a wooden and concrete bridge, so you can go back and forth between them.
There are restaurants and you can eat ambuyat, a Brunei specialty 🥣
It costs $1 to cross from the opposite bank of the city by water boat!

Kampong Ayer - Venice of East
#weekendgetaways
Kampong Ayer, meaning “water village”,is built on stilts above the Brunei river. It is a traditional village built and inhabited since days of yore and synonymous with the Bruneian Sultanate history.More than 30,000 people inhabit Kampong Ayer, the largest water settlement in Southeast Asia, and travel about by boat or the extensive network of wooden walkways, footbridges, and boardwalks.
Kampong Ayer’s 4,200 structures include homes, mosques, restaurants, shops, schools, and even a hospital. We walked over the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha bridge and visited the water village.
You can find boatmen plying the river at the waterfront across the street from the Yayasan building. Prices are generally along this line, with locals paying 50-75% of quoted
- $1 to cross the brunei river to the water village
- $10 to roam the water village and with a view of Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha bridge by boat
- $20 to do the same as $10, plus ply upstream and see nurul iman palace, royal tomb, mangroves, and proboscis monkeys. This trip needs at least an hour of your time.

Shuicun is actually the residence of the wooden structures of the Brunei Malays who have been built on the river for hundreds of years. It can be said to be "Venice of the East."
There are not only 30,000 villagers living in the building, but also hospitals, schools, mosques, post offices, police stations, shops, restaurants, really basic living facilities on the land, all on the water, do not look at the appearance of the house However, in fact, the interior decoration of some families is exquisite and antique.
People living in the water village rely on water wooden speedboats to travel between land and water villages. The whole water village is connected by wooden bridges. Because it is built on the water buildings, it is easy to be corroded. Therefore, the government funds the facilities of the water village every year.

The most famous of Brunei is the water village. The only ones that connect the land and water villages are private yachts and water buses. Although some are isolated from the world, there are all the facilities in the water village. Figure 2 is the store after the low tide, and Figure 3 is the water school. There are so many docks in Figure 4. Not only the water villages, but also the mosques, hospitals, and police stations. Figure 5 is the boatman who carries me today. In the village, I can see not only the humanities, the monkeys in the woods, the crocodiles on the shore, The giant lizard on the beach, everyone lives in harmony. Figure 7 is a traditional fishing method used by many local people. It has not been lost, and finally sent several water village houses.
