At that time, this place was just a rural market called Youhu. The scholar Pufeng moved here after being appointed as the Deputy Marshal to Lin'an, and it became the permanent residence of the Pu family. During the reign of Emperor Lizong of Song, Pufeng's sixth-generation descendant, Pudou, was appointed as the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Personnel, and his residence was granted the name 'Puyuan', which is how the ancient town got its name. Since then, Puyuan has been known for its scholarly atmosphere and strong cultural environment.
