Check out the giant Ming Dynasty clay sculptures in Lantian, Xi'an.
🏨 Shuilu Temple
📍Address: At the foot of Wangshun Mountain, Puhua Town, Lantian County, Xi'an.
🚉Transportation:
Navigate to "Shuilu Temple". There is a parking lot and Lantian snacks at the entrance.
🌟Highlights:
Lantian County is about a 50-minute drive from Xi'an. After passing through winding mountain roads, you will find a small temple at the foot of the mountain. This is the ancient Shuilu Temple.
Many people know about it because it is one of the filming locations for the popular game Black Myth: Wukong. It is the most low-key and least known location!
❤Recommended:
The inconspicuous main hall of Shuilu Temple is home to over 3,700 Ming Dynasty hanging sculptures of gods and Buddhas. Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism are all represented here.
Each sculpture is exquisite, with continuous story-like wall sculptures and rare bearded Guanyin statues!
The clay sculptures here were made by Shanxi craftsmen, just like those at Xiaoxitian and Donglin Temple. The clay sculptures cover the walls, beams, and ceilings of the main hall. Every detail and story is worth seeing!
However, due to years of disrepair, some clay sculptures have been damaged, revealing the bamboo and wood cores and faded colors. This is a reminder of the passage of time. You should see them while you can, as they may not be around forever!
👍Most recommended:
Photography is now allowed, but some areas are fenced off. We hope these precious clay sculptures can be well protected and restored. If you visit, remember not to use flash!
📝Tips:
There are also many modern clay sculptures in the Xiaowuzhen Temple opposite Shuilu Temple. However, the craftsmanship and aesthetics are vastly different from the Ming Dynasty clay sculptures at Shuilu Temple. If you have time, you can also check them out!
🍽Dining:
The annual temple fair at Shuilu Temple is very lively. If you can catch the temple fair, you can enjoy a feast of carbs!

Xi'an
Shuilu Temple
Black Myth: Wukong
One of Xi'an's lesser-known attractions: Shuilu Temple
Recommended for those who love ancient Chinese architecture, Buddha statues, and sacred images!
This attraction is small, but the highlights are all concentrated on the walls of a small room. The lighting inside is dim, and only the naked eye can appreciate the exquisite and stunning details!
This is the first time I've seen such a three-dimensional continuous wall sculpture, and it tells a story. I'm really impressed! The ideas and craftsmanship of the ancients can really make us proud!
A few things to note:
You can take photos inside, but you can't use flash or touch anything! Currently, the last entry time is 4:30 pm (I know because I arrived at 4:15 pm and almost wasn't allowed in). If you like to sleep in, remember to plan ahead!
The entrance to the scenic area is also very lively, with villagers selling mountain goods, wild fruits, and local snacks. I even saw some Chinese dates! It brought back childhood memories in an instant. It must have been a snack for many people when they were kids! There are also some natural walnuts, wild kiwis, persimmons, etc. I bought some to try, and they were delicious. A local friend reminded me that some of them are processed in factories, so be sure to tell the difference!
Looking forward to seeing more unique photos!

Explore the Shuilu Temple in Lantian: A fusion of history and art.
With the release of Black Myth: Wukong, the Shuilu Temple in Xi'an has become a hot spot. Today, let's take a virtual tour of the Shuilu Temple.
The Shuilu Temple was built in the Ming Dynasty and is a temple dedicated to Guanyin. According to historical records, the temple was originally built by a compassionate monk to pray for good weather and a good harvest for the local people. After hundreds of years of wind and rain, the Shuilu Temple has not only become a major cultural heritage site in Lantian County, but has also attracted countless tourists and scholars to visit and study.
The most unique feature of the Shuilu Temple is its interior carvings. The temple houses a large number of exquisite painted clay sculptures and wood carvings, among which the Ming Dynasty Shuilu paintings are the most famous. These works of art are not only exquisite in craftsmanship and vibrant in color, but each one tells a Buddhist story, vividly recreating the world of ancient beliefs.
The clay sculptures in the temple are lifelike, with more than 1,000 Buddha statues and gods, as if they could walk off the wall at any time. These clay sculptures not only showcase superb craftsmanship, but also reflect all aspects of social life at the time, and are important materials for studying Ming Dynasty folklore and religious culture.
The Shuilu Temple is located between the green mountains and rivers of Lantian County, with a quiet and pleasant environment, like a paradise. In front of the temple is a small stream with clear water, which complements the tranquil atmosphere of the temple. When the morning mist surrounds the beams, accompanied by the sound of bells and chanting, the entire Shuilu Temple seems to be shrouded in a mysterious veil, inspiring awe.
Today, the Shuilu Temple is not only a tourist attraction, but also an important place for local cultural heritage. Every year, temple fairs and various religious activities are held here, attracting many believers and tourists to worship and sightsee. Through these activities, the Shuilu Temple not only continues the ancient tradition of faith, but also provides a window for modern people to understand and experience historical culture.

Shuilu Temple, Lantian County, Xian
The temple was built during the Sui and Tang dynasties and was originally the Shuilu Hall of Wuzhen Temple. It was later restored by the Qin Fan King of the Ming Dynasty over a period of more than five years. Today, it houses over 3,000 clay sculptures.
🌟 Highlights
The colored clay wall sculptures in the Daxiong Hall are the essence of the Shuilu Temple.
1️⃣ In the center are Sakyamuni, the Medicine Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha, with Kasyapa and Ananda standing on either side of Sakyamuni. The backlight features four Buddhas, eight Bodhisattvas, four Vajras, eight Dharma Protectors, etc.
2️⃣ The side walls are decorated with murals that depict the life story of Sakyamuni and various:
Landscapes and architecture: bridges, gardens, waterfalls, pavilions, towers, and pagodas
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas: various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, 24 heavenly kings, 500 Arhats crossing the sea, 1,000 people listening to the scriptures, and a statue of Sakyamuni entering Nirvana
As well as birds, beasts, and Qilin, etc. It's quite interesting to slowly search and observe.
3️⃣ The 24 divine generals at the bottom: each has a different expression and posture, holding various weapons, and is majestic and domineering. Their facial features and shapes are exaggerated, and their aura is fully open.
The rear hall is currently under maintenance, but you can still see 80% of the wall sculptures.
With the popularity of cultural and ancient buildings, you can take photos in the hall, just don't use flash.

💫 Shui Lu Temple has always been famous for preserving ancient exquisite and rare colored sculptures, the Daxiong Bao Hall preserved more than 3,700 clay sculptures are known as "wall sculpture treasures", known as "China's second Dunhuang"
📍Location: Yangxie Village, Puhua Town, Lantian County, Xi'an City
🌟Highlights:
✅ Mentioning Bluefield, most people's first reaction is Bluefield ape man, Bluefield jade and other familiar things. But in fact, on top of the feng shui treasure land of Lam Tin, there is still a temple known as "China's second Dunhuang", Yi Shui Lu Temple. The most famous of Shuilu-an is the Shuilu-an colored sculpture complex!
✅ Shui Lu An Color Sculpture integrates painting, round carving, relief carving, ink carving art techniques, the walls, beams, columns are inlaid with more than 3,700 statues of characters and natural things. In character sculpture, the expressions, eyes, movements and storylines of characters are vividly and realistically represented by serial painting. There are only a handful of such well-preserved and richly beautiful colored sculptures in the country.
✅ The Shuilu Temple, built in the Sui and Tang Dynasties, was originally the Shuilu Temple in Wuzhen Temple. After the ups and downs, during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, Zhu Huaiyuan, the king of the Qin vassal, spent five years to repair the civil engineering, carefully carve the wall sculptures, and enshrined the Shuilu Temple as a family worship hall Mother, renamed the Water and Land Temple to the Water and Land Temple.
✅ Contemporary, in order to better protect the colored sculpture, Xi'an Cultural Protection Restoration Center applied to the Shaanxi Provincial Cultural Relics Bureau to cooperate with the United States to carry out the use of "three-dimensional scanning and digital image production technology", in 2004 shooting and production of the book "Image Water and Land Temple" , color printing throughout the book, presents the colored sculptures of Suiluan "permanently" with beautiful scans one after another.
✅ Although the reputation of "China's second Dunhuang" is slightly exaggerated, but it is indeed worth a look. And due to changes in the climate and environment, it is said that the colored plastic will peel and crack to varying degrees every year, or it will be gone after an earthquake, so it is really a glance less!

Xi'an Surrounding Tour|Lantian • Shuilu Temple, the same filming location as Black Myth: Wukong in Xi'an
👍 Most Recommended: I believe everyone has recently been overwhelmed by that 'monkey'! Come to Lantian Shuilu Temple to see the world's first colored continuous wall sculptures with your own eyes. You will be repeatedly shocked by the extremely intricate Chinese aesthetics of these sculptures of gods and Buddhas created by our ancestors! A visual feast that is well worth the trip!
❤️ Recommended Reason: Shuilu Temple is famous for its well-preserved Ming Dynasty wall sculptures and is known as 'China's second Dunhuang'. It is one of the four major ancient colored hanging sculptures in China, along with Shuanglin Temple in Pingyao, Xiaoxitian in Xixian, and Guanyin Hall in Changzhi. Shuilu Temple was originally the Shuilu Hall of Wuzhen Temple during the Tang Dynasty, later destroyed by war, and rebuilt as a family temple by Zhu Huaizong, a prince of the Qin dynasty, during the Ming Dynasty.
🌈 Scenic Features: The Shuilu Hall is the essence of the entire temple. The colored clay wall sculptures of Shuilu Temple are all inside the main hall, divided into four parts: the south and north gable walls, the two walls of the central compartment, and the eaves wall. The wall sculpture group integrates painting, round sculpture, relief, and carving techniques, with over 3,700 statues of people and natural objects embedded on the walls, beams, and columns. It is known as the 'treasure of wall sculptures'. Unlike the splendid beauty of Xiaoxitian, Shuilu Temple's simplicity gives a sense of historical vicissitudes and aesthetic beauty. These clay sculptures are lifelike, each vividly portrayed, presenting a magnificent visual feast in a small space. They are not isolated but collectively narrate stories like a series of comic strips. Once you understand them, it feels like stepping into a fantastical world of gods. Witnessing it in person, you will be deeply impressed by the ingenious designs of ancient craftsmen! The reputation of 'the world's first colored continuous wall sculptures' and 'China's second Dunhuang' is well-deserved!
🕐️ Opening Hours: 09:00~17:00, last entry at 16:30.

Xi'an Surrounding Tour ∣ Check-in at the Filming Location of 'Black Myth: Wukong', Don't Miss Xiawuzhen Temple
🌈 Scenic Features: Xiawuzhen Temple, once the lower courtyard of Wuzhen Temple, is opposite to Shuilu Temple. In fact, Shuilu Temple is the Shuilu Hall in Wuzhen Temple, which has now been divided into two. The popularity of China's first '3A' game 'Black Myth: Wukong' has also brought attention to Shuilu Temple and Xiawuzhen Temple. Wuzhen Temple, one of the ancestral temples of the Pure Land Sect of Chinese Buddhism, has a construction history dating back to before the Western Jin Dynasty. The high monk Jingye built it by imperial decree, and it was officially named 'Wuzhen Temple'. By the early Kaiyuan period of the Tang Dynasty, it had expanded to include both upper and lower courtyards. The temple is built on the northern foothills of Zhongnan Mountain, with steep cliffs, winding streams, lush forests, and flying waterfalls. It has been known as the 'Holy Place of Immortals' since ancient times. 👍👍👍 The Great Buddha Hall in Xiawuzhen Temple features flying beams and painted rafters. Inside the hall, there is a large reclining Buddha made of clay, with a serene expression and a radiant Buddha light. It is the second largest painted clay reclining Buddha in the world today. In recent years, some wall sculptures have also been restored inside the hall, but the artistic level is slightly inferior to the Ming Dynasty wall sculptures in the opposite Shuilu Temple. ❤️❤️❤️ The upper Wuzhen Temple is located halfway up the mountain, with two hiking routes. One is the North Gate, with an entrance fee of 20 yuan, a gentle slope, and a long path, taking about 40 minutes to reach the ancient temple. The other is the East Gate, free of charge, with a steep slope and a short path, taking about 20 minutes to reach the ancient temple. Both routes are very quiet, shaded by greenery, and exceptionally refreshing. Here, you can visit the temple, walk through bamboo forests, explore the Tang Dynasty pagoda forest, and slowly appreciate the historical heritage of the ancestral temple of the Pure Land Sect.
🕐️ Opening Hours: 09:00~17:00
🚗 Transportation Guide: Located in Hewankou Village, Puhua Town, Lantian County, Xi'an City. Navigate to Xiawuzhen Temple. It takes about an hour and a half to drive from Xi'an Xianyang. There are parking spaces by the roadside, 5 yuan per car, no time limit.
🎫 Tickets: Free admission, no reservation required.
⏳ Tour Time: About 30 minutes. If visiting the upper Wuzhen Temple, it takes about 3 hours, so plan your time accordingly!
💗 Other Tips: The schedule is a bit tight this time, but I will definitely visit the upper Wuzhen Temple if I have the chance.

▶️ 'Black Myth: Wukong' has certain connections with the wall sculptures of Shuilu Temple in Lantian, Shaanxi, and some buildings in Shanxi.
❣️ From the game's content, its architectural scenes and other elements draw references from many real-life ancient sites. These sculptures depict the life and death of Buddha to educate people's thoughts, help them escape suffering, and advocate the integration of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
