Take Metro Line 9 to Qibao Station, and it's about a 7-minute walk to the town. Although the area is not large, Qibao Ancient Town is charming and unique. Due to its proximity to downtown Shanghai, the old streets are always bustling with crowds on holidays, making it very lively.
The main streets are South Street and North Street. South Street is known for its food and snacks, with must-try places including Tianxiang Lou, Tangqiao Restaurant, and Yipin Fangao. While wandering through the alleys of the old streets, you can also find many small historical sites, such as the Old Commune and Dongshi Bridge. There are historical background introductions next to these sites, making it convenient for visitors to understand the historical significance of the area. The planning is very thoughtful.
For travelers who want to visit an ancient town without going too far, Qibao Ancient Town is the most convenient choice. A trip to Qibao not only allows you to experience the rich ancient atmosphere and enjoy authentic food but also provides a cultural immersion.

Ancient town in a huge city
Qibao Ancient Town has been on my list of places to see in Shanghai for a long time. I finally visited over the Spring Festival 2022. I took a friend with me and we used subway line 9 to access the town. It’s actually very easy, the subway stop on line 9 comes out inside a mall, a quick walk through and around the corner you’ll find Qibao Old Street. The entrance to the Ancient Town is free but guarded with covid check points so be prepared to show green codes to enter.
Once inside, the town is almost circular, so you can start on either side and see it all. We went to the left first and because we entered around 4pm, we had chance to see the sun setting over the bridge. This also meant a huge crowd of people who then ventured off into the food area of the town. There are a number of tea shops to visit inside the Ancient Town, sat on the river over looking the bridges. Its a really lovely place to visit. You could easily spend 2-3 hours here.

I am a traveler's "Shanghai Qibao Ancient Town"
Qibao Ancient Town, located in Shanghai, is the closest ancient water town to Shanghai. Most of the tourists visiting this ancient town are locals. Compared with Zhujiajiao, this ancient town is smaller in scope, but it is also very lively. You can also taste cheap and good-quality snacks here, so backpackers traveling to Shanghai may want to stop by.

Qibao Ancient Town is the nearest ancient town to Shanghai, and Qibao Old Street is the tourist center of the ancient town.
The whole street is full of antique buildings, rich in Ming and Qing architectural styles. There are various snacks everywhere on the street, as well as folk attractions such as Qibao Dangpu, Wine Square, and Caotangtang. It is suitable for casual shopping and feel the style of Jiangnan Ancient Town.
Qibao Ancient Town has been a lively market in the Northern Song Dynasty. Today, the old streets and deep lanes are mostly left in the Song Dynasty, while the old streets are mostly two-story imitation Ming and Qing style buildings.
Qibao Old Street is divided into two sections by the river. The North Street is mainly a variety of shops, selling crafts, ornaments, antique calligraphy and painting, as well as cotton weaving workshops, Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall and other attractions. South Street is dominated by specialties, such as stinky tofu, skewers, scorpions, simmered cakes, and shovel.
The river in the middle can be used for boat trips, 10 yuan per person. Although the voyage is only more than ten minutes, you can also feel the mood of the water town.
Qibao Old Street also has many interesting small attractions, such as the old line, the pawnshop, the cotton weaving hall, which has wax figures and realistic scenes. You can also go to the shadow art gallery to watch the shadow play. In addition, there are attractions such as Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall, Qicaotang, Zhou's Micro-carving Hall, Qibao Winery, Bell Tower, Qibaojiao Temple, etc. You can buy Zhang Lianwan to watch slowly, or you can buy tickets for a single visit (about 5-10 yuan). .
Opening hours: Old Street is open all day, and the opening hours of small attractions are usually 09.

Qibao Ancient Town is located in the southwest suburb of Shanghai. It belongs to Minhang District and can be reached by subway. It is probably the closest one to many magical metropolitan areas in the ancient towns around Shanghai. However, although it is ancient town, Qibao is not so ancient compared with Zhouzhuang, Xitang, Wuzhen, and even closer Zhujiajiao. It belongs to the town in the city, and the old buildings and later modern buildings are mixed together. And the area is not very large. However, it is quite easy to come to Qibao, and there are also the characteristics of Jiangnan Town, so it is good to visit it.
is the same as our childhood. The old street of Qibao still seems to stay in the 70s and 80s of the last century. Narrow streets, low eaves, you can see your neighbors at noon. The delicious meal that is being made. Although there is some confusion, it is the warmth and kindness between the people in the modern community of high-rise buildings.

Visit the Ancient Town in Shanghai and Enjoy Beautiful Lights
Qibao Old Town is an ancient town in Shanghai with a canal running through the middle. The buildings on both sides are beautifully lit, giving it a very Chinese feel. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll, taking beautiful photos, and enjoying some snacks. If you're looking for a full meal, there are plenty of restaurants to choose from just a short walk away. There aren't many foreign tourists, and the evening is the best time to take photos. You can also rent traditional Chinese outfits for photos.

Shanghai Qibao Ancient Town
Qibao Ancient Town is located in the central-northern part of Minhang District, Shanghai. It is a historical ancient town with both the natural scenery of the Jiangnan water town and a long-standing cultural heritage. In November 2020, it was rated as a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.
🌟Historical Origins:
It was initially built during the Eastern Han Dynasty and formed during the Northern Song Dynasty, reaching its peak development during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. There are two theories about the origin of its name: one is that it was named after the Qibao Teaching Temple. In the early Song Dynasty, the Qibao Teaching Temple was relocated here, and in 1008 AD, the place where the temple was located was named "Qibao," and Qibao Town emerged accordingly; the other theory is that it was named after seven treasures in the area, including the Flying Buddha, Floating Bell, Golden Lotus Sutra, Sacred Tree, Golden Rooster, Jade Axe, and Jade Chopsticks.
🏯Ancient Town Layout:
The core area is centered around the old street, with the north-south street as the central axis. The main street is 368 meters long, with a total building area of 31,400 square meters. The ancient town layout was initially formed in the early Ming Dynasty, with a regular, square, and symmetrical chessboard pattern. Puhuitang intersects with the north-south street perpendicularly, dividing the street into north and south, with alleys connecting east and west, forming an overall "非" shape. The main street roads include Fuqiang Street, Nan East Street, Youth Road, and Bathhouse Street.
🎑Main Attractions:
- Qibao Old Street: A bustling street integrating "leisure, tourism, and shopping." The residential buildings on the old street mainly feature large roofs with double slopes and black tiles, generally not exceeding two stories in height. The building structures are mostly brick and wood. The facade colors are mainly light tones, with white walls, gray-blue tiles, black doors, and brown wood.
- Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall: Located at No. 75 Puxi Square, Qibao Ancient Town, it is a two-story courtyard-style Ming and Qing building with brick and wood structure. The hall houses over 400 precious items, including Zhang Chongren's sculptures, paintings, artifacts, and related books, newspapers, and photos. It is divided into four exhibition areas: "Preface Hall," "Fame in Europe," "Studio Spring and Autumn," and "Sculpture Master," showcasing the life and artistic achievements of the master sculptor.
- Qibao Shadow Play Art Museum: Located at No. 95 North West Street, Qibao Old Street, it is a comprehensive art museum integrating the exhibition, production, performance, research, and collection of Qibao shadow play art. The museum is divided into performance and exhibition areas. The performance area has regular shadow play performances, and the exhibition area displays the heritage, transmission status, basic forms, and artistic features of Qibao shadow play through pictures, artifacts, and audiovisual materials.
- Cricket Grass Hall: Consisting of a front hall garden and a rear hall main fighting platform, it is a Ming and Qing building integrating cricket fighting and the display of ancient and modern insect tools, with a history of over a hundred years. The hall displays cricket pots, bamboo tubes, cricket grass, and cricket specimens of various sizes.
- Cotton Weaving Workshop: A cultural history exhibition hall of cotton weaving craftsmanship, themed "Humanistic Feelings, Clothing the World." It showcases the development history of the Qibao cotton weaving industry from four aspects: trend (development), people (main characters), objects (products), and words (culture). It comprehensively displays the planting techniques and weaving craftsmanship of the cotton weaving industry, focusing on the characteristic Qibao cotton fabric—Xibu ("Qibao Point"), and the soul figure of Qibao's development—Huang Daopo.
🍱Specialty Food:
This is also a food street with various famous local snacks such as Qibao Rice Cake, Qibao Lamb, Rice Wine Marinated Meat, Stinky Tofu, Soup Dumplings, Bamboo Tube Rice, Lamb, and Rice Wine.
🚗Transportation Guide:
You can take bus routes 189, 196, 199, or 735 to Qixin Road Fuqiang Street Station; take Metro Line 9 to Qibao Station, and walk about 10-15 minutes to reach.
Whether you want to experience the charm of the Jiangnan water town, taste the specialty food, or explore the traces of historical culture, Qibao Ancient Town is worth a visit😉!

Listen to me, bring an extra stomach to Qibao Ancient Town
On the second day of the Dragon Boat Festival, my trip to Shanghai continues.
I went to Qibao Ancient Town, a street full of delicacies, I wanted to try everything, regretting that I ate too much in the morning, it's a pity that I only have one stomach, really an average of 50 yuan can make you very full.
✅Bai Nian Long Pao Crab Yellow Soup Dumplings and Knife Fish Wontons (Qibao Main Store) It's my first time eating, Shanghai big wontons, small bowl for 30 yuan, 6 pieces, large bowl for 55 yuan, 12 pieces, so delicious, and there are soup dumplings.
✅Qibao Old Street Tangyuan Shop (Qibao Store) Each one is very big, mostly 5 yuan each, I ate the shepherd's purse tangyuan, one is enough to make you full.
✅Lao Wu Scallion Pancake So fragrant, it's a pity I had no room left to eat.
✅Shunchang Renshou Stuffed Eggs (Qibao Old Street Store) Don't miss this intangible cultural heritage food.
✅Guan Lao Tai Stinky Tofu (Qibao Flagship Store) Small portion for 15 yuan, 7 pieces, large portion for 20 yuan, 10 pieces, smelly and fragrant.
✅Qibao Zongzi (Qibao Store) During the Dragon Boat Festival, you must have a zongzi, they are all freshly wrapped by the aunties, prices vary, with meat, with salted egg yolk and meat, many varieties.
There are also Dao Ban Xiang salted pork, various fried skewers snacks, mini pan-fried buns, roasted pig's trotters, and plenty of drinks, there's even a Luckin Coffee on the old street.
The ancient town is not big, there are quite a few people during the Dragon Boat Festival, looking at the scenery, small bridges and flowing water, eating delicious snacks, you can really stroll and eat all day long.

#chinatrip
Qibao Ancient Town is one of the places recommended as a tourist attraction. I, however, found that the area is too dry and hot on September due to less trees around the area compared to Yuyuan Garden.
The place is packed full of people and there are tons of street food vendors as well as knick knacks for you to look at, but not a lot of them are interesting enough for me to actually stop and look around inside.
The main entrance has a pretty tall bell tower that you can’t miss, and the area unique layout due to waterways around this ancient city makes it a great scenery to take pictures.
The downside other than the heat was how green the river is, not exactly algae green but more a muddy green, and the attractions around this ancient city is not exactly open or fun to experience. It’s OK but there are other areas in Shanghai that you might want to visit instead. Plus, the ride to get there was quite far from the central Shanghai area.

An ancient city on the outskirts of Shanghai, easy to get to!
In case you are bored with the atmosphere in Shanghai city 🚶♀️
Here is the atmosphere of the ancient city worth walking in Shanghai 😌
.
👉 This place is called "Qibao Ancient City" (七宝古镇), located on the outskirts of Shanghai in Minhang District, about 18 kilometers from the city center. This city feels different from the Shanghai we know. That's because it is an ancient city that has been preserved. So it is old and not developed, but has been developed for commerce.
.
Therefore, in addition to beautiful old houses on both sides of the road, there are also restaurants, teahouses, museums, temples, churches, and more. In the ancient city, there is a beautiful waterway and many things to buy. There are foods that look like local food to choose from.
.
🍵 The atmosphere here is good. It is suitable for sitting and sipping tea and enjoying the view (but the price of a pot of tea is not cheap, so ask for the price first). Or come to take pictures. And at night, it is nice to walk around.
.
🚇 It is very easy to get here. Take subway line 9 and get off at Qibao Station 七宝站
🕒 Opening hours: All the time
.
To summarize, this place is not difficult to get to and worth a walk.

Qibao Ancient Town | Picturesque, retaining the flavor of the Jiangnan water town
Qibao Town is a historic town that not only has the natural scenery of the Jiangnan water town but also has a long cultural connotation. It also boasts attractions such as the Bell Tower Square, Puxi Square, the Ancient Opera House, Zhang Chongren Memorial Hall, Cricket Pavilion, Zhou's Micro-carving Museum, the Temple, and the Cotton Textile Museum.
Qibao Ancient Town got its name from the Qibao Temple, and by the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, it was already a gathering place for merchants and scholars, known far and wide as a major town.
Water is the soul of the Qibao Ancient Town's landscape, adding ink-wash charm to the ancient residences with white walls and black tiles on both sides of the river. It is also a commercial and cultural channel. In the past, ships departing from the docks of Qibao Town could reach different places through the developed network of waterway transportation, truly achieving wealth reaching all corners of the world and goods circulating like wheels.

As the water town closest to the Shanghai city area, Qibao Ancient Town has a strong commercial atmosphere. But if you come during the off-season, you can still taste the ancient Jiangnan charm here.
Qibao has a history of a thousand years, with historical records, but there is also a folk tale of 'Seven Treasures'. These 'Seven Treasures' are: the flying Buddha, the floating bell, the golden lotus sutra, the divine tree, the golden rooster, the jade axe, and the jade chopsticks.
The floating bell is located in the central square of Qibao Ancient Town, built during the Ming Yongle era by the abbot of Qibao Temple, Monk Boqia, and is said to have floated up from the river.
Around the floating bell, there is also a bell corridor where visitors can write their wishes on a wishing card and hang it here.

Qibao Ancient Town
There are two entrances to Qibao Old Street, distributed on both sides of Qibao Temple, and they are connected inside.
If you want to go to Qibao Ancient Town, you need to enter from the archway on the right side facing the temple. Walk inside for a few minutes, cross a bridge and you will arrive. Most tourists will enter from this side.
If you want to go to Nan Qibao Temple, enter from the archway on the left.
Scenery:
1. Cuanlai Bell: The Cuanlai Bell Tower is the first thing you see when you enter Qibao Ancient Town. On the first floor, you can buy a wish card for 20 yuan and go upstairs once. The wish cards are hung all over the long pavilion, and the tower is closed at 18 o'clock.
2. Pu Huitang Bridge: The bridges in the ancient town of p4 are pleasing to the eye both day and night! There are three bridges in parallel here, namely Anping Bridge, Pu Huitang Bridge, and Kangle Bridge. The Pu Huitang Bridge in the middle is the most exquisite and photogenic. At night, there will be light shining on the ripples reflected on the bridge, which is pleasing to the eye.
3. Nan Qibao Temple: It is a not-so-big temple that has already become independent. There are two ginkgo trees at the entrance of the temple. Inside, there is a place for worshiping Buddha and burning incense. The whole temple is surrounded by Sanskrit sounds, and the main hall has the smell of burning incense.
Consumption:
1. Exhibition hall: The bell tower costs 20 yuan to go upstairs once + a wish card (hung on the long pavilion next to it), the cotton weaving and shadow puppet hall costs 5 yuan each (free for minors), and the Zhang Chongyuan Memorial Hall is free (closed on Monday, you can get a free ticket as soon as you enter, and you can finish the tour in a short while).
2. Shops: The colors of the street shops are bright, but the things are common nostalgic snacks, toys, ancient costumes, etc.
3. Food and drink: It's not difficult to fill your stomach. The shops here with clear prices are not expensive in the scenic area, 20-25 yuan for a bowl of noodles, 10-30 yuan for a drink, and 60-100 yuan for a cup of tea by the river. For those without a clear price, be sure to ask first, beware of assassins, but if you want to eat well, it is recommended to go out to eat. Qibao Old Street can be finished quickly, and there are no special foods, so there is no need to eat inside.
Transportation: Bicycles/electric bicycles can pass through the ancient town, but it is not recommended because the road is narrow and there are many people, and it is easy to bump when turning! Three-wheel and four-wheel vehicles cannot enter.
Photography:
1. The ancient town archway and bell tower are good for shooting, but people come and go easily into the lens, especially pay attention to avoid the square dance team around 19 o'clock.
2. The street is also crowded with people, not so good for shooting, it is recommended to raise the angle of view.
3. Pu Huitang Bridge is beautiful, don't stand on it and shoot, go to Kangle Bridge to shoot it, it's very photogenic.
4. No photography is allowed in the Zhang Chongyuan Memorial Hall.

A Thousand Years of Shanghai Seen Through Qibao - Qibao Ancient Town | Picturesque, Retaining the Flavor of the Jiangnan Water Town
Legend has it that Qibao Ancient Town was named after the seven treasures: golden rooster, divine tree, jade axe, golden lotus sutra, flying Buddha, dunking bell, and jade chopsticks. Qibao Ancient Town is picturesque and retains the appearance of the ancient town of Jiangnan Water Town, with no shortage of water town elements, preserving the flavor of Jiangnan in every detail.
Qibao Town is located at the junction of Puhuitang and Hengli Port in the southwest of Shanghai, with a unique geographical location. Puhuitang runs through the whole territory, and Hengli Port runs through the town, which can go up to Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and down to Huangpu. Qibao Town has won the national health town, national beautiful environment town, Chinese calligraphy hometown, national health city pilot town and other honorary titles.
The Qibao Bell Tower is located in the Bell Tower Square and is the iconic building of Qibao Ancient Town. One of the legendary seven treasures - the dunking bell is hidden here. The dunking bell is a genuine cultural relic, cast in the seventh year of Yongle in the Ming Dynasty, and has a history of more than 600 years. The bell is 1.9 meters high, 1 meter in diameter, 9 cm thick, and weighs one ton. Striking the bell in Buddhism implies clearing troubles, increasing wisdom, and ensuring peace. Every New Year's Eve, the bell rings four times, praying for the people of Qibao.
Qibao Old Street is laid out in a 'non' character layout, covering an area of about 90 acres, divided into north and south districts along Puhuitang. The south is a snack street, and the north is a craft, traditional folk culture area. The ancient town still retains the complete Ming and Qing architectural style, the residential buildings with black tiles and pink walls, the traditional stone arch bridges, depicting a simple and elegant ink painting. Qibao Ancient Town, a lesser-known destination in Shanghai, is a half-hour subway ride away to the water town
If you come to Qibao and only visit Qibao Old Street, you may be disappointed. In fact, Qibao Ancient Town is not just the bustling Qibao Old Street, there are also many small alleys where locals live, full of real life.
Here, waterways crisscross, ancient bridges are densely covered, and a group of temples with a long history are hidden inside. It's only a half-hour subway ride from the city, making it a particularly worthwhile water town to visit. Strolling around here, you can feel the strong old times of the Shanghai suburbs.
The history of Qibao: Qibao Town is named after a temple, and it has a history of a thousand years. There are not a few ancient towns in Shanghai that are named after temples, such as Nanxiang, Longhua, Fahua, Zhenru, etc. There is also a saying that goes, 'Ten years in Shanghai, look at Pudong, a hundred years in Shanghai, look at the Bund, a thousand years in Shanghai, look at Qibao'. The 'Seven Treasures' are: Flying Buddha, Cuan Bell, Golden Lotus Sutra, Divine Tree, Golden Rooster, Jade Axe, Jade Chopsticks.
✔️Qibao Old Street
The busiest street in Qibao Ancient Town, but this street is not much different from most ancient town commercial streets, with food everywhere. Even on weekdays, there are many people. The dumplings and mutton here are worth a try, and you can also taste the rare Shanghai snack, smoked silk (smoked toad).
✔️Qibao Catholic Church
A Roman-style building with a history of 150 years, located in a small alley in a residential area in the southern part of the ancient town. It's quite hidden, and compared to the bustling Qibao Old Street, it's particularly quiet. When I went, it was not open, so I could only look at the exterior, but you can try your luck.
✔️Nan Qibao Temple
A small temple that started in the Western Jin Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,700 years. The temple is not large, but the incense is constant. There is a huge ginkgo tree planted in the courtyard, which can be seen from a distance and is particularly spectacular. In late autumn, it is full of ginkgo fruits, and you can often see monks in the temple picking them up with a bamboo basket.
The sound of ginkgo leaves rustling in the wind, falling all over the ground in golden beauty, makes people reluctant to leave.
✔️Qibao Jiao Temple
The Qibao Tower, which can be seen from a distance in Qibao Ancient Town, is located here. This is a large-scale temple group, including Qibao Tower, Daxiong Treasure Hall, Four-faced Guanyin, etc. There are many people coming to burn incense.

Qibao Old Street
Qibao Old Street is the nearest thousand-year-old town to downtown Shanghai, and it is very convenient to get there by subway. The residences, shops, and bridges in the scenic area have Ming and Qing architectural styles. The small rivers crisscross the old street, the water passes through the arch bridges, and the bustling crowds and festive decorations converge into a strong New Year atmosphere!

Is Shanghai City Walk Qibao Old Street worth a visit?
On the last half day in Shanghai, I left it to Qibao Ancient Town~
Actually, I only knew about this ancient town when I came to Shanghai, so I looked up its history on my own
⛩️Qibao Ancient Town, located in the southwest of Shanghai, was known as North Qibao Town before the Ming Dynasty. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it was famous for producing Qibao cloth and was a historical ancient town with both the natural scenery of the Jiangnan water town and a long cultural connotation.
Qibao Ancient Town is the nearest ancient town to Shanghai city, with direct subway access. Personally, I think it takes about an hour to walk around the whole place. It has the charm of Jiangnan, but the main street is like other ancient towns, full of food stalls, and some silver shops and hairpin shops~ However, the food is quite distinctive, but the things sold in the scenic area are a bit expensive, with noodles costing about 25-35 per bowl
Guide
🚇Subway: Get off at Qibao Station on Line 9, and walk about 500 meters to get there
🍚Dining: There is a Wu Maoxing local noodle shop near the subway, you can try it, the scallion oil mixed noodles are pretty good~

It's been a long time since I've been to Qibao Ancient Town, so let's go, 21
When I came out of Jing'an Central Hospital, it was 9 o'clock in the morning, still early. At this time, I usually haven't gotten up yet. Today is for coming to the hospital, so I got up early.
Since I'm out, I don't necessarily go home early, even though today is a high temperature day of 35 degrees.
It's been a long time since I've been to Qibao Town, so let's go to Qibao Town.
I arrived at Qibao Town at 9:30 in the morning.
It's a high temperature day, so there are few tourists in the ancient town scenic area, and the usually crowded 'food street' has only a few tourists. Sometimes you can take a shot with no one in sight. Such a high temperature day is really not suitable for strolling in the old streets of the ancient town.
However, I found that several new shops have opened in the scenic area. According to the news, like Xinchang Ancient Town, these are all 'new faces' relocated from Zhaojielou.
At 11 o'clock in the morning, I left the ancient town scenic area, I didn't feel like strolling around, it was too hot.

In Shanghai, there is a saying, 'Look at Pudong for ten years, the Bund for a hundred years, and Qibao for a thousand years.'
In Qibao Ancient Town, there is a north-south old street from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with old shops with vermilion doors on both sides.
During the day, the scenery is picturesque with small bridges and flowing water. At night, when the lights are first lit, large red lanterns are hung high, presenting a scene of a southern water town.
The favorite thing about coming here is the local snacks.
