The capital of Guatemala is Guatemala City, located in the valley of the Central Plateau, 1480 meters above sea level, surrounded by volcanoes (including two active volcanoes), historically the site of Kaminaljuyu, an important site of the Mayan civilization. In the early days of the Spanish colonial era, Guatemala City was just a small town, and the city began to develop in 1775 when an earthquake destroyed the old capital of Antigua Guatemala, which became the capital of Western Central America. Guatemala City itself is not a tourist city.
