Tan Zhe Secret Realm ~ The ancient temple that spans thousands of years
In early November, the autumn of Tanzhe Temple is getting stronger, and there are not many tourists on weekdays. The leaves of the two ancient ginkgo 'Emperor Trees' in the temple are still gradually turning from green to yellow. It seems that it will not be until the middle and late November that they will all turn yellow. We came a few days early. Although we came to enjoy the ginkgo, the incense mist of the ancient temple, the quiet and refreshing morning in the mountains and forests, still let us slow down and enjoy the tranquility and calmness that has been precipitated in this thousand-year-old temple. Light a stick of incense in front of the Daxiong Hall, admire a leaf under the thousand-year-old tree, and the mood is like a slow stream in the mountains, casual and comfortable.

Tanzhe Temple
Tanzhe Temple is located in Tanzhe Mountain, Mentougou District, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city. Constructed during the Jin Dynasty (256-316), Tanzhe Temple enjoys a history stretching back 1,700 years and is the earliest Buddhist Temple in Beijing. In former times its name was changed several times, but because there is the Dragon pool behind and wild mulberry (cudriana) trees on the mountain, local people always called it Pool and Mulberry Tree Temple or 'Tanzhe Temple' (Tan refers to the pool while Zhe refers to cudrania trees), and as time passed by this name was fixed upon.
Tanzhe Temple faces south and covers an area of 25,000 square meters (2.5 hectares). The existing buildings were mainly built in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911). The layout of it is arranged in an orderly fashion. Halls are mainly located along the central axis. Courtyards are situated in the east and various altars sit in the west.

Tanzhe Temple
Located in the Western Hills, Tanzhe Temple is the oldest temple near Beijing, dating back about 1,700 years. In centuries past, the Buddhist temple was a destination for pilgrims, including members of the imperial family. Several stately halls are devoted to Buddhist deities, with a touch of whimsy thrown in at the Pavilion of Floating Cups.
Poets floated cups filled with wine on a winding, narrow stream of water; when the cup stopped, the nearest poet had to drink the wine and recite a poem. When the skies are clear, Tanzhe is a good place to see stunning views of Beijing below.
If you want to learn more about China’s fascinating history and cultural heritage, then taking a guided tour to Tanzhe Temple is not a bad idea. With a professional guide at your side, you’ll explore the beautiful Buddhist temple and get to see its many pagodas before visiting Cuandixia Village – a charming place that is home to lots of traditional houses dating from 1403 to 1424.

In addition to burning incense and praying for blessings, there are more new ways to play 🤩
A strong wind blew down the ginkgo leaves 😭

Travel | Beijing Tanzhe Temple in Autumn
On this trip to Tanzhe Temple, I came to see the ginkgo trees.
In front of the Pilu Pavilion, the main tree was planted during the Zhenguan period of the Tang Dynasty, more than 1,300 years ago, and the accompanying tree was planted during the Liao Dynasty, more than 1,100 years ago. The trees are in full bloom, and the ground is covered with fallen flowers.
In the Abbot's Courtyard, there is a 1,300-year-old cypress tree from the Tang Dynasty, a 1,010-year-old pine tree from the Song Dynasty in the Longevity Hall, a 1,000-year-old sal tree from the Tang Dynasty in the Pagoda Forest, a 400-year-old magnolia tree from the Ming Dynasty in the Kalan Hall, and more than 100 trees from the Qing Dynasty.
These ancient trees have a strong aura, standing quietly amidst the noise. After all, in the thousands of years that have passed, the rise and fall of kings and the joys and sorrows of life have all become fleeting memories. As Xin Qiji said, "The moon has been caressed, and a thousand years have passed in the blink of an eye."
The cycle continues.

Tanzhe Temple was built before Beijing City.
🔺Tanzhe Temple was built in the first year of the Yongjia period of Emperor Huai of the Western Jin Dynasty (307 AD), more than 1,700 years ago. It is located at the foot of Tanzhe Mountain in the southeast of Mentougou District, Beijing. It is the oldest recorded temple in Beijing. You can visit and worship in half a day in Beijing.
💫In ancient times, many officials came here to pray for a successful career. Ordinary people can pray for career success, children can pray for academic progress or success in the imperial examination. Of course, you can also pray for health and peace.
🤗The Emperor Tree and the Empress Tree in Tanzhe Temple have reached the 70th viewing period.
🚗Self-driving: Navigate directly to the Tanzhe Temple parking lot, which has plenty of parking spaces.
🚎Public transportation: Line 6 Jin'anqiao Station - S1 Line Shichang Station - Bus 931 Tanzhe Temple Station
📷: The light is soft between 3 and 4 pm, and the photos are golden. If there is no wind, the leaves should last for another week. Hurry up! If you miss it, you will have to wait until next year.

Must-stay private hot spring homestay in Beijing!
Beijing Xitan Hotel
In Beijing's Western Hills, I found a quiet retreat - Beijing Xitan Hotel. Here, it is not only a place to stay, but also an experience of Oriental aesthetics.
🌿 The tranquility of Tanzhe Temple
"Tanzhe Temple", known as the "first ancient temple in Beijing", is a sacred place with a long history and lush ancient trees that inspire awe. Xitan Hotel is located under the protection of this ancient temple, continuing the cultural heritage of thousands of years.
🌳 Xitan's vision
The name "Xitan" comes from the Sanskrit "Siddanta", meaning "perfect achievement". The hotel is carefully designed by the master of Oriental courtyard design, Mr. Kanji Nomura and his team, perfectly integrating nature and modern life.
🏞️ Arrival in the rain
The mountains in the rain are more gentle, and the hotel's 38 guest rooms are hidden in ten courtyards named "Cui", each of which coexists harmoniously with nature.
🛋️ Experience of the Han Cui Courtyard
We stayed in the "Han Cui" courtyard, which is independent and private. The interior is simple and elegant, and the mountain view outside the window is like a vivid painting, making people feel relaxed and happy.
🛀 The comfort of a semi-open-air hot spring
The bathroom is connected to the terrace, and the semi-open-air hot spring design is loved. Here, you can listen to the rain, look at the wind and moon, and enjoy a moment of tranquility and comfort.

Coming to Tanzhe Temple for these few things is a must when visiting Beijing's royal temples
Here lies Beijing's largest and best-preserved ancient pagoda complex, with tomb pagodas of eminent monks from the Jin, Yuan, and Ming dynasties, exuding solemnity and tranquility.
Especially after the rain, when there's no one around, walking here can quickly calm even the most troubled mind.
Compared to the bustling incense offerings at Tanzhe Temple, this place is very quiet, with uniquely shaped ancient pagodas that are highly appreciated!
1️⃣ Touching the Stone Fish: You need to climb up the mountain, which isn't very high. A leisurely walk takes about 15 minutes. It's one of the four treasures of the temple. Everyone touches it from head to tail.
2️⃣ Ancient Trees: The temple has a thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, which turns yellow soon. Every year, many people come to see the ginkgo.
3️⃣ Praying and Returning Home: Everyone gets a stone 🐟. A friend bought a pink bracelet, which is very cute. There are also many adorable souvenirs to browse.
4️⃣ Vegetarian Meal: We happily arrived at an excellent vegetarian restaurant outside the temple, Jiafu Guesthouse. The environment is superb, and we dined in a small courtyard.
5️⃣ Exploring the Surrounding Tangu Valley: Known as Beijing's little Anaya, it has a Slow Flash Park, Berry Beans, One Way Street Bookstore, and an ice cream shop.

Summer self-driving tours at will, the secluded ancient Tanzhe Temple
"The reeds of Taoranting, the willow shadows of Diaoyutai, the insect singing of Xishan, the night moon of Yuquan, the bell sounds of Tanzhe Temple", is Mr. Yu Dafu's description of his former capital, Beijing.
When it comes to Tanzhe Temple, the first thing that comes to mind for Beijingers is probably "Tanzhe Temple existed before Beijing city", which not only indicates the early construction time of Tanzhe Temple but also implies the connection between Tanzhe Temple and the city of Beijing.
Tanzhe Temple was initially named "Jiafu Temple", and Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty bestowed the name "Xiuyun Temple", but because there is a dragon pool behind the temple and a zhe tree on the mountain, it has always been called "Tanzhe Temple" by the people.
The Mahavira Hall of Tanzhe Temple is a must-visit building, the most magnificent and splendid building in the entire Tanzhe Temple. It has the same architectural style as the Taihe Hall of the Forbidden City, "double-eave hip-and-gable roof, slopes on all sides, water flowing in eight directions, nine ridges", all of which are the highest grade buildings of the Qing Dynasty.
The Dragon Pool, which is the origin of the name of Tanzhe Temple, is located on the Jiuyun Peak behind the temple, where oak trees are lush, and exotic flowers and plants grow everywhere. On the mountain, there is a fenced pool with a dragon spring that flows continuously, clear to the bottom, and a sip of water is sweet and refreshing.
In the "Yigan Pavilion", a huge white marble base is carved with winding dragon-like water channels, resembling a dragon head or a tiger head. When the spring water flows over it, a wine cup with ears (called "yushang" in ancient times) is placed on the water, allowing it to float. The wine cup turns with the water flow, and the person where it stops takes it to drink. The "Emperor Tree", over 30 meters tall and over a thousand years old, is one of the iconic landscapes of Tanzhe Temple. Under the eaves of the corridor in front of the Dragon King Hall of Tanzhe Temple, hangs a large stone fish, 1.5 meters long and weighing 75 kilograms. The stone fish has a bronze color, and from a distance, it looks like a real fish. When struck with a stick, it can emit a clear and pleasant pentatonic sound.
Public transportation: Exit from Exit A of Apple Garden Station of the subway, transfer to bus 931, which runs every 30 minutes.
Self-driving route: Take the Lianshi Expressway westward, reach the Shimenying roundabout in Mentougou, follow the signs south, along the 108 National Road winding up the mountain, directly into the mountain road towards Jietai Temple and Tanzhe Temple, drive about 10 kilometers, and arrive at Tanzhe Temple.
Address: Tanzhe Temple Scenic Area, Tanzhesi Town, Mentougou District, Beijing.
Ticket price: Adult ticket: 50 yuan. Concessions, free for those over 65 with their own concession card, active military personnel, people with disabilities, and retired employees.

The Traveling Epicure
Ancient Temple of a Thousand Years‖Tan Zhe Temple existed before Beijing was built
A tree full of blossoms, a glance through a millennium.
Tan Zhe Temple is the oldest Buddhist holy site in the Beijing area, hence the widespread planting of the sacred Buddhist tree, the sal tree (also known as the seven-leaf tree).
There are more than 20 sal trees in Tan Zhe Temple, mainly distributed in the Dining Hall Courtyard, Lower Pagoda Courtyard, Abbot's Courtyard, Great Compassion Altar, and Vajra Hall, among others. The two sal trees behind the Mahavira Hall are about 20 meters high and about 1 meter in diameter, covering a large shade area. These two sal trees were planted during the Ming Dynasty and are now over 600 years old. The Liu Bei Pavilion & Precept Altar area has several seven-leaf trees from the Qing Dynasty. Some seven-leaf trees are very large and hidden, not very photogenic, so it is recommended to take portrait photos next to the two seven-leaf trees beside the Emperor Tree.
If you missed the Emperor Ginkgo tree in autumn, you must not miss the blooming of the sacred seven-leaf trees in early summer. The flowering period lasts two weeks, and now is the peak of their bloom. At this time, the temple also has the even more fragrant Taiping flowers in full bloom, which are very photogenic.
Adult tickets are 50 yuan, and the parking lot charges a one-time fee of 10 yuan. Besides the fame of Tan Zhe Temple, admiring the blooming of more than 20 seven-leaf trees at this time will definitely not disappoint you!

Tanzhe Temple existed before the city of Beijing
Tanzhe Temple is located at the foot of Tanzhe Mountain in the southeastern part of Mentougou District, Beijing. It is the oldest recorded temple in Beijing. The temple is commonly known as Tanzhe Temple because it is famous for the Dragon Pool and the wild mulberry trees.
Tanzhe Temple was originally built in the first year of Yongjia of Emperor Huai of the Western Jin Dynasty (307 AD), initially named Jiafu Temple. During the Wansui Tongtian period of Empress Wu Zetian of the Tang Dynasty (696-697 AD), the monk Huayan rebuilt the temple centered on the dilapidated Jiafu Temple and renamed it 'Longquan Temple'. Emperor Xizong of the Jin Dynasty, Wanyan Dan, visited Tanzhe Temple to offer incense and worship Buddha in the first year of Huangtong (1141 AD), and allocated funds for the renovation and expansion of Tanzhe Temple, renaming it 'Dawanshou Temple'. He was the first emperor to visit Tanzhe Temple to offer incense. By the Ming Dynasty, Tanzhe Temple underwent several renovations over its more than two hundred years of history. In the thirty-first year of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty (1692 AD), Emperor Kangxi allocated funds to renovate Tanzhe Temple. In the thirty-sixth year of Kangxi (1697 AD), Emperor Kangxi personally bestowed the temple name 'Chijian Xiuyun Zen Temple', and from then on, Tanzhe Temple became the largest royal temple in the Beijing area. Most of the existing buildings in the temple are relics from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Tanzhe Temple is located on the southern slope of Baozhu Peak, facing south with the back to the north. The temple covers an area of 0.025 square kilometers inside and 1.12 square kilometers outside, plus the surrounding forests and mountains managed by Tanzhe Temple, the total area exceeds 1.21 square kilometers. The temple buildings are built according to the mountain terrain, high in the north and low in the south. The entire temple is divided into several major parts: the central route, the east route, the west route, and the pagoda courtyard, forming the core architectural group of Tanzhe Temple. Tanzhe Temple is one of the birthplaces of early Buddhist culture in Beijing, and there is a folk saying in Beijing, 'Tanzhe Temple existed before the city of Beijing.' Its architectural scale is also among the largest of the temples in the capital.

The spring of Tanzhe Temple
The renowned Yulan magnolias named 'Er Qiao' are nearing the end of their bloom, while the Yulan plum and other magnolia flowers are in full splendor.
A warm reminder, if you do not plan to offer incense, it is advisable to avoid the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, as there are more pilgrims on these days, which may diminish the quality of your visit.
The bamboo in the picture is called 'Jin Xiang Yu', with green and golden yellow segments, which are very beautiful.
After entering through the main gate, take a left turn after crossing a small bridge for the accessible path, which is suitable for visitors with mobility issues or those pushing wheelchairs and strollers, leading directly to the square where the Emperor Tree is located.

Tanzhe Temple | A 1700-year-old ancient temple in Beijing
A 1700-year-old ancient temple in Beijing. Tanzhe Temple existed before the city of Beijing itself!
Located at the southeastern foot of Tanzhe Mountain in Mentougou District, Beijing, it is the oldest recorded temple in Beijing. The temple is famous for its Dragon Pool and Zhe trees, commonly known as Tanzhe Temple.
When you come to Beijing, you must visit Tanzhe Temple! It's slightly better to avoid traveling on holidays! The temple is very large, so make sure to set aside a full day!

Tanzhe Temple, did you worship correctly?
Getting rich overnight must be the ultimate dream of every working person. Since the concept of money was understood, many people go to large temples like Yonghe Temple and Tanzhe Temple on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month to worship Buddha and burn incense, and even register their names, phone numbers, and home addresses, hoping that one day the dream will come true and the pie of getting rich overnight will fall on their heads. However, years have passed, why are many people still toiling away, looking for membership to watch advanced screenings? Is it because there are too many people in the front row asking for wealth? Or did they forget to report their ID number? In fact, maybe you have been worshipping in the wrong place.
Tanzhe Temple, for career and education, did you worship correctly? The old Beijing saying goes, 'Tanzhe Temple was there before Beijing city,' which shows the profound history of Tanzhe Temple. Founded during the Western Jin Dynasty, it is the earliest temple built after Buddhism was introduced to the Beijing area. Nobles and royals from all dynasties were keen to come here to offer incense and pray for official fortune. After the Ming Dynasty, the temple became a favorite place for ministers, scholars, and even common people to enjoy the spring, and gradually formed the tradition of 'April at Tanzhe to see Buddha.'
The best visiting route for the temple is as follows: First, we get off at the parking lot at the entrance of the scenic area----then walk 600 meters to the ticket checkpoint of the scenic area---after passing through the checkpoint, we start to visit the central road buildings of the temple----First, visit the 'Hall of Heavenly Kings,' which is the entrance hall of the temple, enshrining the Maitreya Buddha with a big belly and the Four Heavenly Kings-----Then continue to visit the most magnificent hall of Tanzhe Temple, the 'Mahavira Hall,' which enshrines Sakyamuni Buddha. The entire hall is as grand as the Golden Luang Hall of the Forbidden City-----Next, continue to visit the Pilu Pavilion, the final building on the central line of Tanzhe Temple, and also the largest building in the temple. The pavilion is a two-story pavilion-style building-----After visiting the central road, we will visit the east road buildings in reverse order, visiting: Abbot's Yard-Yanqing Pavilion-Traveling Palace-Wanshou Palace-Empress Dowager's Palace---Then visit the west road buildings, visiting in order: Lengyan Altar-Precept Platform-Guanyin Hall.
Recommendations: 1. If you want to eliminate disasters and cure diseases, go to the Dragon King Temple at the highest point of the temple, where there is a very effective 'stone fish.' This 'fish' has a skill, it can cure diseases. It's not that the stone fish can diagnose and prescribe medicine, but wherever you feel uncomfortable, you knock on that part of the fish to eliminate diseases and disasters. Headache? Knock on the fish head. Stomachache? Knock on the fish belly. Back pain? Knock on the fish body. Someone asks, what if my arms and legs hurt? I tell you, knock on the fish fins! And if someone says, what if I have cancer? I advise you to go to the hospital. The stone fish can't handle that. Also, 'no slacking off at work by playing with the fish'!
2. Stamping. Friends who like to collect stamps also have benefits when visiting the temple. The cultural and creative store to the left of the ticket checkpoint, the Jiafu cultural and creative store after entering the main gate, and the Dragon King Temple, these stamps are well-inked, beautifully designed, and most of them are free, with a few requiring any purchase in the store. To be honest, the cultural and creative fridge magnets are particularly attractive and worth buying.

Autumn trip to the ancient temples in western Beijing
Autumn is the most beautiful season in Beijing, with colorful forests, mountain climbing, autumn viewing, camping, moon watching and star gazing can all be arranged. In Mentougou, western Beijing, there are two ancient temples, Tanzhe Temple and Jietan Temple, which have been the places for literati to enjoy autumn and pray for blessings since ancient times. Mr. Zhu Ziqing explored this path of seeking seclusion in the ancient temples nearly a hundred years ago and wrote the article 'Tanzhe Temple Jietan Temple'. On the Mid-Autumn Festival, I followed his footsteps to meet the new western Beijing and entered the autumn scenery of mountains and rivers.
√Tanzhe Temple
'Tanzhe Temple existed before Beijing', with a history of more than 1700 years, 'Jiafu Temple', 'Xiuyun Zen Temple' is the oldest temple in Beijing area.
The temple faces south with its back to Baozhu Peak, built along the mountain. During the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, it was a royal temple and was very prosperous. The architectural specifications are the same as those of the Forbidden City, with a grand momentum, double-eave roofs, and colorful paintings, all the beams are dragons, and all the plaques are written by the emperors of the Qing Dynasty.
There is a huge ginkgo tree with a thousand years of age, also known as the emperor tree. Every autumn, around November, the tree is golden and very spectacular, making it one of the most popular autumn viewing spots in Beijing.
The incense in the temple is very strong, and it is said that touching the stone fish in front of the Dragon King Hall is very effective for praying for blessings. The shadows of the trees, the red walls and black tiles, many corners are excellent places for taking pictures.
Opening hours: 8:30-16:30
Ticket price: 50 yuan, you can also buy tickets online in advance
Transportation: It is recommended to drive by yourself. There is a parking lot at the entrance of Tanzhe Temple. There are many restaurants nearby. If you dine, you can park for free.
Public transportation: Take the S1 line to Shichang and then take a taxi for about 30 to Tanzhe Temple
√Jietan Temple
Jietan Temple is not far from Tanzhe Temple. It is not as famous as Tanzhe Temple, but the environment is more quiet and beautiful. It was built in the fifth year of Tang Wude and has been 1400 years now. It is the temple with the most and most complete Liao Dynasty cultural relics preserved in northern China, such as Buddhist pagodas, sutra towers, and precept altars. The scene of Ganlu Temple in 'The Legend of Zhen Huan' was filmed in Jietan Temple.
Jietan Temple is known to the world for its 'precept altar, strange pines, and ancient caves'. The temple has the largest Buddhist precept altar in the country, with a clear Liao Dynasty style, mountain gate hall, bell and drum towers, Heavenly King Hall, Daxiong Hall, Thousand Buddha Pavilion, Guanyin Hall and Jiuxian Hall. Built along the mountain, rising layer by layer, winding paths leading to secluded spots, grand momentum, both the grandeur of northern temples and the beauty of southern gardens.
'The Buddha selection field', that is, the hall where Zhen Huan sweeps, you can see the three-story precept altar. The Peony Courtyard was once the place where Prince Gong of the Qing Dynasty lived in seclusion. There are old pines and cypresses, Taihu rocks, dense flowers and plants, and tourists can also enjoy tea and comprehend the Tao under the trees.
The ancient pines of Jietan Temple are a sight in the temple. The pagoda-hugging pine lies horizontally to the south, crosses the wall, and tightly hugs the ancient pagoda outside the wall. This ancient pagoda and the ancient pagoda next to it are the tomb pagoda and robe pagoda of Master Fajun, both of which are cultural relics of Liao Dynasty architecture and stone carving art.
Opening hours: 8:30-16:30
Ticket price: 45 yuan
Transportation: Self-driving cars can be navigated to the nearest parking lot on the mountain.
Lunch recommendation:
At noon, you can taste the eighteen ancient methods of Arhat vegetarian food in Jietan Temple, and the vegetarian set meal at the Jiafu Inn vegetarian restaurant at the entrance of Tanzhe Temple is also good in appearance and taste.
