He Dong Library was built in 1894, and the original owner was Mrs. Guan Ye. The wealthy businessman Sir Ho Tung bought the building in 1918 as a summer villa. After Sir Ho Tung's death in 1955, the building was converted into a public library. By 1958, the library was officially opened to the public. The building is three stories high, the first floor is the reading room, and the second floor is the "Ho Dong Library". The building also has an open forecourt and back garden. The whole building has both the convenience of living in the city and the joy of being alone in the garden. A four-storey new building with modern and advanced facilities has been built on the back garden side of the library. The new building adopts a glass exterior wall that is conducive to daylighting, and integrates with the surrounding beautiful environment, allowing readers in the building to experience the strong atmosphere of Sino-Portuguese culture. The two buildings have a total area of more than 30,000 square feet and more than 400 seats. It also breaks the rules of banning eating and drinking and reducing noise in general libraries. The building divides places for eating and reading, and also sets up areas for readers to talk freely. After reading, they can also enjoy music and movies in the audio-visual area.
