Stunning Semeru (Mount)
This was my second mountain after Gunung Kinabalu. We went here in November 2014. I was told it is the highest mountain on Pulau Jawa. Standing majestically at 3676 metre, Semeru or also known as Gunung Mahameru is still an active volcano in Indonesia. Recently it erupted in December and sacrificed around 57 lives.
Anyway, me and my friends enjoyed our hike to the summit. It was a challenging trail yet beautiful view towards the summit. However, I am also annoyed with the amount of gravels that got into the hiking boots. Some of my stops involved getting rid of the small stones from my boot.
As you climb, you can also see smokes and smell the sulphur so make sure to wear mask to avoid inconvenience. take as much pictures because the view is worth the climb for hours

Semeru Mountain
Semeru, or Mount Semeru, is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia. It is located in the subduction zone, where the Indo-Australia plate subducts under the Eurasia plate. It is the highest mountain on the island of Java. This stratovolcano is also known as Mahameru, meaning "The Great Mountain" in Sanskrit.
You will have a life time experience if you visiting Semeru, when you arrive at mahameru and you pass the Ranu Kumbolo lake, you will feel calm, peace and cool.
That is Semeru, the highest peak in Java. Prepare physically and mentally before leaving, including a health certificate from a doctor. Keep the area clean, never leave rubbish along the hiking trail.

My first time seeing a volcano!
My first time seeing a volcano! My destination is the "Volcano Capital" of Indonesia, recommended by both Lonely Planet and National Geographic.
🌋 Mount Semeru, known as the "Mount Fuji of Indonesia," is more highly regarded by locals than Mount Bromo. At 3,676 meters above sea level, it is the highest peak on Java Island. Unlike the desolate surroundings of Mount Bromo, Mount Semeru is surrounded by lush forests and villages.
[Itinerary]
Day 1: Arrival
✈️ International flight: Depart from China, usually with a layover in Southeast Asia, then arrive at Juanda International Airport in Surabaya, Indonesia.
🚗 Head to the trailhead: From Surabaya Airport, head to the trailhead of Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. You can rent a car or take a bus, which takes about 4–5 hours.
🏨 Check in to a hotel: Choose a hotel or homestay near the park to rest and prepare for the next day's itinerary.
Day 2: Mount Semeru
🌅 Hiking time: 5–10 am.
✅ Mount Semeru: Go to the viewpoint. The volcano erupts every 15 minutes or so, and the view is clearer after sunrise. You can have a cup of coffee at Teras Semeru, overlooking the volcanic cone and smoke. It's very healing!
✅ Sewu Waterfall: A dozen waterfalls converge in one place. Stay for 30 minutes to 1 hour. It takes 1 hour to go down and back. It is recommended to wear water shoes and not thick clothes, as the waterfall mist will get you wet!
Day 3: Mount Bromo
📍 Mount Bromo: Usually depart at 2–3 am, take a jeep to the viewing platform, and welcome the first ray of sunshine in the morning. See the volcanic eruption up close. Ride a horse across the volcanic sand sea and climb more than 800 steps to feel the shock of nature. If you have enough time, you can camp near Mount Bromo for a night and enjoy the starry sky and magnificent sunrise.
👉 Tips: Don't go to the viewpoint too early. The temperature is low, so it is recommended to wear a jacket/down jacket and a mask to protect against volcanic ash. Sunrise is at 5–5:30 am. Go down the mountain at about 6 am. The jeep will take you back to the entrance of the volcano, and the guide will take you back to the hotel.
Day 4: Return
Return from Surabaya Airport. Allow plenty of time to get to the airport, as there is a high chance of traffic jams!
[Travel Tips]
⏰ Best time: Dry season (April–October), when the weather is dry and suitable for hiking.
🎒 Preparation: You need a local permit to climb the mountain. It is recommended to hire a guide and book accommodation and transportation in advance.
⚠️ Safety: Mount Semeru is active, so pay attention to local volcano warnings and follow safety guidelines.
📝 Equipment: Comfortable hiking shoes, warm clothes, sunglasses, sunscreen, enough water and food. The road to the waterfall and volcano is bad, so bring motion sickness and stomach medicine.
💚 Health: Be aware of altitude sickness when hiking at high altitudes. Stay hydrated and rested. Have a nice trip!

SEMERU / MAHAMERU MOUNT
The highest mount in Java Island. The picture was taken at Ranu Pani. I decided to hike this mount after I watched 5CM movie. Its an Indonesian Movie starring Raline Shah. The movie is about Love, Friendship and Future. Ranupani is a volcanic lake in Ranu Pani Village, Senduro District, Lumajang Regency, East Java. Ranu Pani is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

Blessed with gorgeous panoramic landscape, East Java is home of spectacular volcanic peaks, with some of the best view points in Indonesia. There are four volcanic peaks higher than 3,000 m in the region. This volcanic activity has created a largely fertile area and flourishing agriculture in the area. Semeru, the highest volcano on Java, and one of its most active, lies at the southern end of a volcanic massif extending north to the Tengger caldera. The steep-sided volcano, also referred to as Mahameru (Great Mountain), rises abruptly to 3676 m above coastal plains to the south.
The summit push for Mt.Semeru needs to start by midnight. The reason for the early start is that Semeru, being an active volcano, has daily sulphurous gas cloud puffs by 10 am that are poisonous. It could be dangerous if one gets too close or the wind direction changes such that the gas cloud goes over the hiking trail. So by 9 am whether you have reached the peak or not, it is mandatory to go down to a lower level of the volcano to be at a safe distance to the gas clouds.
It is very important to bring a competent guide and porters when hiking volcano Semeru. They help to make sure you are on the right path, provide situational awareness and point out areas of danger. From Kalimati you will pass fields of Edelweiss the eternal flower, tight rough jungle and a section called the Last Vegetation. If you are a very fit, the total trekking duration is about three days, with complete porters and guide so you only need to carry your day pack.

Me
MT. SEMERU 🌋✨
I call it The Old Gray Man 'cause Mt. Semeru is all gray and is terribly old. It is gorgeous tho. Surrounded by desert, this old volcano stands ta together with Mt. Bromo in the Semeru Mountain Ranges. I was there. I stood and looked at these 2 beautiful creations and I was just mesmerized. To add to that, the beautiful Hindu Temple is as mysterious and mesmerizing as the mountains it is with.
