Sakurai Shrine, a century-old history.
Located in the northern part of the Itoshima Peninsula, Sakurai Shrine has a history of over 400 years, dating back to the 9th year of the Kan'ei era (1632). The main hall, built in the Sankensha-zukuri style, features splendid decorations and, along with the worship hall and tower gate, is designated as an important cultural property by the Fukuoka Prefectural Government. The shrine enshrines deities brought from Ise Grand Shrine and Toyouke Grand Shrine. Notably, the shrine's architecture, which combines the main hall, middle hall, and worship hall in the 'Shinmei-zukuri' style, is a significant feature. Nestled in a serene mountain setting, the shrine's space is not large, but it is evident that all the buildings are made of ancient wood. The old-fashioned charm is palpable, with the wood's color appearing as a light shade washed by years, making the visit feel very comfortable and pleasant.
