The Great Hanshin Earthquake occurred on the 17th January 1995 with a magnitude of 7.2, killing more than 6000 people and leaving 45,000 homeless. Today there is a 60 metre stretch of the Meriken wharf quay that has been preserved to show visitors the immense damage that the earthquake caused.

Very sobering monument to the lives lost. But also impressive how quick they got it going again. Would have been nice for a little more on the rescue attempts and the impact on the local citizens. This is very much focused on the damage on the port. There is a nice neat corner that shows you a video explaining the earthquake and its after effects.....
