Takayama is a city that exudes the ancient charm of Japan, with its Edo-period culture and architecture. Most tourists stay overnight here to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of Shirakawa-go. A must-try delicacy in this city is Hida beef, which is as delicious as Kobe beef. For souvenirs, besides sake, there are Sarubobo dolls that are exclusively made and sold in the Takayama area. For those planning to stay for several nights, there are plenty of activities: start your morning with a stroll through the Miyagawa morning market, then head to the Sanmachi district to take photos with the red Nakabashi Bridge. In the afternoon, relax in an onsen and visit the Hida no Sato village. End your day with tender Hida beef and a cold beer. Spend a slow, relaxing day in the old town of Takayama, and you might find yourself recharged for another week of work.

#thingstodo Very touristy quaint shopping street lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, and snacks. It’s a long way to come for this so make sure you budget at least 2 to 3 hours to walk around and have a cuppa if you are coming to Takayama old town.An excellent place to walk through as both sides of the road are surrounded by old-fashioned traditional buildings.
These buildings contain shops of various kinds - cookie, matcha, souvenir, restaurants, sake brewery, etc. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area.
