St. Dunstan in the East was a public garden located in London, England. It is a historic site that used to be a church, but the church was mostly destroyed during World War II. In the 1970s, the ruins of the church were transformed into a peaceful and picturesque garden.
The garden's charm lies in the juxtaposition of the ruined church walls covered in ivy and the greenery of the surrounding trees and plants. It provides a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of London's busy streets. Visitors often find the serene atmosphere to be a perfect spot for relaxation, reading, photography, or simply enjoying a quiet moment.

St. Dunstan in the East Church Garden - Londo
St. Dunstan in the East Church Garden has become, perhaps, the most peaceful garden in London.
The history of this church has more than 9 centuries - it was built around 1100 and expanded in 1391. The great fire of 1666 almost destroyed the building, but people didn’t demolish it, they repaired it and added a Gothic style bell tower with a needle spire. In 1817 it was found that the roof of the church was too heavy for the existing walls and could collapse at any moment. Dunstan East was demolished and a new one was quickly built in its place, which opened in 1821. However, this time the building stood for much less than the possible time - it was very badly damaged during the air raids of 1941. And so much so that it was decided not to restore it.
In 1967 it was into a public garden - trees were planted among the old walls, paths were laid out, benches and even a small fountain were installed.

An urban oasis where nature meets history – discover London’s secret garden at St. Dunstan-in-the-Ea
#uktrip
Tucked away amidst the bustling streets of London, St. Dunstan-in-the-East offers a serene retreat from the city’s relentless pace. This church, originally built in the 12th century, suffered extensive damage during the Great Fire of London in 1666 and again during the Blitz of World War II. Rather than rebuild, the City of London Corporation decided to transform the ruins into a public garden in 1971.
Today, the overgrown ivy and lush greenery intertwine with the church’s Gothic architecture, creating a surreal and almost mystical atmosphere. The open-air setting, with its towering arches and verdant vines, provides a peaceful sanctuary for those looking to reflect, read, or simply relax. It’s a favorite spot for photographers, urban explorers, and anyone searching for a hidden piece of history within the modern cityscape. Whether you’re a local or a tourist, St. Dunstan-in-the-East offers a unique experience that transports you to another world.#uktrip #myhiddengems #historicallandmarks #localguides
