Chengde Tourism - Little Potala Palace.
Putuo Zongcheng Temple, also known as the "Little Potala Palace," is a Buddhist temple built by order of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 80th birthday of Empress Dowager Chongqing. It is the largest architectural complex among the Eight Outer Temples of Chengde, completed in the 36th year of Qianlong's reign (1771). Covering an area of 220,000 square meters, its main building, the Great Red Platform, is located on the mountain top, with a total height of 43 meters. The central hall, the Hall of Ten Thousand Dharmas Returning to One, is the main hall, with its roof rising above the surrounding buildings, all covered with gilded fish-scale copper tiles. Over 60 (more than 40 remain) flat-roofed white platforms and white pagodas are arranged freely along the mountain slope, with no obvious axis.

12-Day Trip to Chengde & Beijing in October
(Saturday, October 12, 2012) Morning: Putuo Zongcheng Temple
I had already bought a ticket to Beijing for the evening, so I had plenty of time today. I checked out at 10 am, stored my luggage, and took a bus directly to the Little Potala Palace.
Putuo Zongcheng Temple
* A Han-Tibetan style building, built in imitation of the Potala Palace in Lhasa
* The gold roof of the Hall of All-Pervading Law cost more than 10,000 taels of gold leaf
* The largest of the Eight Outer Temples
It is also one of the must-see attractions for tourists. Fortunately, it was the off-season, so there were no crowded and noisy crowds, and the moderate number of tourists kept the place alive. It must be a sunny day, so that the red and white walls with yellow and green glazed tiles look noble and solemn in the sun. The photos are so colorful.
After visiting the first half of the Han-style buildings, I sat down to rest. I ate some hand-torn bread and drank some black coffee while admiring the big red platform in front of me. I was afraid of altitude sickness, so I didn't consider going to Lhasa, but coming here made up for the regret.
According to the introduction of the "Big Red Platform," the interior of the building is in the shape of a square. When I climbed up and saw it, I was shocked. It was so big. I went up layer by layer to the top floor, and the golden roof was dazzling. Looking around, I could see the nearby Puning Temple (the one with the glazed pagoda behind it) and the distant Sledgehammer Peak.
I recommend spending about 2.5 hours here.
Overall style: A Han-Tibetan combined temple with a grand scale, majestic and solemn, cleverly built on the mountain, various white platforms and pagoda buildings are scattered due to the terrain, with different heights and changes, full of snow-capped plateau style.
The Big Red Platform is the main building of the Little Potala Palace. Below is a large white platform up to 18 meters high, and a large red platform 25 meters high stands on it, with a total height of 43 meters. There are six vertical glazed Buddha niches inlaid in the center of the south side of the Big Red Platform, with yellow and green colors, and Han-style techniques are used to mark the axis.
The Wanfaguiyi Hall is the main hall located in the center of the group of buildings. It has a double eave and four corners, and there is a corridor around it. Under the eaves of the hall, there is a Yunlong Dou plaque with the inscription "Wanfaguiyi" by Emperor Qianlong, written in Chinese, Manchu, Mongolian, and Tibetan. The roof of the hall is all covered with gilded fish scale tiles, the treasure top is in the shape of a Tibetan Dharma bell, the ridge of the hall is decorated with cloud patterns, the four corners of the flying eaves are high, and the decoration is luxurious.

Day 2 in Chengde, challenge successful.
In the morning, I had a pancake with sausage and soy milk for breakfast.
After breakfast, I took the bus to Putuo Zongcheng Temple. I entered the mountain gate, passed the Five Pagodas Gate, climbed the Big Red Platform, looked out at Bangchui Mountain, and saw the golden roof shining.
Then I went to the Panchen Lama's Palace and saw the glazed pagoda.
I experienced the double-decker sightseeing bus, passed the station, and took a taxi to Qingshui Peak. I touched Bangchui Mountain and lived to 113.
I walked up the mountain and down the mountain, a total of 3 hours.
For children, it is very tempting to experience the cable car. But I still hiked with the children, and on the way we saw a lizard, looked at Bangchui Mountain from different distances and angles, and saw the Toad Stone. It was very tiring, and the road was not easy to walk. But isn't the road of life bumpy?
Indeed, I am a person who suffers without hardship. Along the way, I told the children stories about horseshoes and various legends.
The journey of life is like this, rest when you are tired, grit your teeth and go up, new platforms have new perspectives.
Going downhill is much easier. The children are jumping around.
Today is another 20,000 steps, and I ordered stewed pig feet with soybeans in the evening to replenish my leg strength.
Chengde specialties: Mountain Villa, Little Potala Palace, Qingshui Mountain, Double Pagoda Mountain.

If you're afraid of altitude sickness and can't go to Tibet, you can visit the Little Potala Palace in Chengde.
In the 36th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign, the leaders of various ethnic minorities in the border areas gathered in Chengde to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Qianlong and the 80th birthday of the Empress Dowager. This was an unprecedented event of national unity among all ethnic groups. In order to respect the beliefs of all ethnic groups and unite the people, Emperor Qianlong ordered the construction of this large temple, the Putuo Zongcheng Temple, which was built in imitation of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. "Putuo Zongcheng" is the Chinese translation of the Tibetan "Potala". The temple is built on a mountain, facing south. Inside the mountain gate is a stele pavilion, and to the north is the Five Pagoda Gate, which is more than 10 meters high and has three arches. On top of the gate are five Lama pagodas in red, yellow, black, white, and green. To the north of the gate is a glazed archway. The terrain gradually rises to the north of the archway, and various white platforms and pagoda platforms are scattered due to the terrain, with different heights and various changes. Finally, there is the majestic main building, the Dahongtai. On the front of the Dahongtai, there is a large white platform that is 18 meters high, on top of which stands the Dahongtai, which is 25 meters high. Inside the red platform, there are three-story group buildings on all sides, and in the center is the "All Laws Return to One" hall with a double-eave spire and gilded copper tiles. The biggest feature of this temple is its Tibetan-style architecture. There are about 60 large and small buildings in the temple, most of which are flat-roofed white walls. The main building, the Dahongtai, is a dark red square building, which is very eye-catching against the surrounding white buildings. The top of the "All Laws Return to One" hall in the center of the Dahongtai is covered with gilded copper tiles. The cost of this alone is 10,000 taels of gold. This is where major religious ceremonies are held or where the Qing emperors met with important tribal leaders and princes and ministers of ethnic minorities. The Putuo Zongcheng Temple is surrounded by towering ancient trees and has a quiet environment. You can also overlook the Bangchui Mountain from here. It is a must-visit place in the Eight Outer Temples. Tips: 1. Take the sightseeing bus of the Mountain Resort and get off at Erma Road. This is the best place to take a panoramic view of the Little Potala Palace. 2. The sightseeing bus departs at 7 a.m., which is the best time to take a panoramic view.

Chengde Two-Day Tour
Chengde Mountain Resort (Half to One Day): You can explore it on your own, but it takes time. If you want to be quicker, follow a guide.
Little Potala Palace (1-2 hours): Remember to listen to the explanation. You can choose not to visit the attached Xumi Fushou Temple; it's not very big and can be quickly toured.
Puning Temple (1-2 hours): Also, listen to the explanation. They will tell you about your birth Buddha, how to worship, burn incense, etc.
Bangchui Mountain: Take the slide up and down. You can see it from all three places mentioned above, only the distance varies. It's really not very interesting, and I don't highly recommend it.
Chengde Museum: Visit the museum here when you go to a place.

Chengde Potala Palace ~ Puning Temple
After leaving the Xumi Fushou Temple, a few hundred meters drive will take you to the Chengde Potala Palace, also known as the Puning Temple (the combined ticket for the two temples is 80 yuan). It was first built in the 32nd year of Qianlong (1767) and completed in the 36th year of Qianlong (1771). This temple was modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, and is therefore also commonly known as the "Little Potala Palace." "Puning" is the Chinese translation of the Tibetan word "Potala," meaning "Holy Land of Avalokitesvara."
The architectural style of the Puning Temple integrates both Han and Tibetan elements, making it a model of the fusion of Han and Tibetan architectural arts. The temple is built on a mountain, facing south, and consists of about 60 buildings of various sizes, including the front mountain gate, stele pavilion, five-tower gate, the middle glazed archway, white platform, monks' quarters, and the main building at the rear, the Great Red Platform, along with other surrounding structures. The Great Red Platform is the main building of the temple, covered with gilded copper tiles, and houses the "Hall of All Laws Return to One," where major religious ceremonies or important meetings with the Qing emperor were held.
Qianlong built the Puning Temple to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 80th birthday of the Empress Dowager, and to unite the various ethnic minorities in the border areas by using Lamaism for pacification.

There is a "Little Potala Palace" in Chengde, Hebei, which has been around for 252 years
Standing on the city wall on the small hill of Chengde Summer Resort, you can overlook a group of buildings similar to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet - this is the Putuo Zongcheng Temple ("Putuo Zongcheng" is the Chinese translation of "Potala" in Tibetan), which is one of the famous "Eight Outer Temples" in Chengde, and also an important part of the World Cultural Heritage "Chengde Summer Resort and its surrounding temples".
The Putuo Zongcheng Temple was built during the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty to celebrate the 60th birthday of Emperor Qianlong and the 80th birthday of Empress Dowager Chongqing. The blueprint for the construction was the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, so it is aptly called the "Little Potala Palace". The temple is built on the mountain, facing south, and covers a large area. The front part includes the mountain gate, the stele pavilion, and the Five Pagoda Gate; the middle part includes the glazed archway, the white platform, the monks' rooms, etc.; the rear part includes the main building, the Big Red Platform, and other buildings around it, totaling more than 60 places. The Tibetan-style red and white buildings are scattered among them, with the highest being the 43-meter-high main building, the Big Red Platform.
When you come to the Putuo Zongcheng Temple in late autumn, the sun is shining and the autumn wind is refreshing. You can see a series of flat-roofed white buildings with a strong Tibetan style, hidden among the colorful red leaves, and you really feel like you are in Tibet. As you climb up the steps, you can see the majestic Big Red Platform standing tall. Around the Red Platform are three layers of group buildings, and in the center of the skirt building is the "All Laws Return to One" hall with a double-eave spire and gilded copper tile items, and the big golden top is very dazzling.
As you continue to climb, you reach the top platform of the Big Red Platform, and the view suddenly opens up - to the south is the winding city wall on the mountains of the Summer Resort, to the east you can see another temple of the "Eight Outer Temples" - the Xumi Fushou Temple, and further away is the big "Mallet Stone" on the Qingshui Mountain. In late autumn in Chengde, the green, yellow and red colors in the mountains complement each other, and the Red Platform and White Platform are scattered and orderly, which is very majestic and spectacular.
In history, Emperor Qianlong visited the Putuo Zongcheng Temple many times. When the Tuerhute tribe returned to the east, Emperor Qianlong received the leader of the Tuerhute tribe, Wobaxi, and his entourage in the "All Laws Return to One" hall of the Putuo Zongcheng Temple. The two stone tablets in the temple, "Record of the Tuerhute Tribe's Return" and "Record of the Favorable Treatment of the Tuerhute Tribe", were erected to record this event.
Tips: The joint ticket price for the Putuo Zongcheng Temple and the Xumi Fushou Temple is 80 yuan per person, and there is a free battery car shuttle between the two places, and it only takes a few minutes to walk.
