Xinjiang flights are so expensive! Of course, you should visit both Northern and Southern Xinjiang in one go 😏
👉 This route takes a total of 13 days (including 2 days for round-trip transportation and 1 flexible day 🉑 for adjustments), covering the Northern Xinjiang Ili Loop ➕ Southern Xinjiang Kashgar/Pamir Plateau ⛰️
Suitable for those with tight schedules who want to check off both Northern and Southern Xinjiang in one go 💖
Not for special forces❗ Not for special forces❗ Not for special forces❗ Important things are said three times!
【📸 13-day Northern ➕ Southern Xinjiang Route】 (Route map on p2)
Day 1: Various locations → Urumqi, stay in Urumqi
Day 2: Urumqi → Kuitun, via S101 National Defense Highway, stay in Kuitun
Day 3: Kuitun → Sayram Lake → Guozigou Bridge → Yining, stay in Yining
Day 4: Yining → Tekes → Kalajun, stay in Kalajun Grassland Cabin
Day 5: Kalajun Hiking → Tekes, stay in Tekes
Day 6: Tekes → Nalati, stay in Nalati
Day 7: Deep tour of three routes in Nalati Grassland, stay in Nalati Town

Day 12: Tashkurgan → Kashgar, stay in Kashgar
Day 13: Kashgar → Various locations
【⚠️ Route Notes】
❶ In Xinjiang, it gets dark around 10:30 PM, the time difference will affect your schedule, and the attractions are far apart with long journeys, so be sure to leave a flexible day for adjustments❗
❷ If you feel tired during the trip, you can rest in Kuqa on Day 9. The reason for recommending Kuqa is: prices here are really low 😭, I booked a four-star hotel with buffet breakfast and lunch 🍜 for 290R. This is the birthplace of 'Naan', and there are many nearby attractions, making it a good place for a mid-journey rest 🌿
❸ S101 National Defense Highway: Worth a visit! Here's a navigation route for you 👉 'Urumqi → Qigu Bridge → Hundred Mile Danxia → Kentes Reservoir → Lujiaowan → Anjihai Grand Canyon', you can choose attractions based on time and road conditions, and if you encounter road closures, you can directly get on the highway❗
❹ Day 3 Sayram Lake ➕ Guozigou is highly recommended ❤️ If you have enough time, it's suggested to stay for 2 days, if only 1 day, be sure to start early as the journey is long❗
❺ Note ⚠️ For the Guozigou Bridge viewing platform, be sure to navigate to 'Guozigou Viewing Resort' to reach it, otherwise, you will directly get on the highway 🛣️
❻ Kalajun is the pinnacle in my heart, it's recommended to stay for 2 days 🙈
But make sure to open it correctly ⭕
👣 On the first day, go directly to 'Jiasagan' and stay in a grassland cabin or yurt
👣 On the second day, hike from Flower Terrace → Falcon Terrace (highly recommended❗), about 5/6 km, mostly boardwalk, beginner-friendly, be sure to bring a raincoat and wear a windbreaker
❼ Nalati is beautiful, but crowded 😥 Self-driving is 🉑, if you take the sightseeing bus, it's not recommended ❌ The internet-famous bridge is really hard to rate
❽ Kashgar → Kuqa can be chosen by train/plane
Limited space, specific car rental ➕ transportation guide in the next article 😭

One must visit the Pamir Plateau at least once in a lifetime, even if it means enduring altitude sickness
The Pamir Plateau, known in ancient China as the Congling, was traversed by the ancient Silk Road. It is located in the southeastern part of Central Asia, at the westernmost point of China, stretching across Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan. It is the convergence point of several major mountain ranges in Asia. 'Pamir' means 'the roof of the world' in Tajik, and the plateau has an average altitude of 4000 meters to 7700 meters, boasting many high peaks, with the main peaks all above 6000 meters. There are mountain passes such as the Khunjerab and Mintaka, which were important passages of the ancient Silk Road heading south to India, west to Afghanistan, and Iran. The moment you set foot on the Pamir Plateau, tears involuntarily fill your eyes. It's not out of sadness, but a tearful appreciation for nature's grandeur—beauty beyond imagination.

Touring Southern Xinjiang | Heading to the Pamir Plateau | Pamir always needs to be seen once
Some places, just hearing the name makes people love it, and Pamir is one of them. This land carries the snow-capped Muztagh, Gongger Jiubie Peak; it has Karakul Lake, White Sand Lake; there are Wakhan Corridor, Hongqirafu Port, and all these are centered on Tashkurgan, this border county town at the junction of three countries in western China.
In terms of scenery, honestly, I think it may be slightly inferior to the Tibetan plateau landscape, but in a geographical sense, this is a place that must be visited once in a lifetime. And the Taerman Wetland is the place I think can best showcase the scenery of Pamir.
Here, the blue sky, white clouds, snow-capped mountains, rivers and grasslands are perfectly integrated, presenting the most authentic plateau landscape. It is hard to find another picture that can simultaneously display snow-capped glaciers, red ridges, green pastures and gurgling streams. Each layer is a unique landscape and landform, but together they elevate this stunning scenery again. Southern Xinjiang is mostly desert, with a dry climate, and the Pamir Plateau is the same, but the Taerman Wetland is a rare plateau pasture.
Muztagh Peak, known as the father of glaciers, has very developed glaciers. The huge ice tongues scatter down from the mountain, and the distant snow-capped mountains are Gongger Peak and Gongger Jiubie Peak, which are also the highest peaks on the west side of the Kunlun Mountains.
"Today I have walked all the detours, and from now on my life is smooth", this sentence is absolutely a textbook-level tourism slogan. Whether my future is smooth, I don't know, but in Pamir, I have indeed walked a lot of detours these days.
There are many other places worth checking in, such as the Apricot Flower Village in Datong Township, the signboard of the Wakhan Corridor, the Bandir Blue Lake on the Panlong Back Tower County Road, etc. But I think all the attractions are more meaningful because they are all part of the Pamir Plateau. Pamir is always worth exploring.

If you haven't been to Southern Xinjiang, you won't know the beauty of Xinjiang - the Pamir Plateau
The mysterious Pamir. If you haven't been to Xinjiang, you won't know the vastness of China; if you haven't been to Southern Xinjiang, you won't know the beauty of Xinjiang.
Southern Xinjiang is not only a place to see culture, but also scenery. Southern Xinjiang has the White Sand Lake, which is half white sand and half lake, the majestic Gongger Peak and Jiubie Peak, the Muztagh Peak known as the 'Father of Ice Mountains', the rugged Panlong Ancient Road, the Bandir Blue Lake, the Yarkand River, and the exotic Kashgar Old City.
The snow mountains of the Pamir Plateau are so close that they seem to be within reach, and the emerald-like lakes change with the weather and angle at any time, everything is so beautiful that it makes people intoxicated ☺️
This winter, come to Southern Xinjiang for a visit.

Xinjiang Muztag Peak | It is finally arrived at the Pamirs
is finally arrived in the Pamirs, the westernmost border of the Chinese border, is also the southernmost coordinates of this Xinjiang road trip.
The car is driving in the borderland, walking in the thin air of the Pamirs, sleeping night under the Muztag Peak, suddenly feels that those who have been quiet for thousands of years, it seems that they have never been clean The land has happened.
Only plateaus, snow mountains, lake glaciers,
into eternity.

Pamir Plateau
Pamir Plateau, meaning "roof of the world" in Persian, is known as the Congling Mountains in ancient China. The ancient Silk Road passed through here. Located in the southeastern part of Central Asia and the westernmost part of China, it spans Tajikistan, China, and Afghanistan. The Pamir Plateau spans the southwestern part of Xinjiang, China, the southeastern part of Tajikistan, and the northeastern part of Afghanistan. It is a huge mountain knot where the Kunlun Mountains, Karakoram Mountains, Hindu Kush Mountains, and Tianshan Mountains meet. It covers an area of about 100,000 square kilometers. The high mountains, flowing water, wetlands, cattle, and sheep create an endless landscape...
The Pamir Plateau in China is its eastern part, located in the Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture and Kashgar region. It is bordered by the Muji Valley and Tashkurgan Valley to the east, adjacent to the Western Kunlun Mountains, and the Karakoram Mountains to the south. The northern part runs in a northwest-southeast direction, while the southern part runs in a north-northwest-south-southeast direction. It is 260 kilometers long and 50-100 kilometers wide, consisting of plateau mountains and high-altitude intermountain basins. The mountains are generally 5,000-5,500 meters above sea level, while the intermountain basins are 3,500-4,200 meters above sea level, with some sections dropping to 3,200 meters. There are mountain passes such as the Khunjerab Pass and Mintaka Pass, which are important routes for the ancient Silk Road to the south to India and the west to Afghanistan and Iran. The G314 China-Pakistan Highway passes through...

PawsandWhiskers!
We planned a 3-day, 2-night trip to the Pamir Plateau, but it wasn't enough time.
🌟 We took our child on a trip to the Pamir Plateau, which is mentioned in geography textbooks. We only planned 3 days, which was not enough time. We couldn't spare any more time, so we had to cancel our train tickets and buy plane tickets for the next day to make it back in time for school. We'll have to come back to the Pamir Plateau again next time.
🌟 Altitude sickness is real, so be prepared. You may need to adjust your itinerary based on how everyone is feeling. If you're not a fan of self-driving, it's best to hire an experienced driver. We were lucky to find a great driver who was also our tour guide and photographer. He helped us book accommodation, took us to try local food, and discussed the best travel plans with us. Even if we come back with a friend who loves driving, I think we'll still hire a driver. Leave the driving to the professionals and enjoy the Pamir Plateau. We experienced all four seasons in three days, so bring plenty of clothes.
🌟 We visited the Muji Crater and the Eye of the Pamirs, experienced all four seasons, saw marmots, and enjoyed horseback and yak riding. We traveled along the Glacier Road, the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, and the Silk Road, admired the beautiful scenery of the Kunlun Mountains, and witnessed the dedication of the border guards. We traveled 4,266 km from Shanghai to Kashgar, immersed ourselves in the snow-capped mountains, drove along the most beautiful road in China, and admired the majestic Kunlun Mountains. Our child's favorite activities were horseback riding, yak riding, and playing with stones, which were the highlights of the trip. Every part of the Pamir Plateau will be a beautiful memory for us.

The Origin of All Things | Kunlun is the origin of all things.
In ancient mythology, the Queen Mother of the West lived in the depths of the Kunlun Mountains for a long time;
There are divine treasures and fine wines, and a fairyland;
Today, the Kunlun Mountains are shrouded in white mist;
The wonders of Ganoderma lucidum and snow lotus, the wonders of lakes hidden in the desert; 💖
The greatness of the Gobi Desert, the purity of the snow-capped mountains;
The vitality of all things is hidden here. 💞

Each bend has its own unique charm, and any photo you take will be a hit on social media.
🌄The road is located on the Pamir Plateau, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. In the distance, the snow-capped mountains🏔️ are covered with snow all year round, like a silver armor draped over the peaks. Against the backdrop of the blue sky and white clouds, they look even more sacred and pure. Along the way, you'll also encounter crystal-clear alpine lakes, whose waters reflect the mountains and sky like a mirror, leaving you breathless.
🌱The grasslands along the way are also worth seeing. The lush green grass is dotted with colorful wildflowers🌸, and as the breeze blows, the flowers and grass sway gently, as if waving to you. The oppressive feeling of the Pamirs is overwhelming.
Like a scene from a sci-fi movie
Magnified in front of you

Pamir Plateau in late autumn is 100 times more beautiful than Altay.
Did you know? 🥹 I've been longing to visit here for three years.
Most people follow the trend and go to Altay,
but I prefer the Pamir Plateau in southern Xinjiang in late autumn.
I think‼️ this is probably the most beautiful time of the year.
The live photos I took casually are amazing.
-
Plateaus, canyons, snow-capped mountains, and winding ancient roads,
blue lakes, wetlands, glaciers, herds of cattle and sheep, and distant villages,
almost every day, the sky is clear and blue, as transparent as a mirror.
The sunlight shines on the earth, through the woods, and reflects the golden snow willows...
-
From Kashgar ➠ Tashkurgan, the scenery along the way is like a carefully drawn oil painting, with simple smiles, gentle breezes, and quiet romance. It's really healing. 😭

Pamir Plateau, Xinjiang | Beautiful Hypoxia
| Beautiful Hypoxia. You have to visit the Pamir Plateau in the geography textbook|||✨This is known as the pearl of the Pamir Plateau💧, a combination of snow-capped mountains🏔️, lakes🌊, and sand dunes. The wind blows up the white sand, sweeping over the blue lake to the distant snow-capped mountains, as if putting a veil on the Pamir Plateau.
✔️Must-visit attractions
🏞️White Sand Lake
Half is white sand, half is pure sea. This is White Sand Lake🏞️, a dream island on the Pamir Plateau in southern Xinjiang. Usually, you can check in on the south bank along National Highway 314. If you want to be more niche, you can take the Mujie Border Road to the north bank, look at the lake from a high place, and the view is different. The upper limit of White Sand Lake is very high. When the weather is sunny🌞 and windless, it is like a blue mirror, which is very unreal.
🐉Panlong Ancient Road
Must-visit! 30 kilometers, 639 bends. "Walk all the bends today, and life will be smooth from now on" comes from here. It is only allowed to drive from the west entrance next to National Highway 314 to the east to Vacha Township.
🖼️Jincaotan
Jincaotan Scenic Spot, that is, Alar National Wetland Park🎡 on the Pamir Plateau in Xinjiang, is a marshy meadow with an altitude of 3100 meters. The Alar Wetland in summer is a green meadow; the vegetation turns yellow in autumn, and under the sun🌞, it seems to be covered with a golden light, hence the name "Jincaotan"; in the middle of the wetland, there is a winding river, which is the mother river of Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County—Tashkurgan River, originated at the junction of Xinjiang and Afghanistan, flows through Taxian and Aketao County, and merges into the Yarkant River at the mouth of the two rivers in Aketao County. It is 298 kilometers long and is the main tributary of the Yarkant River.
🏝️Taheman Wetland
Taheman Wetland is located at the foot of the southern slope of Mustag Snow Peak🏔️, known as the "land of god flowers" by the locals. It is one of the rare grasslands on the Pamir Plateau, with an altitude of 3050 meters. Surrounded by mountains⛰️ on all sides, the terrain is relatively low, like a basin. In summer, countless mountain springs converge here; in autumn, the whole wetland looks like a golden fur blanket.

Khunjerab Pass, known as the "forbidden zone of life", the lowest temperature is more than 40 degrees Celsius below zero, the oxygen content is less than half of the plain, located in Tashkurgan County on the Pamir Plateau, with an altitude of 5100 meters, surrounded by high mountains, perennial snow🌨️, it is the only land passage between China and Pakistan, and it is currently the highest pass in the world.

Exploring the Roof of the World: The Pamir Plateau
Seeking the unknown, I ventured into the Pamir Plateau.
As the altitude increased, breathing became more difficult, but the breathtaking scenery almost brought tears to my eyes.
Beyond the cobalt blue, snow-capped mountains spread out below, and at night, the sky is filled with countless stars.
▶︎Notes

新疆漫遊記
A must-visit for self-driving trips, the Pamir Plateau, known as the "ancestor of mountains and source of rivers," is definitely worth it!
The Pamir Plateau is located in the western part of Xinjiang, China, and spans China, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan. With an average altitude of over 4,500 meters, the main peaks are all above 6,000 meters. The world's second highest peak, K2, with an altitude of 8,611 meters, and the Mustagh Ata, known as the father of glaciers, are all located on the Pamir Plateau.
The Pamir Plateau is composed of several groups of mountains and the wide valleys and basins between the mountains. Five huge mountain ranges—the Himalayas, the Karakoram, the Kunlun Mountains, the Tianshan Mountains, and the Hindu Kush—meet here and twist into a huge mountain knot. Because of this terrain, the Pamir Plateau is known as the "ancestor of mountains."
The melting snow of the glaciers forms the source of the three major water systems, namely the Tarim River to the east, the Indus River to the south, and the Amu Darya to the west. Therefore, the Pamir Plateau is also known as the "source of rivers."
Between the towering peaks are narrow and deep valleys and basins. After being filled with melted snow, high-altitude lakes are formed in the depressions, basins, and dammed areas, nourishing the lush water plants. This is a paradise for wild animals such as highland goats and a pasture for nomadic people to survive.
Driving from Kashgar to the Pamir Plateau is a wonderful journey to witness magical landforms and natural landscapes. We can see the "Quicksand River," the hometown of "Sha Wujing" in "Journey to the West," and the current White Sand Lake. We can also see the "Giant Dragon Pool" Karakul Lake in Tang Seng's mouth, and the "Father of Snow Mountain" Mustagh Ata. There are red mountains in Oytag, no wonder some people say that the essence of the scenery from Kashgar to Taxkorgan is on the road.
To appreciate such beautiful scenery, remember to apply for a border pass and bring your ID card. There will be checkpoints on the road, and the speed of passage is still very fast if you cooperate actively~

Tashkurgan, how many more surprises do you have that I don't know about?! Tashkurgan Wetland is so beautiful!
Who would have thought that there is such a beautiful secret place on the way from Tashkurgan to Kashgar.
The beauty of the snow-capped mountains, grasslands, and rivers intertwined like an oil painting suddenly appeared before my eyes. This is Tashkurgan Wetland, a low-key but beautiful place that is not self-aware.
Tashkurgan Wetland is located 32 kilometers north of Tashkurgan County and is part of the Aral National Wetland Park on the Pamir Plateau in Xinjiang. It is the largest grassland base in Tashkurgan County and is also known as the Golden Pasture.
There is a dedicated viewing platform here, which is convenient for parking and viewing the beautiful scenery. Be sure to climb to the second floor of the viewing platform to overlook the vast beauty of the wetland. The green grassy wetland grassland is close by, and the endless snow-capped mountains are far away. It's really a good place to take pictures.
You can bring a drone to take aerial photos, and it is very convenient to take off and land on the viewing platform. We didn't expect to encounter such a beautiful place on the way, and the drone was put away more strictly and it was not easy to take it out, but the photos taken with the mobile phone are also very beautiful.
What is surprising is that there are original cultural and creative shops, coffee bookstores, and handmade milk tea shops on the second floor of the viewing platform. The cultural and creative products inside are relatively complete and beautiful, and I can't help but chop my hands and buy, buy, buy...
Tashkurgan, how many more surprises do you have that I don't know about?!
Location: China-Pakistan Highway, Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County, Kashgar, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, navigate to "Tashkurgan Wetland Park Viewing Platform", only 30 kilometers from Tashkurgan.
