Shanghai's outskirts, far from the city, lies the peaceful and pristine ancient town of Taicang Shaxi
Actually, there is also a Shaxi ancient town in Kunming, but this Shaxi ancient town is far away yet close at hand. It's visible and tangible.
It is located at No. 142 Baiyun Middle Road, Taicang City, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province.
Navigate to the nearby Dongan Road parking lot, about a 10-minute walk away, parking fee is 3 yuan/hour, and 1 yuan for each additional hour.
Ancient town ticket: Free (Tour time requires 1~2 hours)
Here I found a small shop of hand-painted fans, the fans are hand-painted by the boss on the spot, 15 yuan each, the price is reasonable.
The surrounding area is full of small shops owned by locals, there are also pickles made by the old lady herself, small tea houses, and you can also find some old items, etc.
There are many merchants selling local specialties in the middle, such as freshly fried meat floss, cloud cake, lard rice candy, pine nut candy, sugar painting, etc.
There are also many intangible cultural heritage handcrafts hidden in the ancient town, such as wood carving, bamboo weaving, etc. They are all made by the master on the spot, and you can buy them directly if you are interested.
This ancient town has not been fully developed, there are many original residents, basically all in the West Market Street, where the prices are very cheap, locals set up small stalls, 5 yuan/large skewer of candied haw, 10 yuan a large bag of egg rolls, 10 yuan/jin of strawberries, basically no one on weekdays, it feels like having the whole place to yourself.
The ancient architecture here is well preserved, mainly the layout of 'one river, two streets, three bridges, one island', the pace of life in the ancient town is very slow, many residents around sit at the door to chat, far from the tranquility of the city, those who like quiet can come for a walk, suitable for leisure travel! The historical and cultural heritage of Shaxi Ancient Town is rich, and it preserves the unique Ming and Qing dying buildings, the deep ancient alleys, the ancient bridges and the former residences of historical and cultural celebrities. The Qipu River, which was excavated in the Song Dynasty, runs through the town. The river is wide and there is an island in the river. It is a major feature of the ancient town of Jiangnan. The ancient houses on both sides of the river are patchwork and row upon row. The streets along the river stretch for 1.5 kilometers, telling the prosperity of Shaxis former trade. There are three ancient stone arch bridges on the river (both Taicang City cultural relics protection units): Liji Bridge, Yongqiao Bridge, and Yixing Bridge, all with typical Qing Dynasty architectural style. Shaxi is also a place where humanities gather. Wu Xiaobang, an outstanding dance master of our country, was born here. He blended dance and life ingeniously and became one of the pioneers of Chinese new dance art. Combined with the traditional culture of the ancient town, Shaxi has carefully created poetry museums, woven pavilions, dance halls, and children's funhouses, so that visitors can enjoy leisure and entertainment as well as some knowledge and culture.

Shaxi is located in the middle of Taicang City, Jiangsu Province, 50 kilometers away from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. The Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway has opened an exit here, only two hours from Shanghai to Shaxi. The ancient town of Shaxi has a long history, unique scenery and rich products. It is known as the Southeast Eighteen Town, Shaxi First Town.

Shaxi Ancient Town, the first thing that comes to mind is Dali, Yunnan, which is a major town on the ancient tea-horse road. However, in Taicang, Jiangsu, not far from Shanghai and Suzhou, there is also an ancient town of Shaxi. Not very famous, there are not many tourists, and no tickets are accepted.
Shaxi Ancient Town is already a village in the Tang Dynasty, and it has a long history than many ancient towns. In the Yuan Dynasty, it became a marketplace, and the Ming Dynasty merchants became a major commercial and trade town. At present, there are more than 600 houses and more than 4,200 houses in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, which are contiguous and fragmented.
Alleys are narrow and long, and from time to time there are local old people living in the alleys slowly coming out. By the time of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with the development of industry and commerce, a large number of merchants came into being, and it became a famous commercial and trade town.
The Song Dynasty Fan Zhongyan presided over the Qiputang that runs through the town. The river is wide and there is an olive island in the river. It was cut off when the Xinqipu River was excavated in 1954. There are three ancient stone arch bridges on the river: Liji Bridge, Yongqiao Bridge and Yixing Bridge, all with typical Qing Dynasty architectural style.
Meizu years, the town is booming. Supervising Yu Shi Su Zan's "Yu Shi Fu", Shanxi Road Yu Shi Cao Yu, the Criminal Department Langzhong Ye Yuchun and other officials, have built a government here, the street scene is good, "Shaxi Eight Views", far and near famous. The
stone arch bridge is a good place to enjoy the scenery. There are no cruise ships in the river and the water is calm.

Shaxi Ancient Town, Taicang, Jiangsu (2/4).
Shaxi Ancient Town is a typical strip-shaped water town. It is a national historical and cultural town, known for its unique river shed architecture and its complete ancient town layout of "one river, two streets, three bridges, and one island." The ancient town has a complete historical appearance and a certain scale, with cultural heritage and environmental elements that make up its historical appearance, and has high historical authenticity and typicality. It has one provincial-level cultural relic protection unit (Gong's Carved Hall) and three municipal-level cultural relic protection units (Liji Bridge, An Bridge, and Yixing Bridge), as well as the former residences of celebrities such as Cheng Muheng and Lu Jingshi, and important historical buildings such as the Yuan Changhe, Hu Jufeng, and Wan Hexiang commercial buildings.

Taicang | Shaxi Ancient Town.
| Shaxi Ancient Town.
🧚♀️When it comes to Shaxi, many people will think of Shaxi Ancient Town in Dali, Yunnan. In fact, there is also a Jiangnan water town with a history of more than 1,300 years near Shanghai - Shaxi Ancient Town!
.
🏡It is located in the central part of Taicang City, Suzhou, and is hidden in the city. It stands quietly in the bustling commercial area. Shaxi Town once enjoyed the reputation of "the first town of the 18 towns in the southeast", and it still perfectly preserves the "one river, two streets, three bridges".
.
🧡Walking in the ancient town, there are no fences in the scenic area, which are integrated with the streets. There are various Ming and Qing water buildings, ancient alleys, ancient bridges, pink and gray wall bricks, cyan tiles, red-brown wooden windows, smooth but uneven stone roads, historical and cultural celebrities' former residences, etc. Every place you see seems to be telling the life stories of the old street over the past hundreds of years.

Is Sha Xi Ancient Town really that good?
Sha Xi Ancient Town is located in the central part of Taicang and is a Jiangnan water town with a history of over 1300 years. It preserves Ming and Qing dynasty waterfront buildings and long ancient streets, with alleys, ancient bridges, rivers, and former residences of celebrities all in place.
1. Climate and Temperature

Winter is relatively cold, with average temperatures around 0℃-10℃, and you can enjoy the winter snow scenery of the ancient town.
2. Per Capita Consumption
Admission is free. For dining, snacks like wontons are affordable, and you can eat well for around 20-50 yuan per person. If you add some special souvenirs, the per capita consumption is about 100-200 yuan.

4. Notes
1. The ancient town has parking lots, and there are marked parking spaces on the roadside, but roadside parking is more expensive than parking lots. Park according to the rules to avoid fines.
2. If you visit at noon on weekdays, there are very few tourists, and the ancient town is very quiet, but many shop owners will take a nap.
3. There may be elderly people begging at the entrance of Le Yin Garden, which can be a bit abrupt.
4. Some doors have plaques numbered as "Sha Xi Town Collective Assets". Do not damage them.
Such an ancient town is worth a stroll if you pass by. If you come specifically to visit, it is recommended to stay for a few days to deeply integrate and feel the tranquility and beauty of the Jiangnan water town.

A place with wind - Shaxi Ancient Town.
🏯Walking into Shaxi Ancient Town, time seems to slow down. The bluestone slab road is winding and twisting, and the ancient buildings are scattered.
The smell of fireworks from the street shops makes people feel extremely warm.
The stream in the town is gurgling, reflecting the blue sky and white clouds. Here, the soul has a quiet habitat, everything is so beautiful and pure💖, I really don't want to leave.

Shaxi Absolutely Beautiful Homestay · Shiran Mountain House | Is it an ideal utopia?
| Is it an ideal utopia?
Shiran Mountain House
It's really too beautiful!! Every corner has been carefully designed, including the perfectly matched fresh flowers. The overall design is a rustic wooden style, with earthy rough walls, paired with a lot of wooden frames and glass, allowing sunlight to pour in anytime, anywhere, creating various shadows, and every casual photo looks great!!
The homestay has 10 rooms, and we stayed in a family suite (there are two in the homestay), where an extra bed for children can be added. The housekeeper said that this room was the one where Sister Liu Yifei stayed during the filming period. The room's lighting is also very good!! There is a glass observation bay window where you can see the central courtyard of the homestay, with green plants, flowing water, and kittens, truly a paradise. There is also a small balcony with a chair, sitting and reading is very enjoyable.
The location of the homestay is also very good, quiet within the noise, just 4 minutes away from the ancient town's Dongzhaimen, and a five-minute walk to Yujin Bridge. What's better is that it's not inside the ancient town, so cars can drive directly to the front door, which is key to not having to drag luggage over cobblestone roads.
Now let's talk about breakfast, the breakfast is amazing!! Compared to the breakfast at Xilin Garden in the previous days, this one is even better. There are two choices: Western and Chinese. The Chinese option is rice noodles, and the Western option is sandwiches, both delicious!! There's also a goodnight sweet soup.
The feeling is that the hotel owner is a designer who understands aesthetics

Shaxi Ancient Town is so lively at night
I thought Shaxi Ancient Town in Taicang was a niche place, but to my surprise, it was crowded on Saturday night. However, it was still quite pleasant, the liveliness was just right! The nearby Leyin Garden Hotel is worth recommending! It comes with its own garden, beautiful scenery, and a good mood! For dining, I recommend Xiyu Guan's pickled fish, located in an alley, freshly killed on the spot, and the taste is great!
Depart from Shanghai and arrive in Taicang within one hour, two hours from Changzhou. The city is not crowded, quiet and comfortable, with clean roads and low prices. The itinerary is rich and relaxed, with convenient and free parking at attractions, making it very suitable for weekend self-driving tours for people in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai.
🗓 Itinerary:
Day1: Shaxi Ancient Town—Taicang Museum and Art Gallery—Haiyun Dike Style Street
Day2: Nanyuan—Seventy-two Ideal Village—Liuhe Ancient Town
✅ Must Experience:
Shaxi Ancient Town
Free parking 🆓
A 1300-year-old ancient town in the south of the Yangtze River, retaining Ming and Qing waterside architecture, ancient alleys, quaint bridges, and the former residences of historical and cultural celebrities . Many residents live inside, with characteristic local snacks and handicrafts.
Food Recommendations:
Pickles, grass head cakes, Taicang pork floss, rice cakes, yunpian cakes, etc. Old Master Noodle Shop is a must-try, featured on Star TV and CCTV 👍🏻
Taicang Museum
No admission fee 🆓
Closed on Mondays 9:00-16:00
The museum is adjacent to the library, art gallery, and grand theater.
Inside the museum are five floors:
The collection includes ceramics, bronzes, paintings, jade, and many other types, with maritime artifacts and local scholar artifacts from the Yuan and Ming dynasties as the main features.
The first floor has two ships used by Zheng He on his voyages to the West, one of which can be boarded for a visit and photos 📸 The second floor displays Taicang's historical and cultural exhibits, including some indoor gardens and movies. The third floor houses the museum's collection, the Great Yuan Porcelain Warehouse, and the Loudong Painting School exhibit, etc. The fourth floor is the Taicang Revolutionary History Exhibition Hall.
Taicang Art Gallery
The art gallery has a very modern overall design, with micro-cement treated walls and tall staircases. The designer cleverly introduces natural light indoors, so even the first-floor exhibition hall is filled with sunlight. The courtyard is an imagistic garden, with large areas left blank and a few small but exquisite embellishments, providing a space for visitors to reflect after viewing the exhibitions.
Haiyun Dike Rothenburg Style Street
The overall architectural style can be said to have 'moved' the town of Rothenburg in Bavaria, Germany, to Taicang, perfectly restoring the town's appearance, with a strong German atmosphere coming to the fore.
Nanyuan
It was the private garden of Wang Wensu, a Ming dynasty chancellor, with a scene at every step, less ancient charm, more openness, more stunning than Suzhou gardens, and very worth visiting. If the parking lot is full, you can park in the alley next door and walk over. After visiting, you can have lunch at the Nanyuan Noodle Shop next door.
Seventy-two Ideal Village
At the entrance, there are some two-person and four-person bicycles and electric cars for rent. The place is super big, with sea views, market strolls, and crab catching, everything you could want . If you want to see the sea, you need to walk inside to see it, go for the sea breeze, and take amazing photos; if you're going to catch crabs, bring a net and be prepared to 'trek' through the mud; there's also a rice field and red windmills for photo opportunities. 📸
🍽 Dining Recommendations:
Gegengyuan
A local old shop, the signature is Taicang specialty pork floss bones, 13r each is really a good deal, sweet-tasting ribs
Nanyuan Noodle Shop
An authentic Suzhou-style noodle shop, thin noodles with toppings, also an old shop 🍜
80s Tea Restaurant
Recommended by locals, the most authentic and delicious Hong Kong-style food in Taicang, very busy during meal times!
Taicang has a very slow pace of life, very suitable as a weekend getaway from the city, with greenery everywhere, less commercialized ancient towns and villages by the river, really comfortable.

Taicang Ultimate Travel Guide | No Tourist Traps
🌸 Shaxi Ancient Town = Free
The ancient town is quite large and not overly commercialized. It's very photogenic when the weather is nice. Snack recommendations: grass head cake, shredded radish cake, meat floss green dumpling, Taicang meat floss (specialty). Just wandering around, you can eat your fill.
🌼 Taicang Museum and Art Gallery are free, no reservation needed. The two are close to each other, so you can check them both out together. Remember that the exhibition halls close at 16:30, so plan your time well, or you might miss out! The museum has a large ancient ship, with exhibits on all four floors, which you can visit for quite a while. The art gallery is also very photogenic outside, with its clean white architecture.
🔥 Haiyun Dike Style Street = Free
It looks deserted during the day with few people around, but at night when the lights are all on, it's beautiful. Inside, there are European-style buildings and graffiti, great for taking photos, a bit like a cultural and creative district. There are many restaurants for dining, and it's quite nice to enjoy a meal with the lake breeze! It's recommended to come at night when the lights are beautiful~
🌟 Nanyuan = Free
A beautiful garden with lots of flowers and plants. It's said that it used to require an entrance fee, a 3A tourist spot, not much different from the popular gardens in Suzhou, and definitely worth a visit.
💫 Taro Ice Cream · Taicang's First 10r/bowl
Put this first, no need to say anything else, just go for it! Really delicious! I bought coconut ice with lots of toppings!
There's watermelon, taro, coconut ice, coconut slices, crushed peanuts, taro balls~
🔥 Egg Meat Burger 6r/each, consistently delicious
Plenty of meat filling, brushed with a layer of sauce on the outside, one word! Yummy!!!!
☁️ Northeastern Grilled Cold Noodles 8r/serving
The owner is from the Northeast, very enthusiastic~ The grilled cold noodles are sour, sweet, and fragrant~ You can add fire turkey noodles, I saw many people eating it that way!
They also have cabbage rice, which looks really tasty, and the portions are huge!
SHELBY ALVAREZ
Feeling overwhelmed? Don't miss these 4 breezy spots in Dali
From north to south, the first is Shaxi Ancient Town, a place of great significance. A film crew once shot here for one and a half months, featuring Yujin Bridge, the ancient stage, Xingjiao Temple... and one of the main locations in the drama, the Breezy Tavern (Mint Coffee House). The bolete mushroom pizza is delicious, and it's recommended to try it as it appears in the drama. Every moment here makes the world seem peaceful and serene. The town is filled with delightful eateries and shops selling crafts and clothing, perfect for leisurely strolls.
The second is Zhou Cheng, where the dyeing workshop from the drama—Pu Zhen Tie-Dye Museum—is located. Here you can experience tie-dyeing and also purchase some beautiful finished products.
The third is Xizhou Ancient Town, which, to me, is the most beloved place next to Shaxi. It has a commercial vibe yet retains the original charm of the village. Besides the woodcarving and embroidery workshops in the town, there are rice fields outside the village, the 'Xu Hongdou Weeping Tree', and the 'Xie Zhiyao Xu Hongdou Horse Leading Spot'. The rice fields in winter have been harvested, leaving behind memories of the drama. The occasional electric car you encounter is identical to the one Xie Zhiyao drives in the drama. Next to the Xu Hongdou Weeping Tree is the Hetian Homestay (recommended). Xizhou has many delicious and attractive cafes, and if you have time, you can stay for a few more days.
The fourth is Fengyangyi, also an important town on the ancient Tea Horse Road. The village paths are only accessible on foot, and there are two very beautiful homestays inside. One is the Breezy Courtyard from the drama, and the other is Xie Zhiyao's home. The Breezy Courtyard is not open for tours, but you can stay or enjoy afternoon tea; Xie Zhiyao's home has been converted into a homestay, fortunately, the owner still allows visitors to tour inside. Xie Zhiyao's room has been turned into a guest room, the living room where he watched TV with his grandma has become the front desk, the adorable stable has been transformed into a tea room, and the kitchen and courtyard retain their original purposes. Fengyangyi may be small, but it's beautiful and quaint, with villagers setting up stalls along the roadside just like in the drama. There aren't many restaurants here, but you can try the dairy fan and bait block sold by the villagers.
These 4 breezy towns each have their unique flavor and have become the Yunmiao Village in the drama. I didn't meet Xie Zhiyao, but by following in Li Xian's footsteps, I also felt this tranquil and beautiful life.

Spring hiking on the century-old towns along the Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed railway line: Taicang Shaxi Ancient Town
►Historical Heritage
▪ Shaxi Ancient Town had already formed a village in the Tang Dynasty, and during the Yuan Dynasty, Tu Song moved westward, forming a market; in the Ming Dynasty, with accessible trade routes, it became a commercial hub. The street scenes improved daily, and 'The Eight Views of Shaxi' became famous near and far. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, a large number of merchants emerged, necessitating a place for cultural exchange and commercial activities.
▪ Shaxi Ancient Town was also one of the birthplaces of national industry. In the thirty-second year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, Jiangsu's first light textile industry, Jitai Sha Factory, was born on the western streets of the town.
►Strolling through the Ancient Town
▪ The layout of Shaxi Ancient Town is relatively simple, with one river, two streets, three bridges, and one island. Qipu Pond has a history of over 1000 years and was an ancient river channel excavated under the supervision of Fan Zhongyan during the Song Dynasty.
▪ The two old streets of Henan and Tangbei, built along the banks of the old Qipu River, are typical layouts of ancient towns in the south of the Yangtze River.
▪ Residential houses and shops are lined up along the streets from east to west, with north-south alleys branching off, creating a well-ordered and clustered appearance.
▪ Shuixiangtang is an important part of the fire protection system of Shaxi Ancient Town, located on the lower banks near the water, with access to the street in front and the river at the back. Generally, seven or eight households would have one Shuixiangtang, which served three functions: for the upper bank residents to fetch water and navigate boats, as a fire-fighting water access, and as a firebreak.
►Visiting Time: 1-2 hours before sunset
►Transportation: Self-driving

🌟 Highlights:
Shaxi Old Street
Wu Xiaobang's Former Residence
✍️ The old street of Shaxi Ancient Town largely retains the original appearance of the residential buildings. During the Spring Festival, there are quite a few tourists, and the parking lot is filled with vehicles bearing Shanghai or Jiangsu E license plates.
🏨 The commercialization of the ancient town is reflected outside the old street, where there are several nice homestays.

A pilgrimage to the water towns of Jiangnan - 'One River, Two Streets, Three Bridges' of Shaxi, Taicang
There are two ancient towns of Shaxi, located in Taicang, Jiangsu and Dali, Yunnan respectively. Taking advantage of the good weather before the Spring Festival, I visited the old streets of Shaxi Ancient Town in Taicang.
➡️One River refers to the Qipu that runs through the town from east to west. It was dredged in the second year of Song Jingyou (1035) by the famous minister Fan Zhongyan and has been around for nearly a thousand years. It plays an important role in both the farming of ancient ancestors and the lives of modern residents.
➡️Two Streets refer to the old streets along the river on the north and south banks of the old Qipu, which are divided into East Gate Street, Middle Market Street - West Market Street, and West Gate Street by Baiyun Middle Road. Walking along the street, you can see long windows and overhanging beams, and encounter the old charm and ancient style from time to time. Old houses and residences can be seen everywhere with green bricks and black tiles. The depth and length of the old street is rare in today's ancient towns in southern Jiangsu.
➡️Three Bridges, namely the three ancient stone arch bridges that span the Qipu and connect the old streets on the north and south banks, are the Liji Bridge, Yixing Bridge, and An Bridge. All have typical Qing Dynasty architectural styles. The three bridges curve like a rainbow, and the bridge body and shadow reflect a full moon. At present, these three ancient bridges are all cultural relics protection units in Taicang City.

It's not Dali! There is also a Shaxi Ancient Town in Suzhou
Shaxi Ancient Town is located in Taicang, Suzhou. It is a Jiangnan water town with a history of more than 1300 years and is known as the second Zhouzhuang. ‼️‼️‼️ The key point is, the scenic area is free of charge!
The waterfront stilt houses built to adapt to the waterfront life and cargo transportation, every family has a water dock, and there is a water alley every three or five households, forming the unique street architecture style of Shaxi Ancient Town. In 2005, it was listed as the second batch of 'China's Historical and Cultural Towns' by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
The overall commercial atmosphere of Shaxi Ancient Town is not very strong, so here you can see the very simple folk customs, the most real look of the world.
Fried rice candy, which is lard rice candy, is sprinkled with white sugar and osmanthus on a thick layer of fried glutinous rice. It is sweet but not greasy. There are also begonia cakes, grass head cakes, square cakes and so on. Many cakes are the special food of Shaxi Ancient Town. 💡 Recommend Lu's cake group, Song's begonia cake, Chen's egg roll.
If you have been to Zhouzhuang, Tongli and other ancient towns, I recommend you to go to Shaxi Ancient Town to experience a different ancient town style; if you have not been to any ancient town, I also recommend you to go to Shaxi Ancient Town first, because there may be what you think an ancient town should look like.

10 minutes walk from Shaxi Bus Station to Guzhen Scenic Area, the roadside is a typical view of the ancient town of Jiangnan Water Town. The entrance to the
scenic spot is covered with red lanterns. During the National Day, there are many more tourists here than usual, and the weather is very good.
A small river, along with the old streets of the ancient town, there are naturally small bridges on the river. The alleys are long and narrow, and the walls on both sides are taller. The wall is mottled, and it is the trace of the years.
From an unknown alley to the river, the bridge is in front of you. This small bridge was built in the Song Dynasty and is simple and vigorous. Unlike other ancient towns, there are no boats on the river that come and go, and it seems a bit quiet. There are many such alleys in the town of
, and tourists usually don't come in, but if you walk in inadvertently, you may have different scenery waiting for you.
There are a lot of tourists, because when they were at noon, several restaurants in the old street were full and could not find a vacancy.
From here, it is the bridge. There are many tourists on the bridge. They usually take pictures on the bridge and think that it is the most beautiful scenery. The bridge is condescending and the scenery is really good.
There is a special platform built under the bridge to let tourists take pictures and enjoy the scenery. From what point of view, the bridges are simple and vicissitudes. A small bridge carries a thousand years of history.

In the days of Shaxi, think of Haizi's poems.
Innumerable moments, I want to buy a small courtyard, live quietly and slumber, and sleep with the wind, frost and rain for the rest of my life.
has been to countless ancient towns. From Jiangnan to the border, Shaxi is one of the real ancient towns in my mind. Quiet and simple, antique, still retains the oldest architectural features. Ancient temples, ancient theaters, ancient shops, horse shops, ancient red sandstone streets, century-old ancient trees, ancient lanes, and ancient village gates.
Here, it was once brilliant. This is a gathering and distributing town on the ancient tea-horse road. It promises countless horses and horses. After thousands of years of prosperity, it has finally become a quiet and silent town of Shaxi in the historical torrent. Only the silent stone bridge, the ancient road, and the ancient street are quietly telling its past. Only the Huihui River silently brings the brilliant course of Shaxi on the ancient tea-horse road into the distant sea.
