Explore the Beauty of Ancient Architecture | Zhengding Ancient City, Shijiazhuang.
Low-key treasure ancient city "Zhengding", China's open-air ancient architecture museum, visited many times by Mr. Liang Sicheng, with many ancient buildings included in his book "A History of Chinese Architecture".
Longxing Temple, which has six national records, was built in the sixth year of the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty. It is a rare and well-preserved large-scale Buddhist temple complex from the Song Dynasty.
The inverted Guanyin on the colorful hanging sculpture of the Mani Hall is elegant, dignified, and serene, and was called the "Oriental Goddess of Beauty" by Mr. Lu Xun. Although the face has been restored and is no longer the original, it is still stunning to see in person.
The four temple pagodas are also of different shapes and are magnificent.
With Mr. Liang Sicheng's "A History of Chinese Architecture", I explored Chinese ancient architecture in depth for the first time and was amazed and impressed by the aesthetics and craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture. I hope that the existing ancient buildings will be properly protected so that more people can see the splendid Chinese civilization.

Zhengding Longxing Temple.
Longxing Temple was a royal temple in the Northern Song Dynasty, with the most popular incense. Today's Longxing Temple basically retains the appearance of the Song Dynasty. Three of the "Six Wonders" of Longxing Temple were built in the Song Dynasty, including the Mani Hall, the Bronze Guanyin Statue and the Wooden Wheel Collection. Among them, the Thousand-Armed Guanyin Bronze Statue built by Zhao Kuangyin is 21 meters high and is the largest ancient bronze statue in the world. The "Thousand Hands" part of the bronze statue is incomplete, and much of it was added later. The stone Xumizuo at the foot of the bronze statue is as tall as a person and is exquisitely carved. It is an original object from the Northern Song Dynasty and can be called the seventh wonder after the "six wonders".
The bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha and the hanging statue of Avalokitesvara, which Lu Xun called the "Oriental Beauty God", come from the Ming Dynasty. The clay statue of Guanyin is so well preserved that it is amazing. The earliest masterpiece, the "Longzang Temple Stele", was carved in the Sui Dynasty. The writing style still has the charm of official script, but it has pioneered Tang regular script and is known as the "ancestor of regular script".
"Visiting Zhengding Longxing Temple"
The ancient temple has been around for thousands of years, and visitors are amazed.
In the Sui Dynasty, the stele was also written in regular script, and in the Song Dynasty, it was skillfully chiseled.
It is difficult to save all the bronze Buddhas, but there is no shortage of Guanyin.
When Xiao Ran heard the evening prayer, I also turned into a butterfly.

Longxing Temple, Zhengding.
Longxing Temple, also known as the Great Buddha Temple, is one of the earliest, largest, and best-preserved Buddhist temples in China. It is an ancient building and historical monument. Located at 109 Zhongshan East Road, Zhengding County, Shijiazhuang City, Hebei Province, Longxing Temple was built in the sixth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (AD 586) and covers an area of 82,500 square meters. More than ten halls and pavilions are distributed along the central axis and its sides, creating a magnificent and well-arranged layout. It is a typical example for studying Song Dynasty Buddhist temples. The temple houses a large number of artistic treasures, including sculptures, murals, and steles from the Sui and Tang Dynasties. Six of these cultural relics are considered the best in China, and the temple was praised by Liang Sicheng as the "foremost famous temple outside Beijing." The Dragon Pavilion Garden, with its pavilions and water features, is integrated with the temple buildings, adding to the charm of Longxing Temple.

Explore Ancient Architecture with Wukong: Longxing Temple in Zhengding
❤Recommended Reason:
The myth of Wukong made Shanxi famous, but it wasn't until I visited Longxing Temple in the ancient city of Zhengding, Hebei, that I was surprised by its low profile. Despite being a popular spot for Ming and Qing emperors, it is not well-known. The concentration of ancient architecture here is rare in China.
Longxing Temple is a famous temple outside Beijing praised by Liang Sicheng. The Reclining Guanyin was praised by Lu Xun as the "Oriental Goddess of Beauty." It is one of China's top ten famous temples and has six national records.
1. Mani Hall
The layout of Mani Hall is unique, with a square hall body and a hipped roof on each side, forming a cross shape. Liang Sicheng said, "This layout, apart from the Forbidden City and the corner towers of the Purple Forbidden City, I have only seen in Song paintings." The majestic Mani Hall is a masterpiece of art and is included in the "World Architectural History."
Mani Hall also houses a national treasure: Ming Dynasty murals. Although many parts are unclear due to time, the overall exquisite depiction of characters is impressive.
2. Reclining Guanyin
Behind the Buddha statue, the Guanyin Bodhisattva statue is 3.4 meters high, wearing a crown and a red long skirt, with a slightly tilted head and a gentle smile. She sits facing south, back-to-back with the Buddha statue, hence the name "Reclining Guanyin."
3. Revolving Sutra Cabinet
Inside is not a deity statue but a wooden structure—a revolving sutra cabinet. It is a wooden cabinet that can rotate, with a diameter of 7 meters, consisting of a base, body, and top. In the middle is a wooden shaft over 10 meters long, praised by Liang Sicheng as a "masterpiece of wooden architecture."
4. Longzang Temple Stele
Known as the "ancestor of regular script" and "the first stele of the Sui Dynasty," it inherits the charm of the Northern and Southern Dynasties and opens the way for early Tang calligraphy. It plays a transitional role in the evolution from clerical to regular script.
5. Great Compassion Pavilion
It houses a thousand-hand Guanyin, 21.3 meters high, the largest ancient bronze statue in China and the tallest ancient bronze statue in the world, known as the "Great Buddha Temple."
This Buddha has 42 hands, with one pair clasped in front of the chest and 40 hands radiating behind, each holding a ritual object (all 40 hands were reinstalled with wooden arms during the Republic of China). It is said that each hand and eye has 25 powers, and multiplying 40 hands by 25 results in a thousand hands and eyes, hence the name "Thousand-Hand Thousand-Eye Guanyin."
6. Pilu Hall
Originally the main hall of Chongyin Temple, one of the eight major temples in Zhengding, built during the Ming Wanli period (1573-1620). In 1959, due to the temple's dilapidation, it was relocated to Longxing Temple for protection. Inside is a Ming Dynasty bronze Pilu Buddha statue, 6.42 meters high, with three layers and four bodies connected, totaling 1,072 Buddha statues. This Buddha was made by the Ming Wanli Emperor for his mother, Empress Dowager Cisheng. It is a rare Ming Dynasty art treasure with high historical, artistic, and scientific value, a unique example in China!
Longxing Temple is large and fascinating, with diverse ancient architectural styles. Take your time to explore and savor the slow pace of history!

🌟The history of Longxing Temple can be traced back to 586 AD. Emperor Wen of the Sui Dynasty Yang Jian ordered the temple to be built in order to house the relics. It was originally named "Longzang Temple". After subsequent renovations and expansions by emperors of the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, it achieved today's scale and layout.
📜The earliest extant stele in the temple is the Kaiyuan Temple Stele from the Tang Dynasty. It records the historical changes of the temple and the social conditions at that time. It is an important material for studying the history of Buddhism in the Tang Dynasty.

🌅The glazed tile roof of Mani Hall adopts the ancient "trimming" process, which is colorful and shines in the sun. This process is extremely rare in ancient buildings and reflects the superb firing technology and artistic level.

🥙The history of donkey meat roasting can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty. It is not only a traditional delicacy in Shijiazhuang, but also a part of the local food culture in Hebei. Zhengding: Longxing Temple
I came to Shijiazhuang for the second time, intending to appreciate the style of the ancient city of Zhengding, especially the unique style of Longxing Temple.
Longxing Temple is very famous, a nationally renowned temple. It was expanded by the order of Zhao Kuangyin in the Song Dynasty and was originally named Longzang Temple. Just the ancient bridge in front of the temple and the glazed red walls tell its extraordinary history.
I first came to the Mani Hall built in the Northern Song Dynasty. Breaking through the traditional rigid shapes of Buddha statues, the reverse-seated Guanyin statue was praised by Mr. Lu Xun as the "Goddess of Oriental Beauty." Its eyes are recessed, so it looks kind and gentle from different angles. It is the most famous Buddha statue in Longxing Temple.
Walking further, I passed the Paifang Gate, which Mr. Liang Sicheng praised as a "treasure."
The temple has a precept platform, which is a place for ordination ceremonies. There are only a few in the country. If a temple does not have a significant influence, it is not qualified to have a precept platform.
The double-sided bronze Buddha built in the Ming Dynasty is rare in the country. Facing south is Amitabha, and facing north is the Medicine Buddha.
The Zhuanlun Pavilion from the Yuan Dynasty can be understood as an ancient semi-automated library.
The wooden Maitreya Buddha is carved from a single piece of wood.
The Great Compassion Pavilion is grand and majestic, three stories high, with three connected pavilions. The suspended corridors between the pavilions are very distinctive. Inside, there is a tall and solemn bronze statue of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin, watching over the world with infinite merit.
The Longzang Temple Stele is the earliest existing regular script stele in China, with a long history, known as the "ancestor of regular script," and is praised as the first of the Sui Dynasty.
Pilu Temple was cast by Emperor Wanli of the Ming Dynasty for his biological mother. The four-faced Buddha has a unique shape, with a total of 1,072 Buddhas on the statue, subtly corresponding to his mother's age of 72, showing exquisite design.
There is also an exhibition of Liang Sicheng's cultural relics protection history here, with Liang Sicheng's work marks in Zhengding and sketches from his youth abroad. I remember that the Tengwang Pavilion in Nanchang houses Liang Sicheng's manuscripts, and I admire him immensely. A great person is indeed great.
Traveling in Zhengding, I mention Longxing Temple separately because of its long history and the intriguing "treasures" inside. It breaks through the simplicity and solemnity of previous temples. Its exquisiteness showcases the cultural heritage of different eras, with Buddhist culture from the Sui and Tang Dynasties to the present, with inheritance, development, and innovation.

1️⃣ Mani Hall: Built in the fourth year of the Huangyou era of the Northern Song Dynasty (1052 AD), the main structure is a square hall with seven bays in depth and seven bays in width. Each of the four sides has a cross-shaped porch with a gable roof. The eaves are grand and sparsely distributed, with obvious curved ridges, side angles, and rises. It was praised by Mr. Liang Sicheng as a unique example of ancient architecture in the world, with high historical, scientific, and artistic value. Inside the hall, there is a colorful seated statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara on the north wall, with a unique sitting posture and vivid colors, praised by Mr. Lu Xun as 'humanizing the deity' and known as the 'Oriental Beauty Goddess.'
2️⃣ Zhuanlun Zang Pavilion: Built in the Northern Song Dynasty, the beam structure is unique. Due to the placement of the revolving scripture cabinet on the lower floor, the column network layout breaks conventions, adopting the method of moving columns. The eaves columns use the method of inserting columns. Inside the pavilion is a revolving scripture cabinet from the Song Dynasty (commonly known as the scripture cabinet), a large rotating bookshelf made of small octagonal wood, with a diameter of 7 meters. The cabinet above is double-eaved, with eight brackets, the most early example of brackets in China. The upper eaves are round with flying eaves, a typical Song Dynasty construction method, and the oldest and largest scripture cabinet in China.
3️⃣ Great Compassion Pavilion: The main building of Longxing Temple, the existing structure was rebuilt in 1999. Inside the pavilion stands the Great Bodhisattva of Zhengding, known as one of the 'Four Treasures of North China,' a thousand-hand, thousand-eye Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, 22.28 meters high, first cast in the fourth year of the Kaibao era of the Northern Song Dynasty (971 AD), with 3000 craftsmen participating in the casting. It was cast in seven sections from bottom to top, the largest bronze artwork in ancient China. The existing body of the Avalokitesvara and the two arms folded in front of the chest are Song Dynasty bronze casts, while the remaining 40 arms on both sides are wooden arms reinstalled during the Republic of China period.
4️⃣ Longzang Temple Stele: Standing inside Longxing Temple, it is the earliest existing regular script stele in China. This stele was carved on the fifth day of the twelfth month of the sixth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (586 AD). The stele head is 82 cm high, with the regular script 'Hengzhou Governor, Duke of E, for the country, built Longzang Temple Stele' carved in relief. The stele is 164 cm high and 90.5 cm wide, with 30 lines of regular script on the front, each line with 50 characters, totaling 1447 characters. The calligraphy is square and neat, with a rigorous structure, simple yet elegant, solemn yet not rigid, slightly revealing the charm of Wei-style clerical script. It is an important stele for studying the transition from Wei-style clerical script to regular script, first recorded by Ouyang Xiu in 'Ji Gu Lu,' and later praised by Kang Youwei as 'the first stele of the Sui Dynasty,' known as the 'first stele of regular script.'
5️⃣ Pilu Hall: Originally the main hall of Chongyin Temple, one of the eight major temples in Zhengding, built during the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty. In 1959, due to the dilapidation of the temple, it was relocated to Longxing Temple. In the center of the hall is a bronze statue of Pilu Buddha from the Ming Dynasty, 6.42 meters high, tapering upwards like a pagoda, with a gold-plated surface. The statue is divided into three layers, each with four Pilu Buddhas, wearing five Buddha crowns, making the Pilu mudra, and sitting in the lotus position. Each of the thousand lotus petals on the three-layer lotus seat is carved with a small Buddha statue, forming a pattern of a thousand Buddhas surrounding Pilu Buddha, totaling 1072 Buddha statues. The statue is proportionate, exquisitely crafted, with finely carved floral borders on the skirts, possessing high historical, artistic, and scientific value. It was praised by the famous ancient architecture expert Mr. Qi Yingtai as 'the most exquisite statue of its kind in China, a treasure of Ming Dynasty art.'

North China's Great Temple, Art Reaches Perfection: Longxing Temple (III) - Zhuanlun Zang and Longzang Temple Stele
Passing through the Mani Hall and walking further inside, after passing the Precepts Altar, you will see the third national treasure of Longxing Temple - the Zhuanlun Zang.
The Zhuanlun Zang was built during the Northern Song Dynasty, with a diameter of 7 meters. It is divided into three parts: the base, the body, and the top. A 10.8-meter wooden shaft runs vertically through the middle, and the entire weight of the Zhuanlun Zang is supported by the base needle. The Zhuanlun Zang at Longxing Temple is an original Song Dynasty artifact and is the earliest and largest of its kind in China.
What was the purpose of building the Zhuanlun Zang in ancient times? Firstly, it was used to store scriptures. In the body part, there is a square column and a plum blossom column, with a shallow and wide groove between them. The groove contains scripture trays where the scriptures are placed. Secondly, it has a rotating function.
In ancient times, many people were illiterate, and the Zhuanlun Zang helped these illiterate people, or those who had no time to read the scriptures. By gently pushing it clockwise, one rotation was equivalent to reading a scripture. It can be said that it combines scripture storage and preaching into one, making it a movable scripture cabinet.
The Longzang Temple Stele, officially known as the Stele of Longzang Temple Constructed by the Persuasion of the Duke of E, Governor of Hengzhou, is the earliest existing stele inscribed in regular script in China and is the sixth national treasure of Longxing Temple.
Erected in the sixth year of the Kaihuang era of the Sui Dynasty (586 AD), the stele is 3.15 meters high, 0.90 meters wide, and 0.29 meters thick. The inscription records how Wang Xiaoxian, the Duke of E and Governor of Hengzhou, persuaded and rewarded the local people to jointly construct the Longzang Temple.
The stele's title consists of three lines, each with five characters; the front (yang) side has thirty lines, each with fifty characters; and the back (yin) side has five columns, each with thirty lines.
The original author and calligrapher of the stele did not sign their names. The text ends abruptly at "Zhang Gongli, the acting adjutant of the Nine Gates," and since then, it has been traditionally attributed to Zhang Gongli.
The entire stele is written in regular script, with a simple and square structure. Although it is in regular script, it still retains some clerical script elements, making it a rare treasure.
The main value of this stele lies not only in its historical age but also in its value in the transmission of calligraphy.
It played a transitional role in the history of Chinese calligraphy, bridging the gap between the Southern and Northern Dynasties and the early Tang Dynasty, serving as an exemplary model of the transition from clerical script to regular script in Chinese characters.
Kang Youwei praised it as "the stele that integrates the Six Dynasties, not only the first stele of the Sui Dynasty," and later generations called it "the ancestor of regular script."
In addition, the tall glazed screen wall in front of the entrance of Longxing Temple and the Precepts Altar inside the temple are also of great historical and cultural value.
The glazed screen wall was built in the forty-fifth year of the Qianlong era of the Qing Dynasty (1780 AD). The center of the wall is a vivid and spectacular relief pattern of two dragons playing with a pearl, made up of thirty-six high-relief glazed bricks.
The screen wall, built outside the main gate, creates a solemn and majestic atmosphere.

The Sixth Marvel is the bronze cast Pilu Buddha inside the Pilu Hall, one of the most exquisite works of ancient China, considered a unique example within the country. This Pilu Buddha is made of bronze, standing at 6.72 meters tall, showcasing the highest level of bronze casting craftsmanship of the time.

Longxing Temple—The Artistic Treasure of Zhengding, Hebei
Before going to Longxing Temple in Zhengding, Hebei, I didn't know where its fame came from, only that it had many titles. For example, Liang Sicheng praised it as a unique example of ancient architecture in the world, the 'Upside-down Guanyin' hailed as the 'Goddess of Beauty of the East' by Lu Xun, and the tallest bronze Buddha in China, the 'Thousand-Handed Guanyin'. Since ancient times, it has existed as a famous temple in the Hebei region.
After visiting Longxing Temple, let me give a brief introduction:
Longxing Temple does not have a mountain gate. In front of the temple, there is a tall glazed screen wall, and crossing three stone bridges with three arches each leads northward, where the main buildings are distributed along a central north-south axis and its sides. These include: the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Hall of Heavenly Awakening and the Six Masters (ruins), the Mani Hall, the Ordination Platform, the Ci's Pavilion, the Revolving Sutra Pavilion, the Kangxi Emperor's Stele Pavilion, the Qianlong Emperor's Stele Pavilion, the Imperial Book Tower (ruins), the Great Compassion Pavilion, the Jiqing Pavilion (ruins), and the Amitabha Hall, among others.
Each building has its highlights: the columns and beams of the Hall of Heavenly Kings; the bracket sets and flying eaves of the Mani Hall, the Buddha statues of the Ordination Platform; the woodwork and arches of the Revolving Sutra Pavilion; the tall Buddha statues of the Ci's Pavilion; and those numerous, vivid, and lifelike murals, clay sculptures, all silently narrating the temple's past history and glory. Silence speaks louder than words, and not all who see may understand, nor may all who understand respond. However, Zhengding's Longxing Temple, if I had not come, if I had not understood, its beauty would still exist, only I would have lifelong regrets...

Checked in at the Five-Tai Mountain Spring in Zhengding County, Longxing Temple
💧Five-Tai Mountain Spring💦Checked in✔️ at Longxing Temple
📍Zhongshan East Road, Zhengding County, Shijiazhuang, Hebei
In order to catch a glimpse of the 'Eastern Venus' in Lu Xun's eyes,
I came to Zhengding County, the hometown of Zhao Zilong of Changshan.
Got off the bus at Zhao Yun Temple and walked to the famous Longxing Temple.
The Venus is in the main hall, the Mani Hall, behind the golden Mani wall.
The back wall is carved with more than 30 scenes of the South Sea and Buddha statues.
Mountains upon mountains, auspicious clouds winding, it's like a fairyland.
The colorful Guanyin slightly leans forward, sitting in the center with knees hugged.
Elegant as a fairy, compassionate as Buddha, majestic as a deity.
Liang Sicheng said: 'How full of human touch she is,
no matter which direction you look at her from,
she can turn her eyes to look at you, looking down,
as if wanting to converse with you.'
Photos cannot convey the overwhelming shock of the sculpture,
nor can they capture the gentle downward gaze of the Venus Bodhisattva.
The Great Compassion Pavilion houses a 21.3-meter-tall bronze statue of the Thousand-Handed and Thousand-Eyed Guanyin Bodhisattva.
Aside from the two hands clasped in front of the chest, there are 20 arms on each side,
holding the sun, moon, treasure vase, vajra, sword, and other ritual implements,
and each is adorned with an eye, a thousand hands to protect sentient beings, a thousand eyes to observe the world.
The huge Sumeru base and stone carvings below the Guanyin statue are incredibly exquisite.
In addition to the most beautiful colorful hanging carvings and the tallest Guanyin bronze statue,
there are also the Pilu Buddha statue covered with a thousand Buddhas and the revolving scripture repositories, etc.
Longxing Temple has witnessed the development and changes of Northern Buddhist culture,
and is one of the ancient temples with the most Song Dynasty sculptures and stone carvings still in existence.

The First Scenery of Zhengding - Longxing Temple (Part One)
I have visited many temples both domestically and internationally, but I didn't expect to be so 'shaken' by my visit to the 'Longxing Temple' in Zhengding this time. It truly deserves to be called the top attraction of Zhengding! With an area of over 80,000 square meters, you could wander around for half a day. The key point is that every Buddha statue in each room is worth exclaiming over! Take the multicolored hanging mountain for example, with its three-dimensional layers, exquisite and complex statues, and brilliant colors. It measures 15.7 meters in length and 7.5 meters in height. This relief sculpture art form, which combines sculpture with painting, miniaturizes the spectacular and lively scene of Guanyin preaching at Mount Putuo Luo on the wall. The Guanyin Bodhisattva sitting in the center breaks through the rigid style of religious Buddha statues. With its soft body curves and graceful and dignified posture, it is a superior work that interprets the secularization of Song Dynasty Guanyin statues, hence it is known as the 'Eastern Goddess of Beauty'. Also, because it faces south while sitting opposite to the direction of the main hall, it is also called the 'Inverted Seated Guanyin', one of the six unique features of Longxing Temple. If you look closely, the Guanyin appears so carefree and unrestrained. Even the Buddha is like this, yet we mortals often cannot let go. Alas, I still need to adjust my mindset . And then there's the wooden Maitreya Bodhisattva, standing 7.4 meters tall, carved from a single piece of wood during the Northern Song period, with a flame pattern halo over 8 meters tall behind it, symbolizing the boundlessness of Buddha's teachings and illuminating the earth. Such a standing wooden Bodhisattva is also rare. Don't rush to admire it, because there's still the 'Great Treasure' to come. The 'Samadhi Earth' Thousand-Handed Buddha can directly cure cervical spondylosis . Inside the Great Compassion Pavilion stands a tall bronze Great Bodhisattva, known as the 'Great Compassion Bodhisattva', which is 19.2 meters tall and stands on a 2.2-meter-high Sumeru stone platform. It is the best-preserved and tallest bronze Guanyin Bodhisattva statue in China. The statue was commissioned by Emperor Taizu of Song, Zhao Kuangyin, and has 42 arms, also known as the 'Thousand-Handed, Thousand-Eyed Guanyin'. Each arm holds objects such as the sun and moon, a purification bottle, a pagoda, a vajra, a treasure sword, etc. Unfortunately, the 40 pairs of bronze arms on both sides have been destroyed and replaced with wood, with only the two arms in front of the chest being original. Standing beneath it, one truly feels how insignificant they are. Take a bow, and may the grandeur of this Buddha's teachings drive away the demons of this world!

The Six National Treasures of the Millennium Ancient Temple: Longxing Temple (Longzang Temple)
Longxing Temple, originally named Longzang Temple and later renamed during the Tang Dynasty, is located in Zhengding, Hebei. In the year 971, by the decree of Emperor Zhao Kuangyin, a huge 42-armed bronze statue of the Thousand-Handed Guanyin Bodhisattva was cast inside the temple, and the Dabeige (Great Mercy Pavilion) was constructed. Subsequently, the architectural complex of the Song Dynasty with the Dabeige as the main body was completed one after another. During the Jin, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, the temple's buildings were repaired and expanded. During the reigns of Kangxi and Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty, the temple underwent two major renovations, and in the 49th year of Kangxi's reign, the temple was granted the name 'Longxing Temple', which has been used to this day.
From its inception until the end of the Qing Dynasty, Longxing Temple was favored by emperors of successive dynasties. Emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, Jiaqing, Guangxu, and Empress Dowager Cixi all visited, stayed, and offered incense to Buddha. The six cultural relics in the temple are considered the best in the country:
1. The Mani Hall, a unique architectural example praised by the ancient architecture expert Mr. Liang Sicheng as a 'rare and precious case'
2. The inverted Guanyin statue in the Mani Hall, hailed by Mr. Lu Xun as the 'Goddess of Beauty of the East'
3. The earliest and largest prayer wheel repository in China
4. The Longzang Temple Stele, revered as the 'number one stele of the Sui Dynasty'
5. The tallest ancient bronze statue of the Thousand-Handed Guanyin in China
6. The most exquisite ancient bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha in China
WESTLEY MANNING
The Ming dynasty clay Amitabha Buddha, gilded and dedicated to single-mindedly chanting the dharma name by Buddhist devotees
❤️ In Longxing Temple of Zhengding County, Hebei Province, after exiting the Great Compassion Pavilion and continuing northward, you will arrive at the Amitabha Hall. Built in the fifth year of the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty (1510), it was extensively repaired during the Qing dynasty. The hall features a single-eave hipped-gable roof, is five bays wide and four bays deep. As the hall does not have bracket sets, the entire beam frame is constructed by connecting large and small extra beams, purlins, etc., with the columns, displaying a style reminiscent of the Yuan dynasty.
🧡 In the center of the hall, on a 1.57-meter-high Sumeru pedestal, the Ming dynasty clay Amitabha Buddha is enshrined, gilded and magnificent. To the west, stone sculptures of the Eighteen Arhats are offered. The Buddha has a flesh bun and snail-like hair, long earlobes, eyes looking downward, is draped in a kasaya, with hands folded in front of the abdomen in a meditative gesture, seated in a lotus position on a lotus base, measuring 3.99 meters in height. It is said that Buddhist devotees believe that as long as one chants the name 'Amitabha Buddha' wholeheartedly, Amitabha Buddha will guide the chanters to be reborn in the Pure Land.
💜 Some compare Longxing Temple to a beautiful symphony with ups and downs, pleasing to the eye and heart. If the Great Compassion Pavilion is the climax of this symphony, then the Amitabha Hall is the subdued and gentle passage that follows the climax.

Zhengding Longxing Temple
I really regret it, I actually came here now! The ancient buildings of Zhengding Longxing Temple are really too beautiful, completely beyond my imagination. These buildings with a history of 1400 years, every brick and tile are full of the traces of time and the precipitation of history. The moment I stepped into the temple, it seemed that the whole world had quieted down, leaving only me and this sacred ancient building.
The architecture here is really ingenious, every detail is full of artistic breath. The unique form of the Mani Hall, the beauty of the colorful hanging Shuo Guanyin statue, and the exquisite bronze cast Vairocana Buddha, all make me amazed.
Moreover, there are six national bests here! From the most peculiar Mani Hall, to the most beautiful colorful hanging Shuo Guanyin statue, to the earliest existing regular script stele Sui 'Longzang Temple Stele', every place makes me linger.
In addition, Longxing Temple also has six major landscapes! The precepts altar, the Great Compassion Pavilion, the Gateless Temple, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mani Hall, and the Wheel-turning Treasury Pavilion, each has its unique charm. I had a very pleasant afternoon here, drinking tea while enjoying the lakeside scenery, it was really comfortable.

The architecture and statues inside the temple are really beautiful; if you have ample time, you should definitely take a longer look. Wandering around Longxing Temple, it feels like you've arrived at the Jinci Temple in Taiyuan, Shanxi ~
The temple was originally built in the sixth year of the Sui Kaihuang era (586 AD), initially named Longzang Temple, renamed to Longxing Temple during the Tang Dynasty, and in the forty-ninth year of Kangxi's reign (1710 AD) it was bestowed the name 'Longxing Temple' which has been used to this day.
Let me pick the most impressive part to talk about (official introduction): Inside the Mani Hall, the north wall of the trough is a Song dynasty polychrome clay relief of a hanging mountain, with over 30 Buddha statues on it. The most eye-catching is the polychrome Avalokitesvara sitting in the middle, commonly known as the 'Upside-Down Avalokitesvara'. The Avalokitesvara is 3.4 meters tall, with the left foot on a lotus and the right leg bent up, both hands embracing the knee, the body slightly leaning forward, the face is beautiful and serene, and the posture is elegant and dignified. Below the willow-shaped eyebrows, those deep and wise eyes look down slightly, forming an emotional exchange with the worshippers looking up (this reading comprehension, a hundred faints! ^_^), this humanized Buddha statue was referred to by Mr. Lu Xun as the 'Goddess of Beauty of the East'. During the Spring Festival holiday, while strolling in Jizhou, Tianjin, I also saw a similar 'Upside-Down Avalokitesvara' in the Dule Temple, but it was a smaller version.
