🌳 Let me share with you a beautiful hidden gem - Shisi Temple in Yunzhong Daji! 🎊
🏯 Shisi Temple was built a long time ago and carries a rich historical flavor. Every brick and tile seems to tell a story of the past. Its unique architectural style combines the legacy of the Tang and Song dynasties with the characteristics of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The flying eaves and elegant simplicity make it a perfect photo spot 📷.
🌲 The temple is surrounded by towering ancient trees, the most famous of which is the king of the Japanese cedar trees. It is tall and strong, like a loyal guardian witnessing the changes of Shisi Temple over time. Walking around, breathing in the fresh air, and listening to the birds chirping, you will feel your soul purified.
💕 Here, you can temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of the city, immerse yourself in the tranquility, and experience the unique charm of the perfect blend of history and nature. I highly recommend you to visit this place. I'm sure you'll fall in love with it once you come 🥰.

Shisi Temple, the filming location of Black Myth: Wukong - the most beautiful ancient temple in Zhejiang.
🍃In the rainy land of Zhejiang, ancient wooden buildings before the Yuan Dynasty are rare. The well-preserved Shisi Temple is a miracle. Let's walk into this ancient temple in the deep mountains, travel through time for a thousand years, and feel its quiet standing.🍃
🍃Outside the temple gate, the first thing that catches your eye is the 1,500-year-old Cryptomeria King. It used to be more than 50 meters high. Although it was only 28 meters high after being struck by lightning, its diameter is nearly 5 meters. The hollow shape of the trunk still makes people feel its vicissitudes and strength. The mountain gate is small and simple, with a thousand-year-old cypress standing on both sides, one towering into the sky, and the other lying outside the wall, with branches stretched out, which is thought-provoking.
🍃Shisi Temple is composed of a series of ancient buildings, including the mountain gate, Heart Sutra Bell Tower, Daxiong Hall, Sanqing Hall, Ma Xian Palace, Mei's Ancestral Hall, etc. These buildings were built in the tenth year of Shaoxing in the Song Dynasty (1140) and were originally the tomb huts of the fifth son of the Mei family. In the sixteenth year of Yuan Zhi (1356), the Shisi Taoist Temple was established, and the Daxiong Hall retained a large number of original components from the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The Heart Sutra Bell Tower was built in the Ming Dynasty. The all-wooden tenon-and-mortise structure and the bucket arch joints show the exquisite craftsmanship of ancient Chinese architecture. The nearby Ma Xian Palace is a Qing Dynasty building, with several generations living together, showing the architectural style of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
🍃The interior of the main hall is not painted, mainly in brown and white, which is solemn and solemn. Even in late autumn, you can still see the growth of moss in the hall. If it is the rainy season in spring and summer, the moss marks are even more green on the steps. Here, every inch of moss seems to be telling the story of history.

Travel back in time to the most beautiful ancient buildings in Zhejiang!
[A thousand-year-old temple hidden in the mountains and surrounded by ancient charm]
The temple is surrounded by mountains, with ancient trees towering over the temple. The Muhe River flows past the temple and forms a spectacular waterfall at the cliff. There are no monks or fireworks in the temple, only ancient buildings and traces of the years that have passed for thousands of years.
After passing through the Huguan Bridge and going up the steps, the ancient cypress tree lies in front of the door. As soon as you step in, time seems to stand still. Walking through a dirt wall and stone road, the courtyard is covered with deep green moss, and the ancient buildings are independent. The artistic conception of "moss marks on the steps are green, and the grass color enters the curtain green" is presented in front of you. Most of the time, I am the only one in the temple. Walking around, stopping and stopping, empty and clear, if you are not on the scene, you can't experience this feeling.
[The ultimate aesthetics of the ancestors, the most beautiful ancient buildings in Zhejiang with the most Song style]
Shisi Temple was built in the Southern Song Dynasty, with buildings such as Shanmen, Bell Tower, Main Hall, Sanqing Hall, Ma Xian Palace, and Mei's Ancestral Hall.

The temple currently has the mountain gate, bell tower, and Mahavira Hall
Shisi Temple, located at the southern end of Xier Village, Daji Township, Jingning She Autonomous County, Zhejiang Province, was first built in the tenth year of Shaoxing in the Southern Song Dynasty (1140). It was originally the tomb-keeping hut of Mei Yuanyuan. After expansion and renovation, it became a religious building that integrates Buddhist and Taoist cultures. The temple currently has the mountain gate, bell tower, Mahavira Hall, and other ancient buildings with characteristics from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It is a unique type in the Yuan and Ming architectural system of Zhejiang and is also a national key cultural relic protection unit.

An ancient temple without Buddha, monks, or incense
The "Yunzhong Daji - Shisi Temple" in Jingning County, Lishui, Zhejiang, is located in Jingning She Autonomous County, Lishui. The entrance fee is 40 yuan.
Due to inconvenient transportation, it is recommended to drive there. There are many mountain roads, so please be careful.
To this day, there is not a single Buddha statue or scripture.
More historical relics are stored in the Mei Family Ancestral Hall on the right.
However, the thousand-year-old Chinese cedar is still lush, and the crabapple flowers bloom every year in front of the gate.
There is no incense burner, no prayer strips, and no place for religious artifacts in the courtyard.
Even the stone bricks previously laid have been removed.
This shows the restraint in cultural relic protection and tourism development here.
The rare Song and Yuan dynasty religious architecture itself
also makes it particularly unique in Zhejiang and even nationwide.
One must visit in person to truly appreciate it.
Public transportation: High-speed train to "Lishui" station, then take a bus from Lishui to Jingning County, and a bus from Jingning to Yunzhong Daji.
Besides Shisi Temple, the Yunzhong Daji Scenic Area also includes attractions such as Xuehuaji and Xiaozuo Terraces. If you have time, you can visit them all.

Shisi Temple | A Millennium-Old Temple Hidden in the Mountains
This ancient temple, with a history of over 1500 years, is not very large in scale and has no Buddha statues inside, making it appear empty. However, the moment you step inside, the tranquility you feel makes you put down your camera and stop thinking, as if time has frozen at that moment.
Here's the highlight: This attraction is pet-friendly!
Shisi Temple is located at the southern end of Er Village in Daji Township, Jingning She Autonomous County, Zhejiang Province, China, at the foot of Baixiang Mountain. It is an ancient architectural complex of great historical and cultural value.
Its origins can be traced back to the Shaoxing period of the Song Dynasty. Initially, it was the tomb-keeping hut of Mei Yuanxi, known as 'Shisi Courtyard.' In the 16th year of Zhizheng in the Yuan Dynasty (1356), the 19th generation descendant of the Mei family expanded it into 'Shisi Daochang,' officially establishing Shisi Temple. During the Xuande period of the Ming Dynasty, Shisi Courtyard was renamed to a temple, which is the current Shisi Temple. The temple continued to expand during the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, forming its current scale.
It is also an ancient architectural complex that integrates the architectural features of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties. The temple faces east and consists of many parts, including the mountain gate, bell tower, main hall, Sanqing Hall, Maxian Palace, and Mei Family Ancestral Hall. The entire complex covers an area of about 2700 square meters, with a building area of about 1250 square meters.
In front of the temple stands the King of Cryptomeria, with a trunk diameter of 4.47 meters and a circumference of 13.4 meters. Originally, the tree was 47 meters high, but the main trunk was struck by lightning and broken, leaving it now at a height of only 28 meters. Experts have verified that the King of Cryptomeria is over 1500 years old, making it an extremely rare ancient tree both domestically and globally.
The unique feature of the King of Cryptomeria is a door-like hole at its root, through which a person can easily pass. The interior of the tree hole is spacious enough to accommodate more than 10 people sitting around for a meal. Although the trunk is hollow, the branches on both sides are still full of vitality, showcasing its strong life force.
🎫: Yunzhong Daji Pass 40 RMB, free before 8:00 AM. Besides Shisi Temple, there are other attractions like Xuehuaji Waterfall to visit.
🚙: Highly recommended to drive yourself. It is about 50 kilometers from Jingning city center. Although it is a mountain road, the road conditions are good. Out-of-town visitors can take a high-speed train to Lishui and then rent a car or hire a car to get there.
🚌: Take the high-speed train to Lishui Station, then take a bus from Lishui to Jingning. There are many departures. After arriving in Jingning, take a bus to Daji. There are three buses daily, departing from Jingning at 8:10, 12:25, and 14:10, and from Daji at 6:40, 9:40, and 12:40. The fare is 11.5 RMB.
🏠: You can stay in Jingning city. The village where Shisi Temple is located is very beautiful. If conditions permit, you can stay in the village. Many locals have converted old houses into homestays. There are many places worth visiting around.

The mundane clouds and mist of Shisi Temple in Jingning
Daji Township in Jingning is known as the 'Daji in the Clouds.' If it is a paradise in the mountains, then Shisi Temple is the soul of Daji. This temple, which combines Buddhist and Taoist elements, dates back to the Song and Yuan dynasties. Several thousand-year-old junipers and towering Chinese cedars stand alongside the ancient temple. Crossing a gate and passing through a corridor, the courtyard is deep and serene, the mountains are high and the view is far-reaching. There is no incense burning in the world, yet one can see all the mundane clouds and mist.

After exploring Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, I found a truly underrated and interesting small town
After traveling through Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai, I finally found a lesser-known, less crowded small town in Zhejiang—'Jingning'.
Jingning is located in Lishui City and is the only She Autonomous County in China, offering a rare glimpse of minority culture in Jiangsu and Zhejiang 🏯
The scenery here is stunning, with unique attractions such as Yunzhong Daji, Shisi Temple, and Shexiang Ancient City. Traveling here allows you to avoid the crowds.

⛰️ Must-Visit in Jingning
1️⃣ Shisi Temple
🎫 Ticket: 40r
For this thousand-year-old temple in the deep mountains, I traveled hundreds of kilometers to Yunzhong Daji in Jingning. Shisi Temple was built in the Song Dynasty and is considered the most beautiful temple in China. It has no Buddha statues or incense but retains the extremely beautiful and simple architectural style of the Song Dynasty 🎐 Crossing the thousand-year-old cypress tree at the entrance feels like stepping through a time portal, allowing you to converse directly with ancient people.
Besides Shisi Temple, the nearby King of Cryptomeria and Xuehuaji Waterfall are also worth visiting, all included in the Yunzhong Daji ticket.
2️⃣ Shexiang Ancient City
🎫 Free
Shexiang Ancient City is also known as Phoenix Ancient City. The She people worship the phoenix 🐦🔥, and this place is a concentrated display of She architectural style. When I visited, there were almost no tourists, making it a bit deserted. But the She architectural complex, reminiscent of 'Spirited Away,' made it feel very worthwhile.
Apart from She architecture, I found the most beautiful spot to be the Millennium Bridge by the river in the ancient city. The distant mountains, mist, river, and ancient bridge resemble a landscape painting ☁️
Shisi Temple and Shexiang Ancient City can each be explored for half a day. If you have more time, you can visit the 📍She Nationality Museum in the county to experience local history and customs, which is very interesting.
🚗 About Transportation & Accommodation
Driving can directly reach each attraction. For public transportation, you can refer to:
Lishui High-Speed Rail Station➡️Lishui Bus Station➡️Jingning Bus Station
🏨 It is recommended to stay near Jingning Bus Station, where there are many hotels, and transportation and dining are very convenient.
I stayed in Jingning for two days and marveled at how Zhejiang hides such a unique small town. It is not commercialized like many other places, making it a true treasure in my heart.

I have found the most beautiful ancient temple in China hidden deep in the mountains
When visiting Lishui in Zhejiang, I was deeply attracted by a thousand-year-old temple hidden in the mountains—the 'Shisi Temple'.
This temple, built during the Southern Song Dynasty, is well-preserved but has no Buddha statues or incense offerings. It's so off the beaten path that there are hardly any tourists, with only a giant Cryptomeria tree for company🌲
Stepping over the broken thousand-year-old cypress at the entrance is like traveling back a thousand years.
🎐 About Shisi Temple
Amazed that there is such a secluded temple in China, I traveled hundreds of kilometers just to seek its true face.
1️⃣ Shisi Temple was built in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era of the Southern Song Dynasty, and it has been renovated during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The architecture still retains the ancient style of the Song Dynasty. It consists of the main hall, the Hall of the Three Pure Ones, the Ma Xian Palace, and the bell tower. The ancient buildings and the naturally grown moss are extremely beautiful❗️
2️⃣ There is nothing inside the Shisi Temple, no Buddha statues, and no incense offerings. Some say that Buddha is in the heart.
3️⃣ The temple was once the tomb-guarding hut of the Mei family in the village and later evolved into a temple. The Mei family ancestral hall nearby records more history.
4️⃣ Next to the temple, the Cryptomeria tree king is over 1500 years old. Unfortunately, after being struck by lightning, its height is only 28 meters, but it is still very spectacular.
💡💡 Visiting tips
🎫: Shisi Temple is located in Jingning She Autonomous County, Lishui City, within the Yunzhong Dajing scenic area, and the entrance fee for the scenic area is 40 yuan. In addition to Shisi Temple, the Xuehua Ji waterfall is also worth visiting.
🚗: Regarding transportation: You can get there by self-driving or public transport. My route was: first take the high-speed train to Lishui Station➡️Take a bus from Lishui Station to Jingning Bus Station➡️Buy a ticket to 'Dajing' at Jingning Bus Station, 11.5 yuan per person, the journey takes about 1.5h. The bus schedules to Dajing are 8:10, 9:35, 12:25, 14:40, and the last return bus is at 15:00.
I stayed here for half a day, and including myself, only a few tourists came, quietly appreciating the beauty of Shisi Temple🎐
I am grateful that Shisi Temple is hidden deep in the mountains, away from the hustle and bustle of the outside world, which has preserved its transcendent and secular temperament.

Jingning, Lishui | Clouds Over Daji · Shisi Temple
Clouds Over Daji · Shisi Temple. The mountains are silent and the clouds are deep, searching for a piece of tranquility hidden in the deep mountains.
Coming to an extremely niche place, Jingning is sparsely populated, and even fewer people are at Shisi Temple.
Here comes the no-nonsense guide.
Take the high-speed train to Lishui Station.
Right outside the high-speed train station is the Lishui Bus Terminal. Buy a bus ticket directly to Jingning. The journey takes 1-1.5h.
Shisi Temple is located deep in the mountains of Jingning.
You can either drive or take the bus to Shisi Temple.
For accommodation, it is recommended to stay in the town of Jingning. Choose a bus near Jingning Bus Terminal to Shisi Temple, heading towards Daji. There are buses at 8:10, 12:25, and 14:10, with the journey taking 1.5-2h.
Shisi Temple and Clouds Over Daji have a joint ticket for 40 yuan. The ticket office is at the gate of Shisi Temple.
Since Shisi Temple and Clouds Over Daji are not together, keep your ticket after leaving Shisi Temple as you will need it for the next site. Inside Shisi Temple, there is a thousand-year-old Cryptomeria tree, the oldest Thuja. The temple is empty, with no Buddha statues or incense, offering a rare tranquility. Next to it is the Mei family ancestral hall, with the ancestors of the Mei family still placed in the main hall.
Shisi Temple was also the location for this year's Lululemon Spring Festival advertisement, featuring Michelle Yeoh and Wing Chun dancers.
Leaving Shisi Temple for Clouds Over Daji, there is a large expanse of rice fields between the two attractions, which is particularly pleasing to the eye.
Walking on the path beside the rice fields, with fine rain falling from the sky and looking at the mist winding through the distant mountains, it feels like a paradise.
Due to its location deep in the mountains, there are few tourists.
Take the bus back to the county town from the mountain. There are buses at twelve o'clock and three o'clock, with the last bus at three o'clock.
It's rare to find a place with few people and beautiful scenery during the May Day holiday.
Next door, Yunhe Terraces are crowded with people, but here it is serene and peaceful.
If you come to Lishui and want to recuperate, why not try walking in the rain in search of spring and take a deep breath in the forest?

The existing temple covers an area of 1,193 square meters, consisting of the mountain gate, Mahavira Hall, Sanqing Hall, Heart Sutra Bell Tower, Ma Xian Palace, etc. It is an ancient temple building with a Han-style layout, preserving the architectural style of the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with a long history, simple and elegant, a rare architectural spectacle of 'the same site for temple, academy, and Taoist temple, the same hall for Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and the same furnace for Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism'.
-
'Ancient Cypress at the Temple Gate'

At an altitude of a kilometer, Zhejiang's most beautiful ancient temple traverses a millennium of time and space
There are no red walls or clay Bodhisattvas, where all connections come and go freely.
This Buddha-less and deity-less Sishi Temple presents another possibility for ancient architecture: nothingness.
Time stands still here, displaying the beauty of demise to all who visit.
🏡 Sishi Temple was founded in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era (1140) during the Song Dynasty and is a key national cultural heritage site. Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty bestowed the name 'Sishi Academy' in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era. In the first year of the Hongwu era (1368) of the Ming Dynasty, Chengyi Earl Liu Ji inscribed the name 'Sishi Daochang'. In the first year of the Xuande era (1426), it was renamed Sishi Temple. The existing temple complex covers an area of 1,193 square meters and consists of the mountain gate, the Mahavira Hall, the Hall of the Three Pure Ones, the Heart Sutra Bell Tower, and the Ma Xian Palace, forming an ancient temple complex with a Han-style layout. It preserves the architectural style of the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, with a long history and simple elegance. The temple is a rare architectural spectacle that combines a temple, a shrine, and an academy in one location, spanning the Song, Ming, and Qing dynasties, and harmonizes Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism.
🌳 Next to the ticket office of Sishi Temple, there is a 'Cryptomeria King' that is over 1,500 years old. Originally over 50 meters tall, it now stands at 28 meters due to a lightning strike that damaged the top of the tree, and the trunk is hollow. Behind the mountain gate of Sishi Temple is another ancient tree, a 17-meter-tall thorny cypress, also aged 1,500 years. These ancient trees have been guarding the ancient temple for a millennium.
⛩️ The Ma Xian Palace is a Qing Dynasty building that worships the goddess Lady Ma. It is said that the original site was elsewhere before being relocated here.
🛖 The Heart Sutra Bell Tower was built during the Ming Dynasty. It is a wooden structure with three floors and a hip-and-gable roof. The building is supported by four robust pillars and connected by a precise mortise-and-tenon structure and bracket sets, making it a remarkable sight. The third floor once housed a Heart Sutra bronze bell, weighing 800 jin (approximately 400 kg). The bell is inscribed with the full text of the Buddhist 'Heart Sutra' and its sound could be heard for more than 30 li (approximately 15 km).
🏯 The Mahavira Hall was built in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era (1140) of the Song Dynasty and is the most well-preserved Song Dynasty ancient building in the south of the Yangtze River. According to the 'Mei Family Genealogy', Mei Yuan, the fifth-generation descendant of the Mei family, was six years old when his grandfather passed away. He observed filial piety and mourning for three years, with utmost sincerity. Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty heard of this and, after investigating the facts, issued an imperial edict on the tenth day of the eleventh month of the tenth year of the Shaoxing era to the Ministry of Rites, generously bestowing silk and honoring the individual as 'Filial Child' and the residence as 'Sishi Academy'.

⭕ The site shares a joint ticket with the Yunzhong Dajue Scenic Area, and it's a 10-minute walk from the Snowflake Dajue to Sishi Temple.
⭕ Drone photography can capture the entire architectural structure of the temple, almost like CG modeling.
⭕ For photography, the evening light is more beautiful, so it is recommended to wait until after 3 pm.

The Sishi Temple in spring is an ideal world for humans

Stepping into Sishi Temple is like entering a world beyond the mundane. The ancient architectural complex stands quietly, with each brick and tile bearing a thousand years of history. The wind blows, the bells at the eaves sway gently, making a crisp and pleasant sound, as if telling ancient legends.

✅Best Travel Time: March-June, September-November
Sishi Temple is not only an ancient temple but also a place where people can find peace of mind. Here, you can let go of the troubles of the world and quietly feel the tranquility and peace. It's as if opening this door is like returning to the Southern Song Dynasty in 1140!

A flirtation between the soul and nature—healing
👍 Most recommended: No matter how many times you look back, 'Shisi Temple' always appears calmly in your sight. Without monks, offerings, or incense, it was initially built in the tenth year of the Shaoxing era of the Song Dynasty (1140), and has undergone repairs and expansions during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. It has traversed a thousand years of history, filled with the dust of time but permeated with another kind of Zen that reaches deep into your soul.
🌟: The ancient tree king in the temple has reached 1500 years old. Although its trunk is hollow, its crown remains lush. There are many ancient trees in the scenic area that are over a thousand years old, which have shared the warmth and coldness of the world with the ancient temple for a millennium. The green mountains, green tiles, ancient trees, wooden buildings, gentle breeze, and the whispering birds, in the harmony of the blue sky, are so peacefully timeless. Let your mood fly free, empty your mind, and your soul will find its own place to return.

The most beautiful ancient building in southern Zhejiang, hidden deep in the dense forest
🔍Zhejiang has many famous temples, such as the Lingyin Temple on the West Lake, the Guoqing Temple in the chaotic world, but the most yearning in my heart is still the Shisi Temple.
⛩️Shisi Temple is located in Jingning, Lishui, hidden in the mountains, for a long time no tourists know, under the care of 1500-year-old Cryptomeria fortunei, through more than 700 years, quietly staying on the hillside, with the mountains and trees, everything is quiet.
🏯The main hall of Shisi Temple has been identified as a building of the Yuan Dynasty, and the lower eaves were added during the Ming Dynasty. There is also a bell tower from the Ming Dynasty and two buildings from the Qing Dynasty in the courtyard. The three "generations" of Yuan, Ming and Qing are in the same hall.
🏆Nowadays, as a key cultural relic protection unit, Shisi Temple no longer has Buddha statues and incense burners. The empty buildings are even more mysterious, like a silent old man, standing quietly.
📍Address: No.1, Xian Di, Dajue Township, Jingning She Autonomous County, Lishui City, Zhejiang Province

Through the gate of time and space, I found the most beautiful thousand-year-old temple in Zhejiang.
Lishui is really a treasure of a good place.
Except for Songyang, Jinyun.
I found a niche thousand-year-old temple ⛩️ in Jingning.
If not seen with one's own eyes.
I almost thought it was modeling ❗❗❗
The fallen ancient tree of a thousand years. Blocking the road.
In the next second, we will travel through time and space.
⛩️Location▶️Sisi Temple
🎈Address ▶️ West Second Village, Daxi Township, Jingning She Autonomous County
🚖Transportation▶️It is recommended to drive by yourself as the mountain roads are narrow.
🕐Opening time▶️Doors open at 8am
The temple is located on Mount Baixiang at an altitude of over 1000 meters. It was first built in the Southern Song Dynasty and has been continuously repaired since then. Now it preserves parts such as the mountain gate, bell tower, main hall, Sanqing Hall, Maxian Palace, Meishi Ancestral Hall, etc. The buildings here have basically retained their original appearance, and are restored to their original state. Looking at the ancient trees and buildings intertwined and integrated, covered in moss, it feels like traveling through time and space. For those who like ancient architecture, you can appreciate the wooden structure and wood carvings here, which are well preserved.
🌟Check-in strategy
✅This place is a joint ticket with the Yunzhong Daxuan Scenic Area, and they are usually visited together.
✅Drone aerial photography can show the entire architectural structure of the temple, as if it were CG modeling.
✅If you want to take photos, the evening light is more beautiful. It is recommended to wait until after 3pm.
✅There aren't many dining options nearby, remember to bring some dry food.
Lishui is really a treasure trove of tourist cities, and Songyang and Jinyun are also very suitable for spring and summer tourism in the near future, especially on rainy days when the clouds and mist are lingering. It is worthy of the reputation of a fairyland.
