The Saint Augustine Church (Spanish: Iglesia de San Agustín de Paoay), commonly known as the Paoay Church, is a Roman Catholic church in the Municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines. Completed in 1710, the church is famous for its distinct architecture highlighted by the enormous buttresses on the sides and back of the building.
It is declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines in 1993.
Portions of the church were damaged by two major earthquakes. In 1973, it was designated as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine government. During an excavation inside the church in 2000, a prehistoric human skeleton and fragmented ceramics were discovered and are now on display at the National Museum.

Ilocos Norte: Where History Meets Coastal Beauty
#traveldiaries #philippinestrip #ilocosnorte
Ilocos Norte is a remarkable destination that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From its stunning coastal landscapes to its well-preserved Spanish colonial architecture, the province gives travelers a unique glimpse into the Philippines' past and present. Iconic sites like the windmills of Bangui, the dramatic rock formations of Kapurpurawan, and the historic Paoay Church showcase the diversity of attractions.
What stands out for me about Ilocos Norte is its seamless combination of rugged beauty and cultural depth. The golden sand dunes, the crashing waves along Pagudpud’s beaches, and the centuries-old structures provide a mix of adventure and reflection. The province has managed to preserve its identity, allowing visitors to experience traditional Ilocano culture and cuisine, while also offering modern amenities.
In my opinion, Ilocos Norte is a fantastic destination for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience in the Philippines, where history, nature, and local traditions create a uniquely immersive journey.

If you are traveling around the region, this is worth a stop. As a Unesco World Hertiga Site, it is no longer a surprise why a lot of tourists would wanna come here wether they want to pray or just admire the beauty its architecture. It has survived numerous earthquakes already but up to this day it is still standin though restorations were done as well. It is indeed an amazing sight to behold.

The Congo Church in the Philippines has been listed as a world cultural property by UNESCO, and is shaped like a triangular tower of the Golden Pagoda. It is a typical Spanish church. It has no foundation, but it has stood for 500 years and is the spiritual pillar of the local residents. Legend has it that the holy water that oozes from the wall is quite effective and can cure all diseases, thus attracting many tourists to make a wish.
