Travel Tips

Located on the west of El Calafate in Argentina, the Moreno Glacier is the most iconic attraction of the Glacier National Park and costs 700 pesos. There are generally three ways to play: walking long distances along the trail; riding a close distance on the yacht; walking zero distance on the ice. When the glaciers of up to 20 floors collapse into the water, the loud noise will make you feel worthwhile.

Located in Los Graciares National Park in Patagonia, Argentina, the Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the most famous glaciers in the world. This huge glacier, which is about 30 km long, about 5 km wide and about 60 m high, attracts many tourists with its overwhelming scale and beauty. The biggest feature of the Perito Moreno Glacier is its active nature. You can witness the frequent collapse of ice blocks at the part where the tip of the glacier touches the lake, and the powerful sight and roar will be an unforgettable experience. In addition, the surface of the glacier is constantly changing, and the sculptural beauty of the ice, which shows a colour that is blue, white, and sometimes close to transparency, is also one of the highlights.
Access - About 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from El Carafate city

4 hours of ultra-steep mountain roads and 3 hours of ice hiking, the whole trip is really adrenaline-inducing! Although there are challenges in the process, it is this extreme experience that makes me feel super accomplished. It feels great to challenge yourself and push your limits. This is the true meaning of travel!
I booked Big Ice on the official website two months in advance. At that time, many posts said that Mini Trekking was already very good, but I thought to myself, since I have come here, of course I have to choose a more challenging one, so I was decisive. I chose Big Ice! Looking back now, this decision was really wise, because this adventure allowed me to see the most spectacular glacier scenery and enjoy the thrill of conquering nature.
At the beginning of the trip, the travel agency picked us up from the hotel on time. About an hour later, we arrived at the entrance of Moreno Glacier. Tourists need to get off the car and buy tickets by themselves. After entering the park, we drove for about 45 minutes. The scenery along the way was so beautiful that I couldn't wait. After arriving at the glacier, the team leader gave us some time to go to the observation deck to enjoy the panoramic view of the glacier. The scenery was really spectacular. Among several routes, I chose the yellow line recommended by the team leader, which had an excellent view.
Next is the highlight of this adventure – glacier hiking! We took a 10-minute boat ride to land and started hiking! First, we walked a section of the trail to the gear point, put on our hats and chains, and prepared for the upcoming challenge. It was a three-hour hike in the mountains. Although some cliff sections were extremely dangerous, the scenery before me made me feel extremely satisfied every step I took. Especially when the Patagonia wind roared by, not only was I not blown over, but I felt like an explorer, enjoying the power and challenge of nature.
After arriving at the glacier, we put on crampons and started hiking on the ice. The moment I stepped on the ice, I seemed to have entered another world. The ice-blue light and shadow were fascinating. Although we did not find the blue hole that day, the whole process still made me hooked and felt like I was one with nature.
The return journey was still the same as the original route, but at this time I no longer felt tired. Instead, I felt that this challenge had completely awakened my adventurous spirit. Finally, we each got a glass of glacier ice➕whiskey on the boat. This glass of whiskey from the glacier was simply the perfect ending.
Since Big Ice has an age limit (under 55 years old is required to participate), it is recommended to sign up for Mini Trekking if you are older. The older people came back and showed me photos, saying that the trip was relaxing and enjoyable. I have no regrets about choosing Big Ice, because this adventure really impressed me and will be unforgettable for a lifetime.
This glacier hike is undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable experiences in my travels. This kind of adventure to challenge myself and feel the power of nature is definitely worth a try! I believe that no matter who comes to experience it, they will fall in love with this close contact with nature just like me!

Moreno Glacier - Argentina
One of the attractions in southern Argentina is Moreno Glacier.
Situated close to the city of El Calafate, it is easy to get an organised tour. By car, it takes about 40 minutes to drive to the glacier. Once you are at the glacier, there are different walkways that you can take with each of them being different in difficulty. There is a cafe, gift shop and free wifi around the glacier too. There is also an option to take a boat onto the lake to see the glacier closer

Finally reached the living glacier that has been around for 200,000 years
From a delayed start at one location, I could have stayed an extra day in Calafate to delve deeper into Patagonia, but due to a strike, I had to cut the day short. Fortunately, I had an extra day to rest at this place. Long-distance travel really doesn't allow for plans, or you'll just experience a lot of changes.
Among the people who set off together in Ushuaia, there were locals, Canadians, Chinese, and Japanese. We safely passed 24 hours and upon arriving at El Calafate in the early morning, we gave a ride to the Japanese girl, Natsum, who had no internet, no wifi at the station, no Uber, and couldn't get a taxi. It's advisable for friends coming here to contact their accommodation in advance and get some drivers' contact information; it's better to arrange a pickup in advance.
The next morning, according to the original plan (which was already postponed by a day), we walked to the station in the dark around eight o'clock (it gets dark late here in the deep autumn of the Southern Hemisphere). Along the way, there were many dogs. There are really a lot of stray big dogs in Argentina. One even kept bringing us stones, asking us to play with it, so clingy. We met Natsum and successfully got on the bus at nine o'clock (round trip bus ticket costs 40,000 pesos per person). We slept all the way on the bus, which took a little over an hour to reach the entrance of Moreno Glacier National Park. We checked tickets (entrance fee is 12,000 pesos per person). Although it was a ticket for the 10th, I had inquired with the park in advance and they said it was fine as long as I explained why I didn't enter the park on the 10th. Indeed, the staff didn't ask, and after checking tickets, we drove another 40 minutes and finally reached the visitor center. We started walking the footbridges. This time, since we didn't have the equipment, we didn't join the glacier trekking group, nor did we join the cruise to see the glacier. We just purely watched from the footbridges. But actually, the footbridges are quite close, you can observe the glacier's crevasses (if you zoom in with a camera or phone lens). We saw several small ice calvings and missed two bigger ones. It turns out that the footbridges don't take very long to walk. It's just that taking photos or waiting for the glacier takes longer. There are five routes in total, and actually, each route is not difficult, it's just that the views are different. The green route is not open now, the purple route is for viewing the whole glacier, a very simple route. The red and yellow routes are where you can see the glacier best and are also the most crowded. To see ice calvings, I suggest friends who arrive in the morning to squat on the yellow line because once the cruise ships pass by, it seems to trigger some ice calvings. In the afternoon, you can squat on the red line. The ice calvings that go down usually happen on the red line side. I feel that if you don't squat for ice calvings, you can finish all the routes in 2-3 hours.
The glacier has retreated a lot from 1987 to 2022, and it is one of the rare glaciers in the world where the rate of disappearance and growth is consistent. The consequences of climate warming are unimaginable.
The third day was just strolling around the Argentine Lake and the town. Because it was winter, the water level in the lake was not high, and the flamingos were far away from us. But the town's roads were really deep into autumn, covered with golden fallen leaves. We gained two dog bodyguards, checked in at the town's landmark sign. Since it was Sunday, many shops in the town were closed. Since we cooked our own meals at the homestay this time, we glanced at the restaurant menu. A lamb leg set meal, lamb leg + red wine + something else (I didn't understand) costs less than 200 RMB, which feels like it's worth a try. There were some souvenir shops (the pink stone is Argentina's national stone, the rest I guess are made in Yiwu), some travel agencies (where you can join a tour), and my favorite supermarket (with its own brand of national supermarket).
If you have the physical strength and budget, you can consider going to El Chalten, about 200 kilometers nearby, to delve deeper into Patagonia. I finally understand why more and more people like hiking in the wilderness. When you see all kinds of stunning nature, it's hard not to be attracted, hard not to want to get closer to explore and understand. You will think about the past and present, think about how to balance the relationship between humans and nature. You will find that in front of nature, those things about the future, work, and worldly matters are not worth mentioning.
'Casually wasting the beautiful scenery is disrespectful to it.'

The Moreno Glacier
An insurmountable glacier in Patagonia. In this season of biting winds, the snow is scattered all over the ground. In this indifferent winter, I choose to wander with words. As the seasons change and the temperature fluctuates, I prefer the cold winter, and I must have a glass of whiskey with the millennia-old glacier.

Glacier Trekking in Patagonia
The Perito Moreno Glacier, a jewel in the crown of Argentina's Patagonia region, presents a landscape of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur. My adventure to this immense ice formation was a profound journey into the heart of the natural world, where the sounds of cracking ice and the sight of massive icebergs calving into the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino were a powerful reminder of nature's force and beauty.
Trekking on the glacier, equipped with crampons and led by experienced guides, was an experience unlike any other. The ice's shades of blue and the intricate patterns of crevasses and seracs created a mesmerizing, otherworldly terrain. The silence of the glacier, broken only by the occasional thunderous roar of ice breaking away, heightened the sense of adventure and exploration.
The glacier's accessibility allows for up-close encounters, offering a tactile and visual experience that's both exhilarating and humbling. The trek was not just a physical challenge but also an opportunity to learn about the glacier's ecology, the impacts of climate change on these ancient ice masses, and the importance of preserving such natural wonders.
Viewing platforms and walking trails around the glacier provided different perspectives and photo opportunities, each angle revealing the glacier's magnitude and the surrounding landscape's rugged beauty. The contrast between the ice and the verdant forests that line the shores of Lake Argentino was a vivid illustration of Patagonia's diverse ecosystems.
A boat tour along the glacier's face offered another vantage point, bringing us face to face with its towering ice walls. The sound of ice calving and crashing into the water was a dramatic demonstration of the glacier's dynamic nature, a powerful spectacle that's both thrilling and a poignant reminder of the natural world's constant evolution.
Visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier is an unforgettable adventure that connects visitors with the raw, untamed spirit of Patagonia. It's a journey that challenges the body, engages the mind, and stirs the soul, leaving an indelible mark on all who witness its icy splendor.

Glacier Trekking in Patagonia's Wilds
My adventure at the Perito Moreno Glacier in Patagonia was an exhilarating encounter with one of nature's most magnificent creations, a world of ice that is both imposing and breathtakingly beautiful🏔️. Walking on the glacier, with its vast expanse of blue ice and intricate formations, was a surreal experience, like stepping onto another planet🌏.
The sound of the glacier creaking and occasionally calving, sending massive chunks of ice crashing into the lake below, was a powerful reminder of the natural forces at work and the ever-changing landscape of our planet🌊.
For those planning to trek the Perito Moreno Glacier, I highly recommend going with a guided tour. Not only do the guides provide necessary equipment like crampons, but they also ensure safety while navigating the ice and offer insights into the glacier's geology and ecology🧊.
Witnessing the glacier up close allows for an appreciation of its sheer size and the intricate patterns in the ice. The varying shades of blue, from deep sapphire to crystalline turquoise, are a photographer's dream📸.
Remember, the weather in Patagonia can be unpredictable, with sudden changes in temperature and conditions. Dressing in layers and being prepared for all types of weather is essential for a comfortable experience🧣.
Lastly, take a moment to simply stand in silence and soak in the majesty of the glacier. It's an experience that connects you deeply with the power and beauty of the natural world🙏.

Argentina and Chile Super Detailed Travel Guide
Natalese Port
Arriving at the Port of Natalaes, undoubtedly one is heading towards the Banff National Park.
Attractions:
Torres del Paine National Park: the most famous attraction in Chile and also in Patagonia. There are many ways to enjoy the park, from a one-day check-in tour to an 8-day "O" line trek, everything is available. Among them, the most popular and classic is the "W" line trek, which can be walked forward or backward, taking about five days with moderate intensity. There are too many trekking strategies online, so I won't go into details. The main reminder is that if you want to trek, you must book the campsite 2-3 months in advance, otherwise the entire plan will fall through.
For a day trip, it's quite simple. Take a bus from the station to the park entrance in the morning. The round-trip ticket costs 13,000 pesos and takes about 2 hours one way. The park entrance fee is 21,000 pesos and is valid for three days. After buying the ticket, take the black tourist bus at the entrance to the starting point for hiking. The bus ride to the starting point is free, but the return trip costs 3,000 pesos. Once you reach the starting point, you can begin hiking. The one-day hike is very challenging. I divided this hike into three parts. The first part is a flat road with uphill and downhill sections, which leads to Camping Chileno where you can take a break. This section is about 6 kilometers long and the uphill section is quite steep. The second part ends at Torres Campsite. The difficulty of this section is not high, with ups and downs along the way, and it takes a little over an hour to complete. The third part is the climb to the top of the three towers. This section is very short, but the almost vertical climb is extremely exhausting. The official estimate is 45 minutes, but it took me about an hour and a half. The entire hike took 3 and a half hours. Going downhill is not tiring, but it can be very hard on the knees. It is recommended to wear knee pads before setting off, otherwise knee injuries can be troublesome. The normal downhill time is about 2 and a half hours.
Special reminder: If you have poor physical strength, are older, or are accompanied by children, do not attempt this one-day trip. The intensity is very high and it is easy to collapse. I saw many people turn back halfway. I burned over 5000 calories all day, so the intensity can be imagined.
In addition to the Three Pagodas day trip, there are various one-day tour activities such as the Gray Glacier day trip and the Lake District day trip. If you have more time, you can choose to stay in a hotel inside the park for a few nights, rent a car and enjoy the magnificent scenery of Baishiwan Park.
Dining:
In Natales Port, I didn't have anything particularly delicious to eat myself. If I had to say, the steak was pretty good, but it was quite expensive, averaging around 20,000 pesos per person.
Accommodation:
Accommodation-wise, there's nothing particularly recommended to be honest. There are many hostels in Nathalie's Port, and you can choose freely based on price. I recommend a hostel called "Singing Lamb", which has very good reviews and can be booked on Agoda. There are also many hotels in Banff National Park, but they are relatively expensive and more suitable for friends with sufficient budget.
Transportation:
Natalis Port does not have an airport, the airport is in the neighboring Punta Arenas.
Cars: Tickets to Punto Arenas and El Calafate can be purchased at the bus station. The ticket to El Calafate costs 18,000 pesos, departs at 7:30 in the morning and arrives around 3:00 in the afternoon. If you are going to the Punta Arenas airport, you can buy a direct ticket for 8,000 pesos, with a travel time of about 4 hours.
Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada itself doesn't have much to offer in terms of attractions, and is mostly used by tourists as a gateway to Pico Island. Let me give you a brief overview.
To go from the city to the airport by bus, it costs 6000 pesos per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Bus-sur station. This station also sells tickets to Natalies Port for 8000 pesos.
There are several hostels in the city area with decent environments, and you can book them on Agoda.
Arafat
The Argentine town is a starting point for visiting Bariloche or Moreno Glacier.
Attractions:
Perito Moreno Glacier: an active glacier where you can see glacier calving every day. After arriving at El Calafate station, you can directly purchase tickets to visit Perito Moreno Glacier the next day for a round trip of 800 pesos, including hotel pick-up and 4-5 hours of sightseeing. The entrance fee to Perito Moreno Glacier is 700 pesos, and the boat tour costs 700 pesos per person. To be honest, Perito Moreno Glacier is very spectacular. If you haven't been to Antarctica, you will be amazed by the glacier. If you wait on the hiking trail for a while, you can see many large pieces of ice falling into the lake.
Glacier hiking is a particularly interesting activity, with moderate intensity and lots of fun. Because I have seen too many glaciers in Antarctica, I did not participate in this activity. The price is around 3000 pesos in my impression.
Dining:
Because we cooked our own meals in the hostel and don't have any particular restaurant recommendations, but I went to town and the restaurants looked good and the prices were reasonable.
Accommodation:
America del Sur Hostel: A fantastic hostel with 4-person rooms that have private bathrooms and lockers, priced at $18 per night including breakfast. The hostel is located on a hillside with a first-class view of the distant Argentine lake. At night, the lobby turns into a bar serving various drinks and BBQ dinners. Vegetarians need not worry as there is a salad buffet available for 250 pesos per person.
Transportation:
Airport: El Calafate has an airport, but due to expensive airfare, few people take off from here.
Car: The ticket to Natales Port can be purchased at the station for 950 pesos. There are cars departing at 6:30 am and 7:00 am, and some companies will pick up people at the hotel lobby. After arriving at the Chilean border, you can transfer to a free minibus to Torres del Paine National Park.

The reality of the Great Wall is -
Moreno Glacier in Argentina in the southern tip of South America, the glaciers are 20 stories high, stretching for 30 kilometers, with a history of 200,000 years. One of the few live glaciers in the world. It is also one of the game's location for rights. In the summer, you can often see the "ice collapse" spectacle: a huge piece of ice fell into the Argentino Lake, a deafening sound made people hold their breath, but soon, everything went to calm. Today, the Moreno Glacier resembles a huge ice wall that is propelling at a speed of 30 centimeters per day, and it seems to feel the atmosphere of the glacier era. Probably, this is the Great Wall.
