The amazing Kenroku-en Garden
Having visited many gardens across Japan, Kenrokuen Garden is definitely my personal favourite! Located in Kanazawa, the garden is a strolling type landscape garden of the Edo period and is a true masterpiece of Japanese landscape design. It has rightfully earned its status as one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, having been designated as a national site of scenic beauty in 1922 and as a national site of special scenic beauty in 1985. Its name is derived from combining the six attributes of a perfect landscape garden: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, watercourses and panoramas.
The garden appears totally natural but it's in fact man-made. It has many unique features, including the oldest Japanese fountain, raised root pine trees, a plum grove, winding streams with cherry trees on both sides. Now in early April, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, and the sight of the pink flowers reflected in the still water is truly spectacular.
Here you can also participate in a tea ceremony, a wonderful way to experience the elegance of Japanese culture. A visit I most definitely recommend!

#Kenrokuen
Kenrokuen is a gorgeous and expansive park-like garden in the center of Kanazawa and it is the city’s major attraction. This beautiful park contains one of the top three celebrated gardens in Japan.
The garden was created over the span of several hundred years by the Maeda family, and today is one of the best examples of a strolling-style Japanese landscape garden. The garden offers something to enjoy whatever the season.
Kenrokuen is located in the center of Kanazawa City close to Kanazawa Castle Park. To get to Kenrokuen Garden from Kanazawa Station’s East Exit Bus Terminal you can take the Kanazawa Right Loop Bus from bus stop 7 or the Kenrokuen Shuttle Bus from bus stop 6. Both buses take about 16 minutes and the fare is 200 yen.
Kenrokuen in Kanazawa, the foremost of Japan's three great gardens
📖 Historical Origins
Kenrokuen, a garden that was first constructed in 1676 and underwent nearly two centuries of sculpting, finally opened its doors to the public in 1871. It was not only the private courtyard of the Kanazawa domain lord but also a circuit-style garden that combines six attributes of a perfect landscape: spaciousness, seclusion, artifice, antiquity, water courses, and panoramas. The name Kenrokuen comes from the Song dynasty poet Li Gefei's 'Record of Famous Gardens of Luoyang,' signifying that the garden's scenery possesses the combined beauties of the six ideal garden attributes.
🌸 Seasonal Changes
From the blooming plum blossoms of early spring to the snow-laden pine trees of winter, Kenrokuen showcases the beauty of each season. In spring, cherry blossoms form a cloud-like canopy of pink; in summer, red and white lotuses compete for beauty in the ponds; in autumn, maple leaves turn fiery red, lighting up the entire garden; in winter, the snow-laden branches of pine trees display the power and beauty of nature.
🏞️ Garden Scenery
The garden is home to over 150 varieties of trees and flowers, including pines, maples, plums, and cherries, as well as orchids, chrysanthemums, and swallow-wort. Pavilions and towers are interspersed among them, creating a typical Japanese traditional garden landscape.
⭐️ Special Recommendation
Don't forget to visit the oldest fountain in Japan located within the garden. Built at the end of the Edo period, it uses the principle of terrain differences to create a spectacular water jet up to 3.5 meters high.
💡 Travel Tips
✈️ A direct flight from Shanghai to Nagoya takes just over 2 hours. Currently, China Eastern Airlines operates 5 round-trip flights daily from 'Shanghai to Nagoya,' totaling 35 round-trip flights per week, which is very convenient!
🚄 After arriving in Nagoya, you can take the Shinkansen to Kanazawa. The Hokuriku Shinkansen Tsuruga branch line opened on March 16, 2024, providing even more convenience for traveling to Kanazawa~

【Japan Shoryudo】Fourth stop: Kanazawa
🏞️Kanazawa is famous for its production of gold leaf, with 99% of Japan's gold leaf being produced in Kanazawa City. The traditional technique that allows gold leaf to be thinly extended to one ten-thousandth of a millimeter has become a representative craft of Kanazawa, renowned both near and far.
🇯🇵🚇Transportation in Kanazawa
Our previous stop was Takayama, from where you can take a 🚌bus or a train🚊 to Kanazawa. If you buy bus tickets🎫 too late and they are sold out, you have to choose the train, which is not direct and requires a transfer in Toyama. Actually, it's more convenient to travel from Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa. Therefore, when you arrive at a place, make sure to buy your tickets🎫 in advance.
🏠Accommodation
In Kanazawa, we stayed for three days and two nights, choosing to stay at a chain hotel, Mitsui Garden Hotel, which has a large public bath♨️ and a laundry room🧺. The hotel is over 1 kilometer from the JR station, and a taxi costs 1800 yen. Although it's a bit far from the station, it's very close to all the major attractions, all within walking distance🥾, which is very convenient. However, I do not recommend the hotel's 🍽️restaurant, as it's more expensive than outside and not very cost-effective.
☝️Kanazawa's 🍽️Cuisine and 🛝Touring Route
🈯️Day One
Arrive in Kanazawa at noon, get the room, and immediately head to the Omi-cho Market to solve the food issue🍽️, about 200 meters from the hotel. The seafood at Omi-cho Market is plentiful and not expensive, with a rhythm that allows you to eat as you walk. 🦀Matsuba crab is a specialty, and you can buy live ones to be processed, which are fresh and sweet. 🍣🐟Fatty tuna, 🍥scallops, oysters🦪, 🦀crab, 🍤🦐shrimp, and various other seafood products are dazzling. The first day is spent indulging in great food and drink.
🈯️Day Two
21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art ⏭️Kanazawa Castle Park⏭️Kenrokuen Garden⏭️Myoryuji Temple⏭️Oyama Shrine⛩️
🌃The swimming pool at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art is a popular spot for photos, but other artworks are incomprehensible.
🏞️Kanazawa Castle Park and Kenrokuen Garden are together; you can reach Kenrokuen Garden by walking through the park. Kenrokuen Garden is one of the three great gardens of Japan, but it's quite crowded. You can try gold leaf ice cream🍦🍧🍨.
🛕Myoryuji Temple, built in 1643, is also known as the 🥷Ninja Temple due to its many traps and mechanisms. Photography🎦 is forbidden, and the interior is complex, appearing to have four stories from the outside but actually has seven. It's said that a well inside serves as a secret passage to Kanazawa Castle. You must call in advance to make a reservation, and they can speak English or Japanese. The cost is 1200 yen per person. Preschool children👧🧒👦👶 are not admitted. There is a Japanese guide, but you will be given a Chinese guidebook, which is recommended. If you don't know how to make a reservation, you can ask the hotel front desk staff for help.
⛩️Oyama Shrine has a bit of a mixed Eastern and Western feel.
🈯️Day Three
🚦Higashi Chaya District
There are three Chaya districts: Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya District, and Kazuemachi Chaya District. Inside, there are many places to enjoy tea, shops, and you can buy local specialty souvenirs, many of which are regionally limited.

Kanazawa’s Elegant Kenrokuen
Take a leisurely stroll among the pathways of Kanazawa’s Kenrokuen and breathe in the fresh air and serene surroundings of its wonderful gardens.
The lush backdrop makes for plenty of wonderful instagrammable moments to remember the visit by.
Do drop by the traditional tea house located not far from the main garden entrance for a not to be missed culturally immersive experience.
Kanazawa Castle next door adds to the overall experience.
On the way back take the time to browse the very many local artisanal shops along the street back to downtown Kanazawa for the very many wonderful works of art to take back home with you:

I thought Kyoto was beautiful, until I went to Kanazawa
I always thought Kanazawa was a miniature version of Kyoto
But after actually coming here, you'll find that Kanazawa is just Kanazawa
Attracted by the scenery here, touched by the people here
Not losing to Tokyo's fashion, nor Kyoto's elegance
🌈There are really many must-visit spots in Kanazawa
The Three Chaya Districts
Kanazawa boasts three major chaya districts: Higashi Chaya District, Nishi Chaya District, and Kazue-machi Chaya District, all of which have been preserved since the Edo period.
Gold Leaf Ice Cream
Even Ishihara Satomi disguised herself to come to Kanazawa for ice cream. Locals like to sprinkle some gold leaf on top, and the most famous of these is the gold leaf ice cream.
Kanazawa Umimirai Library
Japan is full of libraries, but among them, with its distinctive character and texture, and even more so as a pilgrimage site that tourists must visit, is this one in Kanazawa.
The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
The most unique feature is of course a swimming pool that you can only photograph and not swim in. Visitors strike various poses for photos, pretending to be in a real underwater world.
Kenrokuen Garden
Kanazawa also has Kenrokuen Garden, which is the foremost of Japan's three most celebrated gardens. Its scenery is completely different in each of the four seasons, with winter snow and spring plum blossoms being particularly revered.
Omicho Market
Tokyo has Tsukiji Market, Kyoto has Nishiki Market, and naturally, Kanazawa has its own "kitchen," which is the Omicho Market.
🚗Transportation Routes
From Tokyo, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen Kagayaki and Hakutaka trains via Nagano Station and Toyama Station, about 2 hours
From Osaka and Kyoto, take the JR Thunderbird Limited Express train. About 2 and a half hours
From Nagoya, take the JR Shirasagi Limited Express train, about 3 hours, and you can also take the Shoryudo route

One of the three most famous gardens in Japan
Kenroku Garden, with its long and glorious history, is one of the main centers of attraction in Kanazawa. The Maeda clan spent several hundred years creating it. Now it is an exemplary Japanese-style garden for walking. There is something to admire here at any time of the year.
"Kenroku-en" means "a garden with six advantages": spacious, allowing you to stay in solitude, artfully equipped, corresponding to the spirit of antiquity, offering to admire beautiful panoramas and streams of water. Not every garden can boast of such characteristics.

To find the symbol of the garden — the Kotojitoro lantern on two supports
How to get there
Kanazawa Station is easily accessible by the circular bus route or the Kenrokuen shuttle, which departs from the east exit. The shuttle ride takes 20 minutes and costs 200 yen.
If you have a JR Rail travel card, you can use one of its buses to Corimbo. Buses leave up to three times an hour.
Past and present
Kenroku-en was once the private garden of the Maeda clan, which occupied Kanazawa Castle and ruled the Kaga Principality on the territory of modern Ishikawa. In the feudal era, Maeda was one of the most powerful Japanese families and second only to the shoguns.
In 1676, Maeda Tsunamori laid out the Rentitei Landscape Park, which three hundred years later acquired all the "six virtues". In 1759, it completely burned down, but then it was restored. The park received its current name in 1822, and was opened to the public in 1874.
Time-tested peace of mind
Kenroku-en has everything that a traditional Japanese garden should have: ponds, waterfalls, stone lanterns, stone-paved paths, tea houses and artificial hills. Here you can spend at least a few hours in a calm, peaceful environment conducive to meditative practices.
Beauty all year round
Plum and sakura blossom here in spring, and in summer there are many other plants, for example, azalea. In autumn, the Japanese maple turns the garden fiery red. The tradition of admiring the scarlet maples has been called "momijigari", and Kenroku-en is perfect for such a pastime. The snow-covered pines by the pond evoke a romantic mood in winter. In January and February, the beautiful tree lighting turns on for a short time.
Yukizuri — structures to protect trees from damage under the weight of snow
Trees under umbrellas
In winter, pine trees in Japanese parks are often protected by something like an umbrella made of ropes, which diverge from the pole at the top of the tree in a cone and grab the branches from top to bottom. This construction is called "yukizuri".
There is now a museum in the villa, which exhibits dolls, paintings and illustrations.

The famous garden in Kanazawa
This garden is one of the most beautiful landscape gardens I've seen. I would say that the best season to visit this place is in winter.
Kenroku-en is located in Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan. It is is considered one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, along with Kairaku-en and Koraku-en. This garden was constructed during the Edo period by the Maeda clan.
Getting there:
Kenrokuen is a stop along the tourist-oriented Kanazawa Loop Bus which departs from the station's east exit (aka Kenrokuen Exit). The one way ride from Kanazawa Station takes about 20 minutes and costs 210 yen.
In 2024, I want to visit Yamashita park.

Appreciate the elegant aesthetics of Kanazawa, as graceful as gold foil and as rich as powdered snow
🌸 When the cherry blossoms in Kenrokuen Garden bloom beautifully, when the riverside lights of Asano River are lit, the whole city is filled with a romantic atmosphere. 🎐 The cherry blossoms in Kanazawa are also fleeting but extremely brilliant representatives of Japanese aesthetics, with rich craft experiences and humanistic arts intertwined, everyone is expressing their understanding of 'beauty' in a unique way.

Avoid the crowds 🌸 Nagoya's hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing - Shoryu-dori.
Introducing a great place in Japan for cherry blossom viewing during off-peak season: Nagoya and Shoryu-dori.
Recommendation reason 1: The scenic spot is less popular, avoiding crowded tourist attractions.
Recommendation reason 2: The cherry blossoms bloom late at high altitude, about 1-2 weeks later than Kyoto, making it suitable for off-peak travel.
🔅Nagoya is a big city in the central part of Japan, but there are relatively few scenic spots. Many tour groups will only visit or pass by here; in fact, Nagoya itself is a famous historical city (the castle tower with cherry blossoms is no worse than Tsutenkaku), and it is also a tourist route in the central part. The starting point of the road, along the road are Takayama Furukawa (the location where your name was filmed), Baichuan Township (the location when the cicadas cried), Kanazawa (Little Kyoto) If you have a budget of 3 days, you can walk through Shirakawa Township; budget 5-7 day can continue to go north
🔅This line can go to cherry blossoms and hot springs in April. If you are lucky, you can see the snow scenery; if you are lucky, you can see the cherry blossoms under the snow-capped mountains (Shirakawa Township is high in altitude and you can see the snow-capped mountains) 🌸There is a direct bus from Nagoya to Shirakawa Township. It takes three hours by car, you can go back and forth on the same day or you can choose to stay for one night
🔅I booked a B&B in Baichuan Village at that time, which is the real gassho house (the gassho building here is a world cultural heritage). It is the original grass-roof house and heating system), the advantage is that you can go to the viewing platform to see the night view (the latest bus departs before sunset, you can’t see the night view), and you can watch the sunrise during the day; we were lucky to see the snow scene, and the owner of the homestay also Will introduce a lot of folklore knowledge and teach us local musical instruments (but all in Japanese)
🔅 Most of the accommodation in Shirakawa Township of the tour group is in a hotel a few kilometers away from the village. The conditions are much better, but you can’t see the night view. I came here after watching the ancient horror anime "When the Chilling Cries". I was scared when I checked in at the shrine at night [JoyTears] There is a hot spring in the village that closes after 10 o'clock, and there are few people and it is almost reserved (because the guests are only tourists who live in the village). It is the most primitive and comfortable hot spring I have ever soaked in!
🔅Shirakawa Township also has a direct bus to Takayama. There are scenic spots such as Miyagawa Morning Market, Takayama Jinya, and Takayama Shrine. Take JR to Takayama Furukawa Station, which is the filming location of "Your Name"
🔅JR continues northwards to Kanazawa. There are Kenrokuen, a famous cherry blossom viewing garden, Kanazawa Museum of Art, etc., and there are gold leaf delicacies to eat. It is a very prosperous and western city
🔅 You can buy a pass for the entire Sholongdo itinerary. There are bus, JR, bus + JR options. It is a relatively small and rich route with high cost performance
Is the kimono photo not good? Maybe its just that the kimono you chose is not right
the details are all over the Kanazawa kimono tour
Is there a few girls wearing Japanese kimonos? Isn't it to look at the face to be praised? Wrong and wrong! People rely on clothes. When I experienced a local kimono in Kanazawa and took photos of the three major gardens in Japan, I deleted the previous kimonos.
This is where I walked through the best rental kimono
5 minutes walk from Kanazawa Station, there is a kimono rental store called [Heart Knot], 400 kimono styles and the latest hair style. You can mix and match, and the skilled craftsmen can transform you into a Kanazawa girl in half an hour.
The process of choosing clothes was shocked by the number of steps, because the kimono worn in Kyoto did not have such a multi-layer decoration, and then the pattern limited by Kanazawa was beautiful, and the elegant small florals were exquisite and elegant.
The texture of the fabric is very good, the price is small, but the upper body effect is excellent. I can't see the "visitor experience dress" at all, and it is "misunderstood" along the way.
The photos were taken at the No. 6 Park, the first of the three famous gardens. Although there are many Taiwan tour groups and local students in the hospital, it is easy to see from the picture that the entire park wants to find a exclusive wall to take pictures. Not difficult, this can be attributed to the excellent architectural style of the courtyard.
LiAn.
The Kenrokuen, one of the three famous gardens in Japan, is famous for its snowy winter. In the early summer, you will enter the Sixth Park, its lush vegetation, and the heron birds, stone lanterns, flowing water, etc. that stay in the garden, so that these centuries-old famous gardens are still unrelenting, and the ancients are exquisite. Gardening skills. The name of the Sixth Garden is from the Song Dynasty poet Li Gefei's "Luoyang Famous Garden". The old shogun of the Shogunate believes that this garden combines the famous garden conditions of "Grand, Quiet, Manpower, Canggu, Shuiquan, and Hope" proposed by Li Gefei. , so named as the sixth park.
Hmily_Song.
Our hotel in Kanazawa is on the edge of Kanazawa JR Station. The next morning, we will go to Kenrokuen Park. We will walk to the station and take the retrograde route of Kanazawa Kanazawa, and take the 20th minute to the Nikko Station.
Get off the bus and follow the crowd through a commercial street built on the slope to get to the entrance of the Sixth Park. In the car, we happened to meet a pair of Taiwanese couples who were also staying at Takayama Sangaya.
Kanazawa is their last stop, they will return to Nagoya that night and fly back to Taiwan. In our trip, Kanazawa was the first to open this trip to Maple. The name of the Kenrokuen Garden is large, and it is said that it is also known as the three famous gardens in Japan with the "Amusement Park" of Mito and the "Grand Paradise" of Okayama. The other two places have not been visited, it should be a place that is very deep. All over Japan will pack its excellent attractions, such as Kumamoto, which is now hot, and so on, all of which are successful tourism business operations. Therefore, the most famous Japanese attractions will be given the title of one of the major XX. It is famous, but it does have strength. This is an Edo-style courtyard. With the renovation of the lords of the dynasties, especially after the thirteenth generation of Qitai, Qitai built the Xiazhichi, the landscape of the garden was complete and broad. Because it meets the description of the Song Dynasty poet Li Gefei's "Luoyang Famous Garden", "Grand, Quiet, Manpower, Canggu, Shuiquan, and Wangwang", because they were named "Jiangyuan". It can be seen that in ancient China, China was still emulated and worshipped by various Japanese.
Maple.
The entire Kenroku Park covers a very large area and still retains the characteristics of the Linquan return-style large courtyard that is representative of the Edo period. Together with the heavy snow yesterday, the entire park is like a big labyrinth. The snow under the arm makes the tourists burst into exclamation, very funny. The earliest and six parks belonged to the back garden of Kanazawa Castle. After the demolition, it was a great blessing to open the park to the public. Sitting in this tea, sitting close to the water and fish worms, feeling the beauty of nature, this is one of the most popular ways of retreat for Japanese nationals, it is worth learning.
ColdAir.
Kenrokuen Garden is a very beautiful park, and is known as Japan's three famous gardens. It is also a special attraction of Japan. There is a Kanazawa Castle Park on the opposite side of
, and it is the largest wooden city building after the Meiji era. It was later transformed into a lush green park. I took a picture of Kanazawa Castle Park and walked into the Kenrokuen Garden. The water inside was very clear. The branches here were supported by wooden stakes, which did not affect the appearance, but rather featured. The wooden piles and trees reflect in the water, very nice.
actually belonged to Kanazawa Castle before, it is the outer courtyard building of the castle. The name of the Sixth Park is also derived from the "Luoyang Famous Garden" written by Li Gefei, a poet of the Song Dynasty in China. It is both grand, quiet, manpower, ancient, water spring, and the hope of six wins. Later, Kanazawa City Fans demolished the buildings in the park, excavated the ponds, added Qushui, and made the courtyard's lotus ponds coordinate and matched each other to form the courtyard structure that is now seen.
The whole park is full of green and oily sights. There are also many guide signs and reminders. For foreigners, it is quite unique. Some of the leaves are red, but they are not red, maybe after a while, here is another scene.
