Little Venice in Hong Kong
#hiddengems
Tai O fishing village in Lantau Island is Hong Kong’s version of Venice, as the houses and shops are built on stilts in the water, and there is a boat ride that brings visitors along the water inlet lined on both sides. Some highlights include the market street with shops selling local delicacies such as dried seafood and snacks including the giant fish ball and donut. The boat ride was also something to do as you can really see the houses on stilts and they brought us further out into the sea to try our luck to find pink dolphins. At least half a day should be given to explore this peaceful gem away from the usual city life, and it is accessible by bus.

Visiting Tai O Fishing Village was like stepping into a picturesque postcard, immersing me in the authentic charm of Hong Kong's traditional way of life. The villagers, known for their resilience and fishing expertise, welcomed me with warm smiles, creating a sense of community and authenticity. Exploring the local market was a feast for the senses. The fragrant aroma of freshly caught seafood filled the air as vendors displayed an impressive array of dried fish, shrimp paste, and other culinary delights. The best part about exploring Tai O Fishing Village is that there is no entrance fee. Visitors are free to roam the village, mingle with the friendly locals, and soak in the authentic atmosphere without any financial constraints.

👉 One-day tour of Tai O
#Lunar New Year Tour at Tai O
We went on a one-day trip to the outlying islands, and finally, the fast ferry that had been closed due to the epidemic period is now back in service! What used to take us a 20-minute walk, now only takes two minutes to get to the Tai O Heritage Hotel. It's really fast!
We booked a restaurant 🍴 in advance, and as soon as we arrived, we could sit down and order a lot of food with shrimp paste. It was really delicious! After eating, of course, we had to stroll around with our family!
Every time we come to Tai O, we always try the local snacks. This time we had the chicken excrement tins, grilled squid 🦑, tofu pudding, and drank Roselle tea. It was very satisfying, and the closer we got to the pier, the more people there were. The prosperity of the old Tai O has returned!
If we visit Tai O next time, we can take a boat to the hotel from the pier first, and then walk out of the pier on the return trip, which will be much easier and faster!
In the new year, I wish everyone good luck in the Year of the Rabbit, abundant food and clothing, good health, successful endeavors, progress in children's studies, and growth in intelligence and wisdom, obedient and well-behaved 🙏🧧

Must Eat Food at Tai O Fishing Village
Tai O is known for its premium seafood and dried barbeque squid jerky, marinated giant cuttlefish, dried mantis shrimps and pork belly with Tai O’s signature shrimp paste, fresh oysters, and scallops. My favourite is mug wort leaf cake, a Chinese dessert that is chewy and mochi-alike. Please look for the uncle selling charcoal grilled eggette, it was crispy and so tasty. There are restaurants like Tai O Banyan Tree, Wah Li Snack, Station Tofu Pudding, Black Pearl, Tai O Lookout, and cafes serving delicious food. Other popular snacks are giant fish balls, Chinese sugar doughnut, Chinese crepes, “Husband’s meaty rolls, Cantonese shrimp roe noodles, charcoal grilled skewers of seafood, and many more.

VISIT LANTAU ISLAND: Tai O (Must-go places in Hong Kong)
Inhabited since as early as the Stone Age, Tai O is one of the most famous fishing communities in Hong Kong.
For those living in Hong Kong, this is a place that you would be ashamed of having never been to as it highlights the traditional culture of Hong Kong.
Tai O is home to Buddhist culture, incredible scenic spots and restaurants that you must visit to try out the fresh seafood cooked nearby.
The rich culture is displayed during the large-scale Dragon Boat competition which takes place each year.
Come to Tai O via bus from Mui Wo or Tung Chung, via Ferry from Tuen Mun/Tung Chung or even Water Taxi from Central (now 23% off on trip.com). Go on a nice walk to see the sights of Tai O before rewarding yourself with a delicious seafood meal. Fancy going on another walk? Go ahead! Why not go on a longer walk up the Pink Dolphin Trail or to Yi O? Then you can reward yourself with the sweet Tai O Donut from Tai O Bakery!
If you visit Hong Kong, sure you can’t miss Lantau Island, but more importantly, you can’t come over to Lantau Island and not go to Tai O.

Tai O - A fishing village in Hong Kong
Tai O is one of the few remaining fishing villages in Hong Kong. It located in Lantau Island, and the most authentic example of Southern China’s old fishing life and culture.
This is the best place for Hongkongers to having an escape from Hong Kong’s daily stress.
It can be reach by public bus from Tung Chung bus terminus for around 1,5 hours or 40 minutes by taxi.
Visiting this village, you can enjoy strolling through the small streets, catch up the sunset, tasting best seafood, or exploring boating the surroundings with affordable ticket. If lucky, you can see the dolphin when boating.

Venice in Hong Kong
Tai O is located on the western tip of Lantau island. It's a charming fishing village that has kept much of its original appeal. As such there are many waterways that run through the village, making a good snapshot of bygone Hong Kong. You can easily spend an afternoon roaming around its streets and exploring hidden corners.
As it is a fishing village, you'll find a plentitude of seafood dishes and products, which also make for great souvenirs.
A bit further away from the main village, you'll find a lovely promenade by the sea that leads to a pier. You'll have sweeping views of the South China Sea and on clear days even Macau.
Overall a great place for an authentic fishing village as well as tasty food. Do try to go on weekdays as it does get packed on weekends!

This was a big contrast from central Hong Kong with the stilt houses. When you get off the boat you'll see tour boat operators waiting to grab you. Its only $30HKD (around £3) for a 20 ish minute boat tour. Its probably the best way to get a feel for the village, especially on a hot day.

Tai O fishing village is one of trip destination in Hong Kong. It was also known as the Venice of Hong Kong. I had a trip to visit it once. There was stilt houses and some turned into just like a private heritage museum. On the way to the village by boat, I was lucky to see the pink dolphins. At the end of the trip, you could buy home industry product such as salted fish and dried orange.

The beautiful fishing village of Tai’O is a great place to kick back and relax, compared to the busy, fast pace of Hong Kong Island. Within a couple of hours of Hong Kong airport and Hong Kong Island, its a great spot for a weekend getaway, a relax and an unwind. lots of good food places, nice promenades to stroll along in the evening, and lush mountains to separate you from the rest of the world.

Keeping the promise of change in the sea. I know Tai O because of the Hong Kong TVB TV series "The Sky of Tai O". How much we loved watching Hong Kong dramas at that time!
Tai O, located on Tai O Island in the western part of Lantau Island, New Territories, Hong Kong. It was once considered part of the Wanshan Islands. Tai O is the earliest developed fishing village on the island. The Tai O fishing villages are all shacks built on the water. They are divided into two places by three seas. The shacks are connected by bridges and water boardwalks. There are criss-crossing people on the water. As the fishing village of Tai O still retains its past style, it is now the most famous fishing village landscape in Hong Kong.
Shack is the symbol of Tai O Fishing Village and one of Hong Kong's most unique landscapes. Tai O was once the main fishing port and garrison town in Hong Kong. It is also the focus of the fishing salt industry in the past 100 years. Since the ages, Tai O has been a gathering place for fishermen and their families. The fishermen believe that they lack a sense of security in living on plain land, so they built shacks on the shore. The densely shacks, criss-crossing waterways and bridges form the face of Tai O today.

Explosive! Are you ready to scream on the Hong Kong Panoramic Cable Car tour?
🌈Hey friends, I'm here to share an explosive trip to Hong Kong! This time it's not about the bustling cityscape, but a mesmerizing panoramic cable car experience that will captivate your heart! 🌟
🙆♂️Did you know? Having been to Hong Kong more than a dozen times, I was finally convinced by a friend to try a super niche route on Lantau Island, and it's simply beautiful enough to make you cry! Especially that 360-degree panoramic transparent cable car, I shouted 'So cool!' as soon as I got on.
🚄Transportation tip: Take the high-speed train directly to Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, or cross the border via Shenzhen Metro, then transfer to the Tung Chung Line of the MTR to Exit B at Tung Chung Station, and the S1 bus will take you to the cable car station. If you're taking a taxi, it's only a 5-minute ride from Hong Kong Airport!
🚠Cable car choice? 🤔Of course, the panoramic cabin! Although there's a queue (I went on the weekend and waited for about 40 minutes), sitting in the cabin, you feel like the whole world is beneath your feet, it's so stunning!
🎉Itinerary recommendation: Crystal Cable Car → Ngong Ping Market → Po Lin Monastery → Big Buddha → Heart Sutra Woods → Tai O → Panoramic Cable Car return trip! Don't forget to buy the Tai O Pass, it's super value and convenient!
📍Here come the attraction introductions!
✅Ngong Ping Market: Take photos with the graffiti wall and cable car cabins, with a high success rate! You can also have lunch here!
✅Po Lin Monastery: Feels like a mini Forbidden City, the Great Hall is super spectacular!
✅Big Buddha: Filming location for the movie 'Infernal Affairs', solemn and majestic, the play of light and shadow under the sun is so poetic!
✅Heart Sutra Woods: A large outdoor wood carving group, when viewed from above, forms an endless shape, so unique!
✅Tai O Fishing Village: A tranquil and leisurely fishing village, known as the 'Venice of Hong Kong', a popular weekend getaway for locals!
✅Tai O Lantau Peak: Easy to climb to the top, overlooking the beautiful sea sunset, it's like the 'Jeju Island of Hong Kong'!
🏨Accommodation recommendation: Tung Chung Sheraton Four Points, close to both the airport and the cable car station, with a delicious breakfast!
🙆♂️Quickly follow my travel diary, there are niche attractions and nanny-level travel tips every week! 🚀

Hong Kong · Tai O | A small fishing village that hasn't changed for 100 years
📍Detailed address: Tai O is quite remote, located by the sea at the foot of Lantau Island. It is usually arranged as a day trip: Lantau Island cable car + Lantau summit + Tai O.
🚉Transportation strategy: There is a bus station at the top of Lantau Island that goes to Tai O, with a bus every 20 minutes and a 25-minute ride. After reaching the Tai O bus terminal, you can see the stilt houses of the fishing village, which are within walking distance. For the return trip, take the bus from the same bus terminal you arrived at. There are two routes: one is back to the top of Lantau Island, a 25-minute ride. The other is directly to Tsuen Wan MTR station, a 50-minute to 1-hour ride.
🗓Itinerary: Fishing village → Pier → Iron bridge → Main street
⏳Play time: 2~3 hours (including meal time)
Pier: The first thing you see is the pier, where you can take a walk and enjoy the open seaside scenery, with speedboats shuttling on the water from time to time. Speedboat rides cost 150 yuan, and you can visit attractions such as the Guan Yu Temple on the outskirts of the fishing village.
Fishing village: The outskirts of the fishing village are quite clean, dilapidated but not dirty and messy, with exterior walls painted in colors, which is quite interesting. There is a street made up of small shops and stalls, selling fish balls, soup noodles, and drinks. The stalls sell drinks, dried fish, dried fruit, etc. The drinks are homemade, with hawthorn juice and dried tangerine peel juice at 15 yuan per bottle, and fish ball soup noodles range from 25 to 35 yuan.
Stilt houses: Following the stalls inward, you can see the sky-blue iron bridge at the end, with stilt houses on both sides of the bridge. It's hard to imagine this is also Hong Kong, looking impoverished, but this is the real scene of the fishing village's waterside life.
Iron bridge: The iron bridge is the dividing line, with the outskirts on one side and Tai O's central main street on the other. The bridge itself is also very distinctive, where you can stand and watch speedboats depart and return under the bridge. You can also see locals transporting goods on small carts.
👍Most recommended: Main street
After crossing the blue iron bridge, you enter the core area of Tai O. The view is completely different from before, no longer the style of stalls and small shops, but neat restaurants, pubs, and storefronts in a T-shaped cross street, very Hong Kong! The taste of the dishes is very authentic Hong Kong flavor. Drinking beer, eating seafood, vegetables, and rice... This is the most fitting lifestyle of a Hong Kong fishing village.
💰Average meal cost: Around 100 yuan.
❤Recommended reason:
Tai O is a relatively unpopular place on the Hong Kong travel route. It is a township-level fishing village, with everything from large restaurants to small stalls operated by locals. In the past, Stephen Chow had a very good movie 'The Dragon's Heir' set against this background, where the plot involves a developer eyeing Tai O, and Little Dragon saves Tai O's land by winning a snooker game against the developer's hired sharpshooter, Wade. Just as exciting as the story in the movie, this place is still not commercialized, lacking the hustle and bustle and fashion of the city center, yet it allows people to see another side of Hong Kong... With a trip to Tai O, a complete understanding journey of Hong Kong is perfect!
