Don't panic in Johannesburg! First, take a photo with the Mandela Square statue and pretend you're a "top influencer"?
1. Must-know before the trip (avoid pitfalls & preparation)
The best travel time is from March to May or September to November! The spring and autumn seasons have very comfortable weather, with average daily temperatures of 15-25°C. A light jacket is enough, and you can avoid peak season crowds and high hotel prices🌤️.
Safety first! Don’t wander alone at night in the old city areas (like Marshalltown). Prioritize taking Uber between attractions (make sure the license plate is official). Carry your bag crossbody in front of you and don’t show valuables⚠️; exchange some cash (small denomination rand), as some small shops don’t accept cards. Airport exchange rates are average, city banks offer better rates💰.
2. Must-visit attractions (divided into cultural & experiential)
- Cultural deep dive
1. Apartheid Museum: Pick up an audio guide at the entrance (Chinese available). The old photos, prison uniforms, and segregation zone models are very touching. It’s emotional but very meaningful. Recommended to spend 2.5 hours📜. Located at the intersection of Northern Parkway and Gold Reef Road, tickets about 150 rand per person.
2. Constitution Hill: Once a prison that held Mandela, now the Constitutional Court! The red brick walls are very photogenic. Listen to the guide tell the story of "from prison to democracy’s holy ground" and feel the weight of South Africa’s history🏛️. Free admission, but book in advance on the official website.
3. Mandela Square: A must to take a photo with the 6-meter-tall Mandela statue! The surrounding area is a bustling commercial district. When tired, sit at an outdoor café, watch people walking dogs and chatting. The evening lights create a great atmosphere📸. Located in Sandton’s 5th St, a 5-minute walk from Sandton metro station.
- Unique experiences
1. Gold Reef City: Wear miner’s clothes and go down the mine shaft to experience the daily life of 19th-century gold miners. You can even pan for gold dust by hand (if you find any, you can keep it!)✨. The park has a vintage train and roller coaster, great for kids. Tickets about 200 rand, recommend spending 3 hours.
2. Carlton Centre: Take the elevator to the 50th-floor observation deck for a 360° view of Johannesburg. On clear days, you can see distant gold mine ruins. The glass observation deck shakes a bit, so not recommended if you’re afraid of heights🌆. Tickets 60 rand. Elevator lines are long, so go right when it opens at 9 am.
3. Pilanesberg National Park: Booking a day tour is very convenient (includes pickup, drop-off, and lunch). Departure at 5 am, ride a safari vehicle to spot the "Big Five" of Africa! Lions might be sleeping, but elephants and giraffes are very common. Don’t wear bright colors or open windows to feed animals🦁. About 800 rand per person.
3. Food & Accommodation
- Must-try 3 dishes: South African BBQ (recommend "The Local Grill," ribs are juicy and go perfectly with cornmeal🍖), Bobotie (minced meat + cashew nut baked egg pie, a unique sweet and savory taste), African milk tea (with cinnamon and cardamom, a warm hot drink🥤). To save money, go to street food stalls in Maboneng district. Bunny Chow (bread filled with curry) costs only 15 rand and is filling.
- Accommodation: Choose Sandton district (safe and convenient, close to Mandela Square) or Rosebank (many artsy shops). Recommended chain hotels for good value, about 500-800 rand per night per person. Book early to get packages including breakfast🛏️.
