#travelchecklist
Moraine Lake, located in Banff National Park, Canada is renowned for its striking turquoise waters, making it one of the most photographed lakes in the world.
This lake deserves a spot on your travel checklist, so be sure to tick it off during your adventures.
The best time to visit is from late June to early September when the lake is free of ice.
IMPORTANT TIP : do arrive at sunrise when the soft morning light illuminates the peaks and creates a mirror like reflection on the lake’s surface.
The hike towards Moraine Lake is uphill, involves navigating rockpiles.

Moraine Lake is arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world. Blue-green water that looks like it couldn’t be real and snow capped peaks.
The Moraine Lake area also has several amazing hikes that all begin at its shores. Consolation Lakes, Mount Temple and Larch Valley are just a few of the options available. Don’t forget you can also canoe here as well!

By far, the prettiest lake I've been to is Moraine Lake out in Banff. Because the lakes in Banff are such a tourist attraction, you truly need to time your visits so that you arrive around sunrise when the crowds are at a minimum and parking is available.
One of the activities that people enjoy doing while in Banff is kayaking on the lakes. The cost is around $100 for about an hour of kayaking on a beautiful blue glacial lake!
Banff is quite expensive to stay in. You can also look at nearby Canmore as a place to stay to save some money!

Have you ever seen water this blue? Moraine Lake is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful spots on Earth. What makes the lake this color? Silt, which comes from the glaciers! It's essentially "rock flour" that catches sunlight and makes the water appear brilliantly blue. Travel tip: This lake is only open for 5 months in the summer!

Beautiful Blues in Banff National Park. Is Canada on your bucketlist yet? Lake Morraine is a must-see!

Moraine Lake is very easy to get to. Seeing the lake doesn't require any hiking unless you want to get to a higher vantage point. Then there are several logs to cross and big rock pile to climb up.

Another favourite lake of mine is Moraine Lake. This lake is surrounded by an imposing mountainous backdrop that will take your breath away!

Lake moraine
#traveldiaries Lake Moraine is a beautiful, famous lake in Banff National Park, Canada. It has bright turquoise-blue water surrounded by high mountains and green trees. The lake looks very amazing, especially in summer when the water is full and the color is very bright. Many people come here to take pictures, go hiking, or canoe on the lake. There are some trails around for walking and enjoying the view. Early morning or sunset is the best time to visit because fewer people and the light is perfect. It is one of the most beautiful natural spots in Canada.

Rocky Mountains | Moraine Lake.
I personally feel that Moraine Lake is even more popular than Lake Louis. Everyone who has been to Banff has nothing but praise for Moraine Lake. A friend who came back from Banff told me that after seeing Moraine Lake, there was no need to see Lake Louise.
The road to Moraine Lake is open every summer from June to September. From 2023, private cars are restricted. Self-driving tourists need to park their cars at Lake Louise Ski Resort and then take a shuttle to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise. The shuttle operated by Parks Canada is cheap, around 12 or 13 dollars. Children need to book tickets, but the ticket price is 0. Tickets are required because seats need to be reserved. Tickets can be purchased 48 hours in advance, which means that if you plan to go to Moraine Lake on Saturday, you need to purchase tickets on the Parks Canada website at 8:00 AM on Thursday. The boarding point is at the parking lot on the right side of the ski resort entrance. There is a green pavilion where you can queue up to exchange paper tickets. The tickets have a date on them, so don't lose them, as you will need them for the return trip. If you get off at Lake Louise first, you can take the shuttle to Moraine Lake with your ticket after you finish your visit.
There seems to be another bus from Lake Louise Ski Resort to Moraine Lake. It may be a bus operated by the ski resort, and it is much more expensive, I heard it is over 60 dollars per person. I saw a red pavilion next to the right side of the ski resort entrance, where you might be able to buy tickets.
When you get off the bus, you will see the emerald green lake. You can rent a boat and row on the lake for 168 dollars an hour, starting at 8:30 AM. In the morning, when the lake is calm and still, you can row a boat on the lake and see the distant snow-capped mountains reflected in the water. You will feel like you are in a painting, and I highly recommend boating on Moraine Lake.
You can also bring your own boat and row on the lake. You will need to carry your boat on the shuttle from the Lake Louise Ski Resort parking lot, which can be a bit of a hassle. The advantage is that you can get there early and enjoy the mirror-like lake for longer, as the lake will start to get windy after 9:00 AM and will not be as calm and beautiful. Also, if you bring your own boat, you can row for as long as you like.
Moraine Lake is actually quite small, and it takes about an hour to walk around the lake.
There is a small hill next to the parking lot. Take the Moraine Rockpile Trail up. This trail is only 700 meters long and is basically a must-do trail for sightseeing at Moraine Lake.
There are 7 trails on the Moraine Lake side, 3 easy, 2 moderate and 2 difficult. Choose a trail that suits your fitness level.
In addition to climbing the small stone mountain and walking around the lake, I personally recommend the Consolation Lakes Trail, which is also an easy level, 6.4 kilometers round trip, with no slopes. Except for the first few dozen meters of scrambling over rocks, the trail is in good condition. At the end, there is a lake, mountains and giant rocks to climb. When I went at the end of July, there was still a large snowfield at the foot of the mountain where you could have some fun. Just be careful not to twist your ankle or fall when jumping from rock to rock. Rescue is very inconvenient here, so take care of yourself. Bear spray is still a must-have. There is a bear warning sign at the Consolarion Lakes Trail head. This trail is recommended for groups of four or more, but of course, it is generally not advisable to follow the recommendations. Just go. Some trails are mandatory for groups of four or more, so be obedient. Also, mosquito spray is a must, as this trail is mostly in the woods and there are a lot of bugs.
After finishing a loop of Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, return to the ski resort and you can find something to eat and drink in the wooden houses. Through the wooden houses is the ski resort. In the summer, you will see a large grassy area with a bar on the grass side. It seems to be grilling something, with thick smoke billowing out. You can drink beer and eat food. There is also a gondola lift open. You can buy a ticket and take the lift to the top of the mountain. That morning, after walking for half a day, I didn't want to move anymore. I sat on the grass for a while and then went back.

Turquoise water of Moraine Lake
Moraine Lake is a snow and glacially fed lake in Banff National Park, 14 kilometres outside the village of Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada. It is situated in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, at an elevation of approximately 1,884 metres. The lake has a surface area of 50 hectares.
PLEASE NOTE: Moraine Lake Road is closed to personal vehicles year-round.
Did you know why lakes in rocky mountains has a turquoise color water? It is because As glacial meltwater carries sediments, it creates a suspension in the water, scattering light and causing it to appear blue. The combination of glacial milk and the reflective properties of the suspended rock flour particles results in lakes such as Lake Moraine and Lake Louise

The magical Lake Moraine in Alberta Canada
This lake is unbelievable. The most gorgeous i have ever seen in my entire life so far. If you go Alberta, don’t miss to visit this lake. I could stare here forever and will not get tired of this beauty.
You can go by taking the all day pass and by bus. That’s the only cheapest way to go. Otherwise you have to go hike. You can’t drive private cars going to Lake Moraine. They won’t allow maybe because of parking issues.

Banff itinerary 💙
🇨🇦Moraine Lake sunset hike to the Rockpiles (very easy and short uphill hike with a wonderful view of the lake)
🇨🇦Lake Louise for sunrise
🇨🇦Little Beehive or Big Beehive hike (in my opinion the view from Little Beehive is better and the hike is also shorter). There are also horseback riding tours which go there 🌲
🇨🇦Canoeing on Moraine Lake. It’s better to do it in the morning because you get to take pictures with canoes in the water with a beautiful mountain reflection. You also get to canoe while there is no wind as they shut down if it becomes to windy, which usually happens later in the day 🛶
🇨🇦Johnston Canyon to Ink pots hike. You pass 2 waterfalls and get to a beautiful valley with glacier lakes and ice cold river in the end of the hike. It’s definitely worth it to get to the end - putting my feet in the ice cold river was a highlight of this trip 😅
🇨🇦Peyto lake for sunset. Easy parking and there is an observation deck as well as a short trail to get under it and watch the lake with no people
🇨🇦Downtown Banff and Canmore are pretty cute and have a lot of good restaurants and shops. Our favorite were: the Wood, Banff flatbread and co, Graze and Old school bus ice cream 🍦

Banff NP lakes transportation tips 🇨🇦
🌲 Lake Louise: there are two parking lots and way more space than on Moraine lake. For the sunrise we arrived at 4:45am and there was plenty of space, however, I think it fills up pretty quickly after the sunrise and it might be not that easy to find a spot after 7am.
🌲 Moraine Lake: the worst parking situation is on Moraine lake. Parking lot sign says it’s full all the time even before 5am and parking attendants would not let you in until 30 cars leave the parking lot even though the parking lot is half empty. We were able to get in for sunset at around 9pm after making one more circle and trying again. I think the only way to get there in the morning is to use the shuttle (see below).
🌲 Peyto Lake: the least crowded of them all and almost empty parking lake for sunset.
🚌 There are two shuttle options to get to the lakes: Parks Canada shuttle which goes from a Park and Ride parking lot near lake Louise ski area and Roam bus which goes from Banff. Tickets need to be booked well in advance but there is a free cancellation option which makes it easier.

These were all taken over a morning at Moraine. We got there to see the stars at night. Then it got super cloudy as blue hour stared, before clearing a little bit for golden hour. Can you spot the rainbow? #awesomepic
