I decided to end my 25-day journey in Shangri-La. A long-held dream of experiencing Tibet and its Buddhist holy sites was easily realized in Shangri-La (Zhongdian County, formerly known as Zhongdian County, in Yunnan Province, China). From Chongqing, we flew over endless mountains, and the views were breathtaking. It was hard to imagine where the plane would land. But everything went well, and we even arrived ahead of schedule at a small, cozy airport. Thus began my adventure. I was met by a driver at the hotel, and we quickly reached the ancient city of Dukezong, in the Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province, China. At the hotel, they immediately gave me Rhodiola rosea tea, which eased my severe hypoxia (which is a constant problem here at an altitude of over 3,100 meters). They explained in detail how to use the oxygen machine in the room and offered to buy an oxygen tank to take with me. (This was very reasonable.) On my very first evening, I went for a walk around the ancient city of Dukezong. I strolled along the cobbled streets, inhaling the aromas of food from every direction. The city turned out to have many places to rent traditional costumes, which I later took advantage of, as well as many souvenir shops selling Tibetan knives and jewelry, postcards, woolen goods, tea, and yak snacks. I walked to the city's central square, Moonlight Square, and registered for a visit to Guishan Park via WeChat via QR code. It's free. There, at the top of the mountain, I watched in awe as dozens of people turned the world's largest prayer wheel. It was unforgettable! I also managed to participate in the spinning, praying for peace and harmony. After strolling around a bit, listening to music in the square, and snacking on local fried beef pancakes, I headed to the hotel, where fruit treats and a view of the park with the illuminated temple from the window awaited me. Having learned about the main sights and the best ways to get to them the evening before, in the morning after breakfast, I called a taxi to the most desired destination of my adventure – one of the most majestic and significant monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism, Gandan Songzanlin, a place of incredible beauty and energy. Founded in 1679, the monastery was built under the personal orders of the Fifth Dalai Lama. It became the spiritual center for the Tibetans of the Kham region and one of the 13 great Gelug monastic schools. The name "Songzanglin" means "The Resentment of the Three Bodhisattvas"—Manjushri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani—speaking of its profound philosophical foundation. Today, it's not just a museum, but a living, breathing monastery where hundreds of lamas study and practice, and we tourists are allowed to observe them, touching the sacred. It was a journey for both the soul and the eyes—to the very heart of the "Little Potala" at the edge of heaven. I spent over five hours in the monastery, walking and stopping on the steps, listening to the silence and prayers. Afterward, I took a taxi to another place of tranquility, a boundless steppe amidst a belt of mountains, where horses, sheep, and cows roam freely, and a dry lake reflects the mountains and sky—to Lake Napa Hai. There, I heard the silence, felt the scorching sun, and the steppe breeze on my face. And so I returned to my true self. Travel Tips: 1. Acclimatization: Take your time. Shangri-La is a high-altitude area. Take a day to adjust, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol. 2. Etiquette: Dress modestly. Remove hats and sunglasses before entering temples.
